Stampin’ Technique Week (con’t): Shimmer Paint Part 5- Creating a shimmer paint overlay; Shimmer Paint Videos on DVD now available & a give-away!
Posted on: Monday, September 21st, 2009
Today’s card is another very simple one that is going to demonstrate another one of the most basic uses of shimmer paint. THE most basic use of shimmer paint is pretty much using it to ink up your stamp as I did with my Shimmer Paint Part 1 card. Today’s card shows you the second most basic use – and that is using the shimmer paint as an overlay – in other words you use it OVER a stamp image that has already been inked using a Classic ink. It’s a fun, easy and beautiful technique. You can see it in the video below:
Here’s how I made my card:
- Take a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Very Vanilla CS and sponge the edges using Soft Suede Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
- Stamp the greeting (“Season’s Greetings” from the Many Merry Messages stamp set) in the top left corner of the Very Vanilla CS.
- Ink up the medallion stamp in Ruby Red Classic ink. Take a sponge dauber dipped in Champagne Mist shimmer paint and dab it over the Ruby Red Classic ink. Cover as much or as little of the image as desired. Because the Champagne Mist glimmer paint is a sheer, translucent paint the Ruby Red still shows through beautifully.
- Stamp the medallion onto the Very Vanilla CS.
- Clean the medallion stamp very well to remove all the ink/shimmer paint. Repeat step 3 and stamp the medallion onto a scrap of Very Vanilla CS. Let dry (this takes less than 5 minutes). Punch out the center of the Medallion with a 1 3/4″ circle punch.
- Mat the Very Vanilla CS onto a 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″ piece of Ruby Red CS using Snail adhesive. Mat the Ruby Red CS to a Soft Suede card base (take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Soft Suede CS and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card base).
- Take the Medallion center piece and stick a large cream half-back pearl to the center using a mini glue dot.
- Mount the center piece to the center of the Medallion on the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals. You’re done!
I hope you’ve all been enjoying the shimmer paint tutorials. If you’ve missed any you can catch them all by clicking on the links below:
Part 1: Applying shimmer paint direct to stamp
Part 2: Tinting Shimmer Paint with reinkers and using it direct to stamp
Part 3: Painting in an outline stamp image with tinted shimmer paint
Part 4: Creating your own shimmer mist and mask and spraying an image
I’ve received emails from some of you who are on dial-up and struggling to view the videos and from others who wish they had the videos in one easy place so that they could watch them whenever and wherever. So…..your wish is granted! I’ve put together a DVD with 5 videos (the four listed above and todays video), a BONUS Shimmer Paint tips video, PLUS a BONUS technique video showing you how to create a shimmery tinted background using an embossing folder – this is different from any videos you may have seen where the embossed image has the shimmer paint – in this project the embossed portion is the true color of the CS (i.e. Vanilla) and it is the background that has the shimmer paint - I’ll be demonstrating the card to the left. That’s over 1 hour’s worth of videos on DVD which you can purchase for $20 (this includes free shipping to the US and Canada). Please note, I will always continue to provide my videos here on my blog (and on You Tube) absolutely FREE. However, each DVD video that I put out will contain one or two BONUS videos that will not be shared on my blog (these are an extra perk for those that order the DVD). In selling my DVD’s this way, not only does it help out those who specifically request the videos on DVD format, but it also helps me cover the cost of my time in producing these videos.
To order your video please click on the link below:
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! I’ll be back tomorrow with another video tutorial. Yes you read that right. From now moving on forward it is my goal to share with you a video a day (Monday – Friday). I’ve heard from you guys over and over again that it’s so much easier to SEE how I’m making my card – so each project I share with you here on my blog will have a video to go with it. How’s that sound?
What I’d love your feedback on though is whether with the videos you still need me to provide the step-by-step written directions. Please leave me your thoughts in the comments section of this post. One person’s name will be drawn on Friday and that person will receive a free shimmer paint DVD! Oh and by the way, for those of you still waiting for my Christmas Stamp Camp tutorial winner and for the sale of the pdf tutorial – that will be coming tomorrow.

Am I really the first to comment?! That never happens to me!!
Well, you continue to delight and amaze with everything you do on your blog! I have yet to try the shimmer paints so watching how you use them is a sure plus!

