“All About Me” Paper Bag Album created with my 12 year old son Zachary
Posted: Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 | CommentsToday I wanted to share with you all a fun project that my 12 year old son and I created together. My son Zach is in Grade 7, and at the beginning of the year, he was assigned an “all about me” project. The aim of the project was to create a scrapbook about him that covered a whole bunch of different areas. Together we decided that instead of trying to put together a traditional scrapbook, we would do something different, and create our own album using paper lunch bags and binder rings – because they are “school-ish”.
The album was made up of 5 paper lunch bags – and they are just the standard sized lunch bags you buy at grocery stores. Inside each of the lunch bags we created a pull-out tag – for journalling as well as for any additional supporting photos that we felt we needed for the theme of the page. What you see below is the end result of about 15 hours of work. Yeah I know, we never planned on it taking that long when we started.
While I was the one that created the binding, my son did most everything else. Although I helped with layout design, he cut, he glued, he stamped, he punched, he colored chipboard, he embossed, he decorated…..and of course he did all the typing and journalling…..so it really was a collaborative effort.
The picture below is what the completed album looks like. The only thing my son wanted to add that we didn’t end up having time to do, is to tie bits of ribbon to the rings. As you can see I completely enclosed the binding so that you wouldn’t see the ends of the paper bags. It just makes it look less “messy”.
The next picture gives you an idea of what the insert area looks like. Each insert was built on a 5″ x 8 1/2″ piece of Pacific Point CS. We tied ribbon around the end and attached one of those shipping tags you buy at office supply stores to the ribbon on each insert. On the tags we stamped the numbers one through five to number the inserts.
To pull out the insert you just grasp the ribbon and pull. You can see the first insert below, which is just a few pictures of Zach.
When you open up the first page of the album you see our first two page spread. The left page is like a title page, and the right page begins with the first theme that he was required to write about, which was things he likes to do.
The next picture shows you the other side of the first pull-out tag:
The next picture shows you the “Things I like to do” page. Below the picture you can see the pull-out tag. Because we had a lot of pictures for things he likes to do, we made a little booklet on the tag. The booklet was bound with DP and held by staples (again, something we chose because it complimented the school theme).
When you flip open the first page of the booklet you see:
The next page looks like this:
You can see the last two pages of the booklet below. So the booklet which we added to the tag allowed us 6 more pages of photos.
The next main two page spread in the album covers the where he lives and his school themes.
The other side of the tag (on the other side of the booklet) looks like:
The front of the pull-out tag that goes with the other page:
The picture below shows you the next 2 page layout in the album. The left hand side of the page was about places he’d travelled, and the right hand page was about his family. He was supposed to write a paragraph about all the immediate members in his family. As you can see we numbered each person with a number – and you’ll see why in a minute.
Below you can see what the pull out tag looks like for the left hand page. If folds open so you can read what he wrote about the places he’s travelled.
Here’s what the pull out tag looks like for the right hand page:
Then when you open the flap on the insert you see a paragraph for each person, numbered in the same way as the page:
The final two pages in the album are shown below:
The pull-out tags for those pages just have journalling on them and look exactly like the first pull-out tag under the “Zachary” title page.
The back of the album is just plain DP (the arrow pattern) matted onto Bashful Blue CS like we did the front cover.
Just for kicks, here’s a picture of what my studio looked like when we finished:
And that doesn’t even show the complete mess. There’s a third table at the far left of the picture that you can kind of see. Our mess spread to all three tables. It took me 2 1/2 hours to clean the next morning LOL! As you can see, creating is a MESSY process in our house!
So that’s all there is to it! A lot of work, but well worth the effort. Zach is absolutely thrilled with it, which is what is important to me! See you tomorrow!

Halloween Treat Bag using the Scalloped Mini Lunch Sacks
Posted: Thursday, October 28th, 2010 | CommentsThe other day I was visiting the blog of my friend, fellow Stampin’ Up! demonstrator and web designer – Amy Celona – and came across this really cute paper bag gift keeper. I loved the idea so much that I decided to adapt the idea for Halloween using our scalloped mini lunch sacks.
Here’s how I made this project:
- Cut a 3 9/16″ x 11″ piece of Rich Razzleberry CS and score it at 6 5/8″ and 7 1/2″. Fold along the score lines using a bone folder to burnish the creases. Stick the biggest panel of this piece to one side of the mini lunch sack using Sticky Strip. It will fold up and over the top of the mini lunch sack.
