A Tall Tales Birthday
Posted on: Monday, August 17th, 2009
Today I wanted to share with you a fun and easy kid’s card. I have to tell you, I almost threw in the towel with this one. This was another one of those cards that began with a purpose and ended up being somewhat challenging. I was determined that I was going to use the Tall Tales DP and the coordinating Animal Stories stamp set which I purchased in June during Stampin’ Up!’s pre-order period. I thought it was so adorable when I saw it online and of course decided I HAD to order them because they would be perfect for kids cards, only to discover that they weren’t quite as easy to use as I anticipated. So for the last couple of months I’ve pulled them out, intending to make a card with them, only to put them away again because I couldn’t get a look I liked. Well today was the day I MADE myself keep going until I came up with something I liked – so here it is *lol*! The only thing I wish was different about this card is that I had a smaller googly eye for my elephant – unfortunately I couldn’t find any when I went searching at the dollar store. I did however buy a few different sizes and next time I’m at Michael’s will see if I can get the really little ones. Here’s how I made my card:
-
Mat a 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″ piece of So Saffron CS onto a Whisper White card front (created out of a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of CS folded in half).
-
Center and mat a 2″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Tall Tales DP (the So Saffron pattern) along the bottom edge of the So Saffron CS piece. Cut a 2 1/2″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Tall Tales DP and layer it on top of a 1″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Chocolate Chip CS so that only about 1/4″ of the Chocolate Chip CS shows below the DP. Center and mat this piece along the top edge of the So Saffron CS.
-
Stamp the Happy Birthday greeting from the On Your Birthday stamp set towards the left side of the card, underneath the Chocolate Chip CS border. Use a stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary.
-
Take a scalloped circle chipboard frame with the center from the On Board Essentials chipboard collection. Punch a hole in each of the scallops with the smallest hole punch setting of your Crop-a-Dile.
-
Color the scalloped frame part with Chocolate Chip Craft ink (either let dry naturally or if you’re in a rush you can dry it with your heat tool). Stick the chipboard circle to the back of the desired DP pattern with Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive. Trim around the circle.
-
Stick the circle to the card front with Tombow and then stick the scalloped circle on with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
-
Stamp the elephant from the Animal Stories stamp set in Brilliant Blue ink onto a scrap of Whisper White CS and cut it out with your paper snips. Stick it to the chipboard circle with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
-
Take two buttons from the Fresh Favorites II collection and “thread” with coordinating slivers of CS. Stick them to the scalloped frame with mini glue dots.
-
Stick a googly eye on the elephant’s eye. You’re done!

The googly eyes always “Funs” up a card… This turned out cute for a kids card. I thought they were cute when I first saw them but I thought it would be too challenging for me. You did a much better job then me.
Thanks for the idea

I know exactly how you feel when you pull out a stamp set or papers, and then look at it and not know where to start or where to go after that…But this came out really nice. The googlie eyes are perfect! I do hope to win one of your tutorials…sometime!

Great colors and I think the eye is just the right size. I wanted to like that stamp set but think all the animals are a bit anorexic. The eye makes me notice it less. Thanks for your perseverance. Another cute card.

This would be one of those sets that I wouldn’t be able to figure out how to use, definitely out of my comfort zone. I appreciate the time you put into this, because it helps me with my own challenging paper or stamps.

What a nice use of strong patterned colors. I have to tell you how much I LOVE the idea of doing my buttons with the strips of paper from your tutorial a little while ago. They look so coordinated with the entire design. That’s an idea I will use often, as I see you have done on your card today.
August 20th, 2009 at 9:34 am
