Retro Birthday Card
Posted: Friday, February 5th, 2010 | CommentsI’m on a roll with birthday cards! Last week I shared with you birthday cards I made for my almost 4 year old son, almost 11 year old son and almost 7 year old daughter. Today I thought I’d share with you a card I made for my almost 12 year old son and my almost 11 year old niece. Today’s card is another example of how you can take a layout and change up the colors to adapt it to whatever occasion you desire.
Above you can see a close up of the details of the card I made for my niece. Whereas below you can see a close up of the details of the card I made for my son.
You can download a pdf handout on how this card was made HERE. The pdf includes full supply list, dimensions and written directions.
You can watch a video on how this card was made below:
Directions:
- Take a 4 ¼” x 11” piece of Whisper White CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card.
- Center and stick a 3 ¾” x 5” piece of Pink Flamingo DP onto the coordinating CS color (a 4” x 5 ¼” piece of either Cameo Coral CS or Tempting Turquoise CS).
- Center and stick the matted DP onto your Whisper White card front.
- Stamp your greeting from the Birthday Bliss stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White CS. Punch it out using your 1 ¼” square punch. Stick a rhinestone to the letter “o” in the “oh my” portion of the greeting. I popped the rhinestones out of my rhinestone brad casing – you could also use the peel and stick rhinestones.
- Punch out two 1 ¼” squares of CS out of the same color of CS as your DP mat and one 1 ¼” square out of a scrap of white CS.
- Stick the squares as shown in the card pictures onto your card front using two Stampin’ Dimensionals per square.
- Clip a silver mini library clip onto the top right colored CS square.
- Thread a white button with a sliver of white CS and stick it onto the bottom right corner of the top colored CS square using a mini glue dot.
- Die cut numbers out of the same color of CS as the CS squares (Tempting Turquoise or Cameo Coral depending on the card you are making) using your Big Shot and the Timeless Type Alphabet Junior. Stick the letters to the bottom right Whisper White CS square using small pieces of Stampin’ Dimensional.
- Thread a colored button from the Playground Designer Button collection with a coordinating sliver of CS and then stick it onto the bottom left colored CS square with a mini glue dot. You’re done!

Posted: Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 | CommentsToday I wanted to show you a card that follows the same general layout as the card I posted yesterday, only the card is oriented in a “landscape” format instead of a “portrait” format. You’ll notice if you look at the two cards closely, that they share a lot of similar design elements.
You can download a pdf handout on how this card was made HERE. The pdf handout includes the full supply list, dimensions and written directions. If you’re new to my blog, then you may be wondering why I include the directions both in the post and in handout format. The handout is to make life easier for you – if you’re like me and you like to keep an “inspiration” book then it’s easy for you to print off the directions. Then if you decide to re-create the card, or use the layout, all the dimensions and supplies are there for you – you don’t have to waste time trying to figure out how it was made. I include the directions in the blog for those of you that may want to just quickly scan through the directions, or for those of you on Macs who may have issues with the pdf link not working.
You can watch a video here:
Directions:
-
Take a 4 ¼” x 11” piece of Real Red CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card.
-
Take a 3 ¾” x 5” piece of Whisper White CS and dry emboss it using the Big Shot and the Perfect Polka Dots textured impressions folder. Center and stick the Whisper White CS piece to your card front using Snail adhesive. Set aside for a moment.
-
Take a 2” x 5 ¼” piece of Certainly Celery CS and punch the edge using the Pinking Hearts border punch.
-
Center and stick a 1 ½” x 5 ¼” piece of DP from the Happy B-Day Simply Scrappin’ Kit to the pinked Certainly Celery CS.
-
Stick the matted DP onto the card about ¾” up from the bottom edge of the card – the right edge of the matted DP should be flush with the right edge of the card and the left edge of the matted DP should be flush with the left edge of the Whisper White CS piece.
-
Cut a 5” piece of the ¾” Real Red polka-dot grosgrain ribbon, and with the stitched side facing upwards, cut the left end at an angle.
-
Stick the ribbon to the card using Snail adhesive – you want the straight edge of the ribbon to be flush with the right edge of the card.
-
Stamp the “and many more” greeting onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Basic Black Classic ink. Punch it out using the small tag punch. Punch a larger tag out of Real Red CS using the tag punch.
-
Center and stick the greeting tag onto the Real Red CS tag using Stampin’ Dimensionals. Stick the tag to the card so that it is towards the right side of the card and overlaps the ribbon, using Snail adhesive.
-
Take an 8” piece of ¼” Real Red grosgrain ribbon and tie it in a bow. Stick the bow just above the tag with a mini glue dot.
-
“Thread” three buttons with coordinating slivers of CS and stick them to the card front as shown using mini glue dots. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project!

