Another Father’s Day Card & a few Disney Day 3 pictures

img_30491

Today I thought I’d share another Father’s Day card with you – this time one that I made for my Father-in-law.  Even though Father’s Day is still quite far away, I try to get a jump start on it because I have a lot of Father’s day cards to make – one for my dad, my father-in-law, my grandpa, my husband and my brother-in-laws AND I like to may different cards.

My Father-in-law is absolutely amazing – he’s quite a handyman, and everytime he comes over, he always comes with his toolbox and looks fo things that need to be fixed.  This is such a stress-reliever for both my husband and I, because my husband is so busy with his job and with our kids that it leaves little time for handi-work. And it’s a stress-reliever for me, because it saves me all that nagging that might otherwise have to do to get things fixed *lol*!  When I sat down to make my card, I wanted to make something that would show him how much we appreciate his help – which is why Stampin’ Up!’s Totally Tool set was absolutely perfect!

Once again when planning my card design I deliberately chose products that I knew would be retiring at the end of June (i.e. the cardstock, the designer paper and the ribbon) - (1) because I LOVE them, and (2) because I want to use them before they’re officially gone. If you haven’t already, make sure you order yours SOON, because come end of June – they’re gone for good!

Today’s card is a 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ card.  I had to make my card that size because of the large chipboard star I chose as the focal point of my card.

img_3050

The most “complicated” aspect of the card is the chipboard star.  Here’s how I made the star:

  1. Take a 5 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ piece of textured Baja Breeze CS and fold it in half using your bone folder.
  2. You will now need a 2 1/2″ x 5″ piece of Parisian Breeze DP (the striped pattern) and a 3″ x 5″ piece of Parisian Breeze DP (the Baja Breeze plaid pattern).  Flip the striped DP over and place some Snail adhesive along the top edge of the DP.  Flip the DP back over, overlap it slightly with the plaid Baja DP and stick it down.  You want to create a 5″ x 5″ square with both patterns of DP.
  3. Take a 6″ piece of Chocolate Chip polka dot ribbon from the Ribbon Originals Valet collection.  Align the top edge of the ribbon with the top edge of the striped DP.  Bring the ends of the ribbon around to the back and stick down using Snail adhesive.   Stamp your greeting in the position shown in Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Set aside.
  4. To create the star, I took a scrap of Baja Breeze CS and stamped the stars from the Starring You stamp all over it in Baja Breeze ink.  I then applied a little Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive to my chipboard star and stuck it to the back of the CS.  Once the glue dried, I carefully cut the star out using my paper snips and then sponged the edges with Baja Breeze ink.
  5. I punched a 1 3/4″ circle out of Whisper White CS using Stampin’ Up!’s punch and sponged the edges with Baja Breeze as well.
  6. I stamped the saw from Totally Tool onto a scrap of white cs, colored it in with Chocolate Chip and Going Gray Classic inks and a blender pen, and cut it out.
  7. I stuck the saw onto the white CS circle and then stuck the letters “DAD” onto the circle with 2-way glue (the letters were cut using my Big Shot and the Billboard Sizzlit Decorative Strip die).
  8. I slipped a clip from Stampin’ Up!’s Clips Assortment Collection onto the white CS circle and then placed the circle onto the star and used a pencil to make a small dot to mark the placement of the hole I wanted to punch for my brad.  I then removed the white CS & clip, punched the hole with my Crop-a-Dile and then stuck the white CS circle (with clip) onto the star using Snail adhesive.
  9. I stuck my star to my DP, making sure to position it just below and to the right of the greeting as shown in the picture.
  10. I then took a paper piercer and poked a hole through the DP (I pierced through the hole that I had already punched on the star), and inserted my star brad.
  11. Lastly I mounted my DP to my card front.

I know it sounds like a lot of steps, but once you get going it doesn’t actually take that long.

