Greenhouse Gala “For You” Card – Another Ashley Cannon Newell Make-Over!

Posted: Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 | Comments (24)

The card I want to share with you today is a make-over based on THIS CARD which was created by Ashley Cannon Newell.  You guys have heard me mention Ashely before – her blog is one of my favorites to visit - I typically stop by several times a week.  I absolutely love her style and always get tons of ideas for projects.

Make-overs have always been one of my favorite things to do because it stretches my creativity and makes me look at my supplies in a whole new way. I also always get lots of neat card sketch ideas.

Here’s how I made today’s card:

  1. Take a 4″ x 5 3/8″ piece of Pear Pizzaz CS and dry emboss it using your Big Shot and the Square Lattice embossing folder.  The dry embossing will cause it to shrink so that you end up with a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece.  Double check that measurement and trim it to that size if necessary (in case for whatever reason yours doesn’t shrink as much as mine did).
  2. Cut a 1″ x 5 1/4″ strip of Greenhouse Gala DP in the Daffodil Damask pattern. Stick it to the textured Pear Pizzaz piece about 1″ in from the left edge of the CS, using SNAIL adhesive.
  3. Cut a 3″ x 4 1/2″ piece of the Greenhouse Gala DP with the large yellow flowers. Center and stick it to the Pear Pizzaz CS with Snail adhesive.
  4. Take a 42″ piece of linen thread and wrap it around the Pear Pizzaz CS three times.  Make sure it is positioned over the 1″ DP strip.  Start with about 5″ piece positioned 1 1/2″ below the top edge of the Pear Pizzaz CS.  Hold it in place with your left hand as you wrap the thread down and around the CS.  Continue wrapping the linen thread around the CS three times.  Tie the ends of the linen thread in a knot, being sure to keep the thread taut.
  5. Die cut the tag from the Table Setting Bigz XL die out of Pear Pizzaz CS.
  6. Stamp the “for you” greeting along the bottom of the tag in Basic Black Classic ink.  Use a Stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary.
  7. Use your Pumpkin Pie and Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Write markers to color the small flower image from the Friends Never Fade stamp set and stamp it onto a scrap of Whisper White CS.  Color and stamp a second flower.  Cut out the first flower completely and only the petals of the second flower.
  8. Layer the petals of the second flower on top of the first flower with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  9. Stick 6 small orange peel and stick rhinestones in the center of the flower.
  10. Die cut a swirl out of Pear Pizzaz CS using the Swirls Scribbles die and your Big Shot.  Sponge them with Old Olive Classic ink and wedge of stamping sponge.
  11. Cut the main swirl apart and then stick the various pieces to the back of the flower with Snail adhesive.
  12. Stick the flower to the tag, just above the greeting with mini glue dots.
  13. Slide the ends of the linen thread up through the hole of the tag and tie the ends of the linen thread in a bow.  Trim the ends if necesasary.
  14. Stick the tag to the DP with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  15. Center and stick the embossed & decorated Pear Pizzaz textured CS to a Whisper White card (created out of folding a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Whisper White CS in half).  You’re done!

Well I hope you enjoyed today’s card.  I’m on my way out to meet my second-level upline for lunch so I’ll be back later to add in the supply list at the bottom of this post.

Thursday Trend Watch: Using twine

Posted: Thursday, May 13th, 2010 | Comments (27)

Welcome to Thursday Trend Watch. The trend we are looking at today is using twine (i.e. things like linen thread or hemp twine) to your projects.  If you check out magazines and websites you’ll see it being used over and over again.

I must confess, it’s a good thing it’s not a stretch for me to use twine, and that I already had a pretty good idea of what I was planning to make for today’s post, because until 4:30 pm this afternoon (EST) I had actually forgotten all about my post!  This morning I was helping out at the kid’s school (I’m class librarian for the Gr. 3 and Gr. 6 class) and then when I got home, I started browsing the web for info on Apple’s new ipad.  Now I have to tell you, ever since it was first made public I’ve been drooling over it.  This afternoon, over a quick cup of tea, I decided to do some research on it.  Well my quick cup of tea lasted 3 hours which culminated in me taking the plunge and buying the ipad!  I am so excited for it to arrive.

Anyways, what does this have to do with today’s post?  Well, I was shopping when I should have been stamping.  As a result I had to rush through my card which is why I ended up grabbing some foam sticker letters from my stash rather than die cutting them out of White Fun Foam with my Big Shot and Timeless Type Junior alphabet die.  Yup!   I took a short cut *LOL*.  Now looking at the card, I can see that the “S” is a bit off kilter – I did go back and fix that, but don’t have the time to take and edit another picture, as my husband is headed out to a school board meeting and I’m on my own with the kids tonight.

Happy Friday everyone!  Today I wanted to share with you a card I made for the Embellish Magazine Color Challenge.  I stumbled upon Embellish Magazine one day when I was blog hopping, and immediately fell in love.  Remember last Thursday when I was talking about ways to keep up on trends?  Well I’ve added the Embellish Magazine to my arsenal.

You can read all about the details of this challenge HERE. As part of the challenge you had to use the colors shown in the Polaroid swatches, and you had to incorporate some form of embossing whether heat embossing or dry embossing.

When I created my card I decided to kill two birds with one stone.  I decided to make a card for my youngest son’s birthday (he’ll be turning two in July), while following along with the challenge.  I did use all four colors for my card, but also added in orange. As the challenge didn’t say anything about not adding in extra colors I figured it should be okay. The other thing is that it also didn’t say anything about using the exact same shades they did, so hopefully that’s okay too.  For the embossing, I dry embossed the card front with the Polka Dot Textured Impressions folder and I used heat embossing with craft ink, heat & stick powder, and aqua glitter on the chipboard number.

You can download a pdf handout for this card HERE.  The handout gives you a full supply list, dimensions and written directions on how this card was made.

Well I hope you enjoyed today’s card.  And now, as promised, I’m announcing some Secret Comment Patrol winners.  If you’re new to my blog you may be wondering what the Secret Comment Patrol is.  It’s our way of saying thank you to those of you that not only stop by the blog for a visit, but take the time to leave a comment.  On the last Friday of the month we are going to pick 2 names from those that have left comments the preceding month. If your name is picked you get to pick a digital product of your choice from the Sunny Stampin’ Store.  What that means is that the more often you comment the more likely you are to win.  Soph and I read each and every comment, so when we see the same name in the comment section of each post, you can bet you’ll be seeing that name announced as a winner.

Drumroll please……..and the winners are:

Happy Birthday to a Great Friend

Posted: Monday, April 12th, 2010 | Comments (18)

Hi everyone!  Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  Today I wanted to share with you a simple card that was partially inspired by the Paper Crafts Go-to-Sketch #2 in the May/June issue.  I saw a card with a butterfly positioned similar to mine, with the butterfly’s flight path marked out by silver brads.  I though that was really neat and incorporated that into my card, however, instead of silver brads I used some peel and stick rhinestones which I picked up at the dollar store.

You can download the handout for the card here.  This handout contains full supply list and step-by-step directions including dimensions for making the card.

Also, we were supposed to announce the winners of the Totally Tool Workshop Planner on Friday and weren’t able to, so here they are now.  If you are one of the lucky winners please email me at andrea@sunnystampin.com and put Totally Tool Workshop Planner winner in the subject line.  Please note that if you already purchased this planner then you can substitute for another workshop planner.  Substitutions with other product types (such as class planners) are not allowed.

You are absolutely right when you say that it is easier to create feminin themed cards than male themed cards! I have lots of brother in laws and this would be a life saver. As always, you do wonderful work…..you are a true inspiration!

Papercrafts Magazine Go-To Sketch

Posted: Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 | Comments (22)

Please don’t forget to click Here  to sign up for your chance to win a free registration to our March Madness Online Class.

Today’s card was totally inspired by the March/April 2010 Papercrafts magazine go-to sketch #1 which was created by Teri Anderson (LOVE her stuff!).

You can download a pdf handout on how this card was made. The pdf include supply list, dimensions and written directions. You can watch a video of how this card was made below:

Directions:

  1. Take a 4 ¼” x 11” piece of Barely Banana CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card.
  2. Die cut the larger scalloped circle from the Scallop Circle #2 die in Chocolate Chip CS using your Big Shot (the diameter of the circle is about 3 ½”).
  3. Pierce a hole in the center of each scallop using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat.
Cut a 3 ¼” diameter circle out of Whisper White CS using a circle cutting system (I used the Coluzzle).
  4. Stamp your greeting onto the Whisper White CS circle in Chocolate Chip classic ink.  Use a stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary. Center and stick the Whisper White CS circle onto the Chocolate Chip scalloped circle.
  5. Stick the scalloped circle onto a 4” x 5 ¼” piece of textured Pretty in Pink CS (center it between the left and right edge and about ¼” down from the top edge).
  6. Take a 3” high x 3 ¾ wide” piece of Sending Love DP.  Trim it on an angle so that the right side of the DP remains at 3” high while the left edge of the DP is about 2 ½” high.
  7. Center and stick the DP along the bottom of the Pretty in Pink CS piece with Snail adhesive.
Lay a 6” piece of Chocolate Chip Satin ribbon along the top angled edge of the DP.  Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the CS and stick them down using Snail adhesive.
  8. Center and stick the Pretty in Pink CS piece to the Barely Banana card front using Snail adhesive.
Stick the Sweet Pea stitched felt flower, leaves and bud to the bottom right corner of the circle, on the Chocolate Chip Satin ribbon.  You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project!
