Holiday Blitz Day 3: Big Shot Snowflake Ornament Tutorial & another winner!
Posted on: Thursday, November 20th, 2008
Welcome to our Holiday Blitz Day 3 – your source for great holiday project ideas. For the rest of the month of November my sister Sophia and I will be featuring a new holiday project idea each and every day. You’ll see all sorts of great ideas for cards, gifts and holiday packaging – and many of our project ideas will also be accompanied by tutorials. As if that wasn’t enough, we’ll also have a blog give-away each and every day – which means that as many days as there are left in November, you have chances to win! So read on…..

Today’s project is an ultra-easy but super cute ornament created using the Big Shot and the Sizzix large snowflake BigXLdie. To create this ornament you will need the following supplies:
Four 4" x 5" pieces of Designer Paper
Two 4" x 5" pieces of lightweight chipboard (I used the "cardboard" pieces that come in each package of Designer Paper)
Ink & Accessories: Tombow Multi-Purpose adhesive, foam brush, Crystal Effects, VersaMark pad, Iridescent Ice embossing powder, heat tool, silver cord, crystal beads (I used one from my Pretties Kit).
Step 1: To create this ornament you will need four 4" x 5" pieces of DP and two 4" x 5" pieces of lightweight chipboard. I used the Ski Slope designer paper which has a different design on each side. The patterns you see below come from one sheet – it has the red pattern on one side and the blue/white/red pattern on the other. Take out your Tombow and a foam brush.

Step 2: Squeeze dabs of Tombow adhesive all over one of the chipboard pieces.

Step 3: Spread the Tombow ALL OVER the surface of the chipboard so that you have a thin, even, layer.

Step 4: Cover with a piece of DP. Repeat on the other side – be sure to use a different pattern and/or color of DP. Cover the second piece of chipboard in the same way.

Step 5: Cut the snowflakes out using your Big Shot and the large snowflake Sizzix die.

Step 6: If you’d like to add a little glitz to your ornament, now’s the time. I took a VersaMark pad and pat it all over the surface of the snowflake and then sprinkled on Iridescent Ice embossing powder.

Step 7: Heat emboss with your heat tool. Repeat on the other side of the snowflake.

Step 8: Your next step is to fold up the sides of the snowflake as shown in the picture below. You want the "center" to remain flat because you will glue the two centers together.

Step 9: Glue the center portion of the snowflakes together using Crystal Effects. Let dry.

Step 10: Take about an 8" piece of silver elastic cord and wrap around the very center of the snowflakes – like spokes on a wheel – tie the ends together at the back and trim.

Step 11: Take a piece of 12" silver elastic cord and thread it through the very top of the snowflake as shown in the picture below.

Step 12: Thread both ends of the cord through a round crystal bead , tie a knot just above the bead and then tie a second knot near the top of the cord. You’re done!

And now, onto the winner of yesterday’s draw. First though, I want you to know I really enjoyed reading all of your cookie-related traditions. We don’t have any specific cookie "traditions" although we do have some favourites. Because my husband and kids love chocolate and ice cream, one of my all-time favourites (although I haven’t made them in quite a few years) is a chocolate ice-cream sandwich cookie. The cookie recipe comes from an old Martha Stewart Holiday magazine (I think I bought it about 7 years ago). You make a chocolate soft cookie, cut in out in any shape you desire, spread your favourite ice cream between it (we use mint ice-cream) and then freeze. The texture is about the same as for an ice cream sandwich and they never last too long.
And now……drumroll please……the winner of yesterday’s draw for the pdf tutorial of the Christmas Planner tin is Jan Farring! Congratulations Jan! In order to draw my winners I use the website www.random.org so that the winner is randomly drawn. Jan, please email me at andrea@sunnystampin.com in order to claim your prize!
For Holiday Blitz Day 3 I’ll be drawing another winner for the tutorial for this tin. In fact, I’ll be giving away this particular tutorial for 7 days in all. After that, it will be a different tutorial for a different project. This tutorial includes a supply list, dimensions and over 40 step-by-step color photos on how to make this project. For more details about the Holiday Blitz Event click here.
A lot of you have been emailing me and asking me if you could purchase the tutorial for this planner tin since I am unable to give it away free (because it was a special Make and Take for a paid event) The answer is yes! You can purchase the tutorial by clicking HERE.
Today’s question: How do you handle gift giving during the holiday season - do you buy gifts for everyone in your family/extended family, do you draw names, buy only for the kids, give a donation in place of a gift….etc?
Just so we’re all on the same page – the winner of today’s draw will be announced tomorrow evening (EST) when I post Holiday Blitz Day 3. You can expect our daily posts to be released in the EVENING (EST).

Wow – how amazing! You have great ideas and thanks for sharing them.
Our extended family draws names for the kids to exchange. Until this year we did a ‘gag gift’ and game. Gift for $10. This year we are going to all throw in $10 that we would have spent on a gag gift and donate it to charity. We will take turns picking the charity – one family will get to choose this year, another family next year and so on! Sounds like lots of fun!

Great idea!! One more thing to add to the DS paper and Big Shot list of why everyone should have one!!
My belief in gift giving for both my husband’s and my familes is that everyone get’s something that let’s them know I am thinking of them. We are all pretty far apart. I like to make a homemade gift of some kind, as well as a card. The kids usually also get another small gift concerning one of their hobbies or needs.
I will say my two sister-in-laws do not agree with me. Their belief is that we should only give gifts if we are together. We have agreed to disagree. So I lovingly send gifts I hope they will love. I also beleive in the phone calls, cards and emails during the year, not just communication when we are together every couple of years.
Thank you once again for sharing, and may you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.

that is really neat! you have such great ideas.
i try to get all the kids gifts especially my nieces. the adults get home made gifts from me as well as my friends.

Wow!! What a beautiful Snowflake Andrea!!!
We have pared down our Christmas Shopping a lot over the years and keep our gift giving to immediate family adults and just buy gifts for the Children in our extended families……makes it So much easier and always fun to see the babes open their gifts.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
What a cute idea! We draw names for the adults and buy for the kids. Christmas is a huge deal in my family, so we go all out. They always appreciate my handmade gifts.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Thanks for sharing another great idea! We still buy gifts for all of our immediate family. With the extended family, we draw names for the kids, which I think works well. The kids can choose for other kids, and we all go away happy!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
will try this tomorrow. i’ve made these but have not put 2 together. Great idea and tutorial. Thanks. I have a big family so we draw names for the kids and do an exchange. For the adults we play dirty Santa. The object is to set a money limit and purchase a gift. We wrap them and put in the center of the room. We then each pick a number based on how many are playing. The person who has number one picks first and so on. You want to have the last number cuz as each person after one picks they can choose to pick a wrapped gift or take a gift from someone that has already picked. The twist on the game is that your gift can be a fun useful gift or a gag gift. We always have a lot of laughter with some of the gifts each year. One year I made slippers out of feminine hygiene pads and embellished with paper flowers and brads. They were so cute and the funniest part is that the person who ended up with them could also wear them!!!! I also had a useful gift with the gag gift!!! BTW I got the idea for the slippers on splitcoaststampers.

In my family my husband and I presents for our kids and for each other. We also give gifts to our parents and siblings. That about covers it and of course we have some friends here and there that we may give something to or we give them a homemade treat to eat.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
We are only buying gifts for our children this year. All of our extended family are getting homemade gifts from us, and they are all doing the same for us. Can’t wait to see what everyone is doing.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
I knew there was a reason that I saved allthat chipboard! Finally, a great project to use it on! TFS!!
We currently buy for everyone on my mom’s side of the family as well as my DH’s mom. I usually spend a little more on the kids cause ya know, everyone has to have the same amount of packages to open! LOL! We enjoy the giving part of Christmas but we will always cherish the reason for the season by celebrating Christ’s birth!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Beautiful! Love your creative ideas. We generally give only to close family members and friends but try to arrange get togethers with others.

