It’s a busy posting day today. Be sure you scroll down because this is just the FIRST of THREE posts I uploaded today. The next post down is announcing the release of my latest Stamp Class by Email/Class Planner and I’m offering a great give-away for it as I’m celebrating the 2 year anniversary of my classes. If you’re a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator then you’re definitely going to want to check out my third post, as I’m giving away a 1 year class or workhop planner subscription in honor of the redesign of my Demo to Demo website.
Today’s card is a fun, glittery Christmas card I created. You can see the video below:
Directions:

Technique Tuesday Video: Creating the look of distress stickles using glitter & Crystal Effects glue
Posted: Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 | Comments
In today’s Technique Tuesday Video I wanted to share with you a fun technique that allows you to create the look of distress stickles on chipboard letters using glitter & Crystal Effects glue. It’s a fun way to add a little bling to your projects with several advantages: it’s less messy than just using glitter (it doesn’t come off on your hands or your recipient’s hands when handling it) AND you get a much less intense look than you would if you simply applied glue to your project and then sprinkled on glitter afterwards. I find too that when you look closely at the letters (as you can see in the picture below), they have a bit of a distressed look to them – pretty close to the look you would get if you actually used distress stickles.

To see exactly how I got this look you can watch the video below. You’ll find written directions and a full supply list at the end of this post:
Here’s how I made the card:
-
Place some Dotto adhesive on a scrap piece of grid paper. Have a small strip of Dotto for each chipboard letter in your title. Stick your letters to the Dotto on your grid paper.
-
Take an Elegant Eggplant craft Stampin’ Spot and press it all over your chipboard letters until you get the desired coverage. Set aside to dry. Alternately you could use a heat tool to speed up the drying process.
-
Mix a little bit of Crystal Effects with Orchid glitter from the Fine Cosmo glitter collection in the well of a palette or in a small container. Use a toothpick to mix the glitter into the glue – make sure it is well mixed.
-
Brush a thin coat of the glitter glue you mixed over the chipboard letters using a foam brush. Set aside to dry.
-
Take a 4″ x 12″ piece of Old Olive CS (I used textured) and fold it in half using a bone folder to create a 4″ x 6″ card.
-
Take a 2-1/4″ x 5-7/8″ piece of Cast-a-Spell DP, flip it over and place a 1″ strip of Snail adhesive on the left and right edges on the back of the DP.
-
Flip the DP back over and lay a 7″ piece of 5/8″ Black Grosgrain ribbon across the DP, bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the DP and stick them down to the Snail adhesive.
-
Center and mat the DP to the top of the Old Olive card.
-
Take the second 7″ piece of Basic Black Grosgrain ribbon and tie it in a knot around the first piece. Trim the ends with your scissors.
-
Position and stick your chipboard letters to the Old Olive card underneath the DP. Use Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive to stick them down.
-
Stamp the owl and bat from the Halloween Frights stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Basic Black Classic ink. Stamp the pumpkin in Pumpkin Pie classic ink. Cut them all out leaving a very small white border of CS around each image.
-
Position and stick your images to the card as shown using Stampin’ Dimensionals. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