And now a few more pictures from our third Day at Disney. I don’t actually have that many pictures to share because we spent the entire Day at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon – which is an enormous water park.

disneyday30011

Pretty much THE big highlight of Typhoon Lagoon is the giant wave pool which generates 6 foot waves.  You can see the wave pool from a distance in the snapshot below:

disneyday3002

For the safety of my camera, I put it away in a locker, fully intending to pull it out and take some pictures, but then was having so much fun in the wave pool and on the water slides that I totally forgot.  We did however return to Typhoon Lagoon later in the week and that time I did take pictures so I’ll show those when I get there.

We left typhoon lagoon at around 5 pm, headed back to our hotel, had dinner and then went to the Magic Kingdom to watch the Spectro parade and fireworks.  Below you can see a picture of the very first float in the parade.

disneyday3003

If you every go to Disney, you absolutely HAVE to watch their Spectro parade – it was absolutely SPECTACULAR.  All the floats were covered with thousands of tiny colored lights – and the floats are gorgeous.  We got there about an hour early so managed to get front row “seats”.  Once the parade was over, the fireworks started about 15 minutes laters.  Since we were right in the heart of the Magic Kingdom we figured it would be easier to stay and watch the fireworks than try to push our way out through the crowds.  The firworks were just as fantastic as the parade!  By the time we got back to our hotel room though it was after midnight.

So that’s the end of Disney Day 3. I’ll share more pictures of Disney Day 4 on Thursday. I’ll be back with another project and some Secret Comment Patrol winners tomorrow!

Photos from Day 2 of our Disney Trip & winners of Soft Summer class planner

Posted: Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 | Comments (35)

Sorry folks – no cards to share today – I had bits and pieces of things to handle that cropped up while we were away, so I had no time to get into my stamping studio.  I will however share some more Disney photos as promised and I will also announce the winners of the Soft Summer class planner.

Deciding which Disney theme park to visit first wasn’t as challenging as I thought it was going to be.  The kids unanimously agreed on the Magic Kingdom. It was the perfect day for it too – the sun was shining and there were no clouds in the sky.  Although the park looks crowded from the picture it actually wasn’t too bad – we never waited more than about 20-30 minutes for any one ride.

First stop was Tomorrowland and the first ride we took was the Buzz Lightyear ride.  On our way to the next ride, who did we run into but Buzz himself and then Stitch. Remember when I told you we took 1400 or so pictures of our trip?  Well can you believe that this is the ONLY one that has ALL of us in it?  How in the world did that happen?

Since we all went on pretty much every ride together, getting action pictures was really hard .  I did manage to quickly snap one of  Zach and Naomie on the rocket ride before it got going.  That was the ride that made me realize that I am not as young and adventurous as I used to be.  I was so thankful when that ride was over because all that spinning made me feel nauseous!   That was the LAST spinning-type ride that I went on – although I did ride (and enjoy) all the roller-coaster type rides.

One of the hands-down favourite rides was Splash Mountain – where you ride down the Mountain shown in the picture below, in a log – and of course get TOTALLY soaked!

Thankfully we dried off in time for our lunch at the Crystal Palace, which you can see below:

One of the really neat things about Disney is that you can eat “with” the Disney Characters.  During lunch at the Crystal Palace, the kids got to meet Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger and Piglet – and of course get their autographs and pose with them.  In the background of the picture you can kind of see the buffet.  It was quite amazing and definitely the best food of all the places we ate.

After lunch and more rides, as we wandered by the Sword in the Stone, the kids all had to try their hand at extracting it from the rock. After trying and failing individually, they decided to give it their best group effort.

Of course after that came MORE rides, until we eventually wandered into Toontown because we had heard that you can meet the princesses there.

Julia’s absolute favourite princess is Sleeping Beauty. In March we had taken the kids to a Disney on Ice show and go figure there was pretty much every princess EXCEPT Sleeping Beauty – Julia was devastated and left the show crying.  We consoled her by telling her that she would meet Sleeping Beauty at Disney World. So, from the moment we arrived at the Magic Kingdom Julia was looking for her. But as the day progressed, once again we had seen all the other princesses, but NO Sleeping Beauty – until we got to Toontown, and then all was right with the world *lol* Not only did she get to talk to Sleeping Beauty, she also got to talk to Cinderella and Belle.