I buy for many teachers because my daughter is special needs so she has a para, OT, Speech, PT, etc. (about 12). In my extended family we draw name for the adults and buy all the kids. In my husbands extended family we do the same. We also buy for friends, churchworkers, etc. It is a bit overwhelming.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I come from a huge family. Every year we get together sometime during Christmas week and have a good ol’ Yankee Swap. To participate, you must bring a gift. And you never know what is hidden in the wrapping. I have some very creative people in my family and they can hide things in places I would never have thought of! We each bring food for a potluck dinner as well. Great times – seeing all the siblings, their spouses, nieces and nephews. Thank you for the reminder that I have to get my thinking cap on for this year’s!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
What a gorgeous ornament and looks so easy!
We exchange gifts with the immediate family and deliver meals for the Waterfront Mission as our gift of service to others esp. the elderly.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
We do things differently for our families, on my husbands side we purchase gifts for his sisters and for his niece and nephew as well as his parents. Because his family is so big beyond that, we draw names only for the kids. For my family, we just purchase for nieces and for my parents. Once again a great idea!! Thanks for sharing.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Hi Andrea,
Right now we buy mostly for kids on my side and a little something for the parents. I usually make my Sis & sis in law note cards and/or greeting cards. Various ones to use throughout the year. On my hubby’s side, he’s an only child so there are no holds barred for his mum. Though mostly for the kiddos now a days! hehe
Thanks for asking AND sharing!

I love the snowflakes. I have to try this right away.
We have a small close family. This year everyone will buy for the 4 childern and then the adults will be making gift for the adult exchange. I am excited to see who had my name. I am also looking forward to seeing the excitment on my sister face when she opens mine. Happy holidays!!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Since my husband’s side is rather large we only buy for the kids. For us adults we a grab bag. My sisters (that it for me when it comes to family) and i we stop buying each other gifts. What do now is we take a day and go to a spa or go on small getaway. This we added a $10.00 limit gift just to see what we can come up with. That should be fun.

For my husband’s side, we but for his parents, younger sister and neice (don’t ask why not his older sister and brother-in-law–too complicated to explain).
For my side of the family, the adults draw a name (can’t be our spouse) and we all buy for all the kids.
I can’t decide which I like better. I love to but for my parents, but I don’t always get one of them. Yet, I still give them something I’ve made–that way I feel that I’ve given them something without breaking our gift-giving deal.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
We give to the immediate family. Mom and brothers and sisters. We all make a lot of handmade items for the others. Scarfs, embroidery, purses, cookies, candy, cards, tree ornaments. I work with the youth at church to make cards and bookmarks for the shut ins and nursing homes. I love Christmas!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
For immediate family we do individual gifts (with wish lists distributed in advance for ease!! lol). For extended family (cousins, we have loooots of them) – one side of the family draws names, the other side draws names for the young generation, the middle generation does a greedy Santa (where you bring a gift and then pick one/steal one) and the older dignified (lol) generation does a generic female gift/male gift selection.
Thanks for the ideas & for the opportunity

Hi
Quite a few years ago (about 10) my mother and I started baking instead of gift giving.
We bake about 15 – 20 different batches (most double and some triple!)of everything from chocolate covered popcorn to cookies and bars, plus all sorts of holiday candy balls, and party mixes. Each year we try to find a few new and exciting recipes to add to old favorites like oreo balls, cherry surprise balls, and sweet chex mix. When all is said and done we usually give about 30 different gift baskets and boxes to friends and family. I really look forward to this “event”, which we do in 1 weekend, every year.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Andrea – What a great project with the snowflake die (which will be arriving here in sunny Florida on Monday!)!
We give gifts to immediate family. Usually individual gifts for the kids and “couple” or “family” gifts for the adults. We also give gifts to some of our closest friends. Then, of course, everyone gets cookies! Christmas is just so much fun! I really love choosing and/or making the “perfect” gift for people I care about.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
What a cute decoration! We used to pull names for the adults and buy for all the kids. This year, because everyone is feeling the crunch of the economy, and the list of kids is growing, we are not buying for adults, and each child drew the name of another child.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Hi,
For Christmas gifts, on my side of the family we all buy for the 4 kids between my brother and I. The adults draw names and have a $100 limit. Then, in the evening we have a $5 gift exchange, where we all draw a number, all the gifts go into the middle of everyone, person #1 takes a gift (wrapped), number #2 can either take a new gift or take #1′s gift. It keeps going down the line like that. We have made rules over the years, like a gift cannot be “taken” more than twice. It’s fun,and it can be very entertaining.

What a neat idea for a “free hanging” snowflake. I’m gonna try it tomorrow. Thanks very much. Thinking about purchasing the organizer tin tutorial so I can do some of those for gifts!
Regarding gift giving. Most everyone any more gets handmade (read papercrafted) gifts, especially this year. However, I do get special gift(s) for my significant other. For years, our small family drew names for the adults and everyone bought presents for the children.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Hi Andrea,
On my side of the family we buy for everyone. Fortunately that means only 10 people as we have a very small family. On my husband’s side we draw names as there are lots more of them. So we buy for his parents and two others. Of course, we buy for all 4 of our children and 2 grandchildren as well. Now that I have written it down, it seems like a lot. hmmm…..
Thanks for posting the purchase info for this tutorial. Hopefully, I will win
November 20th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Love all you holiday ideas. The snowflake ornament is so cute!
In my family we have a grab bag gift exchange. Everyone buys one gift between a certain dollar amount and wraps it up. We are scattered all over he USA and come together once a year in early November for a Thanksgiving and Christmas reunion. We all just returned from Florida where my parents and sister’s family live. It’s so nice seeing everyone and enjoying each other before the big rush of the holidays. Of course, being a mom I still bake up stuff and send it off to my children. This year is will be home baked cookies with a special plate to serve them on. I just love giving!
November 20th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Another great tutorial. These are so pretty. For our Christmas gift giving, we usually buy for everyone but I think that will change in the new year as both my nieces are expecting again (one has 3 now & the other 2) so next year there will be 7 little ones all under 7 plus all the adults. It gets pretty costly when the family is so large.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
I usually try to buy for the kids, then I try to make something for the adults, name frames, desk sets, just something personal to them from me.
thanks for sharing, this snowflake ornament is awesome.

