A Holiday Blitz Event you won’t want to miss!
Posted on: Tuesday, November 18th, 2008
After all the recent craziness in my life, today is the day I am officially "back" at my Stampin’ Up! business, and I am so excited to announce the launch of a HOLIDAY BLITZ event here at www.andreawalford.com.
EACH AND EVERY DAY for the rest of the month of November, my sister Sophia and I will be sharing a new holiday project with you and will be offering some fantastic blog give-aways.
The projects we will be sharing will be a mixture of cards, tags, packaging and gift items. Best of all, many of the projects will include tutorials! How much better can you get than that?
The first prize we are giving away is a FREE PDF TUTORIAL for the project pictured above. This tutorial includes a supply list, dimensions and over 40 step-by-step color photos on how to make this project. This project is an original design which I created for Saturday’s Make & Take for the Demonstrator Stampfest event. It is a Christmas Planner in a DVD tin. You can see more close-ups at the end of this post – and of course click on the pictures for a larger view.
Although this is a tutorial I would love to share for free with you all, unfortunately I cannot as it was a special project created for a paid event. All the demonstrators attending the event will be receiving this tutorial for free as a special gift along with the class handout which they received as part of their registration package. Never fear thought, there will be LOTS of free tutorials for all sorts of really cool projects!
I will be giving away a FREE PDF TUTORIAL each and every day for the rest of this month! I’ll be posting a question of the day – every day. To enter the give-away, leave your answer in the comments section of each day’s post. At the beginning of the following day’s post I will announce the previous day’s winner. You can enter this contest EVERY DAY if you so choose. In addition to this prize we will also be giving away some other prizes throughout the remainder of the month so you won’t want to miss a day.
Today’s question: Do you do anything special to countdown the days until Christmas. If yes, please share with us all what you do. Please leave your answer in the comment section of THIS post. Good luck!
The Christmas planner includes 5 pockets in all – right now you are seeing how the first set of pockets opens.
This last picture shows the planner competely unfolded.

We just do the standard chocolate advent calendar. However, I have seen some very cool homemade advent calendars that I might give a go with this year!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Btw… sorry, LOVE the planner!!! FABULOUS job!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
I start by decorating my home and office. I start playing christmas music while at work to be in a happy mood. I have a ceramic santa with day blocks that helps me count down the days.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Love this project…what my children and I do is starting Dec. 1st I have little gifts that the children unwrap for Advent and before they open the advent gift each night, we read out of a book called the Christmas story and then add a figure to our creche scene (the stable scene) on our mantle. The children love this tradition and it’s something we all appreciate and love! Enjoy the holidays!!!!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
LOVE the planner! As far as counting down to Christmas goes, as a child my sister and I used the Advent calendar my grandmother made for us. It’s a big tree and each day you add ornaments. That tradition has been passed down to my children who use the same calendar my grandmother made for me!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
I don’t usually do a countdown, but have seen soooo many cool ones I might this year. I also have a special countdown to do until Dec. 19th. My son enlisted into the Army in Sept. (we just got home yeterday from a Family Visitation weekend) and he will be coming home for Christmas. I am already counting the days…I miss him sooo much. Love the planner!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
We celebrate the holiday with a Jesse tree. We read a passage from the Bible each day. We start with the story of Creation on Dec 1 and end with Jesus’ birth on Christmas eve. We try to make an ornament for our tree representing each story, but usually miss a few days here or there
It’s really helped us keep our focus on what Christmas means to our family!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
When my kids were young, we used an advent calendar. Now I count the days in December until we see our grandchildren. Wonderful calendar! You have so many wonderful ideas!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
We have a count down each year with a secret santa for someone in our neighborhood or church. We have the 24 day count down where we do something or give something to this family without them knowing who is the person giving the gifts or service. We have done this for many years as a family. It is a great service project and everyone loves the fact that the families are never to find out who was doing the service. We start on Dec 1st and wrap up the 24th by leaving christmas dinner all prepared on the door step the 24th. One of the tricts is finding out who will be at home for the holiday to share with for 24 days. If they happen to change their plans and not be home on Christmas day the christmas feast is given to a family that you know wil be home. We have only had one year that we had to change our plan. all the other 20 plus years we have been successful. Maybe we will be your secret santa this year. Beware of fun gifts and service projects happpening in your neightborhood. Happy Holidays
November 18th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Each day is planned with a specific countdown activity. Family and friends come over to play on any given day’s venue. Thank you for offering this Andrea – love your classes.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
We discovered a German tradition last year and my kids fell in love with it! Starting with the first of December you hide a fake pickle ornament in your tree. We let the kids find the pickle everyday till Christmas. The one who finds it the most gets an extra little something (from the dollar store
on christmas eve. We gave the other two a piece of candy for trying. My kids are already asking me when we are going to hide the pickle…and our tree isn’t even up yet!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Oh man!! This project is fabulous Andrea!! We do the advent calendars, we get out our nativity sets, and we talk a lot about what Christmas means – trying to counteract all the consumerism of the season.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
WE call it moms 25 crafts till christmas. My boys and i spand at least 1 hour everyday doing christmas projects anything from cards for troops to shopping for a toy for the local toy drives. Its a great way to get into the spirit.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Thanksgiving weekend we always make a Gingerbread house. We buy the kit, which we did this past weekend and then the whole family helps put the house together and decorate it. Dec. 1 we always have an Advent calendar too. By the way, our two daughters are 18 and 21 years old and they still love and insist on the traditions.
I absolutely love the planner. Thank you for doing this for us all Andrea and Sophia.

My son love doing the advent calendars. He is 11 and can’t wait for this year to begin. Great idea, love this planner.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Cute! Growing up my parents had a “Beary Merry Christmas” thing that we hung on the wall. Each day we got to put the little toy bear on a velcro square in a diff room of the house, and on the 24th the bear “found” Christmas in the living room. Not sure that made sense
, but it was great! Now with our kids we do a “Christmas Mouse” countdown where they get a cute little treat every night while sleeping. (Tooth fairy meets Christmas.:)
November 18th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
My children are small and this is the first year I will be starting a tradition. I will start by doing the countdown to christmas by opening a little box of candy each day and pull out a strip of paper that has Bible verses to read that refer to the birth of Jesus. Everyday we will add more to the story and once a week one of those papers will list an activity such as making an ornament, singing christmas carols, playing a christmas game, go look at lights etc.
