Stampin’ Technique Week: Shimmer Paint Part 4: Create your own Shimmer Mist & Spray a Masked Image
Posted: Friday, September 18th, 2009 | Comments
Rather than my regular Friday Fun Folds post today I thought I’d continue on with my Stampin’ Technique Week using Stampin’ Up!’s new shimmer paints. With this being a new product in the Holiday Mini I figured that now is probably the time to show you guys as many different techniques as I can. I’ll be back to my regular Friday Fun Folds video next week.
Today’s card is actually very simple, and in real life looks stunning. Once again the camera just doesn’t adequately capture the beautiful shimmer.
Here’s how I made the card:
-
Take an empty spray bottle and put 1 oz (~30 ml) of 99% Rubbing Alcohol into the bottle. Add 15 drops of Champagne Mist shimmer paint. Add 15 drops of Soft Suede reinker. Shake really well to mix.
-
You will need a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of acetate (I bought mine from the office supply store – I use those to create my masks rather than Stampin’ Up!’s. I like to save Stampin’ Up!’s acetate sheets for my projects because they are much higher quality, sturdier and more clear than the acetate from the office supply store).
-
Die cut Stampin’ Up!’s Tulipz die out of the acetate sheet to create a mask.
-
Lay a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Very Vanilla CS onto a paper towel. Lay the acetate mask over the Very Vanilla CS.
-
Shake up your shimmer mist very well and then spray onto your masked cardstock. Keep spraying until you get your desired depth of color. My CS was quite saturated with the shimmer mist, but because the rubbing alcohol I used was such a high concentration it did not buckle the CS at all. You would have never known that the paper was doused with a liquid.
-
Let your CS dry. Stamp your greeting from All Holidays in the center of the Very Vanilla CS using Soft Suede Classic ink.
-
Sponge the edges of the Very Vanilla CS piece with Soft Suede Classic ink. Mat the Very Vanilla CS piece onto a 5″ x 5″ piece of Soft Suede CS.
-
Pierce a hole in each corner of the Very Vanilla CS. Insert an Antique Brass brad into each hole and open up the prongs on the back.
-
Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of textured Very Vanilla CS and fold it in half with a bone folder. Sponge the edges of the card front with Soft Suede and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
-
Center and stick the matted image to the card front. You’re done!

Stampin’ Technique Week: Shimmer Paint Part 2 – Tinting Shimmer Paint with Reinkers & Using it Direct to Stamp
Posted: Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 | Comments
Today there are actually going to be three blog posts but spaced out because my time has been, and still is, all chopped up today. Soph & her family have been visiting with us since Saturday. With the rush of the Sept. 14th deadline for getting my Stamp Classes by Email and Class Planners to subscribers over, today we decided to take a day “off” work and drive into Toronto for some shopping. We had a fantastic time! The only downside is that I hadn’t planned on doing quite as much shopping as I did! The problem of course, is that when you get me into a crafting-related store my willpower turns to mush *lol*
In this first post I’m going to share with you another fun technique you can do with shimmer paint. In the video below I show you how to tint Stampin’ Up!’s frost white shimmer paint with re-inkers. This is such a fun technique and the resulting colors are absolutely gorgeous. I used a 2:3 ratio of re-inker to shimmer paint. So about 2 drops of reinker to three drops of the shimmer paint. The best thing is that with this technique I now have at least 48 colors of shimmer paint now available to me….well actually more because as you’ll see in the video, you can mix colors of reinker to get new colors. I mixed Summer Sun and Pumpkin Pie reinkers to get the beautiful tangerine color you see on the flower.