Ok, I’d just like to say I’m having lots of fun reading and answering all of the Christmas questions – so many different traditions! As for gifts, we usually only do close family, but this year we aren’t even giving among the siblings. Guess we can thank the economy for that one!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
I love Christmas, the hustle and bustle of shopping and trying to find just the right gifte for everyone on my list. Last year my family decided to draw names and we all hated it so this year we’re going back to shopping for everyone but keeping the gifts within reason and more personal. Guess who’ll be making theirs?!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
I am hand making all of our gifts this year. I know some will be disappointed in this but we just can’t afford to do otherwise. I’m putting my over-abundant scrap stash to some good use! lol
November 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Love this snowflake ornament!
We buy for both of the immediate families..which includes parents, siblings and our nephews and neice! It’s just the two of us so we don’t find it too bad..the kids are still young so it’s easy enough to find them something these days. I’ve been making gifts lately and hope to do the same this year as well…we’ll see.
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
We keep Christmas gift giving pretty small, all things considered. We buy &/or make a little something for everybody. I started the handmade presents over the summer so I’ll be able to make more than normal this year; I love that!
My favorite gift giving tradition, though, was suggested by my uncle nearly a decade ago. I had made a peach pie for some family dinner and he told me that from there on out, he would love nothing more than if I could make him a peach pie for Christmas every year. And so I do
.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
My husband is one of five and in his family they all buy for everyone. When we first got married it was a lot of fun trying to find that special gift for each person on the list. As we added children (8 grandkids in all) it became a little more challenging trying to get all of the shopping done. The past few years we have still given each child something as well as his parents but the rest of us have started making donations to a local charity in each person’s name. Last year my husband and I decided to donate to SOME (So Others May Eat) and take the family out to dinner so that we could enjoy a meal together. We are all so busy that sometimes we only see one another on special occasions and we live close to one another. So this Saturday we are FINALLY taking everyone out while my niece watches our kids. Just in time for this year’s Christmas!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
That snowflake is gorgeous. I am sad I don’t have that die.
Gift giving the last few years has really been focused on our nieces/nephew and our daughter. Besides the “kids” we buy for parents, but that is about all.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
At Christmas we put a lot emphasis on family being together but we do buy a gift for everyone. A lot of thought goes into the gift giving as we want it to be personal and special. Our family get together is small so we can afford to do this. I can see how it would get costly if there were a lot to buy for. Every year we participate in the Operation Christmas Child program which gives a box to a less fortunate child in third world countries.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Bummer, just placed my order for the Big Shot and I tettered with the idea of the snowflake and of course I decided against it otherwise I wouldn’t be so bummed
The adults usually pick names and then we focus on all the kids. And then we usually will give money through Samaritans purse or other organizations through our church to buy a family a farm animal or blankets or something that is a REAL need!
This year I will also be hand crafting some fun gifts too
November 20th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Such a pretty snowflake!! We buy for immediate family and for parents, and kids of siblings. Thanks for the chance to win!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Hmmm…well with my immediate family we buy gifts for everyone (5 of us in total) plus my sister gets an extra gift from all of us because her birthday is on Christmas Eve! As for the extended family which is who we get together with to celebrate Christmas, we draw names on Thanksgiving and do a Secret Santa with a $50 limit, and if we want to we buy gifts for all the children. Thanks again for posting these wonderful projects and give-aways!

Boy….this could be a real long comment! I am 1 of 7. There are 18 grandkids and spouses. We stopped the gift swapping a few years ago. Financial woes in familes, too many kids in one family, verses 1 like mine. I never minded picking names since I only had to buy one. But it is harder on those with larger families. We only buy for the baby’s 1st Christmas and our God-Children. Have always bought for my parents, but this year we are all cutting back. It is just too much. We all get together for Christmas Eve, laugh, eat, and the kids get gifts from my parents. I ususally come up with a Christmas game or two and have prizes. We just love getting together and have fun! With 2 sisters, and 4 brothers as my closest friends, we don’t need gifts…….we are gifts to each other.
Now I want to cry!
And as a note to you girl…..how in the heck are you doing all of this! I want to be you when I grow up! (or should I say grow young!)
November 20th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
We buy for the immediate family on my side and do a polyanna amongst the adults (my aunts, uncles, and cousins that are 18yrs or older) those under 18 get gifts from the aunts and uncles. On my husbands side of the family which is very large we buy for my MIL and God children. He has 8 siblings all married and 18 nieces and nephews and 7 great nieces and nephews just too many to buy for and they all live across the US.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
These tutorials are awesome! I am really enjoying looking at them!
My family is small so it’s easy for us to give gifts to all. We keep it simple. Some things are handmade (this year lots will be handmade).
November 20th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Both sides of my family, we draw names for the adults (over 18). Any child under 18 still receives presents. Still buy for the parents (which is crazy – what do you get for people who have everything???) but cutting back, big time, for the spouse. We try to give something small for all the aunties and uncles from my daughter so, I will be busy! And for that reason, I am keenly reading your tutorials because some of these items will end up under various Christmas trees across Canada and the U.S.
Take care and so excited to be checking in every day! Fantastic blog!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:03 am
May have to buy the snowflake die after all. Thanks for sharing your talent.
We use to buy gifts for everyone. However, this year, the adults are drawing names with a set gift value and everyone will buy for the kids.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:03 am
Hi! Great tutorial!
We buy for our extended family – although for adults I’ve gone the route of buying gift cards. Much easier for me, and nicer for the recipient to pick out what they want. There’s only my 2 kids and my 2 nieces, so the kids’ shopping is pretty easy. I used to be so much more organized, though!!
Thanks for another chance at a great prize!

My family is 1st generation in Canada so we don’t have any extended family here. We will usually buy gifts for everyone (my parents and my brother, his wife, and kids). On my boyfriend’s side, we buy for all the kids and draw names for the adults of his immediate family (parents and siblings), although I always get something for his mom.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:04 am
In my family, we buy two $10 gifts and place a dice game. I have three nieces that I buy gifts for too.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:15 am
Just on my husband’s side of the family he has 9 sisters and 3 brothers all with children. For a while before all the babies came we tried to buy something for all of them but found that our finances couldn’t handle it. We only bought for our parents after that. Now since they are gone, we buy for each other which includes me, my husband, my daughter, my one grandchild and my son in law. We open gifts on Christmas Eve for us and on Christmas day for the baby. I also exchange gifts with three special friends.
Your star is very pretty. Thanks for sharing.

We buy for everyone in our family since we have such a small family. THanks for the great ornament. Mary
November 21st, 2008 at 12:18 am
I kind of do a little of everything. I buy for kids that we are close too. On my dad’s side we donate money to the cancer society in name of my Great Grandmother. And we also buy for moms and dads and we buy for are children. Of course I make a lot of the gifts that we hand out. This year I am making jewlry as gifts. I hoping they are a well liked.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:18 am
we do presents for immediate family only.
typically we go all out but with these times we are scaling back a tad. we know some of our family members cant go all out like they used too and even though we love sharing the wealth, it’s been brought up how bad they feel if we go all out. so instead of an extra lavish gift, something smaller and picking up the tab at the restaurant.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:19 am
My family is a little smaller than my husband’s so we usually buy for each other. But we draw names for my husband’s family, when it comes to adults. With the kids we buy for each of them.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:19 am
We exchange gifts with immediate family. We each have two kids (from previous marriages) and now have two grandchildren, so they are included, of course. I have a teenage niece and nephew that I have fun gifting.
I love those snowflakes!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:19 am
wow! you never stop amazing me! i would love to be entered into your give away!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:21 am
I don’t celebrate holidays due to my religion. As a result, we celebrate our anniversary and get gifts for the kids as well.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:24 am
Our family used to buy for everyone. We then tried drawing names to keep costs down. This year, we decided that each of us would toss $1 into the pot and purchase scratch lottery tickets. We will then put the tickets into a basket and everyuone will get to draw a ticket out and see who the lucky winner(s) are. We are also doing a pot luck meal, taking a family portrait with bros. digital camers/tripod and running out to get a photo developed for each of us. We are all also bringing games to play together so we have things to do together throughout the day.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:28 am
We always exchange gifts in the immediate family. For others it depends. Last year, we had a woman in our office with a sick child and the four people in my group who usually give gifts to each other gave that money to the family instead. I did the same thing for my church staff who I usually do gifts for as well. This year, I’m thinking about doing that again if I can find the right charity.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:28 am
I luv to make, find, shop for the perfect gift for my family and friends. I want them to know how special they are to me and that I take pleasure in finding something unique to match their personality.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:30 am
Love this snowflake! We draw names for the adults in our immediate family. We buy small gifts for each child since we don’t have a very big family with a lot of children. Each family does something for our Grandparents. We do something for my Mother-n-law & brother-n-law. I love to make my gifts for the people that I give to.

