I want to warmly welcome all of you that may be visiting my blog for the first time via the Paper Crafts World Tour of Card Makers. I am so excited and honored to have been asked by Cath Evaldson, the Creative Editor at Paper Crafts Magazine, to take part in this event as one of the Canadian card makers!

As many of my long time blog readers know, Paper Crafts magazine is my absolute FAVORITE magazine and source I often turn to for inspiration. That’s why I’m so thrilled to be involved in this event and to share my passion for card making with other card makers around the world!

The World Tour of Card Makers is being hosted on Cath’s blog – Moxie Fab World- in honor of World Card Making Day, which takes place this Saturday, Oct. 3rd.  For those you that may be unfamiliar with World Card Making day – it is a holiday that was founded initally as National Card Making Day by Paper Crafts magazine four years ago. It met with such fantastic worldwide response that it quickly became known as World Card Making day. You’re definitely going to want to join in the fun with card makers from around the world as we celebrate the joy of creating and giving handmade cards. Not sure how to celebrate?  Check out the World Card Making Day Website for ideas!

The World Tour of Card Makers involves five days of blog hopping around the world with amazing prizes being offered each day. You can see the prizes over at the Moxie Fab World blog. You’ll have LOTS of chances to win, so keep reading, because I’ll tell you how at the bottom of this post!

The World Tour started on Monday with nine amazing artists from mainland Europe, Tuesday it was Australia and the UK, Wednesday we had Dominican Republic, Japan, Morocco, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Singapore, today we are touring Canada and then finishing on Friday in the US.

You can see the card I created especially for the World Tour below.

DelightfulDecorationsBlogPic

You can download a one-page pdf with supplies & step-by-step instructions for this card HERE.

Although not a difficult card, it incorporates a lot of different products and techiques so I thought I’d put together video showing you how I made the card.

Okay, and now on to how to win. First off, leave a comment here on my blog and then go to the Moxie Fab World blog and leave a comment there as well.  From the Moxie Fab World blog you’ll be able to see one of my projects as well as the projects of the other World Tour participants.  You can leave comments on THEIR blogs as well for even more chances to win. Limit: one comment per person per blog. You can check out all the prizes on the Moxie Fab World blog - there’s a different prize for each day of the tour. Comments will close at midnight on Sunday, October 4th (no matter where you live). Prize-winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 6th.

That’s not all though. During the celebration all cardmakers can upload their creations to the World Card Making Day gallery where they will be eligible to win prizes from both the Papercrafts Connection Blog and the Moxie Fab World blog. There is even a competition where you can have your cards published in Papercrafts Magazine and a blog tour where you can catch up with some talented cardmakers – check out their blogs for a coupon for 25% off PaperCrafts online store.

walfordxmasbuttonI am planning on celebrating World Card Making Day by kicking off my 12 Weeks of Christmas event.  Can you believe it’s only 12 weeks until Christmas? Once a week for the next twelve weeks my sister Sophia and I will be sending out a special newsletter to email subscribers ONLY.  Each email newsletter will feature a fantastic Christmas project ranging from cards, tags, gifts & gift packaging designed EXCLUSIVELY for this event. These will be projects that we will not be featuring here on my blog or in my regular email newsletters.

I’m sure you’ve probably seen plenty of other blogs advertising their own 12 weeks of Christmas but in true Sunny Stampin’ style – we’ve added our own unique twist.  Each email will link to a PRIVATE WEB PAGE from which you will be able to download a pdf with the project instructions so that you can print it off and put it in your project ideas binder (don’t have a project ideas binder? – then you’d better start one *lol*). These pdf’s will be similar to the one I provided above for today’s card. Not only that though – on the private web page you’ll be able to watch an EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED video on how the project was done. Each video will only be available for ONE week. Once again, these videos are not going to be available for public viewing – they will not be uploaded either here or to You Tube.  Best of all, the 12 Weeks of Christmas event is absolutely FREE! All you have to do to get in on this is join my email newsletter list - which you can do at the top right hand corner of my sidebar.  So don’t miss out because the first email goes out Saturday!