I love your tutorial. If I don’t win it, I am still willing to pay for it if you will put it in your store.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
We begin our count down at Thankgiving. We start with putting up and decorating the tree and the decorations around the house. Then everday from that we watch a Christmas movie every night including Christmas night. It’s been a fun way for us to get in the Christmas spirit.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Love this project!
In our home we make one ornament for each member of the family to put on the tree. When our children our grown they can take their’s to start their own collection with their family.
Hugs and Blessings

Well, we decorate the house – inside and out – we bake and shop and all three of my boys have a traditional advent calendar. We also go to church each week to celebrate each passing week leading up to Christ’s birth and the lighting of the advent candle. My boys also participate in an “advent angel” program at school where they surprise a classmate each week with a little treat, and then a gift right – before Christmas. It is the jolliest time of the year, isn’t it?
November 18th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
We have this great advent calendar that the kids love to use. It never changes but the kids make it seem like it is brand new every year.
Thanks for your question!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Andrea, thats a wonderful gift! Thank you and your sister so much for sharing all the wonderful ideas with us!
We have every year an advent calendar with very good chocolate inside. Sometimes I prepare selfmade calendars for the family. In this year I plan to create an advent calendar with differend sour cream boxes.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Another winning project Andrea!!
To count down to Christmas we buy an Advent Calendar together and hang it in the kitchen. Each day the kids take turns opening the windows. We try to get a religious one and say a prayer each day of Advent when we open the windows.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
That Christmas Organizer is so great! It looks like you put in ALOT of work into creating that! Very Cute!!
We have an advent calendar that I made. Everyday has a special little “treat” inside the tin. Whether it be a piece of candy or a little quote of the day. It makes time go by so fast though!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Andrea, first welcome back, and then this is a beautiful project. Shows your special touch. I count down to Christmas by inwardly screaming and pulling out my hair because I’m never caught up. I need this planner for sure!

Unfortunately since my kids have gotten older we have gotten out of the habit of counting down. Unfortunately life is hectic in our household on a daily basis and we sometimes forget the simple things. Thanks for all your great ideas. Mary
November 18th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
We have an advent calendar that we made at church years ago. The kids still love to move the star each day!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
When my daughter was younger, we would do the “Days till Christmas” countdowns using cottonballs for Santa’s beard. My son never liked doing it so after DD was older, we stopped. First weekend in December is typically put up the tree weekend.
I would love to do some type of countdown with my customers but time always gets away from me!
This seems to be a wonderful project. Is it available to purchase from it’s originator?? TFS all your neat ideas with us!!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
We do the chocolate advent calendar and I have a hanging snowman with little pockets to count down the days with. But I did purchase the rub-on one from SU and hope to get my project made in the next day or so! Will post on my blog when I do!
Thanks for a chance to win this! I could use a little ornanization! X-ing my fingers!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
This year, since my kids are older teens, we are doing a twelve days of Christmas. Every day there will be a small gift, building up to Christmas day. Things such as gift cards, cd’s etc.
thanks for the opportunity to win this awesome tutorial.

What a fabulous planner!
We have a few special things we do here for the holidays, but my kids enjoy the advent calendar the best.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
We read a special Christmas story every night in the month of December. I love to read to my daughter and she has fun picking out the special story of the night!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
we start the season off by my daughter picking a name off the giving tree at school. She then has her name to shop for a special gift for a child in need. We decorate after Thanksgiving and then we have a santa countdown and we change the numbers daily. I did purchase the christmas countdown vinyl (home decor by Stampin up!) and will be making our own advent calendar. I hope that is one of your free tutorials!!!! LOL. Glad you are back and looking forward to all the great ideas. Denise
November 18th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Omygosh, great project! We have done a cute cotton ball a day on a santa beard advent picture for my son, but this year he’s graduated to his beloved toys…a Lego Advent calendar. He saw it 2 months ago and has to look at the box almost every night. For me, I’ll be flipping numbers on the Countdown Calendar that I created for my blog’s 12 Days of Christmas! I love how it turned out.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
I don’t do a traditional countdown, but I have some favorite holiday books that I always pull out. I read some every day until Christmas.
Welcome back!!!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
THAT is the cutest planner EVER! Thank you for sharing!
Last year my son and I used the Lego Advent calendar to count down to Christmas. It was soooo hard to only let him open one teeny tiny bunch of Legos every day! I guess I still have a few more days to figure out how we’ll countdown this year =)
November 18th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Oh My!! This project is fabulous Andrea!! We do the advent calendars, we get out our nativity sets, and we talk a lot about what Christmas means – trying to counteract all the consumerism of the season.

Traditionally, the day after Thanksgiving I get abducted by aliens. They bring me back right before Christmas. The “woman” they leave in my place while I am gone generally gets very little done in the way of Christmas preparations. Now, I admit that I have no clear memories of the abductions, anal probings, visits to the spacecraft, and whatnot that those darn aliens are typically known to perpetrate on their selected human victims. But since alien abductees frequently report periods of time loss, and I have no memories each year of the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the only logical explanation I can come up with is that I am an annual victim of ET.
PS: If I only had your planner, I could leave detailed instructions for the “woman” the aliens leave in my place to follow during my abduction period.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I have an Advent calendar that I use in my classroom. Each day my students have a small ornament to move to the tree. They love it! Welcome back!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I am so glad things are settling down for you. As for countdown to Christmas…..My girls are grown and out of the house, my grandsons live 900+ miles away, so I don’t do a countdown to Christmas, but I start the day after Thanksgiving (US) and pull out the box that has my Christmas and Holiday Sweatshirts and Sweaters and Jewelry. Then, every week I pull out some decorations and start decorating my house and by the week before Christmas it is all done. I love listening to Christmas music all during my decorating and wrapping and of course my crafting.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
For Christmas countdown I made a countdown calendar from my son made out of 2×2 wood blocks and he really enjoys changing the numbers each day as we get closer to Christmas.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
We have a advent calendar that my boys still fight over (hey, give me a break, they are only 17 and 15..smile) they have worked it out though in the last few years one is odd (that sounds bad) one is even. We also have had a advent wreath that we have lighted at each dinner (when we all eat together) and other traditions. One of which being every night they ask me if they can open one present before Christmas. Hope I win this. Have a ton of these dvd holders waiting to be altered.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
We love to use an advent calendar to count down the days until christmas. The project is absolutely beautiful (as usual).
November 18th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I have a advent calendar to count down the days until Christmas.
