Just Beachy à la “Cards” Magazine

SummerBeach

You may be wondering about the strange title of my post today.  Over the last 6 months I’ve really become a fan of the very trendy Cards Magazine – it’s a totally different style of card-making than what I’m used to as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator – and very different from what you see on a typical Stampin’ Up-product focused blog.  I’m not even sure how one would describe that style of card-making…the term eclectic comes to mind. Rather than a stamped image being the main focus of the cards, the card is composed a variety of different elements – patterned papers, die cuts, stickers, ribbons, buttons, brads, chipboard, letters…you name it!  So today I decided to try something totally fun and totally different from my normal style of stamping and card making….this is the end result.  It’s definitely different, but I really like it.

Here’s how I made it:

  1. Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of Tempting Turquoise Textured CS and fold it in half using a bone folder to create your card base.  Set aside for a moment.
  2. Mat a 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ piece of Tempting Turquoise DP from the Pink Flamingo collection onto a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Pumpkin Pie CS. Set aside for a moment.
  3. To create your sun you are going to need a chipboard circle and some chipboard leaves (these are from the On Board Batch of Blooms collection).  Place some Dotto adhesive onto a scrap piece of paper and stick your chipboard leaves to the Dotto, to keep them in place.  Completely cover the leaves in Summer Sun Craft ink and dry with a heat tool.  Stick your chipboard circle onto the less textured side of a scrap piece of So Saffron textured CS using Tombow Multi-Purpose adhesive.  Trim around the chipboard circle.
  4. Sponge the edges of the So Saffron chipboard circle with Summer Sun Classic ink.  Take a pencil and randomly mark small dots onto the circle, and then punch them out with a Crop-a-Dile.  Insert a So Saffron Brad into each of the holes you punched.
  5. Stick the leaves to the back of the So Saffron chipboard circle with Tombow – you want about half the leaf to be hidden behind the circle.  You may need to adjust the placement of the prongs of the brads to accomodate the leaves.
  6. Stick the sun you just created to your card front with Tombow.  Take the orange rick rack from the Ribbon Originals Pig Tails Collection, cut off three pieces of different lenghts (I think they were 1 1/2″, 2″ and 2 1/2″).  Staple one end of the rick rack along the left edge of the matted DP as shown.  Take the fish stamps from the Just Beachy set, and stamp in Basic Black ink in between the rick rack.  Stick down the free end of each piece of rick rack with a mini glue dot.
  7. Stamp another set of the fish onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Basic Black ink and color them in using the following Stampin’ Write marker colors: Tempting Turquoise, Summer Sun and Pumpkin Pie.  Cut them out as close to the image as you can and then stick them on top of the image you stamped onto the DP with a 2-way glue pen.
  8. Cut out the greeting “Summer” out of Basic Black CS using the Big Shot and the Stampin’ Up! Billboard Sizzlit Decorative Strip die.  Stick the letters onto the card with a 2-way glue pen.  Punch two holes using the Crop-a-dile, just to the left of the word “Summer” and insert 2 silver brads.  As a final touch I grabbed a dotted border from the retired Anchored rub-on collection and added it as shown in the picture.
  9. Center and attach to your card. That’s it!

I hope you have as much fun looking at this card as I had making it!

A Card 4 U

Posted: Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 | Comments (40)

hoppyday4ucard

Lately I’ve been really inspired to use up all the leftover bits and pieces from other projects that I’ve been saving up.  Today I dug into the DP and die cut adhesive scraps I had left over from the Hoppy Day Simply Scrappin’ Kit, some bits and pieces of other DPs and CS, my ribbon scraps and the mish mash of chipboard pieces that I end up with from my various On Board chipboard collections.

I have to say that I really love the way all the elements came together in this card – I also like the color combination – it’s a bit out of my color “comfort zone”.  That’s one of the reasons I love Stampin’ Up!’s designer (aka patterned) papers so much – they push me to combine colors that I might not normally gravitate towards on my own.