Love the Snowflake.
For me family is all in TX and I am in VA, so we don’t exchange unless we go home for Christmas, which is rare anymore. Kids are grown, so they don’t have little friends they exchange with. Neighbors I usually give cookie/candy gift of some kind. I have some very close girlfriends here now and we usually go out for a Christmas and my birthday dinner combo and exchange gifts, but this year we decided that instead of exchanging with each other we would get the name of a needy child and buy some of the items on the child’s list together.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:32 am
I get all my neices and nephews gifts and then my siblings and in-laws now that we are all married which makes 10 of us pick names. I buy for my parents (& in laws) some of my aunts and uncles (and inlaws) (which I now make instead of buy)and Grandparents that we are fortunate to still have with us. This year I plan on making as many gift as possible.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:37 am
Such an adorable ornament!
As for gifts, we buy for our immediate family and other people if we want to! Very relaxed.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:39 am
Now I’m wishing I hadn’t deleted the snowflake from my “huge” list. We mostly just buy gifts for the kids and then send cards. Our family is all spread out. My kids still get PJ’s on Christmas Eve ~ a tradition they love.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:40 am
Great snowflake!
We do 2 different things. One family we do a $20 general gift(themed, 1 yr we did kitchen/baking items) and then play something similar to the Yankee Swap. We also buy for all the kids.
The other family we wrap something from our home that we want to get rid of(has to be in good shape) and buy a $5 gift card (usually a gas card) and play something like the Yankee Swap. Also buying for all kids.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:41 am
We do all kids in our immediate family and draw for names in the extended family for kids. For my side extended, we do what my Aunt calls “Dirty Santa” where the adults take a gift for your gender in a price range ($20 or $25, decided ahead of time). We all draw numbers then start opening at number 1. Person #2 can take what has been opened or pick a new present to open. Person #3 can take anything that’s been opened or open a new one. Any gift can only be stolen twice before it stays with that person. It’s fun! Sometimes we also bring a $5 gag gift to go with.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:41 am
Thanks for the great projects – I knew I should have bought that snowflake die…
We give gifts to our immediate family that we will spend time with for the holidays. Last year since my sister-in-law and her family did not come down we did not buy individual gifts for everyone. Instead when we were all together at Thanksgiving we (the parents and grandma) pitched in to rent a limo for our kids (6 of them – ages 10 to 18) to take them to lunch, bowling and a couple of other places. This was their combined Christmas gift rather than getting them all individual gifts and having to mail to those we don’t see. In past years when getting together with my husbands father’s family (he got remarried and had other kids – so these are all the step brothers and sisters) we drew names for several years and then more recently brought a gift and drew numbers and then each person had the option to take from an earlier gift or choose a new one – I think most people call it a Yankee gift exchange. We live in the south so I don’t know for sure.

Thank you for all of the inspiration. Your site is so fun to look at and get ideas from.
In my family, we don’t buy for siblings. Instead, we buy for the nieces and nephews. I small token to our parents and grandparents. We always say nothing for each other (our spouse), but we always fudge on that one and do it anyway. The kids get spoiled the most!!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:52 am
We drew names about 5 years ago on my husbands side and we have bought gifts for the same person ever since, but for his neice and newphew we spoil with fun gifts.
On my side of the family I by my brother and his wife a small gift and we spoil their 2 kids. We get something for both sets of our parents.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:52 am
Andrea, you are an inspiration to us all. Thank you for all of your hard work.
Because our family has grown in numbers over the years, we draw names for the gifts. However, I always buy something for my only niece and nephew. And despite my mom saying EVERY year that she doesn’t want anything, I always get something for her. Last year I gave her a 12X12 SU Calendar. She loved it and now that the year is almost over, the pages are going into an album. Not sure how I can top that this year…
November 21st, 2008 at 12:58 am
I only have 1 of 5 left at home. The older children are struggling to start life on their own financially. So we draw names now. I don’t like it but they do. I will still buy for them all, and santa will come to those who stay at home for Christmas.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:10 am
Oh, my these are beautiful makes me want to go back down to my craftroom and make one now but with a class tomorrow night and a card assembly party tonight I think I am off to bed. First thing in the morning though I am making my own. For gifts we do various things. On my DH’s side we draw names amongst his sibs, and niece and nephews. On my side my nieces and my kids draw names. Then at my grandma’s we each bring a $20 gift for a man or women then trade using a system of drawing cards with highest card going first. The kids of course get gifts but this is nice for the adults.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:12 am
I buy for my daughters and their spouses and grandchildren, my husband and my inlaws. I also buy gifts for my close friends. I don’t stick to a dollar value, I buy something I know they will like, sometimes only a few $$, sometimes more. BUT if I get done my shopping too early, I keep buying….YIKES.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:25 am
We’ve always bought gifts for our immediate family. My folks, my brother & his kids, my DH’s dad & brother (& his kids) all live nearby, so we exchange gifts each year. This year we’ll be sending our Christmas gift to his mom and his sister, as they moved to the Big Island last spring. On his side, they once drew names and the adults exchanged the one gift, but when one of the group received a plain white shirt as their gift, they stopped doing it that way! My bro in law has wanted to do it that way again, but the memories of that disaster are still too fresh for my DH!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:29 am
Andrea,
Your creative insight to this wonderful world of stamping and crafting is amazing. These snow flakes are awesome and thank you for sharing your tutorial. This will make a great decoration for anyone’s Christmas…I’m looking forward to making a few to hang throughout our house and in our windows.
We have always given gifts to every member of our nuclear family until the recent couple of years. For the last two years we’ve given “family” gifts; mostly centered around Christmas decorations for the home or the tree. We add little things for the grand neices and nephews, but even with our small family buying gifts for every member is not financially practical (and we’ve been asked by the parents to keep the gifts to a minimum as they are usually spoiled by the grand parents!) The reason we’ve chosen to give gifts celebrating Christmas for the family is to provide traditions that can be shared every year during this special time.
Happy Hollidays,
Karen

Another cute project. My gift giving has changed over the years depending on the financial situation and the ages of my children. I can honestly say I have done all of the scenarios mentioned in your question.

We always strive to make one special wish come true for our children, and then we gift to our family and friends, we haven’t set up a gift exchange yet, but it may be coming as I found the website elfster this year and found it to be a neat idea.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:52 am
We make the layered cookie jars for most of our friends and buy for our family. We only have a couple neices and nephews and only three sets of parents alive so it isn’t too costly. We do have four kids though so we spend plenty. Most of my friends always consider my handmade card the best “gift” from me as well as a picture of my family and a yearly Christmas letter. I skipped one year and people mentioned it for years to come. I love making gifts if I can because they are always more special!
November 21st, 2008 at 2:04 am
Our Christmas giving has evolved over the years as the nieces and nephews have grown up and gotten older. My family enjoys getting together (I am one of four siblings) but we don’t exchange gifts. Everyone contributes to our meal. I’m usually in charge of desserts. Yum! We all try to get something for my dad (my mom passed away a couple of years ago), but that’s getting harder and harder to find something he “needs”. On a personal note, my husband and I do exchange gifts with each other and with our daughter who is almost 20.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:46 am
We give to those we love and share as finances allow. We’ve done it all, just the kids, drawing names, etc., but I just can’t bear to leave anyone out. Sometimes it’s a handmade item, sometimes store-bought, sometimes from my kitchen, but I just love giving gifts! After all, the greatest Gift was given so freely, how can we do otherwise? Thank you for the way you generously share through your blog!