What an awesome project!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I have an advent box and each day the boys get to open a box. They are notes of things they should do (call someone far away that is lonely, turn out the lights tonight and look at the Christmas tree lights as a family, etc.) or a small surprise of money or something that they can choose like a meal for the day. They love it and so do I.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Since my son’s birthday is in December, we don’t put the tree up until after his birthday so his day will be special and not tied to Christmas.
Your project is just awesome. I have a blank DVD tin begging to be altered!
Hugs~
November 18th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
The Planner…Love IT Love IT Love IT.
I start decorating and baking cookies the day after Thanksgiving. We have lots of cookies and decorations by Christmas Time. Now putting them back up takes awhile, sometimes longer than getting them out.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
We count down to Christmas by using an Advent Calendar that my sister in law made us. One of the children will move the star every morning and the kids always take turns doing this. Then sometime during the day we will watch a Holiday movie and read a different Christmas story every night. That’s been our tradition for the last couple of years. This year I will be having the kids help me with a Christmas project every day.
That is a great project!
Happy Holidays!
Karen
November 18th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
What a great project. I think I will do a variation of it for my next stamp camp. I have a gazillion of these tins, it will be nice to use some up! Thanks for the inspiration!!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Love the project!!
We decorate after Thanksgiving, and have a calendar to count down the days!!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Love, Love, Love the planner. Twelve days from Christmas, I start sending an email to every current customer and send one everyday until Christmas. “On the 12th day of Christmas my Demo sent to me…” Each day I send either a coupon to be used the next year, instructions for a special fold or technique, picture of a card with instructions, etc.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
My kids are all grown up so we don’t do anything special any more. When they were little we always had an advent calendar.
Love the planner!!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
As my children are grown, I now share the excitement of the Christmas countdown with my grandchildren–it’s putting up the Christmas decorations, baking special Christmas cookies, crafting and watching Christmas movies. They love it!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
We have two “countdowns”–both are little wooden ones. One was given to my children by my mom, and they love it!! So, they take turns pulling off the numbers!!! I love the holidays, and it’s more of a countdown to Thanksgiving for me–that’s when I get to decorate!!!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Love the Christmas planner. I don’t really do anything to countdown to Christmas. Since it is just me in the house now, I keep things pretty simple for the holidays.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
With my kids I have a really cool stuffed Santa and reindeer that hold onto a chalkboard and everyday we change the number.
I also want to do an advent calendar with them this year.
For my customers I’m going to show them 12 different cards for the first 12 days of december to help to encourage them to get their xmas cards done as well as other gifts and projects.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
For us we celebrate the start of Santa’s busy season by writing letters after Thanksgiving(U.S.) and go on Black Friday and get brand new P.J’s that we will wear on Christmas eve. Then every Friday before Christmas we read a Christmas story before bed instead of a just a reg.story I love every moment of it!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
I love this project! I can’t wait to see all the goodies you and Sophia will be sharing with us.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I am so glad to see you are “back”…we’ve missed all your clever projects.
I have waaay more classes and events in Nov and Dec to help everyone get ready early
November 18th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
We don’t count down the days to Christmas!!!
What an awesome planner that was and what a great experience to listen to 2 fabulous speakers and enjoy stamping company on friday and saturday!! TFS
November 18th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
We have a calendar with pictures from last christmas that we pull the pages off of everyday. By the way can we buy the cd tin planner. I would be willing to buy it. It sounds like others would be too.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Glad to see you back with your great creative ideas!! I love to see your blog pop up! Kids are grown now but we used to use a candy type advent calendar.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
What a gorgeous planner! When we were kids we did the advent calendar but this is my fiance and my first christmas alone so I’m going to read other people’s traditions and see if we can get ideas to start our own!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
you have great giveaways-thanks!
we used to just do the regular chocolate advent calendars but this year i made my own advent calender well it’s more of an advent christmas tree with a different ‘ornament’ (which i made from paper) for each day in december. the advent ornaments are filled with goodies like bracelets, wind up toys, lip gloss, etc.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
When my kids were small we had several advent calendars…new one every year. One year we did the Jesse Tree and I made all the pieces for that. Then my friend made a tree out of felt with numbered stars on it that had velcro on the back and each day you placed a star on the tree. The white circle velcro looks like snow when the stars aren’t on.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
What a great planner! And I just received DVD tins in the mail today! Maybe it’s fate?
The countdown to Christmas at our house is basically all year long – as my son is obsessed with this holiday. However, during December we have a countdown that I made from felt, it has Santa on the top and 24 small candy canes tied onto it, so he gets one each evening. The excitement around here during December is almost too much to take!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
GORGEOUS project Andrea!
I’ve been wanting to create an advent calendar since last Christmas. Our countdown begins with our first pot of mulled wine of the season on December 1st! The Christmas baking the end of the first week… the tree goes up the second week and than we just wing it!
Cheers.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
i used to have a calender to mark the days but and none anymore so i should be making one for my kids…
November 18th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
I didn’t do a countdown with my boys but I want to with my grandson. Thanks for the awesome giveaway.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
We always have a scavenger hunt.
We start out with the small things, a pair of socks, a candy bar, with little rhythming
clues for each small gift. Then on Christmas morning, they have their Large gift. Each one has to wait for the other to find their items on the clues, it’s fun, and sort of drags out the Magic…so to speak.
Love the planner, looking forward to the days ahead for your surprises
November 18th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
What a fantastic project! I do have an advent calendar that I put up each year, but because my kids are grown and moved out, I don’t do anything with it other than have it out. I’ve seen a lot of great countdowns on blogs this year that have inspired me, so am working on some ideas for a countdown on my own blog in December.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
When my children were younger(much younger), we always made a paper chain at the end of November. Starting on December 1st,we would remove a link every night before bedtime. The last link would be removed on Christmas Eve.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I love the planner, well actually I love everything you do. Our children are grown but still at home. We usually have our tree up and the house completely decorated by the first of December. The only gifts we buy are a couple of small ones for each other (hubby, me & 2 kids) and our great-great nephew. His gift is already purchased. We do have a count down snowman that the numbers hang on his body. We change the numbers everyday. I just love the sights and smells of Christmas, but hate that is has gotten so out of hand. Thanks for all the sharing you do.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Hi Andrea,
We love to do an advent calendar with out children. We have a favorite one that we use year after year.
Blessings,
Robyn Correa
November 18th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I don’t count down the individual days but I do count the weeks. Each of the four Wednesdays until Christmas we have Advent services at my church. It is a beautiful service and highlights what the season is really about.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
When my girls were small (a few decades ago) I made a wall hanging of a Christmas tree (felt) and then sewed on 3 rows of pockets below it. In each pocket was a felt decoration that would stick to the tree. By Christmas eve it was all decorated.