I’ve put together another little slide show for you to show you different angles of the card’s focal point- I’m having so much fun with these – I still have to tweak it a bit and work out a few kinks but it’s getting there!

hoppyday4ucard

Here’s how I made this card:

  1. Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of Real Red CS and fold in half using a bone folder to create the card base.  Set aside.
  2. Cut a piece of Whisper White Cardstock to 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″.  Using the Kiwi Kiss Circle DP from the Hoppy Memories Simply Scrappin Kit, cut 2 pieces that are 2 1/2″ x 4 5/8″ each.
  3. Attach your first piece of Kiwi Kiss Circle DP to the bottom of your Whisper White piece of cardstock, leaving 1/8″ border along the bottom and the sides.  Attach your second piece of Kiwi Kiss Circle DP to the top of your Whisper White piece of cardstock, also leaving a 1/8″ border. Your two pieces of DP will overlap.
  4. Next you will need the striped die cut border strip and the red die cut border strip with the alphabet.  Cut these two strips at 4 3/4″.
  5. Align the bottom of the striped border strip about 1 3/8″ up from the bottom edge of the Kiwi Kiss Circle DP.
  6. Align the top of the alphabet border strip about 1 6/8″ down from the top of the Kiwi Kiss Circle DP.
  7. Take your 5 1/2″ piece of Red Grosgrain Ribbon and lay across your card so that it covers the area between your two die cut border strips.  Fold the ribbon edges around the piece of Whisper White CS and stick the ends to the back using Snail Adhesive.
  8. Using the 1/16″ Circle Punch, punch two holes up in the top left corner of the card.  Insert two white 5/16″ Jumbo Brads. Center and mount your Whisper White CS mat to the front of your Real Red Card, using Snail Adhesive.  Set aside.
  9. Take the scallop circle chipboard, and leaving the center attached, cover it using Real Red Craft Ink.  (I used dotto to keep my chipboard stuck to my grid paper while I applied the ink directly from the stamp pad.)  While the ink is still wet, sprinkle with clear embossing powder, then heat with your heat tool.
  10. Cut a 2 1/8″ Kiwi Kiss circle and a 2″ Whisper White circle using the Circle Scissor Plus.  Mat the Whisper White circle onto the Kiwi Kiss circle and center it onto your scallop circle chipboard.
  11. Take the letter U from the Loads of Letters On Board Chipboard.  Using Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive, attach a scrap piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock to the front.  Trim out the letter using your scissors or a hobby blade.
  12. Take a star from the Essentials On Board Chipboard.  Stick a piece of scrap Kiwi Kiss Patterns DP in the same manner as you did in the previous step.
  13. Take the letter U that you previously covered and stick it to your Whisper White circle, positioning it near the right, using mini glue dots.
  14. Take the number 4 Adhesive Die cut from the Hoppy Memories Simply Scrappin’ Kit.  Place a Stampin’ Dimensional on the back and stick it to the Whisper White circle toward the left.  It’s okay for the “4″ and the “U” to overlap a little.
  15. Take the star chipboard that you previously covered and place two dimensionals on the back.  Stick that to the Whisper White circle near the bottom.
  16. Attach your completed chipboard embellishment to your card using mini glue dots - position it towards the right side of the card. You’re done!

Hoppy Memories Simply Scrappin’ Kit Card

TGIF!  I am so happy that Friday is finally here.  It’s been gray and rainy all day so I wanted to create something bright and cheerful. I had some scraps on my table left over from a project I created with the Hoppy Memories Simply Scrappin’ Kit.  In the “slide show” below you can see some close-ups of the various elements on the card.

animatedgiftake2

So what do you think of the slide show?  It’s something new I’ve been playing with.  I don’t have it totally down pat yet but I’m pretty excited about how it turned out for my first attempt. Anyways, here’s how I made my card:

  1. To create your card base, take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of Real Red CS (I used some textured CS that I had left from another project).   Fold it in half to create a 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ card base.  Set aside for a moment.
  2. Take a 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ piece of striped DP (from the Hoppy Memories Simply Scrappin’ Kit) and mat it onto a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Tempting Turqoise CS.  Take a 4″ piece of Kiwi Kiss polka dot ribbon from the Ribbon Originals Pig Tail collection, lay it across the top right corner of the matted DP, bring the ends around back and stick downwith Snail.
  3. Pierce two holes in the top left corner with your 1/16″ handheld circle punch and insert two silver 5/16″ jumbo brads.  Set aside for a moment.
  4. You are going to need two chipboard flowers – a large and a small from the On Board Batch of Blooms collection.  I placed some Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive on the chipboard pieces and stuck them to the REVERSE side of the DP patterns I wanted to use.  I then trim each one out with paper snips.  I used VersaMark and clear embossing powder on the flowers.
  5. Punch a hole through the center of each flower using your Crop-a-Dile.  Position your large flower towards the bottom right corner of your matted DP.  Use a paper piercer and foam mat to pierce a hole  at the center of the flower, through the matted DP.  Insert a large Pumpkin Pie Corduroy button through the center of the flower (through both layers of paper as well) and open the prongs on the back.
  6. Take the smaller flower, insert a small Kiwi Kiss Corduroy button through the center and open the prongs at the back.  Now mount your Kiwi Kiss flower to the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  7. Take the letters to spell  ”hi” from On Board Timeless Type.  Cover them in Basic Black Craft ink, sprinkle on Black EP and heat with heat tool.  Stick your letters to the card front with mini glue dots.
  8. Finally, mount the matted DP to the Real Red card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

I hope you liked the card.  I’ll be tweeting an additonal crafting tip for you, and I’ve put together a little feature on the wonderful world of chipboard on my Sunny Stampin’ Facebook page.

