Candy Cane Greetings

Posted: Monday, November 29th, 2010 | Comments (18)

I hope all my American friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving (I know you celebrated last week – but we forgot to make mention of it).  Today I wanted to share with you a super graphically simple card I created using the Candy Cane Christmas Specialty DP.  Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Cut a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Real Red CS, and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card.  Set it aside for a moment.
  2. Cut a 1 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS and stamp the greeting in Basic Black Classic ink.
  3. Take a 2″ x 4″ strip of Real Red CS and create a scalloped border using Stampin’ Up!’s slit punch – please note that Stampin’ Up! retired this in the last catalogue, but I still use it because they don’t have a border punch with a bigger scallop like this.  If you don’t have the slit punch, you could punch out 1/2″ or 3/4″ circles out of Real Red CS and then stick them to the back of the Whisper White CS so that about 1/2 the circle hangs below the bottom edge.  This is a faux scalloped border.
  4. Stick the Whisper White CS strip to the scalloped border piece sot hat about 3/8″ of the border hangs below the bottom edge of the Whisper White CS.
  5. Stick the Whisper White CS to  1″ x 4″ piece of Real Red CS, so that the Real Red CS strip shows about 1/8″ above the TOP edge of the Whisper White CS.
  6. Place a medium clear rhinestone brad at the center of each scallop (from Stampin’ Up!’s basic rhinestone collection).
  7. Take a 1″ piece of Real Red Satin ribbon and fold it in half.  Hold the fold in place with a mini glue dot.  Repeat with a 1″ piece of 1/4″ Real Red grosgrain ribbon.  Stick the two pieces of ribbon to the back left of the greeting as shown in the main picture above, using 2 mini glue dots.
  8. Thread two buttons with Blusing Bride CS and stick them as shown with a mini glue dot for each.  Please note that the buttons are not from Stampin’ Up! – they are from my own stash.
  9. Stick the greeting to a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Candy Cane DP with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I positioned it about 1 1/4″ down from the top edge.
  10. Center and stick the Candy Cane DP piece to the Real Red card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.

Today’s card is a fun, bright and cheerful card that I made using Stampin’ Up!’s new Cottage Garden stamp set and Sunny Garden DP.  Because the DP was already so patterned, I opted to only use the greeting from the Sunny Garden stamp set, rather than any of the images. There just didn’t seem to be room on the card for them.  I also used a very easy but effective background inking technique to try and mute the brightness of the Peach Parfait CS which I had texured with my Big Shot and Square Lattice embossing folder.

Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Whisper White CS and fold it in half using your bone folder to create your card base.
  2. Cut a 4″ x 5 3/8″ piece of Peach Parfait CS and run it through your Big Shot using the Square Lattice embossing folder.  The embossing with this particular folder will cause the CS to shrink so that it should now measure approx 4″ x 5 1/4″.  If it’s not quite there, then trim it so that it measures 4″ x 5 1/4″.
  3. Take a Whisper White Craft ink pad and drag it across the embossed Peach Parfait CS.  You want the coverage to be kind of patchy.  Let dry.
  4. Sponge the edges of the inked Peach Parfait CS with Poppy Parade Classic ink and a stamping sponge.
  5. Center and stick a 1 1/2″ x 4 1/8″ strip of Poppy Parade patterned DP (from the Sunny Garden DP collection) along the top edge of a 3″ x 4 1/4″ piece of Poppy Parade CS.
  6. Center and stick a 1 1/2″ x 4 1/8″ strip of the floral patterned DP along the bottom edge of the 3″ x 4 1/4″ piece of Poppy Parade CS.
  7. Lay a 5 1/4″ piece of Poppy Parade ribbon across the seam of the DP.  Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the DP and stick them down using SNAIL adhesive.
  8. Center and stick the matted DP piece to the card front.
  9. Stamp the greeting from the Cottage Garden stamp set in Basic Black Classic ink onto a scrap of Whisper White CS.  Punch it out with the wide oval punch.
  10. Sponge around the edge of the greeting using a sponge dauber and Poppy Parade Classic ink.
  11. Stick the greeting over the ribbon, on the matted DP piece, towards the right edge, with a couple of Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  12. Thread three coordinating buttons with white embroidery floss and stick them to the card front as shown in the picture above, with mini glue dots.  You’re done!

I have to tell you, today’s card just tickles me pink.  I don’t know why precisely. Maybe it’s the towering stack of cups – I usually go through a lot of coffee and/or tea when I am working long hours.  Or maybe it’s  how perfectly the font of my greeting goes with the feel of the card.  The font I used is is a free font dowload I got from Simply the Best Fonts – and it’s called 1942 Report Font.  If you click on the link you can download it for free too.  Although I don’t use downloaded fonts all that often in my card making, I love having that option available to me.  It’s the perfect solution when you just can’t find that perfect greeting.

Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Working in a wordprocessing program like MS Word, create a new document.  Change the page orientation so that it is in the landscape mode with normal margins. Type your greeting towards the bottom left of the page.  Print it out onto a piece of Whisper White CS and then cut your mat.  The piece I used is 2″ x 4 1/4″.
  2. Stamp a towering stack of cups just above the greeting using the image from the Morning Cup stamp set and Basic Black Classic ink.  You will need to create a mask out of a Post It note and you will need a Stamp-a-ma-jig for this.
  3. Color in the cups using a blender pen and the following ink colors: Tempting Turquoise, Daffodil Delight, Real Red, Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie Classic inks.
  4. Use the brush tip of a Sahara Sand Stampin’ Write marker to outline underneath and to the left side of the image.  This gives your image the illusion of depth by adding a hint of shadow.
  5. Cut a 2 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ piece of Tempting Turquoise CS and scallop the left edge (along the 4 1/4″ side) using a Scallop Edge Border punch.
  6. Center and stick the stamped Whisper White CS piece onto the scalloped Tempting Turquoise CS piece.
  7. Stick the Tempting Turquoise CS piece onto a 3″ x 4 1/4″ piece of the type pattern Tempting Turquoise DP.  You want about 1″ of the DP showing to the right of the scalloped edge of the Tempting Turquoise CS.
  8. Wrap about 26″ of linen thread around the DP and tie it in a bow, towards the top of the DP.  Thread some linen thread throught a Daffodil Delight button and then stick it over the bow with mini glue dots.
  9. Cut a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Crumb Cake CS (formerly Kraft CS) and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card.
  10. Emboss the card front with the Big Shot and the Polka Dots textured impressions embossing folder.
  11. Fold the card closed and round the top and bottom right corners with a 1/2″ corner rounder punch.
  12. Stick the DP/image piece to the card front, about 1/2″ away from the right edge of the card.  You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.

Extreme Skateboard Birthday Card

Posted: Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 | Comments (14)

Today’s card is perfect for a pre-teen or teen boy’s birthday.  In fact, I think I may give this one to my son who will be turning 12, instead of the one I made a few months ago.  That’s the beauty of making cards in advance – I have lots of time to change my mind

Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Cut a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of Pacific Point CS and fold it in half using your bone folder.  Round the top two corners with a 1/2″ corner rounder punch.
  2. Cut a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Crumb Cake CS (formerly called Kraft CS) and round the top two corners with a 1/2″ corner rounder punch.
  3. Ink up the Sanded background stamp with Crumb Cake Classic ink and stamp it onto the 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Crumb Cake CS. Set it aside for a moment.
  4. Cut a 2″ x 5 1/4″ piece of DP from the Celebrations DP collection and stick it to the Crumb Cake CS piece, about 1/4″ up from the bottom edge of the CS.
  5. Lay a 7″ piece of 1/4″ Real Red Grosgrain ribbon across the Crumb Cake CS so that it covers the seam of the DP.  Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the CS and stick them down with SNAIL adhesive.
  6. Center and stick the Crumb Cake CS piece to the Pacific Point card front with SNAIL adhesive.
  7. Cut a 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ piece of Whisper White CS and round the top two corners with a 1/2″ corner rounder punch.
  8. Stamp the Extreme Skateboarder image towards the top of the Whisper White CS piece in Pacific Point Classic ink.
  9. Stamp the greeting from the On Your Birthday stamp set in Basic Black Classic ink, just beneath the image.
  10. Sponge the edges of the Whisper White CS piece with a sponge dauber and Pacific Point Classic ink.
  11. Stick the Whisper White CS piece to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Position it so that it is about 3/4″ away from the right edge of the Crumb Cake CS.
  12. Stick two buttons to the left of the image and one button to the right of the image using mini glue dots.
  13. Take a 4″ piece of Real Red Grosgrain ribbon and tie it in a single knot.  Stick it to the existing piece of Real Red Grosgrain ribbo with a mini glue dot.  You’re done!

Hope you enjoyed today’s card!

Thursday Trend Watch: Reverse Masking using Masking Tape

Posted: Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 | Comments (47)

Welcome to our first Thursday Trend Watch.  The aim of Thursday’s Trend Watch is to keep you posted on emerging trends in the paper crafting industry and how you may be able to integrate Stampin’ Up! product into those trends. So where do you go to find out about trends?  Well, quite a few places actually.  My business Sunny Stampin’ Inc. is a member of the Craft and Hobby Association, so that is one place I go.  I look at upcoming products being released by competitive companies in the industry, I look at paper crafting magazines and I check out blogs.  One of my favorite blogs by far for watching emerging trends is Moxie Fab World –  Cath Evaldson’s blog (she’s the creative editor for Paper Crafts magazine).

I just happened to pop over to her blog today to see what’s new, and came across today’s post talking about masking tape. If you visit her blog you can read all about how masking tape is being used in the paper crafting industry. Now the card that was featured today used masking tape that was colored using alcohol-based markers.

My first attempt involved trying to sponge color onto masking tape.  Now because masking tape has a glossy surface, die-based ink just doesn’t “take” with the same vibrancy.  As I peeled the masking tape off of the grid paper where I was practicing, I noticed that it left behind a really cool reverse-mask effect.  As soon as I saw that a little light bulb went off in my head and the idea for this card was born.

Rather than regular masking tape though, I used painter’s tape because it peels off of CS really cleanly.

You can download a pdf handout with directions on how this card was made HERE.

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.
