Just Beachy à la “Cards” Magazine

SummerBeach

You may be wondering about the strange title of my post today.  Over the last 6 months I’ve really become a fan of the very trendy Cards Magazine – it’s a totally different style of card-making than what I’m used to as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator – and very different from what you see on a typical Stampin’ Up-product focused blog.  I’m not even sure how one would describe that style of card-making…the term eclectic comes to mind. Rather than a stamped image being the main focus of the cards, the card is composed a variety of different elements – patterned papers, die cuts, stickers, ribbons, buttons, brads, chipboard, letters…you name it!  So today I decided to try something totally fun and totally different from my normal style of stamping and card making….this is the end result.  It’s definitely different, but I really like it.

Here’s how I made it:

  1. Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of Tempting Turquoise Textured CS and fold it in half using a bone folder to create your card base.  Set aside for a moment.
  2. Mat a 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ piece of Tempting Turquoise DP from the Pink Flamingo collection onto a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Pumpkin Pie CS. Set aside for a moment.
  3. To create your sun you are going to need a chipboard circle and some chipboard leaves (these are from the On Board Batch of Blooms collection).  Place some Dotto adhesive onto a scrap piece of paper and stick your chipboard leaves to the Dotto, to keep them in place.  Completely cover the leaves in Summer Sun Craft ink and dry with a heat tool.  Stick your chipboard circle onto the less textured side of a scrap piece of So Saffron textured CS using Tombow Multi-Purpose adhesive.  Trim around the chipboard circle.
  4. Sponge the edges of the So Saffron chipboard circle with Summer Sun Classic ink.  Take a pencil and randomly mark small dots onto the circle, and then punch them out with a Crop-a-Dile.  Insert a So Saffron Brad into each of the holes you punched.
  5. Stick the leaves to the back of the So Saffron chipboard circle with Tombow – you want about half the leaf to be hidden behind the circle.  You may need to adjust the placement of the prongs of the brads to accomodate the leaves.
  6. Stick the sun you just created to your card front with Tombow.  Take the orange rick rack from the Ribbon Originals Pig Tails Collection, cut off three pieces of different lenghts (I think they were 1 1/2″, 2″ and 2 1/2″).  Staple one end of the rick rack along the left edge of the matted DP as shown.  Take the fish stamps from the Just Beachy set, and stamp in Basic Black ink in between the rick rack.  Stick down the free end of each piece of rick rack with a mini glue dot.
  7. Stamp another set of the fish onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Basic Black ink and color them in using the following Stampin’ Write marker colors: Tempting Turquoise, Summer Sun and Pumpkin Pie.  Cut them out as close to the image as you can and then stick them on top of the image you stamped onto the DP with a 2-way glue pen.
  8. Cut out the greeting “Summer” out of Basic Black CS using the Big Shot and the Stampin’ Up! Billboard Sizzlit Decorative Strip die.  Stick the letters onto the card with a 2-way glue pen.  Punch two holes using the Crop-a-dile, just to the left of the word “Summer” and insert 2 silver brads.  As a final touch I grabbed a dotted border from the retired Anchored rub-on collection and added it as shown in the picture.
  9. Center and attach to your card. That’s it!

I hope you have as much fun looking at this card as I had making it!

5

Love the rick rack!

6

What a great card. That type of card is usually called scrappy because the elements used are like those on many scrapbook pages.

7

Really cute,love that stamp set.

8

Love that you can step out of your normal style and create something entirely different. That just shows how enormously talented you are.

The bold, bright, summery colours are beautiful together and you’ve got to adore those fish. They are hilarious!!!

9

Those fish just make me smile! Great card!

10

Love the card, it’s cute! It’s not the usual card that you see everyday. This is more diversed which I love about. TFS.

I love the combo of turquoise and orange, they make each other pop. This card is different than the usual, but I like it a lot. Lots of dimension, looks like a mini scrapbook page.

The fish facing right always cracks me up, his snaggle teeth remind me of a boxer (dog).

thanks for sharing such a cute card.

Julie

Very cute. I love that magazine and I like to make different kinds of cards. You did a great job with this card! By the way, I just made your little scrapbook last night for my brother’s baby (coming…not soon enough!) I will try to take a picture of it and send it to you so you can see how it turned out. I used the baby boy SS kit. Thanks for all the inspiration!

14

I ALWAYS like looking at your cards. It’s fun to branch out and learn new things. I love your new picture of yourself, by the way. I get your posts in my reader, so I don’t often visit the blogsite, but every once in a while I just HAVE to comment on a project!

33

You’re right–not your normal style but REALLY COOL! One of the better cards I’ve seen done with this stamp set! Thanks for sharing and for encouraging others to try something new! My turn to go find a new thing to try!

39

I like the different style that you did with this. It’s new but still you. Thanks for the ideals.

40

I call cards from that magazine “scrappy”, instead of “stampy”. Love the magazine and love how you’ve made this card! Gorgeous colours!

I did, I did have as much fun looking as you did making! Adorable!

42

I love the unusual color combo. It’s nice to step outside of the box every once in a while and try something new. Lovely card! Thanks for the inspriation

I call this ~stepping outside the box”. thanks for the inspiration. we all need to do more of this. love the color combo and the use of many products. way to go, girl!

44

What is there not to love about this card? I love the use of the ric rac as waves, the color of the fish, the brads in the sun (I would have never thought of that one), and the color combo. Great card.

45

How stinkn’ cute is that. I got that stamp set just because it is cute & now it’s even more appealing. You should submit your work to SU.. they are such great samples for advertising… everything you do makes me want to go buy it if I don’t already have it.
