Faux Silk Technique Featuring a Mixed Media Twist
Posted: Thursday, March 31st, 2011 | CommentsAfter weeks of hoping that Spring might really, finally be here, I woke up to a gray sky and snow on the ground. Which I think is why I chose blue and yellow for my project colors today – something to remind me of the blue sky and sun – which I’m really aching to see.
Today’s project features a mixed-media twist on the faux silk technique. If you’ve never tried the faux silk technique before, it involves stamping on tissue paper and then decoupaging that to a piece of cardstock. When it dries, the effect looks kind of like silk. For my card, I covered my Stampin’ Up! Greenhouse Gala designer paper with white tissue paper. I then painted over the entire surface with a wash of Champagne Shimmer paint and Crumb Cake Refill. After that I painted just the corners with undiluted Crumb Cake ink refill. Once that was dry I stamped over the entire thing with the Sanded Background stamp in Timber Brown StazOn (a StazOn color that Stampin’ Up! used to carry). For the other elements of my card I did quite a bit of aging and distressing with ink and shimmer paint on the cardstock, crochet trim and roses.
The card uses virtually all Stampin’ Up! product which you can see listed below. Since there is a lot to this card in terms of steps and techniques I am going to be filming a video for it tomorrow which will go into Paper Crafter’s Library on Monday.

Shimmery Pastel Paint Stampin’ Up! Card
Posted: Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 | CommentsWhat a busy March break we’ve been having (i.e. spring break in the USA)! All 5 kids are home, and we had Soph and her family (she has 3 kids) here for a few days so things were VERY LOUD – but a lot of fun. My daughter Julia and Soph’s daughter Naomie spent a good portion of their time creating a beauty salon and a cafe. They were giving manicures and pedicures and back massages, then we could order a “specialty drink” off of their “menu”. It was so cute! Although Soph and her family went home yesterday, the fun has been continuing, because my husband took the whole week off. Yesterday we took the four older kids to a “toonie matinee” at the theater and saw The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and today we took them bowling. So it’s been a lot of fun and a wonderful opportunity to spend time with my family.
Of course with everyone home, getting any work done is pretty challenging.
Today I wanted to share with you a Stampin’ Up! card that features the same Shimmery Pastel Paint technique I used on this card HERE. This particular technique – stamping with the shimmery pastel paint – works with any solid image stamp. Unfortunately the picture is not the greatest – you just can’t see the beautiful shimmer on the flowers very well.
Tomorrow in the Paper Crafter’s Library we’ll be releasing a video showing you how to make the shimmery pastel paint, as well as three separate videos showing you different applications of the Shimmery Pastel Paint – how to stamp with it (as in the card here and on the Paper Crafter’s World blog), how to color in an outline image with it, and how to paint with it to create shimmery die cuts.
The card featured today uses my LEAST favourite collection of Stampin’ Up! DP – the Blueberry Crisp collection. Honestly, I’m not sure why I bought it – at the time I was buying all of Stampin’ Up!’s other patterns of designer paper. I think my reasoning at the time was that I wanted a “complete collection” – of course, it’s been sitting on my shelf since then, because it just never seemed to work with anything I wanted to make. I actually had to force myself to use it with this card. It was the starting point for today’s project. I pulled it off my shelf and decided that THAT was what I was going to use.
Stamps: For All You Do (Stampin’ Up!)
Ink: Stampin’ Pastels, Frost White Shimmer Paint, Early Espresso Classic ink (Stampin’ Up!)
Paper: Sahara Sand CS, Very Vanilla CS, Pacific Point CS, Blueberry Crisp DP, Neutrals Stack DP (Stampin’ Up!)
Accessories: Stampin’ Dimensionals, Basic Pearls, Square Lattice embossing folder, Big Shot, Itty Bitty Shapes punch pack
Second card from Stamper’s Club
Posted: Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 | Comments
Last week I showed you the first project of my rather unconventional Christmas card. This is the second project of my Stampers Club from last month. Once again it does not follow Christmas tradtion lol. Well, I always was a bit of a rebel. Now it just comes out in my cards
Now I am sad to say that there won’t be videos for a little while to accompany the projects. We are heading towards Christmas, and are in a rush to prepare for all our January releases. We have a really exciting line-up of projects coming up, but of course that means that our time is becoming very limited.
We are leaving to be with family in less then a week and while away we will not be able to film (imagine trying to film a quiet video while surrounded by 8 children and 10 adults lol). We will still be showing projects, though probably not as frequently. So I apologize to all our wonderful readers, and hope you will bear with us through this busy holiday.
Ok, now on to my not so conventional Christmas card 2.
Directions:
- With your BigShot and Scallop Oval die, cut out an oval out of Whisper White and Basic Black CS. Discard the Whisper White scallop section, and the center of the Basic Black Scallop.
- Now take your Whisper White oval and sponge it with Bermuda Bay Classic ink over the whole surface. Next Sponge the oval with Night of Navy. Make sure that you leave the center unsponged with the darker color. Finally you will sponge with Basic Black Classic ink along the very outer edge.
- Once the oval is dry you will take your Snowflake from the Serene Snowflake stamp set and ink it with a sponge dauber and some Platinum Shimmer Paint. Stamp the snowflake randomly over the oval. You should not need to re-ink after the first time.
- Once the oval is dry take your Versamark pad and sponge the entire surface of the oval. Sprinkle with Glassy Glaze Enamel (embossing pwd.) and heat with your heat tool. As soon as it is set repeat the process. You will add a total of 3 coats. As soon as your last layer is done, place the oval into the freezer. Leave it until it is very cold and brittle to the touch ( it may look curled at the edges, this is normal). When it is cold, immediately remove it and gently bend and straighten the oval. This will create cracks throught the surface. Do not be to vigorous or you will lose pieces of the enamel. If your piece does not crack well, then you may have waited too long after removing it from the freezer to start to bend. This step must be done immediately after removal from freezer.
- Now take your Whisper White card base and lightly sponge the edges with Night of Navy, next drag a Basic Black Classic ink across the edges.
- Take your Basic Black Scallop oval and determine which side you will have face up to match your center Whisper White oval. This step is essential or you may not find it fitting properly. Now add a touch of Platinum Shimmer paint with your sponge dauber to the correct side of your Basic Black Scallop Oval and glue it down to your card. Glue your Center Whisper White sponged oval to the center. Now with your 1/16″ hole punch, punch holes on either side of the Basic Black Scallop oval and insert your blue Rhinestone brads.
- Stamp out your Patterned Pines trees on Whisper White CS with Old Olive Classic ink. Cut out and sponge the edges with Night of Navy and then stick over the Oval frame with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Stamp out your greeting and use your Modern Label punch to punch it out. Stick it on with glue dots. You are done!

