Bee Mine

Posted: Thursday, February 4th, 2010 | Comments (26)

This has not been my best week at all!  My daughter came down with a Gastro-Intenstinal bug, which means keeping her quarantined to her room, doing tons of steralizing and lots of extra clean-up from her being sick.  Thankfully it seems to be paying off since the younger two have managed to avoid getting it.  Needless to say I have not had a ton of free time.

Anyways, for this project, I decided that I wanted to create something really cute and fun to give my daughter for Valentine’s day.  This bee was the perfect solution.  He expresses my sentiment nicely, and he is so bold and bright to cheer my girl up!  I am also thinking that he could be used for other projects, such as a get well ( Bee Better), or a ( Just Bee-Cause) or how about a simple cheer up ( Bee Happy).  So many fun applications!  Well I hope you enjoyed today’s projects and that you will visit us again tomorrow when Andrea posts another fabulous creation :)

Potty Punch Project

Posted: Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 | Comments (37)

Well today’s post was made out of necessity!  I wanted to create an incentive for my son whom I am potty training.  He has proven very challenging compared to my daughter who trained easily.  I know that he can do it because he has requested to go before and succeeded, but unfortunately, since my husband has been gone alot, it seems to really have affected him.  He is more clingy, and more reluctant to be a “big” boy.  So I created a fun chart and potty treat jar.  The idea is that he puts down a star every time he does something on the toilet. On the fifth time (represented by the orange dot) he gets a little extra for a treat.  The stars are put down with 2-way glue pen which was allowed to air dry so that it was tacky and removable.  I figure that once the chart fills up, we can remove the stars and start over again. The toilet idea was taken from a Quickutz toilet die.  I always find it handy to check out other companies to see how they do things, and then to go on my own and create it with what I have.  I hope some of you can have fun with this one.  One alternate idea would be to give a toilet on a card and make mention of a bad day, or use some other potty related humour to amuse your boys.

Well I must run, but I look forward to posting my next card on Friday.

Valentine’s Top Note Die Treat Topper

Posted: Monday, January 18th, 2010 | Comments (40)

What a day I had today!  Our “A Touch of Romance” online Valentine’s class officially kicked off today.  We’re absolutely thrilled with the fantastic response we’re getting.  We’ve had lots of involvement in the forums, some great project pictures being uploaded, and we’re generally having a good time getting to know one another.  If you still haven’t signed up for the online class it’s not too late.  You can do so from HERE.  We’re actually keeping registration open all week since it’s set up in such a way that you can come in and catch up on the projects and discussions at any time.

So that was the good part of today.  The bad part happened while I was filming today’s video.  I was right in the middle of heat embossing the stamped heart background paper when all of a sudden I heard a beep and my studio went black.  Yup! I overloaded a circuit because I had my lights that I use for illuminating my filming area plugged into the same extension cord as my heat tool.  I guess it couldn’t take it LOL  Of course my hubbie was not home, and I don’t know the first thing about electrical, so I was pretty panicked.  I went to our electrical panel with my flashlight (because the panel is behind a hidden door in my studio) and tried to figure out which circuit blew.  Well it looked to me like they were all fine.  I tried every single switch…and nothing.  Finally, as I was on the phone with an emergency electrical service, I realized that I actually had a second box underneath the main box – the second box had been installed when we finished the basement.  Sure enough that’s where the problem was and I got it all fixed.  So that was my adventure for today!

You can download a PDF handout of today’s project HERE.  The pdf includes a picture, full supply list and step-by-step directions.  We’ve put it in this format to make it easier for you to print the directions off and save them in your inspiration binder!

You can watch a video of how this was made, including a video on making your own glittery DP (what I die cut the Top Note out of):

I’m also going to continue including the directions below in case for some reason you can’t download the handout or you want to quickly scan through the instructions.

Directions:

  1. Take a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” piece of Whisper White CS and randomly stamp the trio heart image from the I {Heart} Hearts stamp set all over it in Real Red Craft ink. Sprinkle on Iridescent Ice embossing powder, tap off the excess and then heat with your heat tool.
  2. Die cut your Whisper White CS piece with your Big Shot and Top Note Die.  Fold your Top Note die in half and set aside.
  3. Die cut a scalloped circle out of Real Red CS using your Big Shot and Stampin’ Up!’s Pennant die. Set aside.
  4. Stamp your greeting onto a scrap of Whisper White CS.  Punch it out using the 1 ¾” circle punch, and then sponge the edges with Real Red Classic ink.
  5. Take two red buttons from the Designer Button Playground collection and “thread” them using a sliver of Real Red CS.  Stick them to the bottom of the Whisper White Circle (underneath the greeting) using a mini glue dot for each.
  6. Center and stick the Whisper White greeting circle to the Real Red scalloped circle using 3 Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  7. Place your candy inside your small flat cello bag.  Fold the top over about ¼” and staple the top shut.
  8. Stick your cello bag to the inside back of the Top Note die with Sticky Strip.
  9. Fold the Top Note closed and hold it shut by tying a 14” piece of Real Red Satin Ribbon around it in a knot.
  10. Stick the Real Red Scalloped Circle to the Top Note Topper with Stampin’ Dimensionals – make sure to allow the top of the scalloped circle to extend above the Top Note Topper about a ½”.  You’re done!

Well I hope you enjoyed today’s project!

ETA:  I’ve had a few people ask me where I got the candy from – I bought them at a store called Bulk Barn.  It’s a chain of bulk food stores.

Valentine’s Glassine Bag Treat Holder

Posted: Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 | Comments (35)

I was so excited when I saw that Stampin’ Up! is carrying Glassine bags in their Occasions Mini Catalogue!  There are so many neat things you can do with them.  Over the coming weeks you’ll probably see me share a variety of different ways they can be used.  One of the projects in our Online Valentine’s Class is actually a mini scrapbook using the glassine bags.  In today’s project I show you how to emboss the glassine bags using the Big Shot & the Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impressions folder.  I also show you how to apply rub-ons to chipboard and curl designer paper so that it looks like ribbon. You can see a close-up of the decorative accent I created for my glassine bag below.

If you’ve never embossed a surface that is LARGER than the size of the embossing folder, I suggest you watch the video for some tips on how to do it.  I had to divide the video into two segments because You Tube only allows a maximum of 10 minutes per video and this project took me just over 15 minutes from start to finish.

In Part 1 of the video you’ll see how I created the embellishment.  The video features three different techniques: coloring chipboard with craft ink, applying rub-ons to colored chipboard and creating the curled paper ribbon.

In Part 2 of the video you’ll see how I dry embossed the glassine bag using the Big Shot & an embossing folder, as well as how the final project was assembled.

You can downlaod a pdf of the handout HERE.  The pdf includes a photo of the project, full supply list, dimensions and written step-by-step directions.  There is also a link to this post so that you can come back and view the video if necessary.

I have also included the written directions in this post so that you don’t HAVE to download the handout if you don’t want to.  Plus I’ve heard from some Mac users that they aren’t always able to download the pdf.

Directions:

  1. Take a 4 ¾” x 6 ¾” Glassine bag and emboss it using your Big Shot & the Perfect Polka dots embossing folder.  You’ll need to run it through in 2 different sections as the bag is too large to fit inside.  Please refer to the video to see exactly how it was done. The “sandwich” used was the multipurpose platform open to the innermost panel, a cutting pad, the embossing folder with the glassine bag inside, and finally the standard premium crease pad.
  2. If you are filling your bag with baked goods then you may want to place them inside a medium cello bag so that they do not stain the glassine bag.  Place your cello bag inside the glassine bag, and fold the top over (I did not secure it closed although you could do so if you desire).
  3. Wrap a 15 ½” piece of Real Red Double Stitched Grosgrain ribbon around the treat bag and then overlap and stick one end of the ribbon to the other end with Snail adhesive.
  4. You will now need two chipboard hearts in a larger and smaller size.  I used the hearts from a retired Stampin’ Up! chipboard collection – you could use the On Board Essentials Chipboard collection, or use the Hearts & Brackets Original die (item #115955).
  5. Ink up the larger heart in Real Red Craft ink and the smaller heart in Pretty in Pink craft ink.  Let air dry, or to speed up the drying process you could use a heat tool.
  6. If desired, add a rub-on greeting to the Pretty in Pink Heart and then stick the Pretty in Pink heart to the Real Red heart using Crystal Effects.
  7. Punch a hole through the Real Red heart with a handheld 1/16” circle punch and insert a Real Red epoxy brad.
  8. Place a small line of Crystal Effects all around the outer edge of the Real Red heart and then sprinkle on some white Chunky Essentials glitter.  Let dry.
  9. Cut some ¼” wide strips of Sending Love DP (in whatever pattern and length you desire – make sure they are least 6” long).  Wrap them around the handle of a small paintbrush or a pencil to curl.  Stick them to the back of the Real Red chipboard heart with mini glue dots.
  10. Stick the Real Red Chipboard heart to the Real Red Double Stitched Grosgrain ribbon with a pop up glue dot.  You’re done!

Turtle Card

Posted: Monday, January 11th, 2010 | Comments (25)

Phew, it’s up!  You would not believe how hard I find it to make short Videos.  That is probably why I rarely do a whole card on a video for our daily posts!  I can never keep it within the 10 minute time limit that You Tube gives us, and then find myself fumbling near the end as I see my time coming to an end.  So for my rushed ending I appologize.  I am so glad that with our classes we don’t have to worry about that time limit!  Well other than the hardship of trying to cut down my chatter, my day was pretty good.  I have been having a lot of fun coming up with cute lunches for the kids.  I’ve been playing around with Bento lunches, and wow, there is some really neat things that you can do.  One of these days I am going to take a picture to show you because I am so impressed with this :)    Anyways, today’s card was made using a whole bunch of products from the New Occasions Mini Catalogue.  I don’t know if you can tell, but I am so in love with this catalogue!  It is fun, cute and oh so versatile.  Well  I hope you all are having a wonderful day and I can’t wait to share with you my next card which will be another Punch Project.
