Birthday Card featuring the Sweet & Sour Specialty DP
Posted: Monday, July 26th, 2010 | CommentsI hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I had actually meant to post a card for you Friday since I actually did have one made, but time just got away from me. This week Soph and I (and our families) are visiting our parents. While it’s good to be “home” and wonderful to see our parents, going away is always a challenge. There’s just so much packing and preparation, not just for going away, but in prepping to take what work we can with us. These are the times that Soph and I wish we could hitch up our stamp studios to our vehicles.
Anyways, we did pre-make all our projects for the blog this week so we will have a project to share with you every day.
Today’s card is a bright and colorful birthday card made with the Sweet & Sour Specialty Designer Paper. I have to tell you I just love the bright bold colors and patterns of this paper, in particular the dotted pattern I chose for this card. It’s at times like this that I wish I could buy singles of our papers, because if I could, I’d for sure stock up on these two patterns.
-
Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of textured Very Vanilla CS and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ card.
-
Cut two 2″ x 2″ squares of the orange dotted DP and two 2″ x 2″ squares of the Rose Red DP. Stick the DP squares to the card front, leaving about a 1/8″ space in between the DP squares.
-
Cut a 1 3/4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of textured Pink Pirouette DP and stamp the greeting “birthday” in the bottom right corner of the CS in Basic Black Classic ink.
-
Center and stick the Pink Pirouette CS strip to the card front with SNAIL adhesive.
-
Punch a scrap of Pumpkin Pie CS with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border punch. Stick the punched border to the Pink Pirouette CS strip just above the greeting using Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive.
-
Gather up some chipboard letters that spell the word “happy”. Ink them up with Pumpkin Pie Craft ink. Sprinkle on Iridescent Ice embossing powder and heat with your heat tool.
-
Stick the letters onto the Pink Pirouette CS strip with Tombow adhesive.
-
“Thread” two Pumpkin Pie buttons with small sliver of Pumpkin Pie CS. Stick the buttons to the card front with mini glue dots. You’re done!
Well, I hope you enjoyed today’s card, and we’ll be back tomorrow!

Makeover Monday: Birthday Star
Posted: Monday, June 28th, 2010 | CommentsHappy Monday! Today is our first official day of “summer vacation” as the kid’s finished school on Friday. It was so nice not having to rush out the door first thing this morning. I actually got to linger in bed a little later than usual – which felt great!
Today’s card was “made over” from a card I saw in the June 2010 Cards magazine on pg. 99. Unfortunately I can’t link directly to the picture of the card for you. It was a 4th of July card which was very easily made over to a birthday card.
You’ve probably noticed that I tend to do a lot of birthday cards and thank you cards. That’s because I’ve started thinking in terms of what types of cards I use the most. I used to love to use all sorts of funky phrases and greetings for my cards, but over the years, those are the ones that seem to stay sitting in my card storage boxes because I can’t find an appropriate occasion for which to give them away.
Okay, on to today’s card:
-
Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of So Saffron CS and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card.
-
Ink up the swirl stamp from the Season of Joy stamp set in So Saffron Classic ink, and stamp it twice around the top right corner of the card. Make sure you re-ink in between.
-
Cut a 3″ x 4 1/4″ piece of striped DP from the Happy B-Day Simply Scrappin’ Kit and stick it to the bottom of the card front with Snail adhesive.
-
Stamp the greeting from the On Your Birthday stamp set just above the DP and towards the left edge of the card, in Basic Black Classic ink.
-
Take a 10″ piece of the Real Red Polka Dot Grosgrain ribbon and wrap it around the card front with the stitched side facing upwards. The ribbon ends should be overhanging the right edge of the card. Stick the ribbon to the card front with Snail adhesive.
-
Trim the ribbon ends on an angle.
-
Take a large chipboard star and color it using Brocade Blue Craft ink. Dry the ink with a heat tool.
-
Brush some Crystal Effects onto the star and sprinkle on the Iridescent Chunky Glitter. Tap off the excess.
-
Stick the star to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals. You’re done!

Thursday Trend Watch: In the Clouds
Posted: Thursday, June 10th, 2010 | CommentsI’d have to say that one of my favorite current trends is that of featuring clouds. Although you’ve probably seen Soph incorporate a sponged cloud background into many of her projects, this was actually my first time trying it out. If you’ve looked through paper crafting magazines, blogs or even some of the latest paper crafting products to hit the market, you’re sure to have seen clouds in various forms. Some more defined, others less defined.
In today’s project I decided to create a background with very defined clouds. Here’s how I made my card:
-
Create some cloud templates. To do this I took a Sharpie marker and drew freehand some clouds onto a transparency sheet (also known as acetate or window sheets). I do not use my good Stampin’ Up! window sheets for this, I just use the cheap stuff you can buy from the office supply store.
-
Temporarily stuck the clouds to a 3 3/4″ x 5″ piece of Whisper White CS using Dotto adhesive.
-
Sponge all around the clouds using Baja Breeze Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge. I sponged from the outside edge of the card – starting off the paper and working inwards – sponging in a circular motion.
-
Carefully remove the acetate clouds and then get rid of any remaining adhesive using an adhesive eraser.
-
Stamp the balloon from the Crazy for Cupcakes stamp set onto some scraps of DP from the Happy B-day Simply Scrappin’ Kit, as well as from Real Red CS, using Basic Black Classic ink. Cut them out with paper snips.
-
Using a stamp-a-ma-jig and Basic Black Classic ink, stamp three balloons onto the cloud background. Stick the cut out balloons over top of the stamped ballons with a Stampin’ Dimensional.
-
Add some glitter to the balloons using a 2-way glue pen if desired.
-
Stamp the greeting from the On Your Birthday stamp set in the bottom left corner of the cloud background piece using Basic Black Classic ink.
-
Center and stick the cloud background piece onto a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Real Red CS.
-
Center and stick the Real Red CS to the Baja Breeze card front (created by folding a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Baja Breeze CS in half with a bone folder). You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project. If you’re a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator, be sure to hop on over to my blog on Demo to Demo for some quick tips on using this trend in your business.

Makeover Monday Birthday Card featuring Teri Anderson
Posted: Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 | CommentsI know it’s not Monday, but yesterday was such a rushed day that I never had time to post. I figured you all probably wouldn’t mind too much if it was posted a day late
Today’s card is one I made over from Teri Anderson’s blog. You’ve heard me mention Teri before. She’s one of the Paper Crafts magazine Go-To-Gals, and I just love her style. I find her layouts in particular very unique – she has a way of putting together cards that I just wouldn’t think of. You can see her original card HERE. As you can see, although I kept to the general layout, I couldn’t help changing it up a little :-)
The paper I used was left over scraps from the Happy B-Day Simply Scrappin’ Kit, I used my thicker window sheets to die cut my brackets. I also created a faux metal silver ring which I placed around the number 8. To create the ring I first punched a partial circle out of silver CS using the 1 1/4″ circle punch and then I punched around it with the 1 3/8″ circle punch. I also added in the arrow to draw attention to the age I wanted to celebrate.
Just a quick reminder in case you missed the one I posted last week. With the onset of summer and a much more unpredictable schedule, our posting may be a bit unpredictable too. Although we always try our best to stick to our regular blogging schedule, you may see missed days, or missed themes.
Have a great day!