Back to School Card, Secret Comment Patrol & Workhsop Planner winners
Posted: Monday, September 7th, 2009 | Comments
Happy Labor Day weekend! Well I never did make it back to my blog on Saturday as I had intended so today’s post is going to include this card, some secret comment patrol winners AND the winners to the Autumn Days workshop planner.
First off…the card. Now I don’t normally make “Back to School” projects, but as my oldest is starting grade 6 I thought it might be nice to make him a special card to let him know how proud we are of him. In fact I think this year, I’ll probably do that for all my kids.
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, then you probably know how much I love using chipboard. The only problem of course is that once I’ve run out of vowels, I have all these letters left over that I can no longer use to spell words. Today I wanted to show you a fun and fantastic way to use up all those leftover chipboard letters and numbers – this card would work well with those of you that love to use letter stickers in your papercrafting and have the same problem.
Here’s how I made my card:
-
Cut a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Whisper White CS. Lay it on your grid paper. Grab your chipboard and start arranging letters, numbers and even symbols or shapes on your CS piece. This will give you a general idea of placement. Now if you really like the arrangement you came up with, then I’d suggest taking a picture with your digital camera to help you remember.
-
Once you’re happy with your placement, stick all your chipboard pieces to a scrap piece of grid paper using Dotto adhesive. Decide upon your ink colors and then start inking up your chipboard. I used Real Red, Green Galore and Tempting Turquoise. I have the craft Stampin’ Spots for all the color families and find that they are the perfect size for inking up chipboard letters. Press your craft Stampin’ Spots onto your letters until you have the level of coverage that you desire. Let the letters dry OR to speed up the drying process you can heat them with a heat tool. Arrange and stick the letters back onto your Whisper White CS with Tombow multi-purpose adhesive. Make sure you leave room in the corners for your brads. Set aside for a moment.
-
Grab some scraps of CS in colors matching the letters you inked up. For my card I grabbed scraps of textured Gable Green, Real Red and Tempting Turquoise CS. Punch out small circles out of your CS scraps using a regular 1/4″ hole punch. Stick the circles to your Whisper White CS piece with 2-way glue – arrange them in between the letters.
-
Mat your Whisper White CS piece onto a 5″ x 5″ piece of Real Red CS. Pierce a hole in each of the four corners using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat. Insert a 5/16″ jumbo silver brad into each hole. Open up the prongs at the back of the CS.
-
Center and mat your Real Red CS to a 5 1/5″ x 5 1/4″ textured Tempting Turquoise card front using Snail adhesive (created by folding a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of tempting turqoise CS in half with a bone folder).
-
Take a 1 ” x 5″ strip of Whisper White CS. Stamp your greeting in Basic Black ink using the Just Perfect Alphabet. Sponge the edges of the Whisper White CS piece with Green Galore ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
-
Stick the greeting to the card front on an angle using Stampin’ Dimensionals – position your Stampin’ Dimensionals so that they are between rather than on, the letters.
-
Take a Real Red and Tempting Turquoise button from the Playground Designer Buttons collection and create faux thread for each using slivers of matching CS. Stick the buttons to the greeting strip with mini glue dots. You’re done!
*Note: you may notice I use a lot of textured CS and 12″ x 12″ when I make square cards. It just happens that I keep a lot of that type of paper on hand and have lots of scraps to work with. For the supply list I listed the numbers of regular 8 1/2″ x 11″ CS as that is all you really need to make this card.

Hi Andrea, thank you so much for doing this! As a fairly new demo still, I really struggle with all the assumptions that “everybody knows how to do this simple card, technique, fold, etc…” I would search and search and all my time was spent trying to find out HOW to do something that everyone thinks every knows already! This is great-keep up the work!

I love your Halloween story. I have made my kids’ halloween costumes before and didn’t have as many troubles as you did. Last year my son was a fisherman. I made his pants too big and the hat too small. He wore the pants and not the hat. The lures that were supposed to be on the hat went on the vest. He was the cutest trick or treater out there.
I love this card. I really need to get me some of that Halloween DSP. I like how you used black for the card base. You don’t see that much. I LOVE the orange buttons. Thanks for sharing!

Wow – love this scrapbook page! Thank you for the inspiration, I have been into making cards and neglecting my scrapbook pages. This is the boost I needed to get back at those pages and preserving memories. You have got me thinking I should scrapbook my Gram on this page. Thanks so much for sharing!