A Card “For You”
Posted: Monday, February 1st, 2010 | CommentsI hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Today I want to share with you a card that although in Valentine’s colors, is not intended for Valentine’s. I find that with every season, I tend to stick to the colors of that season in my paper crafting. Hence the pink and brown LOL.
You can download a pdf handout on how to make the card HERE. The pdf includes a photo, full supply list, dimensions and step-by-step directions.
The video on how this card was made is below:
Directions:
- Take a 4 ¼” x 11” piece of Chocolate Chip CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card.
- Take a 3 ¾” x 5” piece of Whisper White CS and dry emboss it using the Big Shot and the Perfect Polka Dots textured impressions folder. Center and stick the Whisper White CS piece to your card front using Snail adhesive. Set aside for a moment.
- Take a 1 ⅜” x 4 ¼” piece of Pretty in Pink CS and scallop the edge using the Scallop Trim Border punch. Center and stick a 1” x 4 ¼” piece of DP from the Sending Love DP collection onto the Pretty in Pink CS border.
- Stick the matted DP border to your card about a ½” up from the bottom edge of the card.
- Cut a 3 ⅞” piece of ⅝” Chocolate Chip Grosgrain ribbon. Trim one end on an angle. Place Snail adhesive on the back of the ribbon piece, on both ends. Stick the ribbon to the card front – you want the straight edge of the ribbon to be aligned with the right edge of the card front. The bottom of the ribbon should be about ¼” down from the top edge of the Pretty in Pink CS strip.
- Stamp the label from the Great Friend stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Chocolate Chip Classic ink. Stamp the “for you” greeting inside the label also using Chocolate Chip Classic ink. Use a Stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary. Cut out the label using your paper snips, being sure to leave a very small border of white around it.
- Die cut a matching label out of Chocolate Chip CS using your Big Shot and the Stampin’ Up! Matchbox die. Set aside for a moment.
- Pierce a hole in the top and bottom of the greeting label and insert a small clear rhinestone brad into each hole. Open up the prongs at the back.
- Center and stick the greeting label to the die cut Chocolate Chip label using Stampin’ Dimensionals. Stick the matted label to the card front (towards the right edge of the card, slightly overlapping the ribbon) with Snail adhesive.
- Stick the flower and the leaves shown from the Sweet Pea stitched felt collection to the left of the label (as shown in the picture) using mini glue dots.
- Die cut a butterfly out of Pretty in Pink CS using your Big Shot and the embosslit Beautiful Wings. Stick the butterfly to the label (just to the right of the rhinestone brad) with a mini glue dot. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project!

Simple Valentine
Posted: Friday, January 29th, 2010 | CommentsToday has certainly been a busy day, but then most days are so. I wanted to try out a simple card today, something which does not always come easily to me. So I went and browsed around the Internet, and came up with a really simple design that I liked by Nichole Heady. She has a really lovely simple yet elegant style. Since I am not allowed to put a direct link to the card, I placed a picture to show you the card that I meant. I just changed some little things, but definitely stayed with the same feel.
I really like the idea of having the punches of color on a White Backdrop. So I hope you enjoy today’s post and I will see you all again next week.

Lots of Bots & Pony Party Birthday Cards
Posted: Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 | CommentsToday I decided to take a little break from Valentine’s Day projects and focus on some kid-centered projects. In the next few months I’m going to need a birthday card for both my second son, who is turning 10 and my daughter, who is turning 7.
Although we don’t tend to show a lot of these kinds of projects on our blog, kid-focused projects are something we LOVE to do. Both Soph and I craft quite a lot with our kids, as well as offer local Mom & Me classes. Since Soph and I are now gearing up for our March Break Madness online course (which I’ll share more about later), I thought it would be the perfect time to show you a fun kid-card.
When making my cards I decided to keep to the same layout for both, and simply alter colors, images and accessories. I did this to make it easier for ME, but also to show you how easy it is to take a layout you like and adapt it to suit your needs.
Here’s a close up of the details on the card:
For my daughter’s card I used the Pony Party stamp set:
