A Card “For You”

Posted: Monday, February 1st, 2010 | Comments (30)

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Today I want to share with you a card that although in Valentine’s colors, is not intended for Valentine’s.  I find that with every season, I tend to stick to the colors of that season in my paper crafting. Hence the pink and brown LOL.

You can download a pdf handout on how to make the card HERE.  The pdf includes a photo, full supply list, dimensions and step-by-step directions.

The video on how this card was made is below:

Directions:

  1. Take a 4 ¼” x 11” piece of Chocolate Chip CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card.
  2. Take a 3 ¾” x 5” piece of Whisper White CS and dry emboss it using the Big Shot and the Perfect Polka Dots textured impressions folder.  Center and stick the Whisper White CS piece to your card front using Snail adhesive.  Set aside for a moment.
  3. Take a 1 ⅜” x 4 ¼” piece of Pretty in Pink CS and scallop the edge using the Scallop Trim Border punch.  Center and stick a 1” x 4 ¼” piece of DP from the Sending Love DP collection onto the Pretty in Pink CS border.
  4. Stick the matted DP border to your card about a ½” up from the bottom edge of the card.
  5. Cut a 3 ⅞” piece of ⅝” Chocolate Chip Grosgrain ribbon.  Trim one end on an angle.  Place Snail adhesive on the back of the ribbon piece, on both ends.  Stick the ribbon to the card front – you want the straight edge of the ribbon to be aligned with the right edge of the card front.  The bottom of the ribbon should be about ¼” down from the top edge of the Pretty in Pink CS strip.
  6. Stamp the label from the Great Friend stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Chocolate Chip Classic ink. Stamp the “for you” greeting inside the label also using Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Use a Stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary.  Cut out the label using your paper snips, being sure to leave a very small border of white around it.
  7. Die cut a matching label out of Chocolate Chip CS using your Big Shot and the Stampin’ Up! Matchbox die.  Set aside for a moment.
  8. Pierce a hole in the top and bottom of the greeting label and insert a small clear rhinestone brad into each hole.  Open up the prongs at the back.
  9. Center and stick the greeting label to the die cut Chocolate Chip label using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Stick the matted label to the card front (towards the right edge of the card, slightly overlapping the ribbon) with Snail adhesive.
  10. Stick the flower and the leaves shown from the Sweet Pea stitched felt collection to the left of the label (as shown in the picture) using mini glue dots.
  11. Die cut a butterfly out of Pretty in Pink CS using your Big Shot and the embosslit Beautiful Wings.  Stick the butterfly to the label (just to the right of the rhinestone brad) with a mini glue dot.  You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed today’s project!

Band aid Punch Tutorial

Bandaidtutorial 004

Wow, does the week ever fly by!  My husband was visiting us for the weekend and we had a wonderful time.  He came in the nick of time to save me from dealing with the 2 mice that I had caught.  Ugg… is all I can say.   We also had the opportunity to go out on a date Saturday night.  I was kind of staggered when I had realized that we have not gone on a date in over a year and a half!  Well that was definitely the best part of the weekend.  There were no kids with us at all, and we could actually eat hot food, and converse without being interupted a gagillion times (according to my daughter that is a legitimate number).  Ok, well this weeks project is really super easy, but rather fun if I do say so myself.  I copied the idea of a heart on the bandage from a Cornish Heritage stamp that I saw and realized how easy it would be to make it into  a punch project.  The fun thing with this project is that it is great for the coming cold and flu season, and it is really fast to do.  The tin only took me 10 minutes from start to finish.  Now in case you do not catch it in the video, this tin is great to fill with lozengers, but it is also great for kids when filled with a mint or simple candy (my daughter loves Altoids).  Now I don’t know about your kids, but mine always want “medicine” whenever they are not feeling well, or hurt themselves.  So this tin filled with candy becomes the magic pill box.  It cures all wounds, sicknesses and heartaches.  Dosage is determined by parent for a “to be determined” length of time.  You could even use your die cut letters to come up with your own patented Wonder Pill name :)

Hugs,

Penny For Your Thoughts

ETA: Yes, I looked at the card in the photo and realized that I forgot to put in the H.  It was cut, I was just so frazzled that somehow I forgot it.  So no need to mention…………….I know, pretty embarassing!

Well, this weeks punch tutorial annoyed the heck out of me.  I like how the penny turned out, but could not seem to get it into a card that I liked.  I will be trying a few other combinations, but for the meantime you can look at this card.  Now unfortunately I won’t be doing a video this week, my kids are all sick, as am I and I have no voice worth listening to.  I figured rather then subjecting you to my hoarse croak, I would just do a picture tutorial, and then replace it with a video when my voice is better.  Ok, so the idea behind this tutorial is the expression: “A Penny for your thoughts”.  I love that expression, and rather then gluing on a real penny I decided to make one out of paper which could be larger than the real thing.  The penny is popped up on Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Now I would have preferred to have the whole contents shifted upwards a bit, but when I started gluing I had intended to have an A at the top, and discovered that it looked like a Dunce cap.  I removed the A but was stuck with it to low.  Oh well.  As a side not, you can also make this coin in yellow CS to imitate gold coins.

Download JPEG Penny Silhouette Here
Download and save on your computer.  To print, open file in a word document and print on to cheap printer CS.  Size should not be altered for 1 3/4″ circle, but can be altered for smaller coins.