Polar Bear Under a Night Sky

I know, I know, I am once again posting super late. My only excuse is that a lot of my club ladies were coming by to pick up orders today, and I spent lots of time chatting, and not so much working. I decided that I would show you some of my Stamper’s Club projects. This is the first of three projects. It is my norm to make up 3 projects for my Club. Two cards and one 3-D item. This was my month to create totally non-traditional Christmas cards. I was a little nervous when the ladies arrived about what they would think of the projects, thankfully it was well recieved. So today you will see the first and then you will see the other’s in the next couple weeks. Now you may notice that the stars on the top of this one are not stamped, in fact they are punched. I admit here and now that I cheated and borrowed my daughter’s mini star punch that she got at the dollar store. All I can say is that when you have a room full of women, the worst thing you can do to them is say that they must cut and color a bunch of stamped stars. So in the interest of my health, I used the punch. The video will show this project with stamped stars. So I really hope you enjoy this weeks project
Directions:
- Stamp out your bear on Kraft CS with Versamark ink and emboss with white Stampin’ Emboss pwd. Cut out.
- Stamp out your Ice floe on a window sheet using your Basic Black Classic ink and then emboss with black Stampin’ Emboss pwd. Cut out.
- Stamp out 8 stars on SU watercolor paper with black Staz-On , color with your Crushed Curry and Pumpkin Pie Stampin’ Write marker and then blend the color using your water brush. Cut out.
- Stamp out your cup of cocoa on Whisper White CS with your Close to Cocoa Classic ink and then cut out.
- Now block off the top portion of your main image Whisper White circle (use piece of computer paper) and sponge the water using Bermuda Bay, Not Quite Navy and Basic Black Classic ink.
- Remove the mask and sponge the top sky area with Bermuda Bay and Not Quite Navy Classic ink.
- Attach you bear to the Ice Floe and then the Ice Floe and bear to the water using your Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Glue your stars to the sky.
- Now attach your mats to one another. The Bermuda Bay circle will be sponged with Not Quite Navy. The top Basic Black large scallop circle will be sponged with Platinum Shimmer paint.
- Mat your inner Whisper White CS on to your Basic Black large scallop circle back piece and sponge with Bermuda Bay Classic ink. With your Stamp-a-ma-jig, stamp your greeting. Now punch holes with the smallest hole on your Crop-a-Dile (it is a 1/8″ hole punch) and place the blue rhinestone brad through the holes to hold the card together. You are done.

A Country Christmas with Stampin’ Up!’s Shimmer Paint
Posted: Friday, October 2nd, 2009 | Comments
I’m not sure if this really qualifies for a Country Christmas but whenever I see gingham I think “Country” *lol*. I want to thank all of you that took the time to leave a comment on the World Card Makers Tour post yesterday. I have to tell you that I’m still riding high! If you didn’t leave a comment there’s still time because comments close on the 4th of Oct. and then winners will be announced on the 6th of Oct.
Today’s card features Stampin’ Up!’s shimmer paints mixed with reinkers. This is a technique that you’ve seen me do several times before in the last few weeks, but I love the effect so much that I decided to use it on this card. To see exactly how I made the card you can check out the video below:
Directions:
-
Sponge the edges of a 3″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS in Old Olive Classic ink. Stamp the greeting in the top right corner in Basic Black Classic ink.
-
Mix a couple of drops of reinker with about 3 drops of Frost White Shimmer paint in the well of a plastic artist’s palette. use a sponge dauber to pick up your shimmery olive color and apply it to the tree stamp from Stampin’ Up!’s patterned pines level 1 hostess stamp set (from the Holiday Mini Catalogue).
-
Stamp the trees onto the 3″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS. Set aside to dry.
-
Sponge the edges of a 3-3/4″ x 5″ piece of Merry Moments DP with Old Olive Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge. Center and mat it onto a 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ Real Red card front.
-
Take a 1″ x 4-1/4″ piece of Old Olive CS (I used a scrap of textured Old Olive), and scallop one edge using the Scallop Edge punch.
-
Lay a 5-1/2″ piece of red gingham ribbon across the Old Olive CS strip, bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back and stick them down using Snail adhesive
-
Center the Whisper White CS piece along the right edge of the card and stick it to the card front. Stick on the Old Olive CS strip so that it slightly overlaps the left edge of the Whisper White CS piece.
-
Tie a 10″ piece of red gingham ribbon in a bow around the first piece. Position it at the top of the Old Olive CS strip.
-
“Faux” thread a large Old Olive button and a small Real Red button from Stampin’ Up!’s Playground Designer button collection with a coordinating sliver of CS. Stick the buttons to the card using mini glue dots. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up for my FREE 12 weeks of Christmas in the top right corner of my sidebar.
