Crystal Ornament Christmas Card
Posted on: Monday, October 5th, 2009
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Can you tell where the inspiration for this card came from? Check out my 12 weeks of Christmas button in the right sidebar. That was designed by Michelle Laycock - she designed that and my 12 weeks of Christmas newsletter banner (she pretty much does all my graphic design) – isn’t she fantastic? Anyways, that’s where my card inspiration came from today.
What do you think of this picture style with the DP paper in the background? Honest opinions please because if you all (or most of you) tell me you like it, then I’ll keep doing it *lol*. I got the idea for photographing my cards this way from one of my “blogging heroes” Kristina Werner. I’ve been following Kristina’s blog for a few years now and absolutely love her clean stamping style. Awhile back she started photographing her cards using patterned paper in the background. Not only do I personally love how it looks, from a photography perspective I find it a lot easier to get a more accurate color than when photographing against a white background.
You can see a video on how I made the card below:
Directions:
- Take a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Whisper White CS and sponge the edges using Old Olive Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
- Stamp the swirl from the Baroque Motifs stamp set onto the piece of Whisper White CS in Old Olive Classic ink.
- Stamp the greeting from the Four the Holidays stamp set in the bottom left corner of the Whisper White CS using Basic Black Classic ink and a Stamp-a-ma-jig if necessary.
- Mat the Whisper White CS piece onto a piece of 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″ Old Olive CS using Snail adhesive. Set aside for a moment.
- Stamp the ornament from the Delightful Decorations stamp set twice onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Real Red Classic ink. Make sure you re-ink the stamp in between.
- Punch out one of the ornaments using the Ornament punch. Punch out only the center of the second ornament using the 1″ circle punch.
- Center and stick the 1″ circle to the ornament using two Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Punch a hole in the top of the ornament using the 1/16″ handheld circle punch. Insert a 6″ piece of silver elastic cord through the hole.
- Holding the cord in your hand, carefully flip the ornament over and place 4 Stampin’ Dimensionals on the back. Do not skimp on the Dimensionals because as you coat the ornament with Crystal Effects in a later step, the ornament will curl downwards looking almost as though it were merging with the Whisper White CS beneath.
- Remove the backings from the Stampin’ Dimensionals and stick the ornament to the stamped Whisper White CS piece.
- Stick the silver elastic cord to the top portion of the Whisper White CS using scotch tape. Trim the ends of the silver cord so that they do not overhang the Whisper White CS.
- Take a 1-3/4″ x 4″ piece of Merry Moments DP and scallop one edge using the Scallop Edge punch.
- Lay a 5-1/2″ piece of 5/8″ Real Red Grosgrain ribbon across the center of the DP. Bring the ends around to the back of the DP and stick down using Snail adhesive.
- Stick the DP to the top of the Whisper White CS piece using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Tie an 8″ piece of 5/8″ Real Red Grosgrain ribbon in a knot around the first piece. Trim the ends of the ribbon on an angle.
- Coat the ornament with Crystal Effects – use a foam brush to help spread out the Crystal Effects. Sprinkle on clear chunky glitter. Tap off the excess. You’re done!

I agree w/the other gals I do like how the DP looks behind the card.
As always thank you for sharing

Wow it looks stunning with the DP in the back… how far from your card is it ??? Love the fact that it is blurry while the card is so crisp. Definitively going to give it a try. Also love your card as always.
Thanks for sharing

Love the patterned paper background. Really helps the card to stand out!! Good job!
October 5th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I thought I could get away with not ordering the ornament stamps but I may have to rethink. Beautiful, as usual. Thanks so much.
October 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Gorgeous card…love it! I also love how the dp looks behind the photo!
October 5th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Beautiful card! Love it! I also really like the DSP background. I may have to try that myself!
October 5th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
I think it looks great Andrea with the DSP as a backdrop! Love the card and tutorial. Thanks
October 5th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Another classy Christmas card. I like it.
October 5th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Andrea, I like the DSP behind the card. I was curious as to why you didn’t just tie the ribbon around the DSP on your card. Does it save ribbon to do it the way you did? Beautiful card. Thanks for sharing!
October 5th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Each time you video something, you make me want to order something else from SU. You are great for their business.
I love the Christmas ornament card. Easy to do with a lot of impact.
October 5th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
I love this card! And all of your creations! I also love the dp background. I use dp’s whenever I take a picture of my cakes or cards
because somethimes I have a “messy” background that I don’t usually
see til the picture gets downloaded! Then it’s too late to retake!
October 5th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I think this card is stunning in it’s simplicity! My first thought about the DSP in the background was “too busy”. But after scrolling through some past posts and comparing the photos, I have to say I like it! I can see how it is easier to keep the card colors accurate with a coordinating background. I do like that the background blurs and the pattern is very subtle.
October 5th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Your site is now one of my favs. Beautiful card.
October 5th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Love the card; it’s very pretty. As for the photo, I have to say that I really like the all white background better. I’m not sure why, maybe I just find the DSP distracting.
October 5th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Loving the DSP in the background, such a great idea…I like it that it is still half white, it really lends to the perspective of the colours involved.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Can’t wait for my punch to get in. Love the use of chunky glitter. Reminds me of my grandparents ornaments.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Love the card and the dsp in the back really highlights the color combo thanks for sharing.
October 5th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Hi Andrea…
I love the card and so easy to do!!
The background paper is a Plus I think!!
Show’s it off nicely!!
October 5th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
I love it with the DSP in the background – in my case it means that the DSP is hiding all the clutter in the background!! LOL
really love the baroque swirl – it makes almost any card it appears on that much classier – love it love it love it!
October 5th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I think the dsp looks awesome behind the card, very professional and ties it all together… we all love to co-ordinate don’t we!? Great card, I like to learn more ideas for my chunky glitter! Thanks!
October 5th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Love the dp as a backdrop for the card. Love the card as well
Thanks!

