Stampin’ Technique Week: Shimmer Paint Part 3 – Using Tinted Shimmer Paint on Tumbled Tile Coasters
Posted on: Thursday, September 17th, 2009
Whew! What a week this has been. I honestly can’t believe that’s its only Thursday. Although on the one hand I’m wishing the week would never end because I’ve been having such a wonderful visit with Soph, on the other hand the two toddlers – Matthew (my 3 year old) and Ezekiel (Soph’s 3 year old) have been driving us nuts. Either they’re mad at each other and yelling at each other at the top of their lungs, or they’re in cahoots and getting into mischief. About 5 minutes ago we found them emptying the front hall and front closet of shoes and throwing them over the baby gate. Soph and I are just about ready to check ourselves into the looney bin (’cause we’re feeling pretty close to looney right now) – we figure that it’s bound to be quieter and if they have internet connection we’re set *lol*
For today’s project I wanted to build on the last video where I showed you how to tint your shimmer paint with reinkers. In this video I wanted to show you how you can use it to color in a stamped image. To add an extra little pizzaz to the project I decided that rather than simply stamping an image onto a piece of cardstock, I’d stamp it onto a tumbled tile and paint with my tinted shimmer paint directly on the tile. Once your tiles is painted and sealed you can add some cork or felt to the bottom to create a coaster. Imagine what a lovely gift four of these coasters would make.
Here’s how I made the coaster:
- You will need a 4″ x 4″ Botticino Tumbled Tile. There are different types of tumbled tiles and you don’t just want to run out and purchase any kind. Check them over carefully because some tumbled tiles are more pitted than others and if that’s the case, your image won’t stamp nicely on it.
- Wipe your tile with a damp cloth and let dry. Stamp your image in Jet Black Staz On ink. Let it set for a few minutes. I did not “set” or “prep” my tile in any other way.
- You will now need to tint your Frost White Shimmer paint in the following colors: Blush Blossom, Soft Suede, Ruby Red. You will also need your Champagne Mist shimmer paint untinted.
- Color in your angel’s wings with Champagne Mist shimmer paint. Color in the angel’s dress with tinted Ruby Red Shimmer Paint, the hair with tinted Soft Sueded shimmer paint and her hands and face with tinted Blush Blossom shimmer paint.
- Sponge the edges of the tile and all around the angel with the tinted Soft Suede shimmer paint.
- Let the tile dry overnight. Spray with a coat of matte Krylon spray (available at most craft stores). Let dry overnight and then spray with a second and even a third coat of Krylon spray (being sure to let it dry overnight in between).
- Stick cork, felt or little rubber “feet” to the back of your tile to create a coaster. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

I want to try this technique for Christmas! Thanks for sharing. As for mischief with toddlers—my 2 were very quiet in the nursery. My neighbor came over to see if everything was ok because she thought she saw smoke from the window. We ran upstairs to my oldest, 20 months old, who climbed up on the changing table and dumped baby powder all over his brother who was 6 months old sitting on the floor. Of course, after the hearts stopped beating rapidly, I ran to get the camera and captured that moment forever!!! The climber is now 16 while the sitter is now 15. I will never forget that moment–treasure every mischievous adventure they have, because when they get bigger, their adventures are scarier!!
Thanks again for your wonderful videos!

I just love this shimmer paint. I guess will have to order the other colors now! Enjoy the mischief while you can. My youngest left for college about a month ago, and I miss her so much. Yes, you can stamp all day, read a good novel, lounge in the back yard, but the love and curiosity of a toddler is wonderful. They will grow up so fast so cherish every moment!

Over the years I’ve been admiring the stamped tumbled tiles and wanting to make some for gifts. You have finally set me in motion and I’m heading to the store this afternoon to pick some up. Better get started soon!
I laughed when I read about the toddler antics. Reminded me of when my kids were little and the things they got into. Now I enjoy my sister telling me about her recently turned 3 twins and the mischief they get into. She doesn’t always think it’s funny but I tell her that in a few years she will remember those moments fondly and laugh. Like the time she went into the kitchen to throw away a dirty diaper and came back to find one of the boys smearing gobs of vaseline on the his brother. It was all over both of them–hair, clothes, arms, face… She says it took forever to get it out. She forgot to take a picture though she was so unnerved.