 Tutorial:

Print out your silhouette template on to some cheap Cardstock.  Trace the image on to your Creamy Caramel CS and then cut out.  Punch out a circle with your 1 3/4″ circle punch.

 october workshop 026
Take your pieces and sponge with Creamy Caramel Classic ink.  Be generous and go reasonably far in towards the center.

october workshop 027
Now take your Sponge Dauber and sponge around the pieces with Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Keep it closer to the edges, and add a little extra to the hair lines.

october workshop 028
With your White Gel pen, add some lines along the edges of the penny.  This will be the highlighted ridge that runs around.  Next with your Chocolate Chip marker, take the writing end and add small dots all the way around.  I simply pulled out features from a real penny to mimick the same look.

october workshop 029
Now glue the silhouette to the penny backing.  Add some highlights with your gel pen and some lowlights with your Chocolate Chip marker.  You are done!

Just Because I Care

JustbecauseIcare

It’s so funny to me sometimes how cards end up coming together.  I saw a card in a Papercrafts magazine (not the most recent issue, but the one before that) that had flowers that had been either punched or die cut (not sure which) from a newsprint-type paper, and each flower had a button in the middle.  I thought it would be fun to try and do something similar especially because Stampin’ Up! now has a newsprint-type pattern as part of their new Night & Day Specialty Designer Paper collection. I had planned on using the Bashful Blue, Pretty in Pink and Certainly Celery buttons from the Sherbet Designer Button collection and creating a nice soft card.  Somehow though, as the card came together I found that it looked too washed-out.  As I played around with different color combos this is what emerged – totally opposite from the look I had initially been going for *lol*.

Here’s how I made my card:

  1. Cut a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Basic Black CS and fold it in half with your bone folder.  Set it aside for a moment.
  2. Cut a 5 1/8″ x 4 3/8″ piece of Pumpkin Pie DP and scallop the bottom edge with the Scallop Edge punch.  Pierce a hole in the center of each scallop using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat.
  3. Stamp your greeting in the bottom right corner of the Pumpkin Pie DP with Basic Black ink.  I used a greeting from Best Yet – a retired level 1 hostess set (and my favorite greeting set by far).
  4. Take a 7″ piece of striped Pumpkin Pie grosgrain ribbon and lay it across the top of the Pumpkin Pie DP about 1/4″ down from the top edge.  Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the DP and stick them down using Snail adhesive.
  5. Mat the Pumpkin Pie CS piece onto your Basic Black card.  Take a 4 1/2″ piece of the ribbon and tie it in a knot around the first piece.  Slide the knot so that it is towards the left side of the card.
  6. Die cut a swirl out of Basic Black CS using the Swirly Sizzlit Decorative Strip die and your Big Shot.  Position the swirl on your Pumpkin Pie CS on an angle and stick down with 2-way glue.
  7. Punch a flower out of the newsprint-type pattern of DP from the Night and Day Specialty DP collection using the 5-petal flower punch.  Die cut two more flowers out of the same DP with your Big Shot – I used the Stampin’ Up! Birds & Blooms Sizzlit 4-pack die for one flower and the Birds with Leaves and Flower die for the other flower.
  8. Use the Boho Blossoms flower punch to punch out the two smaller flowers out of Basic Black CS.  Center the 2 smaller flowers on two of the newsprint flowers using 2-way glue.
  9. Pierce a hole in the center of the two flowers onto which you glued the small black flowers.  Insert a small Pumpkin Pie corduroy brad into the center of one and a large orange rhinestone brad into the center of the other.  Take a small orange button from the Sherbet Designer Button collection, create the look of “faux” thread with a sliver of Basic Black CS and then stick it to the center of the third flower with a mini glue dot.
  10. Position and stick the flowers to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals. You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed this card.

Get Fresh with Sushi!

Posted: Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 | Comments (46)

sushi 008

Well I am so sorry for posting this late in the day!!  This was my daughters first day back to school, and the whole day just got away from me!  It has definitely been one of those non stop days, so this will have to be a fast post as I need to get to bed (no more sleeping in).  Today’s punch tutorial is sushi and chopsticks with a dash of wasabi on the side.    It was super easy to make and super fun.  The topings are one of those things that you can add anything you want.  Now hopefully no one will get offended by my caption/greeting.  It is meant to eventually go to my husband who loves sushi among other things.  Oh and just to let your know my inspiration was from a die that featured Japanese Cultural themes.

Tutorial:

sushi 002
Start by punching out one Wide Oval Punch from Basic Black CS, one Small Oval Punch from Whisper White CS, and some 1/8″ circles (or the smallest you have) out of Ruby Red CS.

sushi 004
The Basic Black Wide Oval had the tips removed using the 1 3/8″ Square Punch.

sushi 006
Before punching the Ruby Red circles, I sponged the CS with a touch of Real Red.  The Small Oval was sponged with a touch of Creamy Caramel and then run through the Big Shot with the mini dots from the Stampin’Up Backgrounds 1 embossing plates.  The Black was sponged with a touch of Whisper White Craft ink using a Sponge Dauber.  I do not recommend using any other type of sponge tool because you need control when working with small pieces.  If you notice the sponging on the Black piece, you will see that the Whisper White craft ink is kept light and only blended in to the Right hand side bottom and top.  The texture plate that you run the Small Oval through will simulate the texture of the rice.

sushi 007
Here it shows the pieces glued together.  The red circles were glazed (after gluing) with Crystal Effects.  The Summer Sun mini rectangles were sponged with Creamy Caramel and a touch of Real Red.  Dazzling Diamonds was added to the yellow sushi.  The red circles represent the salmon roe that you often find on Sushi, the Little yellow piece are some obscure vegetable.

To put the whole card together, you will need to punch Trio Flower Punch flowers out of Kiwi Kiss (or Old Olive) CS and sponge with Old Olive ink.  These will be glued in an overlapping fashion to create the Wasabi.  The Chopsticks were made by cutting Close to Cocoa CS at an angle and then sponging with Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  A small bit of shading was traced around the Sushi using my Blender pen and a bit of Basic Grey Classic ink.  The shading was kept very light.  Hope you enjoy.

Hugs,