MedallionCard

Today’s card is another very simple one that is going to demonstrate another one of the most basic uses of shimmer paint.  THE most basic use of shimmer paint is pretty much using it to ink up your stamp as I did with my Shimmer Paint Part 1 card. Today’s card shows you the second most basic use – and that is using the shimmer paint as an overlay – in other words you use it OVER a stamp image that has already been inked using a Classic ink. It’s a fun, easy and beautiful technique.  You can see it in the video below:

Here’s how I made my card:

  1. Take a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Very Vanilla CS and sponge the edges using Soft Suede Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
  2. Stamp the greeting (“Season’s Greetings” from the Many Merry Messages stamp set) in the top left corner of the Very Vanilla CS.
  3. Ink up the medallion stamp in Ruby Red Classic ink.  Take a sponge dauber dipped in Champagne Mist shimmer paint and dab it over the Ruby Red Classic ink.  Cover as much or as little of the image as desired.  Because the Champagne Mist glimmer paint is a sheer, translucent paint the Ruby Red still shows through beautifully.
  4. Stamp the medallion onto the Very Vanilla CS.
  5. Clean the medallion stamp very well to remove all the ink/shimmer paint.  Repeat step 3 and stamp the medallion onto a scrap of Very Vanilla CS.  Let dry (this takes less than 5 minutes). Punch out the center of the Medallion with a 1 3/4″ circle punch.
  6. Mat the Very Vanilla CS onto a 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″ piece of Ruby Red CS using Snail adhesive.  Mat the Ruby Red CS to a Soft Suede card base (take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Soft Suede CS and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card base).
  7. Take the Medallion center piece and stick a large cream half-back pearl to the center using a mini glue dot.
  8. Mount the center piece to the center of the Medallion on the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

ReverseShimmerI’ve received emails from some of you who are on dial-up and struggling to view the videos and from others who wish they had the videos in one easy place so that they could watch them whenever and wherever.  So…..your wish is granted!  I’ve put together a DVD with 5 videos (the four listed above and todays video), a BONUS Shimmer Paint tips video, PLUS a BONUS technique video showing you how to create a shimmery tinted background using an embossing folder – this is different from any videos you may have seen where the embossed image has the shimmer paint – in this project the embossed portion is the true color of the CS (i.e. Vanilla) and it is the background that has the shimmer paint - I’ll be demonstrating the card to the left.  That’s over 1 hour’s worth of videos on DVD which you can purchase for $20 (this includes free shipping to the US and Canada)Please note, I will always continue to provide my videos here on my blog (and on You Tube) absolutely FREE. However, each DVD video that I put out will contain one or two BONUS videos that will not be shared on my blog (these are an extra perk for those that order the DVD).  In selling my DVD’s this way, not only does it help out those who specifically request the videos on DVD format, but it also helps me cover the cost of my time in producing these videos.

To order your video please click on the link below:

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! I’ll be back tomorrow with another video tutorial.  Yes you read that right.  From now moving on forward it is my goal to share with you a video a day (Monday – Friday).  I’ve heard from you guys over and over again that it’s so much easier to SEE how I’m making my card – so each project I share with you here on my blog will have a video to go with it. How’s that sound?

What I’d love your feedback on though is whether with the videos you still need me to provide the step-by-step written directions. Please leave me your thoughts in the comments section of this post.  One person’s name will be drawn on Friday and that person will receive a free shimmer paint DVD!  Oh and by the way, for those of you still waiting for my Christmas Stamp Camp tutorial winner and for the sale of the pdf tutorial – that will be coming tomorrow.

TulipzCard

Rather than my regular Friday Fun Folds post today I thought I’d continue on with my Stampin’ Technique Week using Stampin’ Up!’s new shimmer paints. With this being a new product in the Holiday Mini I figured that now is probably the time to show you guys as many different techniques as I can. I’ll be back to my regular Friday Fun Folds video next week.

Today’s card is actually very simple, and in real life looks stunning.  Once again the camera just doesn’t adequately capture the beautiful shimmer.

Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Take an empty spray bottle and put 1 oz (~30 ml) of 99% Rubbing Alcohol into the bottle.  Add 15 drops of Champagne Mist shimmer paint.  Add 15 drops of Soft Suede reinker.  Shake really well to mix.
  2. You will need a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of acetate (I bought mine from the office supply store – I use those to create my masks rather than Stampin’ Up!’s.  I like to save Stampin’ Up!’s acetate sheets for my projects because they are much higher quality, sturdier and more clear than the acetate from the office supply store).
  3. Die cut Stampin’ Up!’s Tulipz die out of the acetate sheet to create a mask.
  4. Lay a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Very Vanilla CS onto a paper towel.  Lay the acetate mask over the Very Vanilla CS.
  5. Shake up your shimmer mist very well and then spray onto your masked cardstock. Keep spraying until you get your desired depth of color.  My CS was quite saturated with the shimmer mist, but because the rubbing alcohol I used was such a high concentration it did not buckle the CS at all.  You would have never known that the paper was doused with a liquid.
  6. Let your CS dry.  Stamp your greeting from All Holidays in the center of the Very Vanilla CS using Soft Suede Classic ink.
  7. Sponge the edges of the Very Vanilla CS piece with Soft Suede Classic ink. Mat the Very Vanilla CS piece onto a 5″ x 5″ piece of Soft Suede CS.
  8. Pierce a hole in each corner of the Very Vanilla CS.  Insert an Antique Brass brad into each hole and open up the prongs on the back.
  9. Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of textured Very Vanilla CS and fold it in half with a bone folder.  Sponge the edges of the card front with Soft Suede and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
  10. Center and stick the matted image to the card front.  You’re done!

TumbledTiles

Whew!  What a week this has been.  I honestly can’t believe that’s its only Thursday.  Although on the one hand I’m wishing the week would never end because I’ve been having such a wonderful visit with Soph, on the other hand the two toddlers – Matthew (my 3 year old) and Ezekiel (Soph’s 3 year old) have been driving us nuts.  Either they’re mad at each other and yelling at each other at the top of their lungs, or they’re in cahoots and getting into mischief. About 5 minutes ago we found them emptying the front hall and front closet of shoes and throwing them over the baby gate. Soph and I are just about ready to check ourselves into the looney bin (’cause we’re feeling pretty close to looney right now) – we figure that it’s bound to be quieter and if they have internet connection we’re set *lol*

For today’s project I wanted to build on the last video where I showed you how to tint your shimmer paint with reinkers.  In this video I wanted to show you how you can use it to color in a stamped image.  To add an extra little pizzaz to the project I decided that rather than simply stamping an image onto a piece of cardstock, I’d stamp it onto a tumbled tile and paint with my tinted shimmer paint directly on the tile. Once your tiles is painted and sealed you can add some cork or felt to the bottom to create a coaster.  Imagine what a lovely gift four of these coasters would make.

Here’s how I made the coaster:

  1. You will need a 4″ x 4″ Botticino Tumbled Tile. There are different types of tumbled tiles and you don’t just want to run out and purchase any kind.  Check them over carefully because some tumbled tiles are more pitted than others and if that’s the case, your image won’t stamp nicely on it.
  2. Wipe your tile with a damp cloth and let dry.  Stamp your image in Jet Black Staz On ink.  Let it set for a few minutes.  I did not “set” or “prep” my tile in any other way.
  3. You will now need to tint your Frost White Shimmer paint in the following colors: Blush Blossom, Soft Suede, Ruby Red.  You will also need your Champagne Mist shimmer paint untinted.
  4. Color in your angel’s wings with Champagne Mist shimmer paint.  Color in the angel’s dress with tinted Ruby Red Shimmer Paint, the hair with tinted Soft Sueded shimmer paint and her hands and face with tinted Blush Blossom shimmer paint.
  5. Sponge the edges of the tile and all around the angel with the tinted Soft Suede shimmer paint.
  6. Let the tile dry overnight.  Spray with a coat of matte Krylon spray (available at most craft stores).  Let dry overnight and then spray with a second and even a third coat of Krylon spray (being sure to let it dry overnight in between).
  7. Stick cork, felt or little rubber “feet” to the back of your tile to create a coaster. You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