Last year I made a new wall hanging for our only grandchild, Isabella, in the same style, but a little classier as I’ve improved over the years! She loved it, and now it has become a tradition that she – and her new baby sister – will share in the future.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Love the planner. About the 1st of dec. I make my list of things to be done. Whento start cookies for my cookie trays, whne I need to be finished with my Christmas cards etc. When I’m done I cross them off and hope they all get done in time.
Sherry
November 18th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Hi Andrea and Sophia!
Welcome back! Love the planner. My little girls help mommy decorate the house in the days leading up to Christmas. Because they are small (2 and 4) and I have a full time job, it usually takes us most of December to finish getting the house ready, the cookies baked, gifts bought, cards made, and packaging done. It’s lots of fun, though!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
OOPS – I meant to say that we love to do an advent calendar WITH OUR children. Poor little sweeties. Sorry for the typo. Guess I’ll need to slow down and check my spelling before posting.

We count down to Christmas using our Nativity Set (we have a little people version so the kids can’t break the glass set). Each day in December we add a piece to the scene. We start with the stable and by Christmas Eve we add baby Jesus finishing the Nativity.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
When my children were small, I had a cling Christmas Tree that went on the front of our refrigerator, and each day one of the children could add an ornament. I also had an advent calendar that they could open and get a prize.
Now I just go about the devorating and cookie and candy and card making starting the day after Thanksgiving and hope to be done the week before Christmas.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
I have different crafty Christmas countdowns that I received as gifts from my Kindergarten students, so I can use one at home and one at school as well. The project you showed today is ADORABLE!!!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Nov.24th we start with theee list:
a needy family??, church activities??, cards made & addressed, checking my gift list, adding,& trying to cut back, sewing special projects, including embroidering items, too.
AND..who could forget the Christmas carol cd’s being organized, on & on, whatever comes to mind, as weel, making sure the mitten box has my annual donation of mitts.
I love the season!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
On a personal note I don’t do anything for the count down to Christmas but on a business level I have something in the works. I plan to send various cards/ornament ideas in newsletters to clients. Now if I can only find the time between working 40 hours a week retail and doing SU. It is hard.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
That is a GREAT project!!! We don’t do anything to count down. I’m usually too busy getting cards made & in the mail, gifts bought, baking done, etc.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Yes, we have a tradition that my daughter and I share. We have been doing advent calendars for each other for several years. Each day we have a special gift or event for each other. We have so much fun doing this for each other and it makes the Christmas Season so much more meaningful. Examples are going to High Tea, going down to see the Christmas lights at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC, taking special walks on the beach or in the woods. Each day holds something special.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Every year my 2 best friends and I and our kids get together to decorate gingerbread houses. We each bring our house and candy that we share and decorate our houses and the landscaping. We have been doing this for over 25 years. The kids started out by using a half pint whip cream container and cut out the door and windows, then when they get older go to half gallon milk carton and then to gingerbread or chocolate houses. Now my kids are grown and I have 2 granddaughters and they are making houses now. We have so much fun. Sometimes we don’t see each other for months, but we always set aside 1 day each year for our gingerbread houses.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
We have a felt wall hanging that has little pockets for the month of Dec. on the bottom that have the charactors from the birth of Christ. The top is decorated like the scene from his Birth with a Stable and blocks of hay, etc. Each day a different child puts one of the charactors some where on the top part of the wall hanging. They all have velcro on the back of them. The kids love it and on the 25th day they get to put Jesus in the cradle.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
We would write down something nice that we shared or did something for someone each day of Advent. Realizing how easy this was for my children – it helped them to see that they could do a good deed each day -not just during Advent.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Andrea: Count me in…..our count-down tranditions include the “Advent Calendar” LOVE that-1st Sunday of the month the Grandkids receive an invitation to come to my house to make gingerbread houses the 2nd Sunday of December. Their admission to this event is a coloring page of a Gingerbread Houses that they need to color and bring with them on the actual day of the event (fun looking back over the years at how their coloring skills improve!). The next weekend is spent decorating Christmas Cookies and then they also have a weekend spent at a hotel/waterpark…which is the topping of the holiday’s. These are all traditions that we have been doing since we became grandparents 9 years ago……LOVE the holiday. Kadie
November 18th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
LOVE your ideas. You are a great inspiration! Welcome back!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Hi Andrea!
Yes, we will be counting down the days with an advent calendar like the one they made at convention! woo hoo. IT will be filled mostly with notes and quarters and maybe a little chocolate. Quarters are pretty IN with my 5 yr Dd right now!

November 18th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
What a great planner!
My twins each have a chocolate advent calendar.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
We enjoy decorating the tree and setting up the decorations on the first Sunday of Advent.
Glad you are beginning to see “light” – been quite the last few months for you!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
I love this DVD planner! We ususally don’t do anything too special when it comes to counting down, but sometimes we make a paper chain and tear one off for everyday till Christmas. Hears to winning!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
When my daughters were growing up we had an advent calendar every year to help us count down the days till Christmas. My husband and I have continued the tradition, and we love to buy the chocolate version of this holiday classic.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Since our children are grown and no longer live at home, our count-down to Christmas has changed over the years. We start by decorating our main tree on Thanksgiving night when some of my children are home. Then for the next 7 days, I decorate a tree for each room in my house…some are small and some are 7′tall! My house looks like a Christmas shop when I get through! Then each day until Christmas Eve, I make something Christmas related….handmade gifts, homemade goodies. This is my favorite time of the year and I try to enjoy every minute of it!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
My family does not participate in any kind of countdown to Christmas. But I have read some awesome ideas right here on your comments. I love Mom’s 25 Crafts till Christmas! The planner is awesome—I WANT ONE!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
This year, I am starting a new tradition – making most of my Christmas cards. WOW…it has been an undertaking.
We begin the outside decorations/lights soon and after that is finished, we will start working on the inside tree and other decorations.
I also love to bake cookies, make pies and dabble in making different candies.
Christmas is my favorite time of the year, as my son and his family are home for part of the holidays.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
That is a super neat holiday planner. I would love to have the tutorial because just last week I bought 13 DVD tins. This would be a perfect use for them. *crossing fingers*
This year I am going to try to implement our new tradition – which will just be an advent calendar countdown. The “special” part will be that I am going to attempt to make my own calendar out of matchboxes – as seen here: http://www.bhg.com/holidays/christmas/crafts/make-matchbox-advent-box/
Thanks for the chance to win.