Cheep Talk Card Set with Decorated Tin

Posted: Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 | Comments (50)

cheeptalktincardsHappy Memorial Day weekend to all my US readers! Today I thought I’d share with you a card set I made using my Cheep Talk stamp set and the Good Morning Sunshine Designer Paper (DP). I figured that since this DP will be retiring in just over a month I’d better start looking for ways to use it up (and other retiring DP’s as well). Since I absolutely LOVE creating matched sets of projects, I decided to create a set of four 4″ x 4″ thank you notes with a coordinating card tin.  My tin is actually one of Stampin’ Up!’s Flower Fusion tins.  Once I had used up all the felt flowers, I saved the tin in order to alter it.

The nice thing about creating card sets like this one is that you don’t have to think too much about your design and layout.  I used the same design for all the cards and simply switched up the pattern of DP I used for each card.

The cards are fairly straightforward to make, the only thing that may bear explaining is how I created the sky & clouds background which you can see in the close-up picture below. I punched out two scalloped ovals out of Whisper White CS using my Scallop Oval punch.  I then stuck them to the Whisper White CS circle. Both “clouds” hung over the edge of the circle so I trimmed them.  I then took a wedge of Stamping Sponge and sponged all around the edge of the Whisper White CS circle and around the clouds with a small amount of Baja Breeze Classic ink.

The next picture shows you a close-up of the tin I decorated:

Back from Disney and Getting Ready for Father’s Day

Posted: Monday, May 18th, 2009 | Comments (59)

I’m baaack! Although it’s wonderful to be home and I missed our youngest two like crazy,  it was so hard to leave our vacation behind and come back to reality.  This trip we took was one that I had been dreaming about since before we became parents (over 10 years ago).  As most of you know, life for us has been anything but ordinary for the last year – it’s been filled with lots of stress and many difficult situations.  It felt so good to leave it all behind, even if only for a little while.  The “magic of Disney” really touched me and our family – yes it was crazy busy and yes we were totally exhausted at the end of each day – but through it all we enjoyed every moment of every day.  I feel mentally and emotionally relaxed and rejuvenated. I do have some pictures to share with you (I took about 1300 *lol*!)  but will share them a few at a time over the next few weeks.  First though I thought I’d share with you a card I created for my husband for Father’s Day.  This card is quite a different style for me - I was trying to achieve a vintage feel for my card and was trying to combine elements in a way that I’ve never tried before. Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Cut a 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ piece of Kraft CS.  Ink up the  ”To Do List” side of the It’s a Plan background stamp in Creamy Caramel in and stamp it onto your piece of Kraft CS.  Ink up the largest stamp from the Sense of Time stamp set (from the Occasions Mini Catalogue) in Creamy Caramel ink and stamp it in the top left corner of your Kraft CS piece.
  2. Ink up the small gears stamp in Chocolate Chip Classic ink, stamp it off on a scrap of paper (I use my grid paper) and then stamp it onto the Kraft CS.  Repeat one or two more times.  Ink up the “perfect” stamp from the Define your Life stamp set in Chocolate Chip ink, stamp it off once and then stamp it onto the Kraft CS in the top left corner, just inside the large clock stamp.
  3. Sponge around the edges of the Kraft CS with Creamy Caramel Classic ink and then use Stampin’ Up!’s cutter kit to distress around the edges of the Kraft CS. Mount the Kraft CS onto a 3 3/8″ x 4 5/8″ piece of Very Vanilla CS and then mount this onto a 3 5/8″ x 4 7/8″ piece of Chocolate Chp CS.
  4. Take the letter D from the On Board Lots of Letters chipboard collection and ink it up in Chocolate Chip craft ink.  Set aside to dry.  In the meantime, punch a label out of Creamy Caramel CS using the Curly Label punch.  Sponge the edges with Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Take a 1/2″ Chocolate Chip library clip and clip it onto the top of the label you punched.  Tie an 8″ piece of hemp twine in a bow around the top of the clip.  Mount your chipboard letter onto the label with a couple of mini glue dots.  Set aside for a moment.
  5. Punch out an oval from a scrap piece of Manchester DP using the Wide Oval Punch.  Sponge the edges of the Oval with Creamy Caramel Classic ink, and then brush the edges onto a Chocolate Chip ink pad.   Ink up the small gears stamp from the Sense of Time Stamp set in Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Stamp off once and then stamp it onto the wide oval.  Repeat if desired.
  6. Die cut a letter ”a” and a letter “d” out of Chocolate Chip CS using your Big Shot and the Naturally Serif Sizzlit Decorative Strip die.  Stick them to the wide oval using a 2-way glue pen.
  7. Die cut a swirl from Chocolate Chip CS using the Swirls Scribbles die and your Big Shot. Arrange and then stick to the back of the wide oval using 2-way glue.  Now stick the wide oval to the bottom right of your Kraft CS piece.  Stick the label with the letter “d” onto your card – to stick it I placed a mini glue dot on the underside of the clip and then two Stampin’ Dimensionals (one on top of the other) at the bottom (on the back) of the label.
  8. Now stick your matted Kraft CS piece to your Baja Breeze card front (a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of CS folded in half).  You’re done! Below I have a close up of the label portion of the card:

Okay, and now for a few pictures of our trip.  Our trip started with a drive to Ottawa (about a 6 hour drive) to pick up my niece Naomie (Soph’s daughter).  Since Soph and her family live in Petawawa - which has no major airport – we arranged to pick up Naomie at my parent’s house in Ottawa, and then leave the next day from the Ottawa International airport.  We arrived at my parent’s place at about 1 am and were so wired that we weren’t able to fall asleep until about 2 am.  Since our flight left at 7 am and we had to be at the airport 2 hours before, that meant we had to get up at 4 am and then leave my parent’s house by 4:30 am. As I’m sure you can imagine, we were pretty beat! The picture below is one of the first pictures I took when we arrived at the Orlando airport.  You can see our three oldest plus my niece Naomie (she’s the one on the far right).  The kids were so excited about being in Florida that they were fighting over who got to pull the luggage.  At various points each one of them took a turn.

This next picture is a quick one I took of the Disney Magical Express.  The nice thing about staying on a Disney resort is that they arrange all the transportation for you. Also, it kind of sets the “tone” and gets you all excited about the adventure to come. It was about a half hour bus ride from the airport to the resort.

For our trip I booked rooms at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  You can sort of get an idea of what the lodge looks like from the picture below.  It was absolutely spectacular.  The decor was kind of rustic with a real African feel to it.

The picture below gives you a bit of an idea of what the inside looks like.

We booked two adjoining rooms – one of them had two Queen beds in it and the kid’s room had a set of bunk beds and a Queen bed.  As I’m sure you can guess the top bunk was in high demand so the kids worked out a system whereby they rotated beds each night and each one took a turn in the top bunk.

The best part of that hotel and THE reason we booked it was because of the Savannah view.  Each room had a balcony, and when we walked out onto the balcony, the first thing we saw about 15-20 feet away from our balcony was this:

In addition to giraffs there were zebras, ostriches and a few other animals (their names escape me at the moment). By the time we finished unpacking and eating it was already 7 pm and we were pretty tired, but didn’t want to go to bed quite yet, so we hoped on one of the Disney buses and went to Downtown Disney.  Of course the first thing we saw when we got to downtown Disney was a little splash pad – which of course the kids made a beeline for:

After that, we headed over to an incredibly large Toy Store, but on our way, the kids said hi to Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum:

Of course the kids HAD to give us their best poses *lol*! One of the things that seems to be really big at Disney is Mr. Potato Head.  There was every type of Mr. Potato Head imaginable and of course named according to the character they represented.  At pretty much every park, at least one of the stores would have a Potato Head play area – where you could make up your Potato Heads. They also have something really neat which is that you pay a flat fee for a box and then you fill it with whichever Potato Head pieces you want – as many as the box can hold.  The only stipulation is that the box has to close.

Although you would think the kids were way beyond Mr. Potato Head – they had a Potato Head Clone Trooper an Potato Head Darth Vader which by the end of the trip we ended up getting for each of the boys. You can see a picture of the Clone Troopers in the picture below – I took this picture on our last night at Disney.

We left Downtown Disney at about 9:30 pm and headed back to the hotel.  That was the end of Day 1.  I’ll share a few pictures from Day 2 of our trip on Wednesday.  Don’t worry though – there won’t be as many *lol*!

Because this post is already long enough, I’ll keep you in suspense one more day and draw the names of the Soft Summer Class Planner winners tomorrow.