Great card! On your tutorials….I’m more a look and see instead of a read the instructions girl so yes, I wouldn’t need the step-by-step.
Everything you both do are just simply fabulous!
September 21st, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Wow, Andrea! You’ve come up with absolutely phenomenal projects and techniques using the shimmer paint. I’ve loved watching each one
As for providing step-by-step … I like them because if I want to read just one part, I don’t have to watch the whole video to find it or if I just have a few minutes, the printed words are quicker and I can print them if needed!
September 21st, 2009 at 6:04 pm
I think that if you go to the trouble of filming a video, you probably don’t need the step-by-step instructions. Anyone who wants to know the steps can view the video. Thanks!
September 21st, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I like the videos, but if I am in a hurry I just read the step by step. If you don’t do the step by step tutorials, I will just have to make time to watch the video. Thanks for sharing.
September 21st, 2009 at 6:38 pm
I love this card and cannot wait for the winners. Oh, I work tomorrow, darn!
September 21st, 2009 at 6:39 pm
I prefer step by step also. I like to read what I’m doing. Seeing does help if you can’t figure out a certain part but hands on is the best learning tool. Plus it keeps the mind working. LOL Thanks for all you do.
September 21st, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I love your videos and don’t need the step by step instructions. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing them with your bloggers!
September 21st, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I do not need the step by step instructions but would like a list of the supplies and sizes used still printed. That way I can gather everything I need before starting. Thanks for asking. Great card and I have really enjoyed this video series.
September 21st, 2009 at 7:57 pm
So pretty. I love the shimmer paint. Thanks too for all the wonderful videos.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Andrea… your cards and videos are art in their own right. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:02 pm
PS… I need a video and list of supplies. thanks for asking.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Andrea, the step by step instructions would be helpful as well, but if it makes it more expensive than the video would be enough. You can always watch the video and write down things as you watch it. Thanks, again!
September 21st, 2009 at 8:11 pm
As a beginner stamper, I like that you include the step by step instructions. Having just discovered your videos, I want to say thank you for sharing your ideas and projects.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:35 pm
You are so fantastic that it hurts!!! In a good way. Great technique! Great card! I would love the DVD!!
September 21st, 2009 at 8:38 pm
I watch the video but then refer to the step-by-step direction when I am trying something out. I hope you decide to keep both.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:38 pm
I love all of your techniques – I personally read through all of your steps every time you post a video so that way I can picture it for myself and refer to it as needed. Then, I watch the video. Please don’t stop the step by step instructions!! Thanks for all of your work!
September 21st, 2009 at 8:45 pm
I love watching the videos as long as the measurements are included. It is nice to have the printed information to refer to but not as important as the video. I am more of a hands on person who needs visuals. No matter what you decide I will still keep coming back.TFS
September 21st, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Andrea, I’m a visual person but from time to time I do refer back to the written directions. I love the videos and I would have to say I love the written directions, so I vote yes keep the directions. Sometimes I’m very lazy and don’t want to watch the whole video to remind me of something so I refer back to the written directions. I know it does take time on your part to do both but I think we all enjoy them very much! Thanks again for all your great knowledge you share with us.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Once again a beautiful card!! I like the tutorials as well as the printed instructions.
Thanks.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:57 pm
I vote to to keep the written directions as well. For all the reasons already stated.
thanks for sharing-keep experimenting for us!!
September 21st, 2009 at 9:01 pm
I really enjoy the written instructions. I can keep them handy and with me all the time. With written instructions, I don’t have to run to the video player to see what step is next. Keep the written instructions coming! Any hints for stamping on gold and silver paper? I want to use some for my Christmas cards. Thank you for you bright creative ideas.
September 21st, 2009 at 9:01 pm
I love videos because I am a visual person and seem to learn better from videos I really enjoy your videos because I love that either your sister or yourself teach us always something new. For that I thank you.
September 21st, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Andrea,
I LOVE to watch your videos. They are so inspiring! I can’t wait to receive my shimmer paints so I can try some of your techniques. I also like to see your list of supplies, so I hope you continue to include them. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
September 21st, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I like to the step-by-step and the videos, so either one is fine with me! You do a wonderful job and I love today’s card!! Beautiful.
September 21st, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Thanks for the great video tutorials…where do you find the time to do all this?
You are one creative gal and thanks for always sharing with the rest of us. I like the written directions just because sometimes it’s difficult to take everything when watching the video. I enjoy coming back to glance over a technique you’ve taught us and don’t always have time to go through the video again. But…do whatever is easiest for you. Have a very blessed day!
September 21st, 2009 at 9:36 pm
I love everything that you do and I for one love the fact that you do include written instructions along with the video – that way I can pay atttention to what you are saying and doing and not worrying about writing it all down while listening – that way I don’t miss any important measurements!
September 21st, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Andrea- Thanks for all the work you did putting together these great tutorials. I am a visual person so I usually just watch the video instead of reading the written directions. I loved your shimmer techniques and plan on putting them together for a stamp camp early in October. Thanks again!
September 21st, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Such a beautiful card. Thank you for sharing the shimmer paint techniques!
September 21st, 2009 at 9:52 pm
I forgot to mention, I do appreciate the written instructions to go along with the video.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:08 pm
I do like both – the tutorial is great for the introduction but then the step-by-step written directions are good for when I want to actually try the technique.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:11 pm
Wonderful video – please know we(I)really appreciate the time you spend doing these. The written instructions are nice but I know they add to your time so I think you could eliminate them. Thanks again!
September 21st, 2009 at 10:11 pm
As someone who works off dialup (yes, my neighborhood is still in the ice ages!), I, unfortunately, do not have access to the videos. It takes me all day to download one video. I totally rely on and appreciate the written instructions! Normally, I can pretty much figure out a card on my own if there’s only a video tutorial available but I recently came across one card that I couldn’t complete b/c only a video was available.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Please PLEASE please continue to include the typed-up instructions. I am often in a hurry and I can’t watch the videos – they take much longer to watch than to read the instructions. I LOVE that the videos are there if there is something I really want to see (or if I have a little extra time), but what I do most is read your instructions, and learn a lot from them too!
September 21st, 2009 at 10:28 pm
What a stunning card–one that anyone would love to get in the mail. I for one am a visual learner so the videos are a big plus for me, however, the written instructions are wonderful so that I can give the video my full attention without having to write down all the details. If I had to choose though b/c you are a busy person I would go with the videos. Thank you.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Hi Andrea, I vote you keep the written instructions for your cards. I’m one of those with dial up service and can’t download videos. It’s really driving me nuts cuz I feel like I’m missing so much. Once in a while I go to the library just so I can watch your videos!! Thanks for caring about all of us!!!
September 21st, 2009 at 11:24 pm
I like the step by step. It’s easier for me than looking up and watching a video. Sometimes they are nice, but most of the time I can “see” the process with the instructions and the pictures.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Hi Andrea,
Thanks so much for doing the videos for us. I, too, would like the written instructions. I like to work with both. And you do both so well!
Blessings,
Deborah
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:05 am
Hi Andrea,
I have to say that while I enjoy seeing the video process, your written instructions are very thorough and I could not live without them. I personally like having the step by step instructions at hand while i am working with a project EVEN if I’ve viewed a dvd/video I still rely on the instructions to guide me through!!!
I don’t think I’d make it on video alone….i’d have to pause and run to the living room or computer to view the steps over and over again and I can see that being a hassle (especially if the tv and/or computer were being used! Panic!)
Your projects are so beautiful, thank you for continually feeding our creative needs!
Dreena
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:42 am
Andrea – I also love watching your videos. But for me I also like to have written instruction at my craft table with me. I don’t always have the access to the TV or computer (share with 3 kids:)
I love all your projects and inspiration. I just purchased your Christmas Jingle Tri-Shutter album and can’t wait to get it! Thanks for all you do Andrea!!

