Paper Rose Tutorial
Posted on: Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
I just wanted to thank all you lovely ladies for your positive response to last weeks Sweet Pea Tutorial! I love being able to create things that others can use and enjoy! I had many of you ask how to make the rose shown on the box above, so this week I am going share the tutorial for how I made the flower. Next week I will be back with more punch ideas – for which I have tons of ideas
Also ladies, don’t forget to enter our draw for the free Workshop Planners in the post below!
Tutorial:

For starters you will need the Wide Oval Punch, a 2″ x 11″ Strip of colored CS, some green CS to punch your leaves out, a water mister, ink pads that matchi or contrast the CS color of you chose, and an area to work which can take getting wet. You may all have heard about Tim Holtz’s Craft Mat, well instead of using that, I use a Silpat. A Silpat is simply the mat that you buy in the baking section of places like Walmart, or Cookware shops. It is a non-stick kind of plastic-like surface. The non-stick portion comes from the fact that it is teflon coated. It is exactly the same sort of thing as the Craft Mat. I got mine when I was in cooking school. It is great because water will not seep through, inks will wipe off, melted embossing powder will come off easily etc.

Start by rubbing your Razzleberry Ink pad (or whatever color you chose) on your surface. Next, spray your colored surface and your CS ( Pale Plum) with water until it is good and wet!

Now let your CS soak up some of the color. Start to crunch your paper into a ball and stretch it out again. If you want more contrasting color then dab the ink pad over the creases. Spray with water again to let the colors bleed a bit and then crunch and stretch till you have a nice wrinkled texture in your CS.

This shows how much I am actually crunching the paper.

Once my paper is stretched out for the last time, I am ready to start turning it. I start out with a tight roll and then loosen it up as I move around. I also start bending the spiral outward to give it more body.

Here you can see the areas where I started to bend the rose ‘petals’ outwards. All the while that this is going on, I am being sure to pinch the base firmly.

Floral wire, or any thin wire works great to hold the rose closed. I make sure to twist my ends tight so that there is no chance of it getting loose.

I now put my rose down and focus on my CS leaves which were punched out with the Wide Oval punch. The steps are identical. In this case I have Certainly Celery CS and Handsome Hunter ink.

Once my leaves are placed, I tie it down with more wire. Make sure your wire is not quite so tight as to cut through the paper!

You now have your completed rose. Let it dry completely. After drying, your best bet when you are applying it to something is to glue it from the flat portion of a leaf with either a good amount of Crystal Effects or a hot glue gun. It is heavy and is intended more for boxes and such. I am also experimenting with another way of doing them using ‘petals’ instead of a long srip of CS. If you try the other method (using the petals) remember to hold it firmly at the base to avoid it falling appart.
Well it was that simple to do. I hope you all have fun trying it out. Next week I will be back to the regular Punch Pal features. In the meantime Happy Canada Day to all our Canadian readers and a happy day to the rest.

If it’s okay, I’d like to mention that you can get the silpat in stores or from ME! I am a rep for the company that makes them. Demarle at Home. There is also a Roulpat that is used as a surface for rolling out cookies, and I use one as a mat for things like this. It is also great for a million other things! The molds are awesome too! Nothing sticks to them!
the site is http://www.demarleathome.com and my rep id to order online is #5071