- Center and stick a 3 1/8″ x 5 7/8″ piece of striped Wicked Fun DP to a 3 1/4″ x 6″ piece of Basic Black CS. Center and stick this to a 3 1/2″ x 6 1/4″ piece of Rich Razzlebery CS. Stick this to the front of the mini lunch sack with Sticky Strip making sure you align the bottom of the CS with the bottom of the lunch sac. The scalloped edge of the mini lunch sack will show above the CS.
- Center and stick a 3 1/8″ x 3 1/8″ piece of spooky DP from the Wicked Fun DP collection to a 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ piece of Basic Black CS. Center and stick this piece to the front flap of the Rich Razzleberry CS.
- Run an embossing buddy over a 4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White CS. Stamp the skull image from the “From the Crypt” stamp set onto the Whisper White CS in VersaMark ink. Sprinkle on black embossing powder and heat with a heat tool to melt.
- Center the window of the 2 1/2″ circle punch around the embossed skull image and punch it out.
- Cut a 2 3/4″ circle out of Basic Black CS using the Circle Scissors Plus and the glass mat.
- Center and stick the skull image to the Basic Black CS circle with SNAIL adhesive.
- Lay the matted image onto a foam mat (from the Mat pack) and pierce a hole through both the eyes of the skull with a paper-piercing tool. Insert a clear medium rhinestone brad into each hole, and then open the prongs at the back to secure.
- Place Sticky Strip all around the perimeter of the matted skull image (on the back). Remove the red backing from the Sticky Strip. Keeping your Rich Razzleberry grosgrain ribbon on the roll, ruffle and stick the ribbon to the Sticky Strip, around the entire perimeter of the circle. Stick this image piece to the top flap with Stampin’ Dimensionals. You want half of it to hang down over the edge of the top flap.
- Stamp and emboss the word Spooky onto a scrap of Whisper White CS (in the same manner as the skull in step 8). Punch out the word Spooky with the Designer label punch. Sponge around the edges with Basic Black Classic ink. Place a 5 mm rhinestone from the Basic rhinestones collection above and below the greeting (on the label). Stick the label to the bottom right of the bag with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
- Measure 1″ down from the top left and right edges of both the front and back of the back and make a small pencil mark. Punch a small notch where each pencil mark is using a 1/8″ handheld circle punch.
- Wrap about 34″ of black twine around the top of the bag (I wrapped it 3 times) and tie it in a bow. The notches should hold the twine in place and keep it from slipping. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

Spooky Pillow Box Purse
Posted: Thursday, October 21st, 2010 | CommentsI can’t believe that Halloween is only 10 days away! I guess because I was away for both Founder’s Circle and then the cruise – taking up 3 weeks out of September/October – I feel almost like fall has completly passed me by. We got our kids their costumes last weekend. Now I’m just starting to think about what I’m going to do for a class treat as the kids usually hand out treats to their classmates.
For today’s project I wanted to share with you a cute little pillow box purse that can be used to package up a small treat for someone special. I actually got the idea from the Sept./Oct. Paper Crafts magazine. There was a full page ad with Halloween projects – and one of them featured what looked to be like a pillow box purse. It immediately struck me that it would be so easy to re-create by simply adding a handle to our pillow box (from the Stampin’ Up! pillow box die). Now I’m sure that there is someone, somewhere out in blogland that has already thought of this idea, but for me, it was an “aha” moment.
Here’s how I made the project:
-
Die cut a pillow box out of Pumpkin Pie CS using the Pillow Box die and your Big Shot.
-
Die cut a second pillow box out of Nite Owl DP (from the Holiday Mini Catalogue). Cut out the front and back panel, and cut them apart (I didn’t keep them folded).
-
Stick the front panel to the front of the box and the back panel to the back of the box using Tombow Multi-Purpose adhesive.
-
Place a strip of Sticky Strip on the long narrow flap. Set aside for a moment.
-
Take a 4″ x 4″ piece of Basic Black CS and punch a hole in the center of it with a 1 3/8″ circle punch. Center the window of the 2 1/2″ circle punch around it and punch it out. You will now end up with a 2 1/2″ wide “ring”. Fold it in half.
-
Peel the backing from the Sticky Strip on the pillow box flap. Lay the folded edge of the “ring” onto the sticky Strip – you only want about 1/4″ of the folded flat bottom of the ring to overlap the long flap of the pillow box. Place another strip of Sticky Strip on top of the first strip so that the ends of the “ring” are sandwiched between the two layers.