September 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 am
Thanks for the fantastic videos. Your written instructions are usually very easy to follow but watching a video takes any guesswork out of it. Yet another great card using shimmer paint!
Steph
September 22nd, 2009 at 2:09 am
I do enjoy the written instructions along with the video so that I have it there when going to actually try the project. However if the most needed details and directions were in the video along with the tutorial that woiuld work for me just as well . . . Hope this helps.
It has got to be daunting writting it all up and doing a vid! Kudos to you girl!
September 22nd, 2009 at 2:48 am
Your videos are great and very informative. But I like to be able to read the written instructions in addition to watching the video.
September 22nd, 2009 at 3:03 am
I love the shimmer paint videos and all of you videos and creations! You do a fantastic job on them. I like to print out the tutorials, then watch the video and follow along.
Then I save them to my “Andrea & Sophie” file! Thanks for sharing and thanks for asking us what we like! How cool that is! Renee Winch
September 22nd, 2009 at 3:14 am
I prefer step by step instructions instead of the Video. Videos are okay to watch but all I would end up doing if you didn’t do the step by step is writing everything down…and it’s easy to miss something.
Thanks for asking what everyone thinks.
September 22nd, 2009 at 4:04 am
Andrea, first I’d like to say that I love your videos!! That said, I only need to see a video once or twice, but I typically refer to the written instructions repeatedly and keep a notebook with my favorites printed in them. So I guess I’m trying to say that I would love to see you continue doing both the videos and the step-by-steps. Keep up the fantastic work.
September 22nd, 2009 at 4:35 am
I like having the written instructions, especially for cutting/scoring measurements. I find it difficult to write them down while watching the video.
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:01 am
I love this…and I am getting this stamp in my order today…now I know what I will be making tonight…thanks so much.
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:43 am
Thanks for showing us the shimmer paint techniques. The paints have intrigued me, and I wasn’t sure what to do with them. I look forward to looking at your website every day, Andrea! Thank you for all you do!
September 22nd, 2009 at 6:04 am
The video is great to watch, but it’s nice to have the step-by-step instructions for quick reference. So my vote is to continue to provide both. Thanks … Patricia
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:03 am
Andrea, after I saw your first tutorial I ordered all three shimmer paints. Thanks so much for sharing the techniques. I love your website for all your creative sharing. Thanks, Beverly D
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:07 am
Hi Andrea,
I love, love, love that you have done these videos! It is so much easier to SEE how you do the wonderful things you do, instead of reading about them. I hope that you will continue to make more videos of your great projects.
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:11 am
It’s funny you should ask that question because I just said to my self “Andrea does not need to keep posting the details” but after reading why you are making DVD… not really sure. For those that can’t view the video or something like that… for me I say no I don’t need it… maybe just a list of supplies & I don’t need the measurements but maybe some people would other then that I would say you don’t need to do it any more.
This card is wow for a Christmas card would of never thought of using that stamp… I have seen it soooo much & still don’t have it.

thnaks Andrea for all of the videos. I do like the step by step because after watching the video I try to make the card and the step by step is an easy aide to follow. Thanks always for sharing

Andrea,
The videos are outstanding. Very professional in my opinion. I have been playing along with the video’s. I must admit though, the written instructions are priceless. I still refer to them…keep up the great work.

You do such a fantastic job on your videos there is no question they are a big help to all of us paper freaks out here. Your voice is well modulated but crisp and clear and you always have everything prepared nicely and organized. I personally think yours are some of the better videos I’ve seen and am thrilled that you are planning a daily video. Thanks so much from a big fan!

I vote that you don’t need to write out the step by step instructions if I would have the video. You do such a great job with the videos that you make it very easy and understandable. Thank you for all your work.

Andrea! I love this card! very simple and elegant! I have to case this for my SAS!
Thank you for sharing, this is gorgeous!
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:04 am
What a lovely card to send our for the holidays. I love this background stamp and never thought about it as a holiday stamp, but with this technique it works wonderfully!
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:13 am
I love your shimmer paint techiques and do enjoy the written instructions you provide as well. Thanks.
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:15 am
I really like this card. It is very pretty with the shimmer. Thanks!
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:29 am
WOW!!! YOU and your sister continue to amaze and inspire me (and obviously lots of others)! I have enjoyed your videos and the written directions. I realize they both take lots of time, but I really feel
they touch so many in different ways. Some are visual and others need
the written and some lucky ones can just look and say “AHA!” Keep this
up and you and Sophia will RULE the Continents! Again..WOW!
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:29 am
I have loved your videos, all of them, but especially the shimmer paint ones. I was struggling with what to do with them but no more!! I love and am going to try every one of the techniques you’ve shown!
As far as the written directions go, I know that when you do a video I don’t need them. The video is enough and goes into more details then the written instructions do. Hope that helps!
Thanks again!