November 21st, 2008 at 3:04 am
We give to everyone! Often it is something handmade – cards, cookies, slice. I prefer handmade stuff to shop-bought.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:11 am
We give gift cards or certificates. But they are usually “wrapped” in a homemade card or project.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:38 am
Oh! Another very creative project! You just keep them coming and keep us all inspired…thank you! Well, it used to be I bought for everyone…but times have changed…now it’s pretty much immediate family and close friends. I try to throw in a mixture of handmade items. It makes it fun for me and all the while I’m thinking of the person I’m making it for. I enjoy gift giving.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:56 am
My hubby & I don’t buy for each other. This is a very busy time of year & we MAY go shopping together once. I honestly have everything I want. We buy small gifts or gift cards for those we love. I’d rather give something they’d truly love than just because it’s Christmas.
The gift is the relationship, not the present.
November 21st, 2008 at 6:36 am
We go all out and buy for our kids, each other, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, neices, nephews, and a couple aunts/uncles that we are close to, and we adopt a family every year. Christmas is my favorite holiday so we do alot at christmas.
Thanks again for letting me play, your projects are so cute.
November 21st, 2008 at 6:44 am
What a quick and easy Christmas ornament! Thanks for the great tutorial.
My husband’s family buys for everyone (adults included -thank goodness he only has one brother!) and my family buy for the kids only (everyone buys for everyone else’s kids) until they are 16. Christmas is not cheap at our house!
November 21st, 2008 at 6:59 am
Christmas is such a wonderful time to honor the birth of our Savior by giving gifts to our family and friends. A handmade gift is our way of sharing Christ’s love…it takes a lot of time, effort, and some creativity to come up with the “perfect” handmade gift for each person. We have a small extended family, so each person gets a gift. We also fill shoeboxes for “Operation Christmas Child’ in honor of our two boys and our two daughters-in-law.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:49 am
Love the snowflakes. The embossing makes them sparkle and pop! We give gifts to some and others we don’t. We have an agreement with my sister and my husband’s brother since they don’t have lots of money to not exchange gifts. I try to make a small gift for my sister anyway so she will have something to open. Traveling takes most of her money and that is the best gift of all, to be together for the holidays! I would like to enter the contest please.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:55 am
We used to buy for everyone extended family and all. Now that all the kids have grown up, we just buy for our kids and the parents. The economy has taken a toll on us and the rest of the family. Also, we live so far apart that we don’t know each others taste anymore. We just send Christmas cards and well wishes.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:09 am
Fantastic Snowflake Tutorial !!!
We use to buy gifts for everyone but as everyone’s family grew it became way too expensive for everyone. A few years ago we started playing inexpensive gift giving games and then last year we decided to pool the money that we each spent on gifts for each other and buy lifestock for farmers in Africa !!! It is an amazing project and this year we’re hoping to buy water purification systems PLUS lifestock !!!
Have a wonderful day…
November 21st, 2008 at 8:20 am
We exchange gifts among siblings and let Grandma & Grandpa take care of all the gifts for our kids. Since I only have three siblings and my husband only one, it’s not too much to do.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:21 am
Over the past years, I used to buy everything… very last minute too! You know the big mass of people that are still in the stores on December 23 at 11 p.m.? Yup! I’m usually one of them!
This year however, I’ve been making a lot more things handmade. Christmas cards, coasters, ornaments. I’ll probably buy bigger presents for important family members, but they’ll most likely get a little handmade something too
November 21st, 2008 at 8:24 am
I love snowflakes and this is a great project I can do with my neices.
christmas is always a favourite time. My family we buy for my parents and the great neices & nephews and I give a joint present to the nephews & wives. My husband family we buy for everyone(only has mother, brother & sil and 3 neices) Ellen
November 21st, 2008 at 8:26 am
wow love the snow flake my daughter makes these cool snowflakes everyyear with just plain white paper and gives them away for people to enjoy in there home this year will be using skislope paper to make some for our ceilings in the hall love snowflakes
November 21st, 2008 at 8:36 am
Over the years, I have always bought for everyone in our family, including my nieces and nephews. Now, as some of them are getting married, I have changed that somewhat. Last year, I gave a small family gift. This year, I am making things for each family. Giving presents is one of the things that I just love. I get things all year and I would hate to give that up totally.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:41 am
wow love the snowflake! since there are so many people in our family we always draw names. The adults take an adult and the children draw another childs name it so fun 2 see the children get so excited not only to give but to the the fun of going into the store and picking it out by themselves. We also always set a price limit so noone ever feels pressured and they also have to get creative because the price is always under $10.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:48 am
Every year- we purchase gifts for everyone in the family. It sure does get expensive but Christmas only comes once a year. My hubby and I always let our kids each choose a name from the Salvation Army tree, then we let them pick out the gift(s) that they would like to give that child. The kids really enjoy helping someone in need. Makes for a great holiday memory!
November 21st, 2008 at 8:53 am
We don’t have a very big family so we usually buy gifts for everyone…we don’t go too crazy though. We also do some sort of charity, either Toys for Tots or Angel tree.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:02 am
Great project. Thanks for sharing the idea. As for gifts, the adults in our family really need nothing so we tend to just buy for the children. That makes it much easier.
Thanks for the chance to win.

November 21st, 2008 at 9:03 am
We buy for everyone! It gets to be so much. We have gradually been eliminating who we buy for to put more of a focus on the children. We always make sure to do something for a charity as well whether it be the angel tree or the SPCA.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:10 am
I love the snowflakes! Definitely going to make some!
We used to buy presents for everyone in my immediate family, but it was getting pretty expensive and stressful, so now the kids draw names amongst themselves (there’s 7 grandkids). Some years we draw names for a couple amongst the 4 sisters and their husbands and we’ve also drawn a family name and done gifts for the whole family. This year we’re just doing the kids. And we always go together and buy something for our parents. My husband only has 1 sister who is married but no kids, so we buy gifts for them and his parents. Our son is the only grandchild on that side. We also get a name from the giving tree at church and buy things for a boy similar in age to our son- it helps keep things in perspective for him.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:16 am
What a wonderful project for Christmas! It’s beautiful. We usually buy for all our brothers and sisters and the kids. The nephews and neices who are out of high school we normally don’t buy for. I try to make as many gifts as possible and some Christmases my husband has made some woodworking gifts too. I wish I was further along for this year so I’m going to have to pick up the pace!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:21 am
Awesome Snowflake! I think that I’m going to have to order it SOON! As far as gift giving…I try to make something for the “big” people and we buy for our nieces & nephew (I only have 3). Works out good for us:) Thanks for the chance to win this wonderful tutorial.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:21 am
For us since we have such a big family over the years we really only get gifts for the kids and that is a gift in itself there is nothing like seeing them giggle and so excited to open their gifts. Then on Christmas day we go to mass and the kids are always so well behaved that day! lol
November 21st, 2008 at 9:21 am
Over the last couple of years we have scaled down our Christmas buying. The adults draw names, and we only have one grandchild so naturally he has more presents. He puts his presents in a pile and then passes out to all the adults.
Great idea for the Big Shot!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:26 am
Handmade decorations are special. This one is neat. Thanks.
We give gifts to all in the family, but it is a small group.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:27 am
We usually buy for everyone in the family. My husband has a large family and they are so hard to buy for. So this year, I am making most of the gifts for that side of the family! I making some all occassion card sets, mini albums, wall hangings, and photo books!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:30 am
Usually we draw names but last year and this year we’re buying only for the kids. We give our parents gifts as well, they’re usually handmade. I would much rather see use give donation in place of store bought gifts but I know that won’t fly with my family
November 21st, 2008 at 9:31 am
Andrea I am doing a Christmas stamp a stack tomorrow and i was looking for 1 more WOW project as a surprise bonus…THIS IS IT! Thanks so much for sharing…you are awesome.
We have cut way back on gifting over the last few years…only our immediate family, and our parents…angel tree gifts at the local mall are picked up and we buy for someone there. Our office (300 people) donates to Toys for Tots…even if 25% donate…there are tons of gift…
thanks so much..
REbecca
November 21st, 2008 at 9:32 am
I have 11 Brothers and sisters and between them they have 46 kids, we decided long ago if any gift were exchanged it would be a small family gift.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:33 am
Love the snowflake, and thanks so much for sharing! Can’t wait to see what you have planned next! The Big Shot is on my list and now I need the snowflake die too!
We usually go all out for Christmas…this year we are cutting back a little. We are buying for immediate family. I am going to try and make small gifts for everyone else.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:41 am
We only buy for the Kids in the extended family.. there are only 3 now.. so that is good.. The adults don’t want or need anything anymore.. so why just hand over gift certs???
In our little family there is a limit on what you can spend.. nothing big at all.. so it is about spending time with family, not the stuff..
love you stuff.. thanks for sharing
November 21st, 2008 at 9:49 am
Since the economy is so tight we only buy gifts for the kids in the family. The adults only buy what they can afford.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:58 am
Gift Giving each year has always been the kids get gifts, and we buy for the family too. If I can get gifts for each member, I do, and if I can’t I try to get gifts that they can use at least. I have a small family, so it isn’t too expensive, although my nephews are getting bigger and have more expensive taste!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:03 am
Well, in the past we have bought for everyone. This year it will be the kids and less will be more. I am trying to make some things but really need to get moving. As for the older family members, we have stopped giving them stuff and made donations to charities in their name which they really have enjoyed because we give to the places and things that are personal choices for them. They like the thoughtfulness and don’t have to dust or deal with more stuff. Also, framed photos are a favorite with the grandparents.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:06 am
I have three sisters and we are all married. So between the 8 of us we exchange names and never have the same person as we did the previous year. We set a $30 limit on it. I still buy gifts for my college age nieces and nephews.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:07 am
We’re just buying for the kids this year! And it feels liberating!!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:14 am
My husband and I got together with our brothers and sisters and set up a gift rotation with each of our families. We both have fairly large families (6 brothers and sisters on his side, 5 on mine) and none of us can afford to buy for all. Each Christmas we have the name of a brother or sister and their spouse. (One for his side of the family and one for mine). A rotation schedule was set up so you always know which couple you have and can shop, or make something throughout the year. We always try to encourage a homemade gift, they usually cost less and you can make something very specific for that couple. For our parents, each couple puts in about $25-$30 and we go in on a group gift. For my husband’s nieces and nephews, we put all the kids names in a hat, and let the cousins draw a name. They then get to shop for their cousin, $5 maximum.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:19 am
Weusually buy gifts for everyone as our family is not that big. We buy smaller things for the adults and bigger things for the kids. This year we are flying my dad out from Winnipeg as his gift….he is very excited and we can pay for it with points.