Alicia
November 18th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
We don’t do anything to count down to Christmas. This year we will be going on vacation right before Christmas, so the countdown to Christmas is also the countdown to the end of our vacation. : (
November 18th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Super idea you two
…we don’t really celebrate the countdown too much either, but we have a little santa that holds a metal calendar and each of the four kids take turns moving the magnetic star each day closer and closer to christmas
Kim A. (ok, so they don’t exactly take turns, they fight over who gets to move it :p haha)
November 18th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
I love the planner! From the first day of December we start decorating the house and tree. We enjoy it very much. We also start counting the days til Christmas.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
So glad you and your sister are “back” I look forward to opening your website daily. You are an inspiration- Sarah
November 18th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Awesome little planner girl! I saw an idea this year to make a “25 Days of Christmas”. Not sure where I saw it but will make my own book up for it. In this book, a memory of the day is written until Christmas. I think doing this each year then reading the ones from the past years will be fun and probably give a good laugh!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Love this planner, Andrea. You are inspiring. My grandchildren love the advent calendars we make for them each year. Happy Holidays to all!!!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I have been working on a home made advent calendar to use for the first time with my children. We usually just countdown the days until Christmas and go shopping as a family with a visit to Santa.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
We do count down to Christmas. On December 1st we get out our TWO countdowns. One is a cute santa with pockets and you move a candy cane each day until you get to Christmas Day. The second one is one my mom made when I was little. Little Bear searches his house (a new spot everyday) for Christmas love. He finally finds his family (his Christmas Love) in the living room on Christmas day. My boys love to move the candy cane and bear each day, in anticipation of Christmas.
I love your Blog. What a beautiful project you have listed today!
November 18th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Many, MANY years ago I made an advent calendar for each of my children and my niece and nephew out of felt and filled the pockets with homemade chocolates from a mold specifically for an advent calendar. My granddaughter will be old enough next year to continue the tradition, so I’ll make one for her and her brother (who is only 2 months old) this year and have it ready for the holidays next year.
I’m very excited to see what you have in store for the upcoming month or so … you are amazing, Andrea.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I have a very talented friend who made me a painted folk art ” blackboard” with a ledge to hold chalk and everyday we ” countdown ” the days until Christmas. My grandson who is five years old immediately checks out the holder as I hang it in the same place each year low enough for him to help me when he visits. We have enjoyed this gift for the past twelve years and it is dearer every year I unpack it.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Since my oldest was in kindergarten we’ve been counting the days using a cute little wooden snowman figure (purchased from a school fundraiser) that has round discs with number that hang front he front of his bely. Each day we change the numbers, counting down the days ’til x-mas.
However, this year in addition to the snowman countdown, i purchased three chocolate advent calendars for the boys to count down with!! Fun and different!
Happy Holidays~
November 18th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
We celebrate with the Advent calendar and the holiday wreath lighting the candles every week with a story.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Welcome back, Andrea!
Man do I need an organizer like this about now!
We have a handmade advent calendar where every day you turn over one piece of a larger manger scene. I love it and always have.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
No count downs, except each day, decluttering the house to get ready for the decorators, planning gatherings and then planning for quiet time for me. I hope I win this PDF file, as I have 15 CD holders that have been waiting to be decorated with a really great project like yours.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
I love your planner! We still do the chocolate Advent calendars even though the kids are grown and have done other things in the past like paper chains and then remove one each day. I did purchase the Decor Elements Countdown set so now I just need to get it made.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
What a great project!
My husband and I do not have any kids yet, so we are trying out new things every year to see which traditions we want to start when we do have our own family. One thing that has stuck for the past couple of years is a neat wooden advent calendar I found at an antique sale. The calendar is a wooden tree with hooks, and each day there is a new ornament to add. On Christmas Eve, you place the star on the top of the tree.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
I would love to win this but would also be happy to buy it! You know how much I love your projects! We do a take-off of the standard advent calender. Not so much a chocolate theme but something sweet everyday, an orange, some almond roca or even a hug.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I use my day planner and mark the days for the count down. Not a good idea because as the numbers decrease my urgency increases based on how much I still have to get done! lol

November 18th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Absolutely adorable project!!!
When I was a child my family would always count down the last 10 days till Christmas by putting the Christmas tree up on my birthday(the 15th). Since both my parents are gone now, my husband and I carry on that same tradition each year. It helps me to feel like my parents are still a part of our Christmas. Happy Holidays to you and yours! =)
November 18th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
You rock, always coming up with great gift ideas. We start every year on Dec 1st and take things out and start the holiday cheer. We do a calender countdown and glue a candy cane to the calender until the final day.
Valerie
November 18th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
I have started a tradition with my kids. We hand stamp a simple advent calendar. The kids stamp each day on a mini envelope. Then we decorate with Christmas stamps. The envelopes are hung up with mini clothespins and twine across the mantle, like a garland. In each envelope we add a family activity that needs to be completed that day. I am keeping each advent calendar in a seperate container so they can have when they get older. I like the family activities in the advent instead of candy, because it really gets us to spend more quality time together!!
I totally love your planner!!!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
We use an advent calendar to count down the days. Love your projects!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
We use the chocolate advent calendar as well as a small Santa calendar that has two blocks that you countdown the days with. wow, it’s time to get those things out soon, hey??
Love the planner, thanks for the opportunity to win it!
Alison
November 18th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I wish I had some kid-o’s to celebrate the Christmas countdown with, but not quite yet. My husband and I love to go driving to look at Christmas lights and such. Hopefully soon….
Kristi
November 18th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
My mom made the kids a Quilt that has a Christmas tree on it with ornaments. They start along the side of the quilt, and as they count down, they take them from the sides to the tree. You end with the star ornament on top.
Love the project.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
One of my favorite traditions to count down Christmas that we have done since I was a child is filling the manger with hay. My mom puts out an empty manger and the idea is that each time we did something kind for someone else (preferable anonymously), we would add a piece of straw. We work to have the manger full by the time baby Jesus arrives on Christmas morning.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Ooh, I love this project, how clever! I adore your blog, Andrea, you are so talented. Thank-you so much for sharing your work with us!
We count down to Christmas with a quilted Advent Calander that I made when I was pregnant with my first son (he’s 2 now). Christmas this year will be so much more fun now that he can understand about presents and Santa and everything!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
I love the planner. We don’t do anything special. My kids are all grown, but the grandchildren are geting more attention and learning more about traditions.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Hi Andrea and Sophie,
First of all I would like to welcome you back to the blogging world. I’m sure it must feel great to be back creating.