It’s really too bad that the camera can’t adequately pick up the shimmer because in real life it just looks so beautiful. What I was surprised at was how intense the colors were, even though they were mixed with a white paint.
Here’s how I made the card:
- Take a 3″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS and punch along one 4″ side using Stampin’ Up!’s spiral punch. Sponge the edges of the Whisper White CS with Tempting Turquoise Classic ink and a wedge of Stamping Sponge.
- Stamp the Good Friend greeting along the bottom of the Whisper White CS piece using Basic Black Classic ink. Set aside for a moment.
- Take a small artist’s palette (from the dollar store) and place two drops of Tempting Turquoise re-inker in one well. In the second well add one drop of Summer Sun reinker and one drop of Pumpkin Pie reinker (this will create a tangerine color). Add three drops of Stampin’ Up!’s frost white shimmer paint into EACH well. Mix each color with it’s own paintbrush (from the dollar store) or a toothpick.
- Take a sponge dauber, dab it into the Tempting Turquoise shimmer paint and then dab it onto the bird image from the Good Friend stamp set. Stamp it onto a scrap of Whisper White CS. Set aside to dry.
- Ink up the beak and the flower in the same way using the tangerine color and stamp them onto a scrap of Whisper White CS. Ink up the bird’s legs with the sponge dauber and tangerine color and stamp them onto the 3″ x 4″ Whisper White CS piece. Position the legs so that it looks like the bird is standing on the greeting.
- Take the images you stamped on the scrap of Whisper White CS and cut them out using your paper snips, being sure to leave a small white border around them.
- Lay the bird on a foam mat. Pierce a hole through the eye using a paper-piercing tool. Insert a black brad from the Vintage Brads collection. Mount them to the Whisper White CS piece using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Taken with Teal CS and fold it in half using your bone folder. Randomly stamp the sparkle image from the Good Friend stamp set in VersaMark ink over the top half of the card front.
- Center and mat a 3″ x 4 1/8″ piece of Kaleidoscope DP along the bottom of the card front.
- Place a small amount of Snail adhesive on the center of the card front along the edge of the DP. Take an 8″ piece of Pumpkin Pie Striped Grosgrain ribbon and wrap it around from behind the card front and stick the ribbon ends to the Snail adhesive on the card front (see video for clarification).
- Stick the Whisper White CS piece to the card front on a slight angle using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Take the stamped flower and pierce a hole through the center using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat. Insert a small corduroy Pumpkin pie brad. Stick it to the card front as shown in the picture using a Stampin’ Dimensional. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
Here’s a couple of shimmer-paint related tips:
Tip 1: If you have very small containers (about the size of our glitter containers or smaller which you can purchase at most dollar stores) you can actually mix up your shimmer paint colors in them and then save the excess to use later.
Tip 2: Clean the shimmer paint off of your stamps using baby wipes FIRST and then clean them with your Stampin’ Scrub and Stampin’ Mist. Whatever you do, don’t let the paint (in particular the platinum shimmer paint) sit on your stamp for too long as the longer it sits the harder it is to clean off.
Tip 3: Always shake your bottle well between every use.

Just Because I Care
Posted: Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 | Comments
It’s so funny to me sometimes how cards end up coming together. I saw a card in a Papercrafts magazine (not the most recent issue, but the one before that) that had flowers that had been either punched or die cut (not sure which) from a newsprint-type paper, and each flower had a button in the middle. I thought it would be fun to try and do something similar especially because Stampin’ Up! now has a newsprint-type pattern as part of their new Night & Day Specialty Designer Paper collection. I had planned on using the Bashful Blue, Pretty in Pink and Certainly Celery buttons from the Sherbet Designer Button collection and creating a nice soft card. Somehow though, as the card came together I found that it looked too washed-out. As I played around with different color combos this is what emerged – totally opposite from the look I had initially been going for *lol*.
Here’s how I made my card:
-
Cut a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Basic Black CS and fold it in half with your bone folder. Set it aside for a moment.
-
Cut a 5 1/8″ x 4 3/8″ piece of Pumpkin Pie DP and scallop the bottom edge with the Scallop Edge punch. Pierce a hole in the center of each scallop using a paper-piercing tool and foam mat.
-
Stamp your greeting in the bottom right corner of the Pumpkin Pie DP with Basic Black ink. I used a greeting from Best Yet – a retired level 1 hostess set (and my favorite greeting set by far).
-
Take a 7″ piece of striped Pumpkin Pie grosgrain ribbon and lay it across the top of the Pumpkin Pie DP about 1/4″ down from the top edge. Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the DP and stick them down using Snail adhesive.
-
Mat the Pumpkin Pie CS piece onto your Basic Black card. Take a 4 1/2″ piece of the ribbon and tie it in a knot around the first piece. Slide the knot so that it is towards the left side of the card.
-
Die cut a swirl out of Basic Black CS using the Swirly Sizzlit Decorative Strip die and your Big Shot. Position the swirl on your Pumpkin Pie CS on an angle and stick down with 2-way glue.
-
Punch a flower out of the newsprint-type pattern of DP from the Night and Day Specialty DP collection using the 5-petal flower punch. Die cut two more flowers out of the same DP with your Big Shot – I used the Stampin’ Up! Birds & Blooms Sizzlit 4-pack die for one flower and the Birds with Leaves and Flower die for the other flower.
-
Use the Boho Blossoms flower punch to punch out the two smaller flowers out of Basic Black CS. Center the 2 smaller flowers on two of the newsprint flowers using 2-way glue.
-
Pierce a hole in the center of the two flowers onto which you glued the small black flowers. Insert a small Pumpkin Pie corduroy brad into the center of one and a large orange rhinestone brad into the center of the other. Take a small orange button from the Sherbet Designer Button collection, create the look of “faux” thread with a sliver of Basic Black CS and then stick it to the center of the third flower with a mini glue dot.
-
Position and stick the flowers to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this card.