At the end of a fun-filled 10 hour day, we said goodbye to the Magic Kingdom.  It was twilight when we left and so beautiful because all the buildings were lit up with thousands of tiny white lights.

So that’s the end of our second day at Disney.  I did try to restrain myself on the number of photos I posted, but it was hard lol* On Friday or Saturday I’ll post some pictures of Day 3 at Disney.

Okay, and now on to the winners of the Soft Summer Class.  Below I have posted the names of 5 lucky winners.  If you are one of the winners, please email me at andrea@demotodemo.com to claim your prize.  Make sure you put Soft Summer Class Winner in the subject line, and be sure to let me know which version you would like – the Stamp Class by Email or the Class Planner version.  If you don’t see your name there, don’t despair – within the next  2 – 5 days I’ll be announcing winners from the Secret Comment Patrol – that means that if you’ve been leaving comments on the posts here then you have a chance to win!

Hi Andrea,
I have subscribed for quite a while, but as of yet have not had the funds to purchase any of your wonderful project planners.
I so want this one, I think if I had everything professionally done like you do, maybe I could get a class going and raise some interest in our craft, thereby getting my business off the ground.

Even if I don’t win, I still appreciate our wonderful inspiration!

Blessings,
Beth

Back from Disney and Getting Ready for Father’s Day

Posted: Monday, May 18th, 2009 | Comments (59)

I’m baaack! Although it’s wonderful to be home and I missed our youngest two like crazy,  it was so hard to leave our vacation behind and come back to reality.  This trip we took was one that I had been dreaming about since before we became parents (over 10 years ago).  As most of you know, life for us has been anything but ordinary for the last year – it’s been filled with lots of stress and many difficult situations.  It felt so good to leave it all behind, even if only for a little while.  The “magic of Disney” really touched me and our family – yes it was crazy busy and yes we were totally exhausted at the end of each day – but through it all we enjoyed every moment of every day.  I feel mentally and emotionally relaxed and rejuvenated. I do have some pictures to share with you (I took about 1300 *lol*!)  but will share them a few at a time over the next few weeks.  First though I thought I’d share with you a card I created for my husband for Father’s Day.  This card is quite a different style for me - I was trying to achieve a vintage feel for my card and was trying to combine elements in a way that I’ve never tried before. Here’s how I made the card:

  1. Cut a 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ piece of Kraft CS.  Ink up the  ”To Do List” side of the It’s a Plan background stamp in Creamy Caramel in and stamp it onto your piece of Kraft CS.  Ink up the largest stamp from the Sense of Time stamp set (from the Occasions Mini Catalogue) in Creamy Caramel ink and stamp it in the top left corner of your Kraft CS piece.
  2. Ink up the small gears stamp in Chocolate Chip Classic ink, stamp it off on a scrap of paper (I use my grid paper) and then stamp it onto the Kraft CS.  Repeat one or two more times.  Ink up the “perfect” stamp from the Define your Life stamp set in Chocolate Chip ink, stamp it off once and then stamp it onto the Kraft CS in the top left corner, just inside the large clock stamp.
  3. Sponge around the edges of the Kraft CS with Creamy Caramel Classic ink and then use Stampin’ Up!’s cutter kit to distress around the edges of the Kraft CS. Mount the Kraft CS onto a 3 3/8″ x 4 5/8″ piece of Very Vanilla CS and then mount this onto a 3 5/8″ x 4 7/8″ piece of Chocolate Chp CS.
  4. Take the letter D from the On Board Lots of Letters chipboard collection and ink it up in Chocolate Chip craft ink.  Set aside to dry.  In the meantime, punch a label out of Creamy Caramel CS using the Curly Label punch.  Sponge the edges with Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Take a 1/2″ Chocolate Chip library clip and clip it onto the top of the label you punched.  Tie an 8″ piece of hemp twine in a bow around the top of the clip.  Mount your chipboard letter onto the label with a couple of mini glue dots.  Set aside for a moment.
  5. Punch out an oval from a scrap piece of Manchester DP using the Wide Oval Punch.  Sponge the edges of the Oval with Creamy Caramel Classic ink, and then brush the edges onto a Chocolate Chip ink pad.   Ink up the small gears stamp from the Sense of Time Stamp set in Chocolate Chip Classic ink.  Stamp off once and then stamp it onto the wide oval.  Repeat if desired.
  6. Die cut a letter ”a” and a letter “d” out of Chocolate Chip CS using your Big Shot and the Naturally Serif Sizzlit Decorative Strip die.  Stick them to the wide oval using a 2-way glue pen.
  7. Die cut a swirl from Chocolate Chip CS using the Swirls Scribbles die and your Big Shot. Arrange and then stick to the back of the wide oval using 2-way glue.  Now stick the wide oval to the bottom right of your Kraft CS piece.  Stick the label with the letter “d” onto your card – to stick it I placed a mini glue dot on the underside of the clip and then two Stampin’ Dimensionals (one on top of the other) at the bottom (on the back) of the label.
  8. Now stick your matted Kraft CS piece to your Baja Breeze card front (a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of CS folded in half).  You’re done! Below I have a close up of the label portion of the card:

Okay, and now for a few pictures of our trip.  Our trip started with a drive to Ottawa (about a 6 hour drive) to pick up my niece Naomie (Soph’s daughter).  Since Soph and her family live in Petawawa - which has no major airport – we arranged to pick up Naomie at my parent’s house in Ottawa, and then leave the next day from the Ottawa International airport.  We arrived at my parent’s place at about 1 am and were so wired that we weren’t able to fall asleep until about 2 am.  Since our flight left at 7 am and we had to be at the airport 2 hours before, that meant we had to get up at 4 am and then leave my parent’s house by 4:30 am. As I’m sure you can imagine, we were pretty beat! The picture below is one of the first pictures I took when we arrived at the Orlando airport.  You can see our three oldest plus my niece Naomie (she’s the one on the far right).  The kids were so excited about being in Florida that they were fighting over who got to pull the luggage.  At various points each one of them took a turn.

This next picture is a quick one I took of the Disney Magical Express.  The nice thing about staying on a Disney resort is that they arrange all the transportation for you. Also, it kind of sets the “tone” and gets you all excited about the adventure to come. It was about a half hour bus ride from the airport to the resort.

For our trip I booked rooms at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  You can sort of get an idea of what the lodge looks like from the picture below.  It was absolutely spectacular.  The decor was kind of rustic with a real African feel to it.

The picture below gives you a bit of an idea of what the inside looks like.

We booked two adjoining rooms – one of them had two Queen beds in it and the kid’s room had a set of bunk beds and a Queen bed.  As I’m sure you can guess the top bunk was in high demand so the kids worked out a system whereby they rotated beds each night and each one took a turn in the top bunk.

The best part of that hotel and THE reason we booked it was because of the Savannah view.  Each room had a balcony, and when we walked out onto the balcony, the first thing we saw about 15-20 feet away from our balcony was this:

In addition to giraffs there were zebras, ostriches and a few other animals (their names escape me at the moment). By the time we finished unpacking and eating it was already 7 pm and we were pretty tired, but didn’t want to go to bed quite yet, so we hoped on one of the Disney buses and went to Downtown Disney.  Of course the first thing we saw when we got to downtown Disney was a little splash pad – which of course the kids made a beeline for:

After that, we headed over to an incredibly large Toy Store, but on our way, the kids said hi to Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum:

Of course the kids HAD to give us their best poses *lol*! One of the things that seems to be really big at Disney is Mr. Potato Head.  There was every type of Mr. Potato Head imaginable and of course named according to the character they represented.  At pretty much every park, at least one of the stores would have a Potato Head play area – where you could make up your Potato Heads. They also have something really neat which is that you pay a flat fee for a box and then you fill it with whichever Potato Head pieces you want – as many as the box can hold.  The only stipulation is that the box has to close.

