Stampin’ Technique Week: Shimmer Paint Part 4: Create your own Shimmer Mist & Spray a Masked Image
Posted on: Friday, September 18th, 2009
Rather than my regular Friday Fun Folds post today I thought I’d continue on with my Stampin’ Technique Week using Stampin’ Up!’s new shimmer paints. With this being a new product in the Holiday Mini I figured that now is probably the time to show you guys as many different techniques as I can. I’ll be back to my regular Friday Fun Folds video next week.
Today’s card is actually very simple, and in real life looks stunning. Once again the camera just doesn’t adequately capture the beautiful shimmer.
Here’s how I made the card:
-
Take an empty spray bottle and put 1 oz (~30 ml) of 99% Rubbing Alcohol into the bottle. Add 15 drops of Champagne Mist shimmer paint. Add 15 drops of Soft Suede reinker. Shake really well to mix.
-
You will need a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of acetate (I bought mine from the office supply store – I use those to create my masks rather than Stampin’ Up!’s. I like to save Stampin’ Up!’s acetate sheets for my projects because they are much higher quality, sturdier and more clear than the acetate from the office supply store).
-
Die cut Stampin’ Up!’s Tulipz die out of the acetate sheet to create a mask.
-
Lay a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Very Vanilla CS onto a paper towel. Lay the acetate mask over the Very Vanilla CS.
-
Shake up your shimmer mist very well and then spray onto your masked cardstock. Keep spraying until you get your desired depth of color. My CS was quite saturated with the shimmer mist, but because the rubbing alcohol I used was such a high concentration it did not buckle the CS at all. You would have never known that the paper was doused with a liquid.
-
Let your CS dry. Stamp your greeting from All Holidays in the center of the Very Vanilla CS using Soft Suede Classic ink.
-
Sponge the edges of the Very Vanilla CS piece with Soft Suede Classic ink. Mat the Very Vanilla CS piece onto a 5″ x 5″ piece of Soft Suede CS.
-
Pierce a hole in each corner of the Very Vanilla CS. Insert an Antique Brass brad into each hole and open up the prongs on the back.
-
Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of textured Very Vanilla CS and fold it in half with a bone folder. Sponge the edges of the card front with Soft Suede and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
-
Center and stick the matted image to the card front. You’re done!

I just love everything you are showing us. Thanks for the great information. I would be happy to join you in the looney bin if there is room. We could make it a stamping looney bin. We would just have to learn how to cut without using anything sharp. LOL

I have enjoyed exploring different uses for Shimmer Paints over the past few weeks, but your projects take Shimmer Paint to a new and exciting level. You not only show us a new technique with Shimmer Paint, but with each video, you are also showing us a second idea or technique! Your creativity continues to amaze me.

Brilliant idea here! So the shimmer paint is the new “pearl ex!” How long does the base of the card take to dry once it’s sprayed – could you do this technique at a workshop?
September 20th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Wow Andrea! Love the card… if I wasn’t sold on the shimmer paint and tulip die before… looks like it might make my next order!

I think I’ll try the snowflake and white shimmer paint! My question tho is, how long will the shimmer paint stay in the spray bottle. And does it gum up the pump?
Thanks for all the wonderful sharing.

This would be a great technique to use for mass producing xmas cards as long as you have enough room to line them up to dry. I bet a class would love doing this technique!! Thanks for the great idea.

Andrea, thank you for your awesome videos on you tube. I have recently discovered it and I love it. I am learning so much. I live in Texas and that is too far away to go for one of your classes but if you don’t mind I will continue to view yours for knowledge and inspiration. My demonstrator here should just love you and others who have you tube videos. I always want everything I see:( I am a consultant for CTMH but have never had the courage to have a class and have never even been to one:( I am my only customer and I get enough each month to keep my rating. I think I provide the minimum for my demonstrator too:) Thank you again, Merry Christmas