Thank you for the tutorials on using the Shimmer paint. They have been awesome! I love the videos, but I really love the written instructions. I print them up and then refer back to them whenever I want to try one of your fabulous techniques! Thanks again!
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:08 am
I really like the “To Have & to Hold…” card. It’s very pretty! Thanks for the tutorials.
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:31 am
YES, yes, yes I still need the written instructions….nice to refer back to after watching the videos and attempting a project on your own!! Please continue! Thanks!
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:32 am
I agree with others – yes we need the written instructions. I print them all out – then I can take them to my craft room and follow the directions. It’s extra work, I do know, but they are so explicit and I do appreciate that. Thanks for all your hard work

Another great way to use the shimmer paint. Thanks so much for doing all these videos. I’m so glad that you are going to do more. They are a big help. For me, it’s not necessary to have the written instructions as well. A list with the dimensions of CS and supplies would be enough. I know these videos take a lot of time to do, but I do appreciate them so much!
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:11 am
I really love this technique. It looks awesome. Thanks for doing these videos, it makes me want to sit down and see what I can do with shimmer paint!
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:14 am
I love what you have done with this card. I love your video’s but I also enjoy the written directions. I sometimes watch the video’s and then print the directons for reference. Sometime it is days later until I get into the craft room so the written is a good reminder. I am a hands on leaner so the video assists me with your techniques that you just don’t get from the written direction. Thanks for sharing your creativity!
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:45 am
Thanks for all the videos!!!! Those are so helpful and a great resourse.
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:51 am
I have really enjoyed these videos! As far as written instructions–if it is not too much of a bother I do appreciate them to come back to after I have watched the video or to print off.
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:55 am
Loving the videos, but please still do provide the written instructions. There are times when I am unable (and maybe others, too) to watch the videos, so those are very helpful. Loving it!!
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:09 am
Thank you for all these wonderful shimmer paint videos, I am a version learner, so watching the video is really the best way for me to see how you put a card together. However,a step by step written instruction can be helpful when viewing the video is not an option. But it should be up to you, because I can image that takes a lot of your time to type : )
Thanks again for sharing all your wonderful ideas!
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:20 am
Thanks for the great ideas. I ordered the Shimmer paint but haven’t tried them yet, not sure what I’m waiting for, guess I just need to take the time to play…
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:25 am
Just love your blog and am in awe of of you and your sister. Check in everyday. Love your video blogs and thank you for the techniques on the shimmer paint—was wondering what to do with them. I vote for the videos and the step by step instructions–want it all.
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:10 pm
i have been lovin’ your shimmer paint series. they’re great! i love playing with the shimmer paints and your tips are very helpful. thank you.

September 22nd, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I love these videos, but would love the written instructions too. You and your sister are amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent.
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Did you say a “video every day, Monday-Friday”?!?!? Y-E-A-H! I absolutely love, love, love your videos. And seeing your work from beginning to the end.
Can’t wait!
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:47 pm
I like both the videos and the step-by-step. Sometimes I learn better one way and somtimes the other.
September 22nd, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Your videos have just gotten my creative juices flowing…thanks so much!! I’m a visual learner and they have helped me so much!!
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Thanks so much for the shimmer paint videos. I am ready to try it. I love your videos but also enjoy the printed instuctions. I can really enjoy the video and not have to stop to take notes. Not many demos provide the printed instructions. I appreciate that you do provide them. Thanks so much.
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Andrea, this card is gorgeous, and it is even more beautiful in real life. I just finished making it. Thanks for your simple instructions. What a great technique. I found that just misting the shimmer mist over plain cardstock also transforms it into expensive looking stuff! Wonderful for the holidays.
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:04 am
Hi Andrea, I love your videos, it is lovely to see you making your cards
I would not mind if you didn’t do the written instructions, maybe just the measurements, I find that I usually make my cards similar but change dimensions to whichever stamp set I am using
Thanks for all the time you put into sharing your wonderful creations Tanya xox
September 27th, 2009 at 12:00 am
Thank you for some great tips. I have not used the shimmery paints but plan to in the near future. You have given me some great ideas.
Thanks again for a wonderful and informative blog.
October 2nd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Hi Andrea, I absolutely love your Video’s, but I like to have the sizes of the cardstock and paper in front of me to look at. I still like to have the directions written out to refer back to. I hope that this helps you make your decision. I am loving that now we are going to have a Video a day, whoo-hooo! Love it!!!

Your website is very user friendly and I enjoy getting ideas from it. Thank you for putting so much time into your business for all of us to learn from!