-
Now assemble the pillow box. The flat bottom of the folded “ring” will be sandwiched between the two layers of Pumpkin Pie CS, creating a handle.
-
Lightly sponge around the outer and inner edge of the handle with Whisper White craft ink.
-
Take a 14″ piece of Basic Black satin ribbon and a 14″ piece of the Raven black lace. Lay them one on top of the other and then tie them in a knot around the pillow bow. Position the knot towards the left side of the box. Set the box aside for a moment.
-
Take a scrap of Whisper White CS and stamp the spider web image from the Wicked Cool stamp set onto it in Basic Black Classic ink. Run an embossing buddy over the Whisper White CS piece.
-
Ink up the “Spooky” greeting from the Wicked Cool stamp set in Basic Black Craft ink and center and stamp it over the cob web image. Sprinkle on Heat and Stick powder and then heat with a heat tool to melt. Sprinkle on fine Black Glitter and then heat set.
-
Punch a scalloped oval out of Basic Black CS using the scalloped oval punch. Pierce a hole through the center of each scallop with a foam mat and paper-piercing tool.
-
Center the 1 3/4″ x 7/8″ oval punch over the stamped and glittered greeting and punch it out. Center and stick it to the black scalloped oval using 2 Stampin’ Dimensionals.
-
Stick the matted greeting oval to the pillow box with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
-
Stick black rhinestones to the handle. I used peel and stick rhinestones from the dollar store. You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

Emoticon and Internet Slang Candy Wrappers
Posted: Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 | CommentsWell a short time ago, I came across a cute Exclusive Quikutz die that featured ‘emoticons’. I instantly knew that I could easily come up with the same idea using some (try all) of my circle punches. I decided to create cute candy wrappers (from the new Sizzix Candy Wrapper die featured in the mini catalogue) and feature different emoticons on each one. I paired them with tags which featured internet slang, of which I had to research and discovered that there was an online dictionary for. It came as quite a shock to discover how much profanity was included. There was also a section which discussed key slang for parents to beware of. Some of the slang involved warning of the presence of parents, and overtures of an unfriendly nature. I have to say that while emoticons can be fun and useful, there is a lot of the bad with the good! So anyways, I of course chose some fun ones. I have not done a video because at the moment I have a bad cold, but hopefully by Friday I will stop sniffling and be able to showcase the Sick Emoticon in a video. I will also do another Emoticon card for Friday lol.
Supplies:
- Paper: Pink Pirouette, Very Vanilla, Melon Mambo, Baja Breeze, Pacific Point, River Rock, Wild Wasabi, Kiwi Kiss (retired), Basic Black, Daffodil delight, Chocolate Chip, Real Red, Whisper White
- Ink: Tangerine Tango, Bravo Burgundy, Melon Mambo, Wild Wasabi, Creamy Caramel (retired), Tempting Turquoise, Pacific Point
- Punches: Two Step Owl punch (for the circles), 1 1/4″ circles, Heart to Heart punch, Slot punch (retired), Scallop Trim border punch, Scallop Oval punch, 1 3/4″ x 7/8″ oval punch, 1/8″ hole punch (non-SU)
- Other: Linen thread, 1/8″ Early Espresso Taffeta Ribbon, white silk ribbon (non-SU), Big Shot, Various Small Alphabets, Candy Wrapper Bigz die, Background 1 Texturz Plates (diamond pattern for Happy), Stampin Dimensionals, Multi-purpose Adhesive, White gel pen, Vanilla Shimmer Smooch Spritz
Directions:
You tube has some great video’s for putting together the Candy Wrapper box, so check it out for instructions. As for the Emoticons, they are simply layered and cut circles for the most part. Hopefully Friday I can put togethed the Sicky Emoticon video. It is probably the hardest, and not hard at that! It will be good for showing you the finer details which I have added.

WOW Wednesday: Meander Book
Posted: Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 | CommentsI came across this really cool Tutorial the other day and decided that I would really like to try it out and point it out to you guys. It makes this adorable little book with 16 pages which you can decorate to your hearts content. I love the fact that this could be used for so many things. Best friend books for my daughter, Pet condolence where you put pictures of the love pet, This is also fantastic for a mini brag book for my purse. This particular book is not decorated because I am giving it to my daughter to fill with pictures of her and her friends. We are moving in just 6 weeks and she really wants to have a place for photo’s. I have provided the link to the video tutorial and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I already have to make up more for a bunch of little gifts
. Take care and have a wonderful Wednesday!