Your tutorials are wonderful! Thanks!
My family drifted away from gift-giving, except for my parents, but I never have. Giving a gift is part of Christmas for me. I have 5 brothers 7 sisters, and 19 nieces and nephews. In years past, I would buy or make a gift for each child, and do a couple gift for my siblings and their spouses. As we were blessed with our own children, I changed to family gifts. I strive for something consumable (so it’s not around forever) but fun to receive – stamped ornaments, box of fruit, a stack of all occasion cards, etc. For dh’s family – we still give gifts to everyone – and dh used to have a different standard for his family than mine because there were less people to buy for. That has since changed, and both family’s are treated equally as far as gift giving. I have always tried to make it clear that I was giving because it wouldn’t be Christmas without it for me, but that NO ONE should feel they must give because they receive – that is so not the point for me. I encourage those with children to have the kids make things, even just draw pictures as gifts. A very small thing done with a very big amount of love is priceless, AND the true spirit of Christ and Christmas! Thanks for asking!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:36 am
WOW! Your site is always so inspiring!
Since we started doing foster care about 8 years ago, our Christmas gift giving has changed. We have tried to incorporate homemade gifts – from wood worked items like my ink caddy from my dh, to fleece quilts made with my son and foster sons. We draw names among the grandkids, and the adult children go out for a dress-up dinner as a gift of time with each other. Merry Christmas (early) EVERY ONE!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:40 am
A couple of years ago mine and my husband’s sibling agreed to just get christmas presents for the kids. We also buy for my parents, unfortunately my husbands parents are no longer with us.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:41 am
Wow Andrea!! Thanks for sharing your creativity with us. You are so inspiring to us all.
In our family we purchase gifts for all the children. Then we draw names amongst the adults. I usually make a small handmade gift for each of the adults. My girls now make a card and ornament of some type to attach to their cousins gifts. They love this family tradition. We also make the gift tags. Another one of our traditions is that the girls and I take a Sunday spend it in our pajamas making cookies, tags, decorating tissue paper and wrapping paper.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:44 am
I just love your tutorials!
We still buy gifts for our three children and 5 grandchildrenas we don’t have a large family. I make them something each year and then buy a gift. But….this year I am doing all handmade gifts, as I feel the mean more.

November 21st, 2008 at 10:54 am
Thanks for all the great ideas!
My husband’s family is small – only one sister and his mom, so everyone exchanges gifts. I have 3 brothers who all have families of their own, so this year we are just getting gifts for the kids – each child’s godparent buys them a gift. With my cousins, each person brings a $20 gift, and then we draw number and get to pick an unwrapped gift. If you like a gift someone else has over the gift you picked, you can steal it away. It’s lots of fun, and focuses more on having fun with family than on the gifts themselves.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:05 am
I start early and make a lot of my presents…..It’s much more affordable that way! This year I’m making packs of greeting cards, mini chipboard scrapbooks, bookmarks, framed stamped art……anything I can think of…..
November 21st, 2008 at 11:11 am
This year it’s a bit of everything. We’ve decided to buy just for the kids, I have a friend who I’m buying a charity gift for (probably two rabbits and a chicken) and then I always buy for my kids, of course. For people at work, I usually make something–this year it’s fruit cake and probably some cards.
Love your blog and thanks for sharing.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:14 am
Wow! Cute ornament! In our family we only buy presents for the children. As for the adults each family will receive a family photo. We love this and always love to see how everyone has changed year to year! Happy Holidays!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:16 am
Your site is so addictive! What fun!!:)
Our gift giving focuses on the immediate family. Since we moved, and the children have their own appartments, they received an additional package of mementoes from their childhood. It was pretty entertainig!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:16 am
We are just buying for the kids this year. Of course that means we are buying for our own 4 and then 5 others. So it will still be expensive just not too bad. We have decided that we will give the adults baked goods though. I am thinking of giving the SIL’s and mom’s cards though. We’ll see. Love the tutorial. Now if I just had a big shot.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:17 am
We buy gifts for everyone in the family. Our family is relatively small so it is not that hard for to do. Nancy
November 21st, 2008 at 11:17 am
This ornament is so adorable. Now I wish I had the Big Shot to create this. I can’t wait to see what other ideas you have.
In my family we all exchange gifts. Usually my sister and I buy a gift for eachother and their spouse (a couple gift). We always buy for my parents and of course the kids in our family. Each year I make my Mom a scrapbook calendar. I think this is something she appreciates the most.
For my husband’s side of the family, we usually just buy for the kids, but sometimes draw names.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:24 am
My 2 sisters and my brother all live in other parts of the country. We buy gifts for all of them. My DH’s family comes to our house for Christmas Eve and we have a gift swap like the dirty Santa game described above (we call it the Gift Stealing Game). Only the adults do this game. We buy something for each of the kids.
Love your designs!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:26 am
We draw names in both our families during Thanksgiving just for the children. For the adults, we play white elephant where everyone brings a gift of a certain dollar amount. This works wonderfully – the kids get a present, and the adults have a ton of fun. Helps out with all the expense associated with Christmas too. We also give a money gift to our church for their Christmas Sheaves for Christ offering as well.
Thanks again for another chance to win this tutorial – you are so awesome!!

