Tidings of Joy Card featuring Candy Cane Specialty DP & the Word Play stamp set

Posted: Monday, December 6th, 2010 | Comments (12)

Today’s card is a super simple Christmas card in my favorite non-traditional combination of Christmas colors (pink and red).  It was inspired by THIS card by Maile Bells. I found her blog about 6 months ago and absolutely love her clean and simple style, her unique layouts and the fun little ways she embellishes her cards.  Here’s how today’s card was made:

  1. Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Pink Pirouette CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card.
  2. Take a 6″ piece of Real Red satin ribbon, cut a fish tail in one end, and then stick it to a 2″ x 5 1/2″ piece of ornament-patterned DP (from Stampin’ Up!’s Candy Cane Christmas DP collection). The fish tail end should be about 1/8″ up from the bottom.  The other end of the ribbon should be tucked over the top edge of the DP and stuck to the back with SNAIL adhesive.  set aside for a moment.
  3. Die cut a circle out of Whisper White CS using the Circles #2 die and your Big Shot (the circle is approx 2″ in diameter).
  4. Stamp the “Tidings of Comfort and Joy” greeting from Stampin’ Up!’s Word Play stamp set onto the Whisper White CS circle.  Color in the ornament with Real Red and Pink Pirouette Stampin’ Write markers. Add some Dazzling Diamonds glitter using a 2-way glue pen.
  5. Take a scrap of Real Red CS and punch out a 1 3/4″ circle.  Slide the Real Red CS with the punched circle into the 2 3/8″ scalloped circle punch, and center the already punched circle in the window of the scalloped circle and then punch.  You will have a scalloped frame.
  6. Glitter up the scalloped frame with red glitter (use VersaMark and Heat and Stick powder to apply it).
  7. Center and stick the scalloped circle frame over the greeting using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Stick the whole thing to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.

Candy Cane Greetings

Posted: Monday, November 29th, 2010 | Comments (18)

I hope all my American friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving (I know you celebrated last week – but we forgot to make mention of it).  Today I wanted to share with you a super graphically simple card I created using the Candy Cane Christmas Specialty DP.  Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Cut a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Real Red CS, and fold it in half with a bone folder to create a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card.  Set it aside for a moment.
  2. Cut a 1 1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS and stamp the greeting in Basic Black Classic ink.
  3. Take a 2″ x 4″ strip of Real Red CS and create a scalloped border using Stampin’ Up!’s slit punch – please note that Stampin’ Up! retired this in the last catalogue, but I still use it because they don’t have a border punch with a bigger scallop like this.  If you don’t have the slit punch, you could punch out 1/2″ or 3/4″ circles out of Real Red CS and then stick them to the back of the Whisper White CS so that about 1/2 the circle hangs below the bottom edge.  This is a faux scalloped border.
  4. Stick the Whisper White CS strip to the scalloped border piece sot hat about 3/8″ of the border hangs below the bottom edge of the Whisper White CS.
  5. Stick the Whisper White CS to  1″ x 4″ piece of Real Red CS, so that the Real Red CS strip shows about 1/8″ above the TOP edge of the Whisper White CS.
  6. Place a medium clear rhinestone brad at the center of each scallop (from Stampin’ Up!’s basic rhinestone collection).
  7. Take a 1″ piece of Real Red Satin ribbon and fold it in half.  Hold the fold in place with a mini glue dot.  Repeat with a 1″ piece of 1/4″ Real Red grosgrain ribbon.  Stick the two pieces of ribbon to the back left of the greeting as shown in the main picture above, using 2 mini glue dots.
  8. Thread two buttons with Blusing Bride CS and stick them as shown with a mini glue dot for each.  Please note that the buttons are not from Stampin’ Up! – they are from my own stash.
  9. Stick the greeting to a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Candy Cane DP with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I positioned it about 1 1/4″ down from the top edge.
  10. Center and stick the Candy Cane DP piece to the Real Red card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.

Poinsettia Peace on Earth Card

Posted: Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 | Comments (11)

Today’s card was a bit of an experiment – I wanted to see if I could create a Poinsettia using Stampin’ Up!’s Island Floral die.  After a bit of experimentation, I finally ended up with a result I like. Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of textured Cherry Cobbler CS and fold it in half using a bone folder to create a 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ card.
  2. Cut a 5″ x 5″ piece of Crumb Cake CS and sponge the edges with Soft Suede Classic ink and a wedge of a stamping sponge.
  3. Center and stick a 3″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Deck the Halls DP (the Cherry Cobbler color with the script pattern) along the left edge of the Crumb Cake CS, leaving an even border at the top, left and bottom.
  4. Center and stick a 2″ x 4 3/4″ piece of Deck the Halls DP (the holly pattern) along the right edge of the Crumb Cake CS, leaving an even border at the top, right and bottom.
  5. Lay a 5 1/2″ piece of Cherry Cobbler seam binding across the seam between the two piece of DP. Bring the ends of the seam binding around to the back of the CS and stick them down with SNAIL adhsive.
  6. Center and stick the Crumb Cake CS piece to the card front with SNAIL adhesive.
  7. Using your Circle Scissors Plus and glass mat, cut a 3 1/4″ circle out of Crumb Cake CS. Sponge the edges with Soft Suede Classic ink.  Cut a second circle out of Deck the Halls Chocolate Chip colored DP that is 3″ in diameter, again using the Circle Scissors Plus.
  8. Center and stick the Chocolate Chip DP circle to the Crumb Cake CS circle with SNAIL adhesive. Set aside for a moment.
  9. Die cut four sets of the three petal flower from the Island Floral die out of Cherry Cobbler CS using your Big Shot.
  10.  Sponge each of the flowers with Soft Suede Classic ink.
  11. Cut each of the petals in half, but not straight across, you want to cut each half on a rounded inward angle.
  12. Spritz the flowers with water one at a time using a mini mister, and gently scrunch them.  Once all flowers are scrunched and then opened up, lay them inside the Color Catcher and spritz them with Gold Glow Smooch Spritz.
  13. Die cut three leaves out of Always Artichoke CS. Spritz them with water and scrunch them to give them a distressed look.  Open the leaves back up.  Spritz them with Gold Glow Smooch Spritz if desired (I didn’t).
  14. Layer and stick the flowers one on top of the other, to the center of the DP circle using Tombow liquid adhesive.  Make sure you offset the petals.  Tuck the leaves underneath the flower and stick them down with mini glue dots.
  15. Use some yellow peel and stick rhinestones to create the center of the poinsettia (I just used rhinestones from the dollar store).
  16. Cut a 3/4″ x 4″ piece of Crumb Cake CS. Stamp the Peace on Earth greeting onto it in Early Espresso Classic ink.  Cut a fishtail at both ends using your paper snips.  Sponge around the edges with Soft Suede Classic ink.
  17. Use the edge of your paper snips to gently round the greeting flag.  Stick it to the card front with mini glue dots.  Place a small yellow rhinestone on either side of the greeting.
  18. Stick the DP circle with the Poinsettia to the card front – centered over the seam binding and just above the greeting, using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed today’s card.

