Elegant Simplicity with Soft Suede
Posted on: Friday, July 10th, 2009
I am so excited! My order from the new Stampin’ Up! catalogue arrived today filled to the brim with new goodies to play with! Of course I just had to crack it open and use one of the brand new stamp sets: Wedding Sweet.
Today’s card showcases Soft Suede – the final one of Stampin’ Up!’s six new In Colors. I was saving this until last (i.e. avoiding it actually *lol) because it’s a challenging color to work with. Although it looks at first glance like it’s a medium brownish color, if you hold it up to Creamy Caramel, Close to Cocoa and Chocolate Chip then you’ll notice that it has a greenish tinge to it and so doesn’t combine well with those colors. It seems to have a similar undertone to Mellow Moss and Always Artichoke – in fact it kind of seems to fall in between those two colors…I didn’t feel ready to try and tackle that combination however. I did notice though that when you look at it as a stand-alone color it has a very rich and elegant feel to it. This immediately made me think of pairing it with gold and vanilla. And they do look beautiful together.
The other thing I love about today’s card is that it is a great example of a beautifully elegant, but SUPER simple card that is ideal for making LOTS of. It also sets a personal record of being the only card I’ve ever made that has NO DP and almost no layers.
Here’s how I made the card:
-
Run an embossing buddy over a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Soft Suede CS. Stamp the large flourish from the Wedding Sweet stamp set in Encore Gold Pigment ink onto the CS. Sprinkle on gold embossing powder and heat emboss with your heat tool.
-
Stamp the greeting in Soft Suede Classic ink in the bottom right corner of the Soft Suede CS.
-
Mat the Soft Suede CS onto a 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″ piece of Brushed Gold CS.
-
Pierce two holes in the top left corner of the Soft Suede CS and insert two gold brads.
-
Mat the Brushed Gold/Soft Suede CS to a Very Vanilla card front (4 1/4″ x 11″ folded in half with bone folder). You’re done!
How simple is that? You can finish today’s card in about 10 minutes.

LOVE THIS! it’s on my wishlist and this just makes it that much more appealing to me to buy! ha!
As for the colour, i noticed the greenish undertones as well. I said it was like “if true thyme (old in colour) and close to cocoa got together and had babies….it would be soft suede!”.
Yummy project!
Thanks for sharing.

Love the elegant simplicity of your card. Sometimes these are the most difficult cards to make. Great job!

I love having the option of clean and simple. I’m not much of a “decked out” kind of card maker. Thanks for showing how simple can be elegant!

Wow Andrea, I love this card! I can see it with other stamps and even as a Christmas card. I happen to be one of those Bold Bright people who has been loving this new set of colors and just needed a slight nudge to jump right in. In a class I teach each Thursday I used Crushed Curry with Real Red for a quick and easy Christmas money card. Yes, it’s bright but it looks great together!
Thanks for sharing you great work!

You are right–simply elegant!

I had the same issues while trying to pair it up! I’m thinking the best way is to simply avoid it, kind of like you did, but at least you paired it with something! The Wedding Sweet flourish is so elegant — a stamp set that I didn’t notice but will have to go back to pay attention to I guess! Love the card! TFS!

Out of all the new colours, Soft Suede is the one that really appeals to me. Combine it with Dusty Durango & Very Vanilla and it makes a nice “fall colour” combination.
Love this super simple card, Andrea.
SIMPLE + ELEGANT = ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL !!

That is funny you saved Soft Suede for last. It is fast becoming my favorite. When River Rock first come out I thought that was a hard color to work with because of the greenish tint but it turned out to be an awesome color. I love that SU! introduces six In-colors each time. The experimenting is half the fun!

Thanks for this beautiful card – I love Soft Suede but didn’t know what to do with it! I can’t just sit here looking at it for a year so it was nice to get a sample from you. Ditto for all the cards you made using the new In Colors. They sure are bright but I like them and can’t wait to use them all. Thanks again.

I love the idea of embossing in gold on this color. I haven’t used the color yet but been looking at it warily. I have to run down to the stamp room and try it. TFS and the usual inspiration.
