Back to School Card, Secret Comment Patrol & Workhsop Planner winners

BacktoSchool

Happy Labor Day weekend! Well I never did make it back to my blog on Saturday as I had intended so today’s post is going to include this card, some secret comment patrol winners AND the winners to the Autumn Days workshop planner.

First off…the card. Now I don’t normally make “Back to School” projects, but as my oldest is starting grade 6 I thought it might be nice to make him a special card to let him know how proud we are of him.  In fact I think this year, I’ll probably do that for all my kids.

If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, then you probably know how much I love using chipboard.  The only problem of course is that once I’ve run out of vowels, I have all these letters left over that I can no longer use to spell words. Today I wanted to show you a fun and fantastic way to use up all those leftover chipboard letters and numbers – this card would work well with those of you that love to use letter stickers in your papercrafting and have the same problem.

Here’s how I made my card:

  1. Cut a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Whisper White CS.  Lay it on your grid paper.  Grab your chipboard and start arranging letters, numbers and even symbols or shapes on your CS piece.  This will give you a general idea of placement.  Now if you really like the arrangement you came up with, then I’d suggest taking a picture with your digital camera to help you remember.
  2. Once you’re happy with your placement, stick all your chipboard pieces to a scrap piece of grid paper using Dotto adhesive.  Decide upon your ink colors and then start inking up your chipboard.  I used Real Red, Green Galore and Tempting Turquoise. I have the craft Stampin’ Spots for all the color families and find that they are the perfect size for inking up chipboard letters.  Press your craft Stampin’ Spots onto your letters until you have the level of coverage that you desire.  Let the letters dry OR to speed up the drying process you can heat them with a heat tool. Arrange and stick the letters back onto your Whisper White CS with Tombow multi-purpose adhesive.  Make sure you leave room in the corners for your brads. Set aside for a moment.
  3. Grab some scraps of CS in colors matching the letters you inked up.  For my card I grabbed scraps of textured Gable Green, Real Red and Tempting Turquoise CS.  Punch out small circles out of your CS scraps using a regular 1/4″ hole punch. Stick the circles to your Whisper White CS piece with 2-way glue – arrange them in between the letters.
  4. Mat your Whisper White CS piece onto a 5″ x 5″ piece of Real Red CS. Pierce a hole in each of the four corners using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat. Insert a 5/16″ jumbo silver brad into each hole.  Open up the prongs at the back of the CS.
  5. Center and mat your Real Red CS to a 5 1/5″ x 5 1/4″ textured Tempting Turquoise card front using Snail adhesive (created by folding a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of tempting turqoise CS in half with a bone folder).
  6. Take a 1 ” x 5″ strip of Whisper White CS.  Stamp your greeting in Basic Black ink using the Just Perfect Alphabet.  Sponge the edges of the Whisper White CS piece with Green Galore ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
  7. Stick the greeting to the card front on an angle using Stampin’ Dimensionals – position your Stampin’ Dimensionals so that they are between rather than on, the letters.
  8. Take a Real Red and Tempting Turquoise button from the Playground Designer Buttons collection and create faux thread for each using slivers of matching CS. Stick the buttons to the greeting strip with mini glue dots.  You’re done!

*Note: you may notice I use a lot of textured CS and 12″ x 12″ when I make square cards.  It just happens that I keep a lot of that type of paper on hand and have lots of scraps to work with.  For the supply list I listed the numbers of regular 8 1/2″ x 11″ CS as that is all you really need to make this card.

Hi Andrea, thank you so much for doing this! As a fairly new demo still, I really struggle with all the assumptions that “everybody knows how to do this simple card, technique, fold, etc…” I would search and search and all my time was spent trying to find out HOW to do something that everyone thinks every knows already! This is great-keep up the work!

I am so glad I scrolled down to find this post! Wow, Sophie, it’s fabulous! You don’t know how long I’ve been searching for sushi stamps and now I can do it with punches! You are amazingly talented!!!

