Thursday Trend Watch: Reverse Masking using Masking Tape

Posted on: Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Welcome to our first Thursday Trend Watch.  The aim of Thursday’s Trend Watch is to keep you posted on emerging trends in the paper crafting industry and how you may be able to integrate Stampin’ Up! product into those trends. So where do you go to find out about trends?  Well, quite a few places actually.  My business Sunny Stampin’ Inc. is a member of the Craft and Hobby Association, so that is one place I go.  I look at upcoming products being released by competitive companies in the industry, I look at paper crafting magazines and I check out blogs.  One of my favorite blogs by far for watching emerging trends is Moxie Fab World –  Cath Evaldson’s blog (she’s the creative editor for Paper Crafts magazine).

I just happened to pop over to her blog today to see what’s new, and came across today’s post talking about masking tape. If you visit her blog you can read all about how masking tape is being used in the paper crafting industry. Now the card that was featured today used masking tape that was colored using alcohol-based markers.

My first attempt involved trying to sponge color onto masking tape.  Now because masking tape has a glossy surface, die-based ink just doesn’t “take” with the same vibrancy.  As I peeled the masking tape off of the grid paper where I was practicing, I noticed that it left behind a really cool reverse-mask effect.  As soon as I saw that a little light bulb went off in my head and the idea for this card was born.

Rather than regular masking tape though, I used painter’s tape because it peels off of CS really cleanly.

You can download a pdf handout with directions on how this card was made HERE.

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.

What marvelous colors. Super duper cute card! I wonder what else will find it’s way into our Stamper’s Stash besides Painter’s Tape? Lol I am so glad you had your ah-ha moment or this card may have never come to be, and it is just so adorable. Thanks for sharing, and once again, Thanks for the pdf file. I love that you have added this as part of your daily Posts.

Fun! I don’t know if it’s still made or not, with CAD programs and stuff like that available, but drafting tape is also a pretty forgiving tape.

34

Love the fresh colors of this card and the incorporation of the buttons (have so many but often don’t know how to use them in new ways) Thanks for the pdf file