GoodFriend

Today there are actually going to be three blog posts but spaced out because my time has been, and still is, all chopped up today.  Soph & her family have been visiting with us since Saturday.  With the rush of the Sept. 14th deadline for getting my Stamp Classes by Email and Class Planners to subscribers over, today we decided to take a day “off” work and drive into Toronto for some shopping.  We had a fantastic time!  The only downside is that I hadn’t planned on doing quite as much shopping as I did! The problem of course, is that when you get me into a crafting-related store my willpower turns to mush *lol*

In this first post I’m going to share with you another fun technique you can do with shimmer paint.  In the video below I show you how to tint Stampin’ Up!’s frost white shimmer paint with re-inkers.  This is such a fun technique and the resulting colors are absolutely gorgeous. I used a 2:3 ratio of re-inker to shimmer paint.  So about 2 drops of reinker to three drops of the shimmer paint.  The best thing is that with this technique I now have at least 48 colors of shimmer paint now available to me….well actually more because as you’ll see in the video, you can mix colors of reinker to get new colors. I mixed Summer Sun and Pumpkin Pie reinkers to get the beautiful tangerine color you see on the flower.

GoodFriendPicture2

It’s really too bad that the camera can’t adequately pick up the shimmer because in real life it just looks so beautiful. What I was surprised at was how intense the colors were, even though they were mixed with a white paint.

Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Take a 3″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS and punch along one 4″ side using Stampin’ Up!’s spiral punch.  Sponge the edges of the Whisper White CS with Tempting Turquoise Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
  2. Stamp the Good Friend greeting along the bottom of the Whisper White CS piece using Basic Black Classic ink. Set aside for a moment.
  3. Take a small artist’s palette (from the dollar store) and place two drops of Tempting Turquoise re-inker in one well.  In the second well add one drop of Summer Sun reinker and one drop of Pumpkin Pie reinker (this will create a tangerine color). Add three drops of Stampin’ Up!’s frost white shimmer paint into EACH well.  Mix each color with it’s own paintbrush (from the dollar store) or a toothpick.
  4. Take a sponge dauber, dab it into the Tempting Turquoise shimmer paint and then dab it onto the bird image from the Good Friend stamp set.  Stamp it onto a scrap of Whisper White CS. Set aside to dry.
  5. Ink up the beak and the flower in the same way using the tangerine color and stamp them onto a scrap of Whisper White CS.  Ink up the bird’s legs with the sponge dauber and tangerine color and stamp them onto the 3″ x 4″ Whisper White CS piece.  Position the legs so that it looks like the bird is standing on the greeting.
  6. Take the images you stamped on the scrap of Whisper White CS and cut them out using your paper snips, being sure to leave a small white border around them.
  7. Lay the bird on a foam mat.  Pierce a hole through the eye using a paper-piercing tool.  Insert a black brad from the Vintage Brads collection. Mount them to the Whisper White CS piece using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  8. Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Taken with Teal CS and fold it in half using your bone folder. Randomly stamp the sparkle image from the Good Friend stamp set in VersaMark ink over the top half of the card front.
  9. Center and mat a 3″ x 4 1/8″ piece of Kaleidoscope DP along the bottom of the card front.
  10. Place a small amount of Snail adhesive on the center of the card front along the edge of the DP. Take an 8″ piece of Pumpkin Pie Striped Grosgrain ribbon and wrap it around from behind the card front and stick the ribbon ends to the Snail adhesive on the card front (see video for clarification).
  11. Stick the Whisper White CS piece to the card front on a slight angle using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  12. Take the stamped flower and pierce a hole through the center using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat.  Insert a small corduroy Pumpkin pie brad. Stick it to the card front as shown in the picture using a Stampin’ Dimensional. You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!

Here’s a couple of shimmer-paint related tips:

Tip 1: If you have very small containers (about the size of our glitter containers or smaller which you can purchase at most dollar stores) you can actually mix up your shimmer paint colors in them and then save the excess to use later.

Tip 2: Clean the shimmer paint off of your stamps using baby wipes FIRST and then clean them with your Stampin’ Scrub and Stampin’ Mist.  Whatever you do, don’t let the paint (in particular the platinum shimmer paint) sit on your stamp for too long as the longer it sits the harder it is to clean off.

Tip 3: Always shake your bottle well between every use.