My favourite thing to do since I was a child is to open the chocolate advent calendar’s each year. I couldn’t wait to open the last day as it meant Santa would soon be here. I have now start the tradition with my own girls and they are just as excited as me to open them each day wondering what character would be on the chocolate that day.
Thanks for sharing the Holiday Blitz with us and I can’t wait to see the other projects.
Anne
November 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
We usually do the usual red/green paper chains with the kids. And we will be making a countdown calendar this year also.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Hi Andrea!
We do 2 things to count down….we make a paper chain with candy on the back….5 pieces for each child per day. It starts out really long, but as they cut off the candy is grows shorter and shorter. We also have a Santa advent pocket calendar where we move a little stuffed Santa marker each day. Such fun!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
I have a wooden advent calender that has cubbies for each day of the month before Christmas. I put a small treat in each cubbie and I feel like a kid when I open each one!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Thanks to Dena Rekow’s adorable cookie sheet/tins Advent calendar project, I will counting down the days with it this year. Treats will go in each tin for the kids to open.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:02 am
As usual I love your planners. When I was a child we use to do an advent calendar. I don’t do anything as an adult but I imagine I will do somthing once my husband and I have our own children.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Welcome back! This is such an awesome project! Our Holiday Tradition is getting together with my cousins and now all of our kids. We started doing this before we all got married, and had kids, and now we’re the “old” people and we watch the ‘kids’ run circles around us! We have dinner and we used to do gag gifts, but now we just get together and EAT. It is good because now that my grandparents are all gone, it keeps our family together, and gets our kids to stay in touch with each other.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:41 am
My girls always have an advent calendar to help them count down. Their favorite is one that I buy that has small chocolates behind each ‘door’. I also have a banner that I hang on the back of our front door with a snowman motif that has rows of pockets with the dates on them – you simply move the little star that’s on a piece of yarn each day. Last year when I couldn’t find the chocolate-filled advent calendars, I put small chocolates into the pockets of my snowman one. That’s how we count down the days.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:42 am
I am soo glad you are back…I missed you!
I don’t do anything special to count down the days…we’ll maybe I do the week before we get out of school. I love the friday before break…lots of good cheer in the air and lots of movies to see! Have a great day! kt
November 19th, 2008 at 12:45 am
You just made me think about the very old advent calendars we used to do as children…seems like they had a manger scene and then little windows my brother and I would pop up. We could probably hardly wait to do one day by day. I think there was always a lot of glitter on them. Thanks for making that “old” memory come back! And thanks for all the beautiful projects you share with all of us.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:54 am
Our grandkids have special Advent boxes that we fill for them every year with little gifts. They get to open a box daily after dinner and then they call us with their “news” and wish us a good night.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:08 am
Awesome planner!! If I don’t win I hope you offer the instructions for a fee.
My cousin made my family a Christmas countdown Christmas tree. It’s made of wood and stands about 8 inches tall. It has a wire shaped like a semicircle at the top, and every day you slide one bead over. The last bead for Christmas is a gold star and it ends up sitting at the top of the tree. It’s really well done, and I love the fact it’s homemade.
Thanks for offering such a great gift and look forward to all the projects this month!!

November 19th, 2008 at 1:09 am
Great project! We do an advent calender with those sick little waxy chocolates in them. They’re usually of the SpongeBob/Spiderman variety. I really need to make myself a cute advent calender…
Thanks for the chance to win!
Brandi
November 19th, 2008 at 1:10 am
Wow! All these great comments make me want to get going celebrating NOW! We mark the Sundays in Advent at church with the Advent Candle ceremony. I may have to do some cool stuff at home now, too, after reading what everyone is doing. Thanks, Andrea, for giving us the place to share this information and for your super blog!
November 19th, 2008 at 1:11 am
Since my children are no longer living at home, my Christmas countdown is very different. On the home front, I decorate the house during the Thanksgiving weekend. I am a 1st grade teacher so I plan a special activity for my students each day in December. We make ornaments, cards, etc for the children to share with their loved ones.
Thanks for the opportunity to win the tutorial.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:35 am
Great Project once again…We do an advent calender..the one with the chocolates…The kids love them…Thanks for another chance to win.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:40 am
We always had an advent calendar with candy. My kids got to have the candy on the day based on whether they were an odd or even age that year to avoid arguing over who got to have “Christmas Day” They are grown now so we have moved away from that over the last few years. Guess I have to wait for grandkids
Great project as usual.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:55 am
Wow, this is awesome. I actually don’t do anything special to count down the days. My babies are small, under two so it’s not something I have thought about and we didn’t do anything special growing up. We did put the tree up the first week of December and the week before Christmas is spent cleaning and baking!
November 19th, 2008 at 2:42 am
Love the planner. I have several of those DVD containers setting in my craftroom unloved and neglected. What a perfect project for them. As to what we do for a count down. My four kids and I read stories about Christmas every night before they go to bed. One each night starting on the First of December. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the month brings. Thanks, Tonya
November 19th, 2008 at 2:46 am
We, just like everyone else, do the chocolate advent calendars. I actually got a tree shaped box about 2 years ago for each of the kids, so I’ve been filling them. I’ve ordered the tins to do last year’s SCS advent calendar, but time’s a-wastin’!! So much to do…so little time. Love the planner! That should certainly help me! Jeannie
November 19th, 2008 at 2:52 am
We start the Christmas season by lighting our house light on Thanksgiving evening. After dinner my grandson gets to flip the switch for the lights. We always decorate the tree and put up the rest of the decorations the day following Thanksgiving. This starts the season for us. This year I will be teaching my 4 grandchildren some wonderful craft items to give their parents & other grandparents as gifts. Since everyone is budgeting, I thought this would be a fun way to teach them to be clever and resourceful. Glad to have you back, Andrea. I hope you will offer the tin planner for purchase.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:05 am
My kids do the advent calendars with chocolate. I would love to make an advent calendar for my daughter since she is younger and have a small gift in a container every day. Got to get on it though. I love this DVD planner Andrea – very nice.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:36 am
We always did an advent calendar when the kids were home. Now I just develop increasing panic with each day as I am trying to complete my 160 Christmas cards. I just started them yesterday!!!
Love your planner as well as all of your other wonderful projects. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Merry Christmas and God bless you!