Baby Card
Posted: Thursday, August 27th, 2009 | Comments
I’m not sure why, but for some reason I’m feeling in the mood to make baby cards….no I’m not pregnant (thank heavens!)…5 children is more than enough *lol* When my husband and I started planning our family we never really discussed how many children we wanted – I just knew that I wanted more than 2 and I always wanted “even numbers”. So after having our first two boys, it was only natural for us to try again…lo and behold we were blessed with a daughter. As we were hemming and hawing about whether or not to have more, we found out we were expecting….and so we had a third boy. By this point I had decided that 4 was nice even number and we would stop there. My husband was scheduled for the ‘ole “snip snip”, but the week of his appointment couldn’t find his health card (yeah, I was suspicous too at first, except that I KNOW he felt like 4 was enough and he’s not normally the type to misplace important documents). So of course here in Canada: no health card, no “snip snip”. About a month later he found his health card (it was at the bottom of his briefcase) but by that time it was too late – the Lord had seen fit to bless us with number 5 *lol* (another boy). I truly feel that the way this all happened must have been part of a divine plan. BUT 11 years worth of diapers is definitely more than enough – I’m very happy with my little “crew” and I’ve also decided that I can live with an odd number of children – funny how that happens! *lol*
Anyways, today’s card has no stamping whatsoever on it – not that I planned it that way, it just seemed to happen. It’s also a very odd-sized card – it’s 4″ x 6″ – which of course means there’s no envelope size that fits it, so when I have time I’m going to see if I can make my own envelope for it. Here’s how I made the card:
- Cut a 4″ x 12″ piece of Whisper White CS (I happened to have some Whisper White textured CS so that is what I used) and fold it half with a bone folder.
- Take a 1″ piece of Sticky Strip and stick it horizontally about 1″ up from the bottom of a 3 3/4″ x 5 3/4″ piece of Certainly Celery CS (I used textured CS because I had a scrap that was big enough). Remove the red backing from the Sticky Strip and take three 3 1/2″ piece of Silver Elastic Cord (from the Mini Catalogue) and press the ends onto the Sticky Strip. Sandwich another 1″ piece of Sticky Strip on top to hold the ribbon ends in place.
- Take a 7″ piece of Bashful Blue double stitched ribbon and lay it across the Certainly Celery CS piece about 3/4″ up from the bottom edge of the Certainly Celery piece. Make sure the ribbon covers the Sticky Strip. Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the CS and stick down with Snail adhesive.
- Take an 8″ piece of So Saffron striped grosgrain ribbon, center it on top of the Bashful Blue ribbon and bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the CS. Stick the ribbon ends down with Snail adhesive.
- Take a 4 1/2″ piece of So Saffron striped ribbon and tie it in a knot around the first piece of So Saffron ribbon – slide the knot towards the left edge of the card. Set aside for a moment.
- Take the chipboard letters to spell “baby” from the On Board Loads of Letters chipboard collection – cover them thoroughly in Bashful Blue Craft ink (you squish your ink pad onto the letters until they are completely coated) and then emboss them with iridescent ice embossing powder & your heat tool.
- Take three chipboard stars (I used stars from a retired chipboard collection that I still have). Cover the stars with So Saffron craft ink and emboss with Iridescent Ice embossing powder and your heat tool.
- Place a Stampin’ Dimensional on the back of each of the stars (cut the Stampin’ Dimensional in half if necessary). Peel the backing off of the Stampin’ Dimensionals. Position your silver cord where desired, trim it if necessary, hold it in place as you stick the star on top – the Dimensional will sandwhich the silver cord to the card front and hold it in place. Repeat for the other two stars.
- Stick the chipboard letters to the card front – I used Snail adhesive but you can also use Crystal Effects or Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive.
- Pierce two holes in the top right corner of the Certainly Celery CS piece with a paper-piercing tool and foam mat. Insert two silver brads and open the prongs on the back. Mat the Certainly Celery CS piece to the Whisper White card front. You’re done!

A Tall Tales Birthday
Posted: Monday, August 17th, 2009 | Comments
Today I wanted to share with you a fun and easy kid’s card. I have to tell you, I almost threw in the towel with this one. This was another one of those cards that began with a purpose and ended up being somewhat challenging. I was determined that I was going to use the Tall Tales DP and the coordinating Animal Stories stamp set which I purchased in June during Stampin’ Up!’s pre-order period. I thought it was so adorable when I saw it online and of course decided I HAD to order them because they would be perfect for kids cards, only to discover that they weren’t quite as easy to use as I anticipated. So for the last couple of months I’ve pulled them out, intending to make a card with them, only to put them away again because I couldn’t get a look I liked. Well today was the day I MADE myself keep going until I came up with something I liked – so here it is *lol*! The only thing I wish was different about this card is that I had a smaller googly eye for my elephant – unfortunately I couldn’t find any when I went searching at the dollar store. I did however buy a few different sizes and next time I’m at Michael’s will see if I can get the really little ones. Here’s how I made my card:
-
Mat a 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″ piece of So Saffron CS onto a Whisper White card front (created out of a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of CS folded in half).
-
Center and mat a 2″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Tall Tales DP (the So Saffron pattern) along the bottom edge of the So Saffron CS piece. Cut a 2 1/2″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Tall Tales DP and layer it on top of a 1″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Chocolate Chip CS so that only about 1/4″ of the Chocolate Chip CS shows below the DP. Center and mat this piece along the top edge of the So Saffron CS.
-
Stamp the Happy Birthday greeting from the On Your Birthday stamp set towards the left side of the card, underneath the Chocolate Chip CS border. Use a stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary.
-
Take a scalloped circle chipboard frame with the center from the On Board Essentials chipboard collection. Punch a hole in each of the scallops with the smallest hole punch setting of your Crop-a-Dile.
-
Color the scalloped frame part with Chocolate Chip Craft ink (either let dry naturally or if you’re in a rush you can dry it with your heat tool). Stick the chipboard circle to the back of the desired DP pattern with Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive. Trim around the circle.
-
Stick the circle to the card front with Tombow and then stick the scalloped circle on with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
-
Stamp the elephant from the Animal Stories stamp set in Brilliant Blue ink onto a scrap of Whisper White CS and cut it out with your paper snips. Stick it to the chipboard circle with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
-
Take two buttons from the Fresh Favorites II collection and “thread” with coordinating slivers of CS. Stick them to the scalloped frame with mini glue dots.
-
Stick a googly eye on the elephant’s eye. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this card! If you haven’t already, don’t forget to enter my blog give-away below!