We usually buy for the grandkids and the adults play dirty Santa. We have enough “stuff”. I will make some handmade things, which I love to both give and receive. The guys especially love anything from the kitchen!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:34 am
For us this is how it goes:
Married: couple gift
Children: 2 gifts (or 1 BIG gift)
Teens: Gas card or food gift card(they LOVE it)
Grandparents: A book in their name at the library-they love to read-so this fits them OR
a gift card to the local nursery.
For our family this has always worked out nice. You aren’t stuff buying a ton of presents.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:44 am
I do all the above. I try to give homemade gifts to people at school and friends. I love doing that. Then I give to charities…not much but enough that makes me feel good! Holidays are a out family and giving love in your life!
Thank you Andrea. kt

We used to draw names we my side of the family and that just fizzled away. Now I amke something for everyone. We buy gifts for each other in my family. My extended family, I make gifts for everyone. Some of them, I cannot make for, so we buy something.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:46 am
Love the snowflake! I was trying to avoid purchasing the die, but now I don’t know how to avoid it!
I don’t have a large family, so hoildays aren’t that complicated. I only have 1 sister with no kids and my husband’s sister only has 2 kids. So, we do primarily buy for the kids and then everyone else gets a little gift card or something smaller.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:48 am
The last few years the only extended family I give gifts to is my niece and nephew. I usually make most of the gifts we give to all my family due to finances. We only send cards to my dh’s family. Years ago when I was a child we drew names between all my cousins on my mom’s side and sent an appropriate gift. At church we do the “Stealing” game which is great fun at the annual adult Christmas party. Your ornament is very pretty and I appreciate the tutorials! Thanks so much.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:52 am
In our immediate family (parents, siblings, children, etc) we buy for everyone. It gets quite expensive, especially the stocking stuffers, but it is fun. For the entended relatives, we just send a card.

I can’t wait to try this snowflake when my company leaves on Sunday! I love it. I decoration that the kids can’t break. Got to love that too!

I love your snowflake tutorial (as well as all your other tutorials). My husband & I are retired grandparents and as of 2 yrs. ago we discontinued buying for adults and only get gifts for our grandchildren and one special needs friend. We found that spending Christmas Eve/Christmas Day together eating traditional favorites and enjoying the company of family and friends is what the holidays mean to us. After all, Christmas is all about children and seeing their eyes light up when they open that special gift from grandpa & grandma. Hope you and your family have a very special holiday season in your new home.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:58 am
We are gift givers. We buy until we can buy no more. My kids are that way also. Happy Holidays.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:58 am
We have a small family on both sides, so I buy something for everyone. This year my 6-year-old daughter is making ornaments from a kit we found at Hobby Lobby and for my friends I’m making their gifts using the decor elements from SU! Trying to do more “making” of gifts rather than buying.
My nephew loves the Colts, so I’ve been raiding the scrap bins in fabric departments at Wal-mart and Hobby Lobby. For $1.66, I have enough to make a scarf and for $5.67, I can make him a huge pillow!! Smart shopping is definitely something we are all striving for with this economy!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:02 pm
I love the Christmas season! I give gifts to each of my immediate family members and a few special friends.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Fabulous snowflake. TFS.
We buy for everyone in the immediate family- spouse, kids and their families. Then gift certificates for some of the younger nieces and nephews, and gifts for our parents.
It all can add up so fast, and we don’t have huge extended or even immediate families. Don’t know how people with 5 or more kids in this economy do it.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:04 pm
We give to immediate family only. Our kids and their spouses and our grandkids. We have given savings bonds to our grandkids for many years on both Christmas & birthdays, then when they are 18 they can use them to help with college. The over 18 grandkids get a gift card or check equaling the amount that it cost for the bond.

We give a small gift to everyone. I am happy that I will be able to make alot of them this year, since money is so tight!

What a great ornament, I haven’t ordered the big shot yet as I am only a hobby demo, but this makes me want to jump online and order it. Keep up the great work.
This year we are doing a little of everything, donations in lieu of for the adults and small thoughtful gifts for the kids. Teachers and neighbours will get homemade gifts. We are trying to refocus on the true meaning of Christmas this year and spending more time than money.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
I love the snowflake idea. I get gifts for each member of my family and their spouses/sister. It is only 5 people, so that makes it easy. I get small things for a few friends too (or make a small item of jewelry, scarf or something for them.)
November 21st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I love giving gifts. I try to give as many to family and friends as I can, but only if it is something that I really feel is “perfect” for them.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Hi Andrea,
I love the projects, as always!
Usually in our family, all the children get a gift. With the adults, we often draw names. This year, the adults are giving a small gift that has been handmade – I am looking forward to some special cookies and chocolates from my sister-in-law. She is an excellent baker!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:45 pm
We have a big family, so we draw names every year. I really like it because you get at least one nice/thoughtful gift every year.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
in my family we buy for all kids under 18, then us 5 sisters do sister gifts. Then we pick a star off a christmas tree in a store and buy for that child. We always give our mom a gift.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
We exchange gifts with my family and our closest friends. My husband’s family doesn’t exchange gifts – seems odd to me but hey their choice. Thanks for the snowflake tutorial – gotta get that snowflake die! Clara Sanchez
November 21st, 2008 at 12:56 pm
We buy gifts for our immediate family, but we have a gift exchange for our friends and family (only adults in our family) that come for Christmas dinner. Everyone brings a wrapped gift ($25 value)and we read a Christmas story about the Wright (right) family. Each time the word Wright is said, the gift is passed to the right and when the word left is read, the gift moves to the left. It has been a lot of fun, moving the gifts around the room. When the story ends you get the gift you are holding. Next year, we will have some new babies in the family, so we will be changing what we do.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:01 pm
These totally rock, and if I had a die cutting system I would so be making these right now!!
As for buying gifts, my hubby and I come from large families, so on hubbies side we buy for grandma and grandpa, and the cousin that is the same age as my son. All the grandkids on that side came in pairs. We also make a little some thing for teachers. For my side we have always done a draw names thing with a $50 limitjust for the adults, and bought for the two kids. This year we are pooling our adult draw money and donating it to a charity the we all agreed onm and still buying for the kids. For my extended family we exchange Christmas ornaments, the only stipulation is that it has to have the other persons name and the year. one year my grandpa got that singing fish.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I love the snowflakes!! BEAUTIFUL!!
We only buy for our neices and nephews, not the entire family on my husbands side, and of course we buy for my MIL. On my side, we buy for everyone, but we are a small family!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Love the snowflake!!!
In the past we have all exchanged gifts, we have no little ones in our immediate family – I am the youngest at 38. We are also a small holiday gathering there are only 7 of us.
This year I proposed that we all do homemade gifts – give from the heart and all that. NOPE. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. It really wasn’t reasonable. K and I could have done it easily enough but my in-laws really aren’t capable of doing that. So instead my mother-in-law gave my sister-in-law and I a list of things she wants for us to choose from; my father-in-law and my sister-in-law’s mom gave us their usual “I don’t want nuthin’” speeches. So with all that being said, I don’t know what we are going to do this year!!!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:26 pm
We have a relatively small family so we do buy or make small things for everyone. For my parents and my in laws, we have ordered out of the Operation Christmas Child magazine. My kids have sent baby chicks, and soccer balls to impoverished nations in their name. Love the snowflake ornament!!

We do buy (or make) gifts for all our family, but I make it a point to shop all the after Christmas sales and clearance. I get great things at a fraction of the cost. The only drawback is storing it for a year!

Love the ornament!
It is a tradition in our family to spend Christmas Day together at my parents’ home. We all give gifts to each other, adults and children. There are 15 of us. We share a wonderful meal together, then my Dad reads the Christmas story from the Bible, and then we open the gifts. Just a wonderful time!
November 21st, 2008 at 2:12 pm
I send gifts to all my immediate family – my brothers, sisters, and father & nieces & nephews that are ages 18 & under. Since I’m in Texas and everyone else isn’t, I frequently send giftcards. I have fun making handstamped giftcard holders.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I make a few presents. And we buy for children at the various places we visit. I usually pick up a lot during the year when i find sales.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Once again, you amaze me. I love the big shot snow flake and can hardly wait to get home to make this ornament.
Christmas, I love giving gifts to lots of people but almost get embarassed when someone gives me one when I wasn’t expecting it, but do like homemade cards or gifts the best. Hardest problem, especailly for the grandkids is knowing what to get them that they already don’t have. I would love if everyone who usually gives me a gift just donate the money to the Food bank or the angel tree instead to help out a kid who has so little.

