A “Scrappy” Birthday
Posted on: Monday, June 22nd, 2009
I hope you all had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend! We sure did although it was a VERY busy weekend. I spent Saturday morning working – finishing up my Tailor Made tutorial – and then Saturday afternoon we took my grandpa to Costco. This has become a ritual for us now where we take the whole family once a week to Costco for French Fries. It’s my grandpa’s favorite thing to do because he thinks that Costco has the BEST french fries anywhere *lol*.
On Sunday, my 6 year old daughter Julia was in her very first ballet recital. As she’s our only daughter, this whole thing was a “first” for us. So Sunday morning while my husband was out golfing with his dad, brother and brother-in-law (they do this every year on Father’s Day) I was at the theater in Guelph, ON (about 1/2 hour away) for dress rehearsal. Two hours later I only had enough time to run home, do a couple of errands, pick up my husband and then we had to leave for her actual recital. It lasted about 3 hours because the dance studio is pretty big and has lots of students. I have to say that I was very impressed with the quality of the production, the costumes and how well all the kids did. Julia was so cute!
I took the picture to the left when she had just gotten on stage for the dress rehearsal. We weren’t allowed to take pictures during the actual show itself so I tried to take a lot during the dress rehearsal. The only problem of course is that the theater was kind of dark and it was hard to get good pictures. This one unfortunately turned out a little bit blurry – but it was one of the best shots in terms of lighting.
Anyways, enough about my weekend. Today I wanted to share with you another “scrappy” card I created. Can you tell I’m loving the “scrappy” card style? *lol* I think my poor stamps are starting to feel neglected. On the other hand, my accessories – which used to just be hoarded – have been getting a good workout!
I got the layout for my card from one that saw in the Papercrafts magazine – the August/September 2008 issue. I keep all my old magazines because I like to browse through them for ideas. One of the things I like about this layout is that by simple changing up the colors of CS and DP you could easily make it into a masculine birthday card without really having to own any masculine stamp sets.
This card is extraordinarily EASY to make. I can’t number the steps because for some reason that feature in my blog editing is not working so I’ll just give you the main elements today – which pretty much is how I created my circles: I cut out a 3″ circle out of the polka dot Sweet Always DP using my Circle Scissors Plus and glass mat and then sponged the edges with Pretty in Pink Classic ink. The pink polka dot DP was punched with a 1 3/4″ circle punch, the striped DP was punched with a 1 3/8″ circle punch, and the Chocolate Chip DP (from the Good Morning Sunshine collection) was punched with my 1″ circle punch. I layered my circles onto a 5″ x 5″ pieces of textured Pink Pirouette CS. I freehand pierced around the punched circles to give the card added texture and interest. The main title rectangle was created out of a 1 1/2″ x 4″ piece of Regal Rose. The letters were cut out of Chocolate Chip CS using the Big Shot and the Naturally Serif Sizzlit Decorative Strip Die. The word “Birthday” was stamped in Basic Brown ink. The rest of the card is pretty much all about adding various embellishments.
I hope you enjoyed this card. Check back later today because I’ll be posting an update to my Inspiration books this afternoon.

I have 2 daughters but neither are in to dance more of a sport kind of family, although my youngest daughter is a little frilly so she may want to try it one day. Wow you had a busy weekend. Sounded like ours. We went to my parents house & worked on the porch addition they are working on. Love the card, you did such a super job on the “Happy” did not even realize that it was punched & glued down, wow is that straight & evenly space. The colors are great.