November 19th, 2008 at 3:46 am
I start doing Christmas Card classes in September. I NEVER thought I’d start that early getting ready myself, but every year more & more early starters come & stamp with us.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:49 am
My kids are teenagers so we’ve really gotten away from counting down until Christmas. I miss that. Maybe that is a tradition I should bring back. If so, I love some of the different ideas that I have seen decorating mini tins and adhering them to a frame, then filling with chocolate!
The planner is awesome!
November 19th, 2008 at 4:15 am
My only son is 37 so we haven’t tracked Advent for a long time. It’s usually how many days to finish 150 things to do AND make my Christmas cards? This year however, I’m looking forward to the birth of my first grandchild, knowing that I will have lots of years to make one of these for him/her:-) I really like the planners.
November 19th, 2008 at 4:55 am
We don’t do anything right now but my son is two and I have a felt advent calendar that I play on hanging up at Christmas time and filling the days with fun Christmas events.
I love your project!
November 19th, 2008 at 4:56 am
Such a cute project!! you never cease to amaze me with your beautiful projects you create. I am making most all my gifts this year.. it would be a fantastic thing to send my daughter in the Smokeys!! Please pick me!!
) Keep up the good work Andrea!!
November 19th, 2008 at 5:00 am
Guess I’m like kids in school.. didn’t read all the way down.. I’ve made one advent calendar and making another for my grandchildren, but I just mark days off the calendar and read all the emails telling us how many days we have til Christmas.. it seems to just creep up faster and faster each year!! Love the project.. have a CD tin I could use to make one!! TFS.
November 19th, 2008 at 6:55 am
My husband and I haven’t started our own Advent calendar tradition….maybe because we don’t have kids yet?
But I remember the one at my parents so well….it was a long strip of green felt with candies tied on every day. Either my brother or I would get to untie the candy and then read Bible verses related to Jesus’ birth. Felt and yarn…gotta love the 70′s!
November 19th, 2008 at 7:21 am
Our children take out all our holiday themed books at the beginning of December and with each passing day, we read one of our favorite stories together.
November 19th, 2008 at 7:22 am
We don’t do a countdown for Christmas but i think i will begin one next year because for now my baby is too small, really love your holiday planner btw where do you buy your dvd tin ???
happy stampin’

November 19th, 2008 at 7:35 am
We have a Christmas tree with numbers that count down on it that I embellished last year. My son loves getting up in the morning and changing the numbers.
November 19th, 2008 at 7:43 am
We don’t do an advent calendar but I have a “countdown” felt “days of Christmas” that has a snowflake attached to stick in a pocket for ea. day. That’s about it since the kids got married. Love the planner. But being this far down on the totem pole the chances of being picked are “slim & NIL”!!! lol!! Good luck to the winner.
November 19th, 2008 at 7:50 am
Great planner Andrea! We have an advent calendar that we do every year. Last year, we actually did a Lego one since my son loves legos. Thanks for sharing.
November 19th, 2008 at 7:57 am
My kids and I make a project of some sort where you remove the piece each day until Christmas and they get once small piece of candy after they remove the piece.
Thanks for letting me play along.
It looks like a cute project that I would love to do.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Great planner Andrea! I used to do an advent calendar when DS was little but not that he’s 22, I miss the fun little things.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:12 am
What an absolutely fabulous project!
Our Christmas Countdown is very simple. It’s one my mom did with my brother and me when I was little. My son and daughter make paper chains 2 weeks before Christmas and hang them by their bedroom doors. Each night before bed, the rip off a link. Simple, but so much fun!
Hugs!
November 19th, 2008 at 8:12 am
welcome back Andrea, you have been missed. We have the advent calendar with chocolate and always have a religious theme. We(my daughter and I) plan Christmas baking,Christmas wrapping and movies leading up to Christmas. This is a wonderful planner. Maybe you could offer it at a nominal charge?
Looking forward to all of your ideas.Take care
Eileen
November 19th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Your the bomb! I just love this. I have tins but am afraid to try anything with them.
We used to do advent calender and candles. It really always started with St. Nicholas Day (December 6th) Something small in their shoe outside bedroom door. Good children get a treat. ( small tablet, haibands, and so on). Gotta go, looking forward to your countdown:_)

Your calendar project is awesome! We have an advent calendar we use each year.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:36 am
We use a wooden advent calendar- the one that we have has little doors that open. It’s the perfect place to hide little treats/gifts. In our house since we have 2 kids- they usually alternate days on who gets to open.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:38 am
We don’t count down anymore now that my child is grown. But we used to do the old fashioned paper chain.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:42 am
When I was growing up, we had a long strip of felt that had bows on it- each bow had a iece of candy attached. Now that I have my own kids, they LOVE the Lego Advent Calendar so we always have one of those!
This is a fablulous project, Andrea!!!! Thanks for sharing!
November 19th, 2008 at 8:44 am
We have done different things each year – years ago I made a quilted Christmas tree advent calendar that had pockets and we put candy in each pocket, we have also used the store bought calendars with chocolate, a wooden santa with little drawers, and a santa with a cane that you slide little numbered blocks off and into his sack and the Lego calendars too. This year I plan to make the one like they showed us at convention. I have all the parts except the little boxes and since I can’t find those I need to go to plan B on that part. I’m looking forward to seeing all of your ideas.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:46 am
Love your planner!!
Every year my sisters and get together and make take tags with Christmas cards. This year we took professional pictures and were making cards to use with the picture.

I hate to say it but I don’t have a tradition of counting down to Christmas. I had never heard of this growing up, our family never did anything until ‘the day’! I would love to learn some ideas and try them with my children, this sounds like it would be fun for them! I will be reading to see all the ideas
November 19th, 2008 at 8:51 am
my boys both have advent calendars filled with chocolate pieces. I did make one last year using SU items and put non chocolate items, like read book with mom, 15 min extra TV, etc… but they still like getting their nightly chocolate.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:52 am
I don’t have a countdown to Christmas, other than sheer panic as the big day approaches and I don’t have anything prepared!!
November 19th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Hi Andrea and Sophia,
I love your website and ALL of your ideas! We always buy an advent calendar with chocolate inside… gotta have the chocolate! I’ve always wanted to make one of the muffin tin advent calendars… maybe this will be the year!
Thanks for being so generous!
November 19th, 2008 at 8:57 am
I don’t know that I have a specific “countdown” but I definitely have traditions that I do on specific days prior to Christmas.
