Stampin’ Technique Week: Shimmer Paint Part 1 – Applying Shimmer Paint Direct to Stamp

Posted on: Monday, September 14th, 2009

I’ve had a number of you asking me for different ideas on how to use Stampin’ Up!’s new Shimmer Paints, so this past weekend I spent some time “playing” *lol*…..in fact I spent LOTS of time playing. I found so many fun ways to use the shimmer paints that I figured if I limited my sharing of my ideas with you to Technique Tuesdays only, then you’d be waiting for a LONG time. As of last night, I filmed 6 different videos, each showing you a different application of the shimmer paints.  So, for the next 6 days (minus Wednesday because that’s Soph’s punch art day) I’ll be sharing a video a day with you.   Who knows?  You may get even more if I come up with more project ideas. Now I will say up front that lots of people of have been experimenting and playing with shimmer paint so you’ll probably have seem some of these techniques elsewhere.

ShimmerPaintProject1

Today’s video shows you the most obvious use of shimmer paint – and that is how to apply it directly to your stamp and then use it for your projects. Now as you can see from my snapshot of today’s card, there’s also another bonus technique thrown in, and that is creating a mask and using it to sponge a shape on your card. The picture of today’s card is at a bit of an odd angle because I had a really hard time capturing the effect of the platinum shimmer paint.  It is so beautiful and vivid in real life (IRL) – much more vivid than simply using Silver pigment ink. I tried to angle my shot and get it as close to the image as possible so you could get as good a look as I could manage.  Of course if you want to see it IRL then you’ll just need to make one yourself *lol*!

Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Cut a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Whisper White CS and fold it in half using your bone folder.  Use a bit of Dotto adhesive on the back of the card to temporarily stick it to your grid paper so that it doesn’t shift as you’re working.
  2. Cut a 1/2 sheet of acetate (5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″), center it over Stampin’ Up!’s Top Note die and then run it through the Big Shot.  You want to use the reverse image (so not the actual Top Note, but the shape of the Top Note die cut into the acetate).
  3. Place a bit of Dotto adhesive around the outer edges of the acetate. Center the Top Note window over your Whisper White card front and then stick it to the grid paper.
  4. Sponge the inside of the Top Note using Not Quite Navy Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.  Make sure that as you are sponging you start on the acetate and work onto the CS (see video for clarification).  Keep sponging until you get your desired depth of color.
  5. Stamp the greeting onto the bottom portion of the sponged Top Note using Not Quite Navy ink and the Seasons Greetings stamp from the Many Merry Messages stamp set.  Use a Stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary.
  6. Shake up your bottle of Platinum Shimmer paint very well.  Open up the top.  Grab a sponge dauber and dab it into the top of the shimmer paint to pick up a little paint.  Dab your sponge dauber onto your stamp from the Lovely as a Tree stamp set.
  7. Once the image is completely covered in Platinum Shimmer Paint, stamp it onto the sponged Top Note shape.
  8. Remove the acetate sheet.
  9. Tie 16″ of silver cord around the card front in a bow.  You’re done!

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. I’ll post the supplies later this evening or tomorrow am as I’m out of time right now and have a team meeting tonight! Tomorrow I’ll have lots to share with you.  I have TWO class planners this month and a new Christmas Simply Scrappin’ Card Kit by Mail PLUS another video on another way to use Shimmer Paints.

27

Andrea,

I too love the shimmering paints. They are the best!!!!!!!! They are too beautiful for words.

28

Great tutorial. I can’t wait to get my shimmer paint. I hope the shimmer paints become a cataloge item! I store my sponge daubers in the treys the ferrero rocher candy comes in. So far I have one of the larger treys that holds 24 daubers so I’m going to try to get a few more so I can have a dauber for each color.

29

Lovely video Andrea, can’t wait to make a card, thanks for showing us about the shimmer paint and I am looking forward to the rest of your videos, thanks always for sharing

37

beautiful card – love your videos

38

Lovely card! It’s so elegant & clean, the kind I like the most (especially) for holiday card!
Hooray for more shimmer pant vedio, I would love to learn more ways to use that pretty stuff.
Oh, and a great tip to start sponge off paper first, I need to do that to avoid a BIG CHUNK of sponge on the card fron (ugly).
Thank you!

39

Awesome video that is just chocked full of hints and tips. Love it. Will be looking forward to the next ones. Does it take a long time for that paint to dry? Thank you so much.

41

Thanks for the tutorial. I have been waiting to see what the shimmer paint irl before i decided to buy it. I think that I might be ready to buy some. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to your other videos.

42

This is a gorgeous one layer card–thanks for showing us!

43

Wow. When I used this same technique, I had to “pounce-off” a couple of times before I could go to the stamp or else I would get too much ink on the stamp and it would try to slide. It worked perfectly for you! I just LOVE the way it looks with NQN. That is one of the colors I used too. I also use the Platinum with Rich Razzleberry too. VERY rich and beautiful. Check it out here…http://creativepzazz.blogspot.com/2009/09/my-first-swap.html
Thanks for the inspiration.

44

Love your technique! Thanks for sharing it with all of us : )

I had the same problem tying bows until I found this great video from Kristina Werner! It made a huge difference in my ability to tie a “pretty” bow, and all of my club ladies now use her easy techniques. You should check it out!

She also has one for tying knot with the wide grosgrain ribbon. It is also pretty helpful : )

Really liking the looks of this shimmer paint – hopefully coming our way soon-ish! I would like to add that you have made the Lovely as a Tree stamp really jump – I’ve been amazed at how verstile this set really is. I’m using it a lot as a christmas set at the moment and I really love what you did with it here.

48

Andrea, thank you so much for the video tutorial, step by step instructions and tips on how to use the shimnmer paints with reinkers! I am sure that the effect of the paint is even more awesome IRL!! Can’t wait to try it out!

Simple but elegant. This is so pretty! I have never used the negative of the top note die. Love it. I think I will sponge the swirly one time as water… I think you have used it at water one other time.

55

Thank you for sharing your ideas. Now that we know how to use shimmer paint, we all should have a lot of fun experimenting. Thanks again.

56

I cannot get over how stunning this card is and that it is really simple to do. It may sound silly, but this is the only card I think about when I think of getting into my craft room to make a card. I know what everyone is going to get for Christmas this year. Thanks sooo much for showing us how to do the template idea…I can’t wait to try it!

57

Love your cards and your ideas. I bought the shimmer paints but did not know what to do with some of them. Thanks so much for the wonderful tutorial.