Candy Cane Christmas Card

Posted: Monday, November 22nd, 2010 | Comments (8)

Today’s card is a colorful and somewhat whimsical card I created using one of my favourite of Stampin’ Up!’s Christmas-patterned DP – Candy Cane Christmas.  Although pink isn’t necessarily everyone’s favourite color for Christmas – I personally love it.   Here’s how I made today’s card:

  1. Cut a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ piece of Pear Pizzazz CS and dry emboss it with the Square Lattice embossing folder and your Big Shot.  Trim this piece so that it is 4″ x 5 1/4″.
  2. Lay a 4″ piece of Pretty in Pink Satin ribbon across a 3″ x 4″ piece of Christmas Tree patterned paper, about 1 1/2″ up from the bottom edge of the DP.  Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the DP and stick them down with SNAIL adhesive.
  3. Center and stick a 3″ x 4″ piece of Christmas tree patterned DP to a 4″ x 4″ piece of blue snowflake DP using SNAIL adhesive.  Center and stick this piece to the Pear Pizzazz textured CS with Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive.  I find that SNAIL adhesive does not work as well with highly textured CS, and prefer to use Tombow.
  4. Center and stick the Pear Pizzazz CS to a Whisper White card front (created by folding a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Whisper White CS in half) using Tombow liquid adhesive. Set aside for a moment.
  5. Die cut a largesnowflake out of white felt using the Northern Frost decorative strip die and your Big Shot.  Die cut a smaller snowflake out of texture Pink Pirouette CS.
  6. Lay the felt snowflake on a scrap piece of paper inside a cardboard box and spray it with a spray adhesive.  Dip the snowflake in Dazzling Diamonds glitter.
  7. Stamp the greeting from the Bells and Boughs stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White CS in Basic Black Classic ink.  Punch out with the scalloped oval die.  Sponge the edges with Pink Pirouette Classic ink and a sponge dauber.  Stick the label over the ribbon with 2 Stampin’ Dimensionals (to the left of the DP piece).
  8. Stick the glittered felt snowflake to the ribbon, to the right of the greeting with a hot glue gun.
  9. Thread a pink button from the Subtles collection with some silver cord (now retired – was a Stampin’ Up! product and can be purchased at most craft stores). Stick the button to the center of the Pink Pirouette CS snowflake with a mini glue dot, and then stick the pink snowflake to the felt snowflake with a hot glue gun (on the low setting).  You’re done!

Today I wanted to share with you all a fun and economical new series of tutorials that my sister and I are offering called Projects à la Carte – these are single project tutorials that will be priced between $3.95 and $8.95 Canadian (international orders welcome).  Each tutorial will include a written pdf handout (similar to our 12 Weeks of Christmas Handouts) and access to a private web page with a video you can view on how to make the project.  No supplies are included.

The first of the tutorials are these ultra-cute gift card holder ornaments.  I got the idea of the Christmas Ball one from a Paper Crafts Holiday magazine, and then the other two just kind of evolved from there.  Although it’s hard to tell from the picture, these ornaments are pretty big – the Christmas Ball is almost 4 1/2″ wide.  Below you can see how you tuck the gift card into each one.

They each have an opening on the side so that the gift card slides into the middle of the ornament.  When the gift cards are pushed all the way in, you can see them through the vellum on both the Christmas Ball and the Wreath.  On all of them, the card hangs out just a little from the side so that the recipient can easily grasp the card and pull it out.

When you look at the ornaments in my hand, you can get a general idea of the size.  For the Santa one, the tutorial includes a printable template for the mustache and the hat rim.

Each tutorial is $4.95, or you can purchase the bundle of three for $12.95.  If you’re interested please click HERE.  You’ll find the bundle offer at the bottom of each individual tutorial listing.

As I do with each new tutorial release, I’ll be giving away 2 free tutorials.  To enter, simply leave a comment in the comments section of this post.

I’ve gotta run for dinner, but I’ll be back a bit later to announce the winner of the swing fold album tutorial.

ETA (7:30 pm EST) - I’m back with the winners of the Swing Fold Album tutorial.  If you are one of the winners please email me at andrea@sunnystampin.com and be sure to put in the subject line – “Swing Fold Tutorial Winner”.  If you already purchased the tutorial, then you can substitute for any digital tutorial up to $22.95 value in my store www.sunnystampinstore.com.