I love your Halloween story. I have made my kids’ halloween costumes before and didn’t have as many troubles as you did. Last year my son was a fisherman. I made his pants too big and the hat too small. He wore the pants and not the hat. The lures that were supposed to be on the hat went on the vest. He was the cutest trick or treater out there.

I love this card. I really need to get me some of that Halloween DSP. I like how you used black for the card base. You don’t see that much. I LOVE the orange buttons. Thanks for sharing!

Wow – love this scrapbook page! Thank you for the inspiration, I have been into making cards and neglecting my scrapbook pages. This is the boost I needed to get back at those pages and preserving memories. You have got me thinking I should scrapbook my Gram on this page. Thanks so much for sharing!

Melon Mambo Thanks & some Secret Comment Patrol Winners!

Posted: Monday, July 6th, 2009 | Comments (65)

MelonMamboThanks

Over the last few posts I’ve slowly been working my way through the In Colors looking for combinations that tone them down a bit. Today’s In Color combination is one that I think is slowly becoming my favorite – Melon Mambo and Pretty in Pink.  It’s funny because with Stampin’ Up!’s last In Colors, once Pink Pirouette was released I almost never touched Pretty in Pink.  I just loved the paleness of the Pink Pirouette, especially in comparison to Pretty in Pink.  Now that Stampin’ Up!’s new In Colors have been released I find that by pairing Melon Mambo – a bright and intense color – with Pretty in Pink, it makes the Pretty in Pink seem paler than it really is.

Today’s card is a very simple one which was designed based on the DP.  I had to laugh when I read the comment below that was left on my last post.  I really do use a lot of DP on my cards beause I love the extra interest that they add to the design. So Elissa, I’m back to DP today *lol* and YOU are going to be one of my lucky Secret Comment Patrol winners – so read on to the end of the post to see what you and the others listed at the end of this post won.

Andrea, I’m amazed that you made a card without Designer Series Paper! But this one is beautiful–great job with the color combo

Here’s how I made my card:

  1. Take a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of Kraft CS and fold it in half using a bone folder.  Set aside for a moment.
  2. You will now need a 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ piece of Melon Mambo DP from the Razzleberry Lemonade Collection. Lay a 5 1/2″ piece of Pretty in Pink taffeta ribbon across the bottom of the DP about 1″ up from the bottom of the DP – bring the ends around back and stick them down with Snail adhesive.
  3.  Mat the DP onto a 3 3/8″ x 4 5/8″ piece of Pretty in Pink CS. Take a 4″ piece of Pretty in Pink ribbon and tie it in a half knot (left over right and pull really tight) around the first piece of ribbon. Position the knot towards the right side of the DP.
  4. Use the Big Shot and Stampin’ Up! Billboard Sizzlet Decorative Strip die and die cut the word “thanks” out of Basic Black CS.  Stick the greeting to the DP just above the knot of ribbon with 2-way glue.
  5. Use the Big Shot and Flower, Daisies #2 die and die cut out a medium daisy from Pretty in Pink CS and a small daisy from Melon Mambo CS.  Stick the small flower onto the medium flower with 2-way glue.  Center and stick a Stampin’ Dimensionals to the back of the medium daisy.  Stick the daisy onto the card so that it overlaps the ribbon.
  6. Punch out the smallest flower from the Boho Blossoms punch in Pretty and Pink CS.  Stick it onto the portion of the Stampin’ Dimensional that shows through the center of the flowers.
  7. Lay the Melon Mambo DP piece onto a foam mat.  Stick the Daisy flowers onto the DP piece so that the flower overlaps the ribbon.  Pierce a hole through the center of the flowers with a paper-piercing tool.  Insert a large clear rhinestone brad.
  8. Pierce two holes, one on top of the other in the top left corner of the DP piece – insert two black brads from the Vintage brads collection.
  9. Mat the Pretty in Pink/Melon Mambo DP piece onto the Kraft card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

Fun and Fast Notes Baby Card & some Secret Comment Patrol Winners

Posted: Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 | Comments (59)

babycarriage

Today I thought I’d share a simple baby card with you. I don’t actually have anyone that I need a baby card for at the moment but I saw a very similar card layout to this one in my most recent issue of Scrapbooks Etc. magazine and wanted to try it out. Unlike some of the cards I’ve posted recently where the idea started with the embellishments, in this case the starting point of my card was the layout.

