Friday Fun Folds Video Tutorial: Matchbook Gift-Card Holder
Posted on: Friday, September 4th, 2009
What? A video?….but it’s Friday, not Tuesday! That’s right folks. Today I’m introducing another video feature to my blog that I’m hoping will become a weekly Friday feature which I call ”Friday Fun Folds Video Tutorials” (remember though, just like with my Technique Tuesday Videos I’m NOT making any promises that I’ll get a video out EVERY Friday - I’ll do my best, but we’ll see *lol*). So what exactly IS Friday Fun Folds? These will be videos featuring cards and 3D projects that are all created by cutting, creasing and folding paper & CS. Now while SOME of the projects MAY be originals, MOST of the projects will be things that are already floating around the internet like gate-fold cards, spinner cards, view master cards, waterfall cards, slider cards etc. So why am I doing this? First off because they’re plain fun to do. Second of all because it’s always nice to see someone else’s “take” on a card. Lastly because I’m trying to build a comprehensive video tutorial library for you that you can come back to over and over again when you’re looking for instructions on how to do a particular project. Sound okay?
My first fun fold project is a little matchbook gift card holder that I designed around Stampin’ Up!’s small open-ended envelopes. Now matchbooks are nothing new and neither are gift-card holders. And I’m sure someone somewhere has probably done something like this before. I however did not follow any person’s project, pattern or idea. I just grabbed my stuff, started playing around with dimensions and came up with the project below. You can see a side view of the matchbook here:

Here’s a view of the gift card holder open:

The video you can watch on how to make this is below. I do have to tell you though that once again I had to laugh as I was filming and then watching it. It seems inevitable that there’s ALWAYS some kind of a blooper no matter how many retakes I try. It took me 4 tries to finally get the video you’ll be watching – each one there was something different that went wrong. In this one my cutting blade popped out of the paper cutter when I put the cutter away down on the chair beside me and skittered across my wood floor with a clickety clack noise. Then, as I was trying to “gently” insert the jumbo eyelet into my tag, there ended up being nothing “gentle” about it – all of a sudden it seemed to decide that it just didn’t want to fit in the hole and I practically had to wrestle it in the hole all the while explaining that you had to be gentle *lol*. Oh well, maybe by the 100th video I do it will be perfectly polished….or maybe not *lol*
Here’s the written directions on how I made this card:
- Cut a 3-3/4″ x 11-5/8″ piece of Pretty in Pink CS. Score it at 1″, 6-3/8″ and 6-5/8″ using your paper trimmer with scoring blade. Crease along the score lines using your bone folder.
- Stamp your greeting from the A Little Birthday Cheer stamp set on the 1″ “flap” at the bottom of the matchbook in Basic Black Classic ink - pay attention to the orientation of the greeting as you want make sure it is right side up when your matchbook is closed.
- Mat a 3-1/2″ x 4-3/4″ piece of Kaleidoscope DP onto the front cover of the matchbook. Set aside for a moment.
- Stamp a cupcake from the Crazy for Cupcakes stamp set onto a 2-3/4″ x 3-1/2″ piece of Whisper White CS in Basic Black ink. Color in the cupcake with a blender pen and watercolor wonder crayons. I colored in the base of the cupcake with Creamy Caramel and added shadows with Close to Cocoa. I colored in the icing with Pretty in Pink and the sprinkles with Pink Passion. I colored in the candle with Pink Passion and the flame with Yoyo Yellow. Glue on pink beads from the pink bead duo onto the sprinkles with Crystal Effects.
- Mat the Whisper White CS piece onto a 2-5/8″ x 3-5/8″ piece of Pink Passion CS. Flip it over. Place about a 1 1/2″ piece of Sticky Strip along the top edge of the CS mat and Snail adhesive on the rest. Center and stick the image to the Kaleidoscope DP on the matchbook cover. Set aside for a moment.
- Take one of Stampin’ Up!’s small open-ended envelopes and trim the envelope so that it is 5-1/8″ long – make sure that the end you trim off is the open end with the flap. Punch a 1/2 oval out of the top front edge of the envelope using a wide oval punch.
- Stamp a balloon from the Crazy for Cupcakes stamp set onto the envelope. Color in the balloon with a blender pen and a Pink Passion watercolor wonder crayon. Add Dazzling Diamonds glitter to the balloon using a 2-way glue pen.
- Grab your matchbook, place the bottom of the envelope in the crease of the 1″ flap. Staple the 1″ flap closed (to hold the envelope in place) with 2 staples (you want them to be less about 1/8″ up from the bottom edge).
- To create your tag take a 3-1/4″ x 4-3/4″ piece of Pretty in Pink CS. Punch out a wide oval from Pink Passion CS and fold it in half over the edge of the Pretty in Pink CS. Stick it in place with Snail adhesive.
- Punch a hole through the wide oval tag with a Crop-a-dile. Insert a pewter jumbo eyelet and set with the Crop-a-Dile. Tie a 6″ piece of ribbon through the hole and trim the ends.
- Stick your gift card to the tag with one mini glue dot. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this video. I’ll be drawing some winners for the Secret Comment patrol tomorrow. I was going to today but frankly at the moment I’m exhausted. It’s been a long and busy day and I’ve had enough of working *lol*