October 5th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Beautiful card! I can’t wait to try this one.
October 5th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Andrea,
Love the card. It looks nice and crisp too me. As for the DP Background I prefer the white background, for I found the DP to busy and had to take a second glance for the card.
October 5th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
What I love about your samples is that you make me get out accessories I haven’t used and try them out!! Thanks for your great card!
October 5th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I like the look of the DP behind , I guess as long as its a very subtle pattern. Beautiful card – love the simplicity!
October 5th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
How did you guess? I have been wanting some inspiration to use my Baroque medallion stamp for Christmas! Thank you so much!
By the way, I love the DSP background paper in the photo. However, I will take your cards either way, since I CRAVE your projects DAILY!!

I like the card. I see so many using the brocade. It looks great with the ornaments.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
This is a simply stunning card……..just love those colors together, and the sparkley chunky glitter adds that little extra special touch. I very much like the patterned paper behind your project………it is very pleasing to the eye and not quite as stark as all white.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Great card as always. Thanks for sharing.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Your card is gorgeous by itself, but I feel this particular DP enhanced the card. Have noticed Kristina added that to her blog, and the paper seems to compliment the card very well. Thanks for keeping our minds active with all your awesome ideas!
October 5th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
This is a GORGEOUS card! I’m a swirlie girl so anything with swirlies gets my vote

October 5th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
I Love the card..The background paper is a great idea but I found it confusing at first since the card has green pp too….maybe use a contrasting colour??? Great idea though! Thanks.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Beautiful card! I like the DSP background:)
October 6th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Love the card and I agree….the DSP as a background for photographing your cards is a great idea. I shall have to try that one myself. I also tend to use a white background.
You and your sis both do beautiful work.
Thanks for sharing!

I love the designer paper background! What a great idea – keep doing it!
October 6th, 2009 at 8:08 am
Looking for an quick card & this is it! I like the dp background as long as it’s subtle, tone-on-tone-ish. A busy print would take away from your focal point, your awesome projects!
October 6th, 2009 at 9:14 am

great tutorial. i guess you save ribbon the way you did it. right?!
October 6th, 2009 at 9:31 am
I love this card! Baroque Motifs is such a versatile stamp set to have and paired with this new set, makes for a very simple but elegant card.

The DP background is very professional looking. Nice touch.
October 6th, 2009 at 10:45 am
You’re killing me here, Andrea! I’ve been telling myself that I don’t need another Christmas stamp set, but I love what you’ve been doing with these ornaments. I might just HAVE to get just this one more. I’ve been noticing Kristina’s DP backgrounds in her photos, and I like the effect it gives. The subtle pattern helped to set off your card today.
October 6th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Love both the card and using the DSP for the background.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
I love Kristina’s blog! I love your to, I do like the way it looks in the picture. I noticed the difference the second I saw it. I do think either way is appealing though. Hard choice! Either way I will still be a die hard fan of the both of you.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Wow, the best of all worlds – Baroque basics stamp set, chunky glitter, Christmas ornament and greeting – red and green colors…..I am in love. This is a beautiful card. Thank you thank you for this great inspiration!
October 6th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
So elegant and yet easy…I absolutely love it Andrea.
October 6th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
How adorable! I had to set right out to make my own, but I didn’t have your supplies so I adapted:)…I’ve linked you on my blog – thanks for another great idea & video!!
October 6th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
The designer paper you choose looks really nice. (And the card is lovely) Sometimes I find the DP that Kristina uses is too busy for me. So, in the end I guess it depends on which DP you use. And you have an excellent “eye” so I’d say go for it.
October 6th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Very pretty card! I like your photography background DP too!
October 6th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I love the simple clean look of this Christmas card and that it’s so quick and easy but it has that bling! Love the background paper when you take the pictures. The tutorial is great and I love the Holiday blog button design!