After I had the layout idea, I then started looking through my Inspiration Book for patterns of designer paper (DP) that might “fit” the idea.  The Tea Party DP collection immediately jumped out at me because the colors are all in shades of pastels and it has so many soft, subtle patterns – perfect for baby cards.

After I had settled on my DP, I then started digging through my stamp sets to see what I had that was for babies. It turns out, I have very little (guess that means I *NEED* to buy more *lol*) – the only current sent I have is the Nursery Necessities stamp set, which didn’t have the “look” I was going for.  I was just about to give up on the whole baby card idea when I found my Fun & Fast Notes stamp set.

Now Fun & Fast Notes is a perfect “starter” stamp set because it has a variety of different images and greetings suited to a bunch of different occasions.  In fact when it first came out a few years ago, it was at the top of my list and one of the first things I purchased.  As my stamp collection grew though, it kind of fell by the wayside.  In fact I think the last time I used it was 2 years ago for a Fun & Fast Notes class.  When I pulled it out, it was kind of like greeting an old friend *grin* AND it was just perfect for this card layout.

Here’s how I made my card:

  1. Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Pretty in Pink CS and fold it in half using your bone folder.  This will be your card base.  Set aside for a moment.
  2. Cut a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Whisper White CS and emboss it using the Big Shot and the small polka dot texturz plate from the Stampin’ Up! Backgrounds 1 collection.
  3. Cut a 1″ x 4 3/4″ piece of striped DP and a 2″ x 5″ piece of pink DP.  Center and layer the striped DP over top of the pink DP – you only want to them to overlap a bit. Stamp a greeting (I used the greeting from Nursery Necessities) underneath the striped DP, towards the left, in Basic Black ink.  Center and mount the DP along the bottom of the Whisper White CS piece.
  4. Pierce two holes along the left edge of the striped DP and insert two Pretty in Pink brads from the Soft Subtles collection. Center and mount the Whisper White CS piece to the Pretty in Pink card front.
  5. Stamp the baby carriage from Fun and Fast Notes onto a scrap of Whisper White CS.  Punch it out using the 1 3/4″ circle punch.  Color it in using a blender pen and Pink Pirouette and Pretty in Pink Classic ink.  Place small dabs of Crystal Effects onto the polka dots on the baby carriage and sprinkle on some Dazzling Diamonds glitter.  Let dry.
  6. Use your Big Shot and the Stampin’ Up! Pennant die to die cut a scalloped circle out of Pretty in Pink CS.
  7. Pierce a hole in the center of each scallop with a paper piercer and foam mat.
  8. Mat the image onto the scalloped circle using two Stampin’ Dimensionals and then mat the scalloped circle onto your card front using two Stampin’ Dimensionals. You’re done!

Okay, and now onto my “Secret Comment Patrol” winners. For those of you that may be new to my blog I’ll take a minute to explain what the “Secret Comment Patrol” is.  Basically it is my way of saying thank you to all of you that not only take the time to visit my blog – but who take the few extra minutes to leave me a comment.  I absolutely LOVE reading all your comments, and through your comments getting to know you better.  Every so often (usually about once a week or every week and half) I draw names from those that have left comments – if your name is drawn then you are a “Secret Comment Patrol” Winner and you get to choose any one of my stamp or scrapbook classes by email OR my class planner versions for Stampin’ Up! I am planning on having a workshop in June, but my customers seem to like to attend workshops at my house. I’ve only had one customer host a workshop and now she is my downline and hosting her own workshops (which are even more fun for me because I don’t have to plan them)! Anyway workshops are a great time to get together and have fun with all the ladies in my life.