Andrea, I laughed so hard when I read about your video “escapades”. What you see as blooper-filled videos, we see as wonderful tutorials! Not being able to put an eyelet in… that happens to us too! The only thing your so called bloopers do is remind us that you are not immortal as we all tend to think!
Thanks so much for sharing, and I LOVE the idea that you are putting more videos out for us!

Great Job! I just love watching live action. Thanks for another great idea.

Loved your gift card holder and the tutorial! You have inspired me to use this idea as a Christmas idea for a swap I will be doing in November. Now to figure out the cardstock, dp and stamp… Many thanks!

I really like this. I definitely need to make one.

The video was great and your nails are very polished, as was the video. Don’t tell us about the goofs and we’ll never know. This was such a cute idea. One that will be handy for many occasions, I am sure. Thanks for sharing, again.

This is adorable, Andrea. I love the idea of the gift card inside.

Love the matchbook. I like that it is more than just a card with a gift card inside like most others i have seen. Thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful idea and great card! Thanks for sharing with us!

OHHH HOW SWEET IS THIS!! I actually had made a matchbook but using the BAB stamp set and stamped the images inside and will be giving that to my youngest son to give to the kids the 1st day of school as a way to break the ice!!! HMMMM I might have to try this one too and see if I can make it a bit larger and put the images inside the pocket! OHH YOU ROCK!!
September 4th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
I really like this idea. I can see using it for many different occasions. Thank you for the video. I can appreciate how much work must go into each and one that you film. I am a visual learner so they are invaluable to me. As always, thank you for your inspiration!

Great video tutorial. I’ve made matchbook style cards before but not a gift holder too. I like that you have the instructions written out too.
September 4th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Great idea to combine the matchbook and gift card holder!! Thanks for the video! Have a great long weekend!
September 4th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Great idea! I like the idea of making sure the gift card doesn’t fall out! TFS!
September 4th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
I just love this matchbook gift card holder! I thank you and will certainly use your directions, esp. with Christmas coming.
September 4th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Hi Andrea, thank you so much for doing this! As a fairly new demo still, I really struggle with all the assumptions that “everybody knows how to do this simple card, technique, fold, etc…” I would search and search and all my time was spent trying to find out HOW to do something that everyone thinks every knows already! This is great-keep up the work!
September 4th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
You crack me up. I love reading your notes to us as I always feel like you’re sitting here with me and that you’re one of my best friends explaining things. I’m glad that you show us things that you think we might have seen already as most of the time I have not seen them already. Thanks!!!
September 5th, 2009 at 1:37 am
Andrea, I’ve always loved your creations, but this is brilliant! I’m always looking for different ways to present gift cards and this is excellent! I’ll be casing this for sure! Thanks so much for sharing!!
September 5th, 2009 at 2:04 am
Very cute! Love the twist on the gift card!
sorry, but the bloopers are really character making and it shows that we’re all human..and perfection is not the goal… Smiles!
September 5th, 2009 at 2:25 am
Andrea I love this little gift card holder. I had made matchbooks in the past – smaller version with A ghiradelli chocolate inside – but I love that this one will fit a gift card. I also love that you had a bit of a problem with the grommet – I have had the same issue and thought I was doing something wrong. Now I know it is not just me. And the cutting blade flying across the room – I don’t know how many times that has happened to me. I am looking forward to the Friday Fun folds. We tend to forgot a lot of the lovely techniques there are out there.

September 5th, 2009 at 7:25 am
Great vide! Love the bloppers too. Means you’re human.
Things like that happen to me at workshops all the time. My customers get a good laugh. Thanks for doing the video. As a “visual” person, this helps a ton.
September 5th, 2009 at 7:38 am
I will definitely have to try this idea! Something a little different than the usual card! Great video, thanks so much for your sharing your time and talent!
September 5th, 2009 at 7:42 am

Thanks so much for the video…you did a great job! I love making matchbook folders and have made many, I need to do them again. I think I will use them for the holiday giftcards. Thanks for reminding me about them. Yours is so very cute! TFS and for all you do.

Soooo cute. I haven’t ried this but think I will put it on my schedule of things to try out!! TFS.
September 5th, 2009 at 9:27 am
I am so loving this and the tutorial is like the cherry on the top of a hot fudge sundae. I didn’t expect a gift card in the middle which made me even happier b/c my nieces and nephews always want gift cards now that they are older. I was running out of ways to present them so thanks for giving me another idea.
September 5th, 2009 at 10:14 am
great job, i will have to try this out!
September 5th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Great work Andrea! As always, keep your awesome ideas coming. Can’t wait for the next Friday Fun Fold. Have an excellent long week-end.

What a great new take on a classic fold! TFS
September 5th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
One can never have too many gift card holder ideas. This is another great one. Loved the video and the bloopers are funny! Don’t bother to edit them out–they just make us feel more at ease when things go wrong with us. I’m so glad you are adding another day for videos. I’ll look forward to seeing them when you post.
September 5th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
You are AMAZING! Thanks for the inspiration!
September 5th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
It doesn’t matter if your video isn’t perfect. Once again you have a very creative project for us to follow or to give us some ideas for our own unique projects.
September 5th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
What a wonderful idea!! I’m looking forward to trying this for myself!! tfs
September 5th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
THis is great! I am thinking (as I have dial-up, so too slow) of burning it from work and having them all handy here at home! Love to see how you did this! LOL< thanks for sharing your "bloopers" w/ us of the filming-nice to know that we all can have "issues" with the materials! :0)

This is a fantastic card. Very easy to do. Thanks for sharing.
September 5th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
While most stampers may know a lot of the techniques that are “out there”, a person new to all this does not–and that is me. I sure appreciated the tutorial and will not be afraid now to try making a gift card holder.
September 5th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
Thanks for the tutorial. I just finished making one. Quite fun! Got a chuckle out of your eyelet segment.

September 5th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
Great project. Don’t stress about perfection in the video. It makes it much more personal when you have to work through goof-ups and whoopses on camera. Thanks for sharing.
September 6th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Andrea, what a CUTE card. I can’t wait to try it! Thank you!
September 6th, 2009 at 10:02 am

I love this idea for giving a gift card. Great job!
September 6th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
I always love seeing gift card holders! They are the perfect last minute gift. And by making a pretty holder (and always having several themes pre-made) it makes it look likt it’s not last minute!!!
thanks for creating a “library” for us!!! Love your site! And you!
September 6th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
I loved tge video. Great idea to add a pocket inside!

Great card idea and awesome video – I had to chuckle at your comments on the “bloopers” but I think that is part of what makes your videos so awesome – you do stuff like the rest of us – I know I’ve dropped my scoring blade more times than I want to count and sometimes I haven’t found it LOL.
I was getting bored with the gift card holders I have been making. Thanks for the new idea.

I just love how real and down to earth you are. I have you on a crafting pedestal so to speak and knowing that you are actually human is so reassuring for me. I just love visiting your site and I am really looking forward to seeing everything you put into a video tutorial library!
Have a great day.
September 9th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Okay, Now I can add yet another gift card idea to my box. I’m always looking for new ways to dress up the Oh So popular Gift Card. I think it’s a great gift idea but it is too simple & boring looking. This is a very cool idea.