Although you would think the kids were way beyond Mr. Potato Head – they had a Potato Head Clone Trooper an Potato Head Darth Vader which by the end of the trip we ended up getting for each of the boys. You can see a picture of the Clone Troopers in the picture below – I took this picture on our last night at Disney.

We left Downtown Disney at about 9:30 pm and headed back to the hotel.  That was the end of Day 1.  I’ll share a few pictures from Day 2 of our trip on Wednesday.  Don’t worry though – there won’t be as many *lol*!

Because this post is already long enough, I’ll keep you in suspense one more day and draw the names of the Soft Summer Class Planner winners tomorrow.

You’re the Best!

Posted: Thursday, April 30th, 2009 | Comments (53)

Today is going to be a quick post.  It has been really crazy and busy around here.  Little Malachi has decided that the hours between 8:00 PM and 1:00 AM is the perfect time of night for a party.  As a result my prime working time has been taken away lol.  I am hopeing that this improves in the next few months.  Today’s card is a die cut card.  I am absolutely in love with my Big Shot and dies.  You can get so many fun looks, and best of all, I don’t have to spend time cutting out a multitude of little pieces!    I am afraid that you may see a lot of it in the next while lol.

  1. Cut out cupcake top twice, once from So Saffron and once from Rose Red DP.  Take the so Saffron top and sponge with Mustard and Rose Red Classic ink, sponge the Rose Red top with Rose Red ink and then cut it so that it looks like a touch of icing on the top.  Adhere to the top of the So Saffron cupcake top.  Take your white gel pen and add highlights along the top.
  2. Cut your cupcake bottom with To the Nines DP.  Sponge with Chocolate Chip ink.  Cut the candle from Certainly Celery CS and the flame from So Saffron.  Sponge the candle with old Olive and the flame can be highlighted with Rose Red marker.  Glue the flame to the candle.
  3. Cut out a circle with your circle scissor plus and adhere the cupcake base to it.  Add a greeting with Rub-on.  Pop up the cupcake top and glue the candle down.  Add stitching all around with Chocolate Chip marker.  Take flower from your pretties kit, sponge with Rose Red ink and then use rhinestone brad to place down in corver of circle.
  4. Cut out Scallop circle from your Bigz die Scallop Circle #2  Adhere cupcake circle down and add decoration with white gel pen.
  5. Take your Satin ribbon, die with Creamy Caramel sponging and set aside.
  6. Sponge your Vanilla mat wih Creamy Caramel and Rose Red ink. then stamp flourish from Baroque Motifs with Chocolate Chip ink.  Cut fancy scallop from punch and then sponge Certainly Celery piece with Old Olive.  Put the whole card together.

Today’s post is a very difficult one for me to write. Although things have kept going as normal on my blog these last few days, life has taken a series of heartbreaking turns for our family.  The posts that you read yesterday and the day before were actually written on Tuesday and then timed to be released on Wednesday and Thursday.  Today is the first day that I’m actually back and writing this post in real-time.

As you know, my grandmother was in the hospital and had been doing quite poorly.  She seemed to rally on Monday, and things appeared to be getting a bit better.  On Tuesday however, she seemed a bit worse. But we had seen her that way before and were hopeful that as with all the other times, she would pull through. We did however call my dad in Ottawa to let him know.  He decided to drive up on Tuesday night.  I left the hospital with my grandfather when visiting hours ended at 8 pm and we came home.  As I waited for my dad to arrive, I was in my stamp room, stamping and blogging to keep my mind occupied. My dad arrived at 12:30 am, and we stayed up talking for about an hour, making plans to go in and see my grandmother in the morning. At  2:40 am we received a phone call from the hospital that my grandmother had passed away. My father, grandfather and I went to the hospital immediately. My poor father is heartbroken because he never had a chance to see her before she died, and he is tormented by the thought that she died alone.  My grandfather – that was agonizing to watch. My grandmother was his sun and moon.  Every moment of every day for him revolved around my grandmother.  Every time she went in the hospital, he was there sitting by her side for 10 hours out of every day.  At home, he was by her side always – day and night – helping her as needed.  As for me – my grandmother has always been more like a mother to me.  She practically raised me in my early years as my parents were working ’round the clock to establish their business.  I lived with her throughout University, and after I got married, as my kids came, she and my grandfather helped us more than you can possibly imagine.  In a lot of ways, her passing has been worse for me than when my mother passed away from cancer 10 years ago.  Although we knew that she was gradually declining, her passing still came as a shock.  I feel in a lot of ways like my dad.  When I saw her on Tuesday she was sedated, on Morphine, and although her eyes briefly flickered open, I don’t think she was aware we there. We got home around 4:30 am, got my grandfather settled and tried to catch a few hours sleep ourselves. In the morning, as I was calling my grandfather for breakfast, he collapsed and we had to call 911.  He’s been in intensive care since Wednesday.  Thankfully though it looks like physically he’s going to pull through.  Emotionally though it’s going to be a really long hard road ahead of us.Anyways, you may be wondering why I’m sitting here blogging and how I could possibly even think of finding time to stamp at a time like this.  Frankly, it’s because it keeps my hands and my mind occupied when all the other “tasks” that I need to do to keep the house and the family going, are done.  When I stop and sit, even for a moment I feel as though my heart were being ripped out of my chest.  Although I know from going through something similar when my mom died, I will eventually need to find time to grieve, I just don’t think I can cope with it right now. When I do give in to tears, I just can’t stop. But when I stamp, I put on my music, and lose myself in what I am doing. I don’t have to think, I can just create, and for a short period of time at least, I can feel peace. So yes, I am going to keep going on my comment a day contest, and yes you are going to see me keep stamping and posting.    The card that I’m sharing with you today is actually one that I made in August when I first received my Big Shot.   I had been planning on sharing it around that time, but then with the new baby and the renovations on our home, I never got around to it.  Since I haven’t stamped for the last few days I thought I’d share it with you today.

This card has a color combination that is very atypical for me:  Summer Sun, Real Red and Pumpkin Pie paired with Kiwi Kiss.  The background was done using the Faux Silk Technique. I then created all the flowers by stamping the images from the Eastern Blooms stamp set in the three above mentioned colors. I then cut them out, added the colored rhinestone brads to the centers and layered them onto my card.  The large yellow flower is actually double-layered with a Dimensional in between (you can see it from the picture below).  The “vines” which are intertwined with the flowers were created using the swirls scribbles Big Shot Die and Kiwi Kiss ink.

The dimensions are pretty straightforward: the base of the card is 4 1/4″ x 11″ folded in half to create a 4 1/4′ x 5 1/2″ card.  The Real Red Card mat is 4″ x 5 1/4″.  The Whisper White onto which I placed the stamped tissue paper (for the Faux Silk technique) is 3 3/4″ x 5″.  I don’t have the heart to right more details about the card right now, but at some point in the near future, I’ll do a post showing you how to do the faux silk technique.

Today’s is the last post for this week in the “Comment a Day” contest.  I won’t be posting over the weekend, but will be back on Monday with another post.  The last day of the “Comment a Day” contest will be on Tuesday, and I’ll be announcing the winners then. I want to thank everyone who has been participating in this contest.  I hope this encourages you guys to come back often and have your say even when the contest is over as I always love to read your comments.  If this is your first day joining us, welcome – it’s not too late to enter the contest.  Here’s how it works…for the remainder of the month, I’ve decided to run a “Comment a Day” Contest.  I’m going to post a project every weekday (not Saturday or Sunday) from now until the end of March.  What I would love for you to do, is to stop by and leave me a comment each of the days I post. Some days it will be a comment about anything at all, other days, I’ll ask a specific question.

On Wednesday, April 1st – I will draw the name of one person that left me a comment from each day  (so one person from today, one from tomorrow…and so on, until March 31st), and those 7 lucky winners will win all THREE planners from April: the workshop planner (due to be released April 1st), the scrapbook planner (due to be released April 7th) or the class planner (due to be released April 15th).

Ready?  Set? Go…….To enter Day 5 of the “Comment a Day” Contest leave me a comment in the comments section of this post about anything at all.