I work for a great company that will match all the moeny donations I give so I try to donate money to several charities over the holidays so that others can also have a Happy Holiday. I make handmade gifts for friends and family but also buy some gifts from their wish lists.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:35 pm
This snowflake is so pretyy and will look great hanging in our walkway. As for giving gifts, we get gifts for all the adults that we see and I always send gifts to my neices and nephews that we don’t get to see. I love shopping for gifts for the kids, and seeing how all the things that I used to play with in the 80′s are now making a comeback.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Hey Andrea! Thanks for all your ideas!! Love love LOVE to come here for inspiration!!
Anywho, gifts-unfortunately I’ve never gotten my extended family on the same page as me, so we are still giving individual gifts. I really want to draw names, but no one else is hopping on board.
A few years ago when money was really tight at our house, we MADE gifts for family groups -my Dad and his wife, my brother and his family, etc. It was such a hit that we still do it! Although it isn’t cheap to make gifts, it is still cheaper than buying individual gifts AND it’s become a more thoughtful tradition. We make banana chocolate chip bread, fudge, homemade candles and papercrafts.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Cute snowflake tutorial!
In years past, our family has drawn names and done a gift exchange that way. This year, because money is so tight for everyone, our family has agreed to only get gifts for the kids… for us adults it’s “the gift of family”.

WE mostly draw names except for our parents and our kids. The kids draw the names. Sometimes we do a family gift.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
We let the kids draw names when they were little. Last year we had a gift swap, each person gave away the worst gift they ever got! It was quite funny!
November 21st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Because my family is large (4 siblings plus their spouses, my parents, 3 nieces, 1 nephew) we draw names. We can’t tell each other who we pick so it’s a secret until Christmas. We’ve created an online wish list so we can choose gifts without asking the person who we drew. My husband’s family is smaller (1 sister her husband, their son and his parents). We purchase gifts for everyone on his side of the family.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:11 pm
For Christmas we usually buy everyone a gift. This year I am trying to make my husband’s family gifts. For my family we are going to be getting them gift cards and I will be making them a gift as well. In some ways I wish we did draw names there are 9 on my husbands side and 4 on mine. My husband and I usually don’t buy each other a gift.

I buy for everyone! Family friends…I like to make homemade things when I can. We tried the drawing names thing or occassion or two..but always go back to buying for everyone.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
We do a pollyanna for both the adults on both sides of our family and buy for each kid. Thank goodness there aren’t that many kids! We also buy for my grandmother and an aunt/uncle on my husband’s side.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
My family is pretty small so we almost buy for everyone. We don’t go crazy spending a lot of money but it’s nice that we’re still able to do it.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:09 pm
thanks for this opportunity. Love the tin!!
Our family on my side draws names for whoever is going to be there xmas day and everyone over 16 is included. we all buy for anyone under 16, on the other side there is only my husbands mom and man is she tough to buy for!!. Since there is so few i splurge abit on my girlfriends and we all get together (this sat nite) with our hubbys and have a xmas party. lots of fun if you can imagine!
November 21st, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Don’t you just love this time of year!!!
Gift giving in our family used to be gifts for everyone! Then it was narrowed down to adults picking a name and gifts for all kids. Now we just buy for the kids and the adults have a Yankee Swap…the kids are getting older now and want in on this too!
November 21st, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Seems our family is getting smaller instead of bigger! We buy/make gifts for our parents and our sisters and brothers and their spouses, and for our own children and grandchildren. My husband and I are fortunately well settled and don’t need much so each year we give ‘our gifts’ to a charity.
Love your projects!

We do a lot of holiday shopping. I purchase gifts for my parents, two grandmas, my 2 sisters, my daughter, my 2 dogs, my cousins kids – we all have little ones (7 in all). Then we purchase gifts for my in-laws (parents, brother, sister) and I’m sure there are more here and there! It’s insane!
Happy Holidays,
Heather

For my husband’s side of the family we mainly buy for the kids. There are three cousins. There are no children on my side of the family yet so we do buy for each other but it is just my mom and brother and sister. Everyone buys within their budget and we are all happy to be together. The last few years I’ve really enjoyed making gifts such as card sets, coaster tiles, ornaments, scrapbooks, etc.
November 21st, 2008 at 6:10 pm
wow so fun. we buy for all neices and nephews, draw for siblings, sometimes combine for paretns. hum, gift giving is so much fun.
November 21st, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Cute project!! We do a little of everything! One side of the family it’s kids only with a budgeted amount. The other side it’s all the kids, but the adults draw names with a small budget! Fun to see who gets who on Christmas Day and see how everyone stretches their dollars!
Can’t wait to read all these replies for some more good ideas!

Yet another wonderful tutorial ……. I only wish I could play but not today (don’t have the Big Shot).
On my side of the family we pick names. We used to have kids pick names for kids and the same for adults. However as our kids are now older we throw in everybodies name and it works great.
Thanks again Andrea for all you do!!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Since our family is small…2 married children and 3 grandchildren…we all buy gifts for everyone. It gets CRAZY on Christmas morning when we are all together, but we love it! I love checking out your project each day. Thanks, Joyce

My favorite family/friends gifts come from my heart—designing 1st. on paper w/pencil, then either creating with fabric, or SU! c.s.,adding fancies to make the item bling,as well, making decorative bags, filling them with the whipped shortbread cookies, or h.m. almond bark. I loveeeeee being creative, whether it is with the camera, paper, fabric, kitchen accesssories,
dg biscuits… handing out specials to our street friends, particularly the kids whom have dogs. There’s no end!!!!!

Wow, what a fabulous idea – the snowflakes are gorgeous.
I am one of 13 and so we do not exchange with everybody – if we did my husband & I would be broke:) We usually just buy for the ones we are closest to and then when we have our family Christmas we are doing a voluntary gift exchange by age groups. It is usually a blast with so many of us together. This year will be extra special since my oldest brother & his family are home on furlough. They will be able to join us.
Thanks for sharing your creativity with us.

Gift giving at our house has 2 different methods for the 2 different sides of the family. For my hubby’s family we give eachother a list of charities we support and the giver will give in our name. This works GREAT if the giver actually uses the list you give them (not always the case). So although the charity designated may not get the donation, at least we know that a worthy charity does. That is the WONDERFUL part.
On my side of the family we all travel in for a few days and the expense can get high (hotel, air, car rental, dog kennels, etc) so we gift all the children (cousins, nieces & nephews). For the adults we do gift but at much smaller amounts.
Lets face it, the holiday season is enjoyed most with our friends and families spending time together and watching the surprise and joy in each child’s eyes as he/she opens their gift(s).

Your snowflake is beautiful! And the colors work perfectly.
I make a lot of my gifts, which makes it possible to give even a small something to everyone I wish.

I buy lots of gifts at Christmas. On my side of the family we buy everyone a gift, but put a limit of $25 on it. I have 3 sisters, 2 BIL, 4 nephews, and a great niece plus my parents. I also buy for my grandmother and several aunts and great niece. On my DH side, we only buy for his parents and the nieces, nephews, and great-niece(altogether 11 people). We open gifts at my parents on Christmas eve and stockings Christmas morn. We go to my in-laws later on Christmas Day to open gifts. I also buy for my DH and 2 daughters. whew! I am tired just listing all the shopping I still need to do!
November 23rd, 2008 at 2:05 am
Thanks for all the great ideas you share!
For about 12 years, we have hosted the Christmas Soup Night the last Saturday usually before Christmas, for extended family and friends. Now there are 11 kids, the moms all exchange with each others kids, I buy them a pair of new pjs, and all the adults bring a $20 gift for the chinese gift exchange later. We end up with 7-8 different soups, neat that the young Moms have become quite the cooks, WANT to bring a homemade soup…Sometimes Santa comes and brings a treat. Otherwise , we still buy for our kids and gks, often only stockings for each other, and my sisters and I draw to exchange. Every year we try to cut it back for us, and give more to charity.