Get Fresh with Sushi!
Posted: Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 | Comments
Well I am so sorry for posting this late in the day!! This was my daughters first day back to school, and the whole day just got away from me! It has definitely been one of those non stop days, so this will have to be a fast post as I need to get to bed (no more sleeping in). Today’s punch tutorial is sushi and chopsticks with a dash of wasabi on the side. It was super easy to make and super fun. The topings are one of those things that you can add anything you want. Now hopefully no one will get offended by my caption/greeting. It is meant to eventually go to my husband who loves sushi among other things. Oh and just to let your know my inspiration was from a die that featured Japanese Cultural themes.
Tutorial:

Start by punching out one Wide Oval Punch from Basic Black CS, one Small Oval Punch from Whisper White CS, and some 1/8″ circles (or the smallest you have) out of Ruby Red CS.

The Basic Black Wide Oval had the tips removed using the 1 3/8″ Square Punch.

Before punching the Ruby Red circles, I sponged the CS with a touch of Real Red. The Small Oval was sponged with a touch of Creamy Caramel and then run through the Big Shot with the mini dots from the Stampin’Up Backgrounds 1 embossing plates. The Black was sponged with a touch of Whisper White Craft ink using a Sponge Dauber. I do not recommend using any other type of sponge tool because you need control when working with small pieces. If you notice the sponging on the Black piece, you will see that the Whisper White craft ink is kept light and only blended in to the Right hand side bottom and top. The texture plate that you run the Small Oval through will simulate the texture of the rice.

Here it shows the pieces glued together. The red circles were glazed (after gluing) with Crystal Effects. The Summer Sun mini rectangles were sponged with Creamy Caramel and a touch of Real Red. Dazzling Diamonds was added to the yellow sushi. The red circles represent the salmon roe that you often find on Sushi, the Little yellow piece are some obscure vegetable.
To put the whole card together, you will need to punch Trio Flower Punch flowers out of Kiwi Kiss (or Old Olive) CS and sponge with Old Olive ink. These will be glued in an overlapping fashion to create the Wasabi. The Chopsticks were made by cutting Close to Cocoa CS at an angle and then sponging with Chocolate Chip Classic ink. A small bit of shading was traced around the Sushi using my Blender pen and a bit of Basic Grey Classic ink. The shading was kept very light. Hope you enjoy.
Hugs,

Oranges Punch Tutorial
Posted: Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 | Comments
Well I am back again this week, much later in posting than I had anticipated. I got back home late last night and have been trying to get my house in order, unpack, take care of kids, do groceries, cook the meals and still find time to do the photo’s and post for this week’s punch tutorial. Thankfully though I have managed to get it out, and I hope you like it as much as I do. For those of you who don’t know, I have a thing for food images. It may have something to do with the colors or textures, or just plain that I love good food. So I am tickled pink to come up with some fruity images. You may have to suffer along with me as I do a few different fruits in the coming weeks. What brought this on? Maybe its that we have finally been getting some proper summer weather, the type that brings to mind lazy days and ripe juicy fruits hanging in the trees. Now I don’t have any oranges growing anywhere remotely close to here, but since I love to eat them, and I love to look at the meat of the fruit in the sunlight I decided to do this as my project for this week. The outside says “You“, and the inside says “are my main squeeze“. Other orangy sentiments might be: ” you are the orange of my eye“, “If this was the last orange, I would share a slice with you“, “Orange you Sweet“, “Orange you Cute“. If you can think of any more then please share them with me, I am always looking for new sentiments.
Tutorial:

To start off, you will need 2 circles punched out with your 1 3/4″ punch from Pumpkin Pie textured CS (cut one of the Pumkin Pie circles in half) Next you will punch out 1 circle from your 1 3/8″ circle punch from Apricot Appeal CS (cut this in half). Lastly you will punch out 2 Kiwi Kiss (or Old Olive) circles with your 1 1/4″ punch. Sponge the 2 Pumkin Pie circles with : Dusty Durango (leaving a small amount of one side bare), Ruby Red (putting it over the Durango but not as far out), Bravo Burgundy (just the edge to add the darkest shadow area) and then a touch of Apricot Appeal Craft ink to the lightest side to create the highlight).

Take your two green 1 1/4″ circles and create leaves by placing them back in the circle punch and cutting them as shown above. When your two leaves are created, you can sponge with Garden Green.

Place a dot in the center of your half of Apricot Appeal using a regular graphite pencil.

Cut the half circle into three triangles making sure that each point meets at the dot that you created in the center. This will help prevent any wonkiness in the triangles.

Glue the triangles to the half circle of Pumpkin Pie. You could also do a whole slice of orange by following the above mentioned steps for a whole circle. You are now ready to assemble the image. You can use a white gel pen to add highlights and also to add that white center area which oranges have when you slice them. The branch if you want to add it was made with Chocolate Chip CS and the Birds and Branches Sizzlits Decorative Strip Die. The orange wedge in the card was popped up on a Stampin’ Dimensional. You could add orange glitter to each of the segments. I would probably use Dazzling Diamonds colored with Pumkin Pie or Apricot Appeal so that it has a more transparent look.