BTW – I’m glad you’re back!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:08 am
We don’t really do a count down, other than how many days do we have left to get things done in time! We usually start decorating right after Thanksgiving. I love baking Christmas cookies and bars so I start early and freeze them.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:08 am
We haven’t grasped onto any countdown things yet but I think we need to do an advent calendar of some sort after reading some other comments. Everyone has such great ideas here and your project is the best!!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:12 am
that planner is awesome!!! we countdown the days with sharing each morning something we’re thankful for and we write it out and put in the advent calendar (instead of taking something out). Then on Christmas morning we take all the “thankful’s” out and read them together.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:14 am
Unfortunately, countdown at our household is more of a panic-style countdown….Yikes! Only XX more days to get my shopping done!
We celebrate the holidays by decorating in snowmen in every room in the house (wishful thinking here in Texas!). I started decorating in snowmen rather than traditional decor because my kids complained that the holidays and all the decorations weren’t up long enough. Now, with a snowman based decor theme, we keep them up until just before Valentine’s! So, it feels like Christmas a whole lot longer.
Your Christmas planner is adorable and could be adapted to make a really cute birthday planner too.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:19 am
I am a planner from the word ‘go’ … lists, lists, and more lists…that’s how I do it. I set goals … such a great feeling when I cross them off! This is a darling project!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:21 am
I love the altered tin. you always have such great ideas. Thanks for sharing. As for me, my kids are older so we don’t need to countdown, but one of our markers is Dec11–that’s the day after my son’s birthday and the day the tree goes up.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:28 am
We usually have an Advent calendar that we count down the days. I like to send one to each of my sons away at college too. We also celebrate St. Nick’s day and get little gifts in anticipation of Christmas. Love the planner. It’s gorgeous and so useful!
Hugs,
Donna
November 19th, 2008 at 9:29 am
We do a tradition Advent Calendar, my daughter is 12 and still loves to do it! Just love to keeping that holiday spirit, even when they are getting bigger! Love the planner, thanks for all of your wonderful ideas!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Welcome back!! I’m really excited to see what you have in store for us! I don’t really do anything special to countdown the holidays…christmas is not really a huge thing in my family. Thanks for the chance to win!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:33 am
I remind my kiddos every morning exactly how many days till Christmas! I also announce how many shopping days left, but strictly for my hubby’s benefit!!! Love the day planner!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:35 am
My sister made me a Santa advent calendar quite a few years back from wood, which she tole painted. He has a Christmas tree beside him and in his bag holds ornaments that my children (now 21 and 18) would take turns each day adding to the tree. I still get it out and “countdown” the days till Christmas.
(love your dvd tin) MaryJo
November 19th, 2008 at 9:37 am
We have an advent quilt that we hang up. Each “pocket” has a candy treat and a message inside. We like to bake cookies and decorate the house right after Thanksgiving. Love the wonderful tin idea. As a new demo I love to stop by your site and get inspired! Thank you for sharing!
November 19th, 2008 at 9:42 am
I have a advent calendar that is about 25 years old, at he beginning of the months the pockets have dollars or quarters in them as it gets closer to Christmas it has treats or games in it.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:47 am
how fabulous!!!
besides an advent calender… not a whole lot but it seems like each year my bf and i come up with new traditions just for us.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:50 am
My children are grown with children of their own now. But when they were little, many moons ago!, I made a wall hanging with little pockets for each day (which is still around somewhere) and we put mini candy canes in each pocket.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Love this!!! Great job!!
You are the best.
Debi
November 19th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Love this project! We don’t usually do a countdown, but when the kids get out of school we try to make a different kind of cookie each day.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:59 am
A few years ago I purchased a really cute Advent Calendar from Hallmark. It reminded me of the one my family used when I was a child. I have since made a few different clipboard advent calendars…lots of reminders as to how many days till Christmas. Thanks for the chance to win directions to this awesome project:) This would really come in handy to keeping organized this Holiday season.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:02 am
I love that planner, so very festive!!!
We love to watch the 25 days of Christmas on ABC Family, right now they are having a countdown to the start of the 25 days of Christmas

Cute planner! I love that paper! When my children were smaller we made construction paper rings and snipped off one each day! The boys loved doing that and couldn’t wait to be the one to cut the ring. I am not sure why that was such a big deal, but they all wanted their turn at cutting. Of course when the days were shorter, mom or dad would have to lift them up to reach the rings.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:04 am
My grown kids (and grandkids) want to spend Christmas in Florida, instead of wintery Ontario, Canada. We are this year, so we are just plain counting down the days!
Your project is very unique. Luv it.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:25 am
You come up with the most fun projects. My family is all grown and I just watch the days go by to fast. I hope I get everything done that time allows. Merry Christmas
Shirley
November 19th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Oh my gosh! So cool! I love this little gift.
As a countdown to Christmas, I usually celebrate Thanksgiving and then the day after do the crazy early morning sales and then put up my inside and outside decorations over the weekend.
Erin M.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Wow, that tin looks incredible!! To count down the days of Christmas my family crosses off the days in December on a calendar and of course my sister and I get a chocolate calendar.
Erin
November 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I don’t do a personal countdown, but I do 12 weeks of Christmas for my customers, emailing one new Christmas idea each week.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am
We always put the Christmas tree up the day after Thanksgiving, and that begins our countdown. This year my son is 15 months old, so we have some strategic planning to do so as to avoid broken ornaments and premature unwrapped presents. I am so excited to count down the days until Christmas with him. He is such a gem!
I love your work! You are amazing.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Thanks for the great idea. They are wonderful! I have these tins and wasnt sure what to do with them. I think I will make 2 for my boys so they can countdown the days for Christmas and also when their dad gets home from his 1 year deployment in the middle east.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:39 am
My mother made us a Precious Moments advent calendar several years ago. I have four kids and they fight over who gets to put the first piece up on the calendar, because they figured out that the person who puts the first piece on gets to put the last piece on. We always save the piece with the baby Jesus for the last day.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:39 am
what a fun idea and what a great giveaway!!!
It’s been a year since I created two advent christmas tress out of match boxes. They both have twenty four drawers: the little one holds pieces of paper with either a bible scripture and/or an activity to do that day, the big one has a small toy for each of my two kids. So far, we have all enjoyed this new Christmas tradition.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:46 am
We do several things to countdown the days until Christmas. We have a fun book we read every year “The Christmas Mystery”. We read a chapter each night. Our kids also do the paper advent calendar, opening a window each day. I also have a quilted wall hanging with a Christmas tree and hanging ornaments. Each morning, you move an ornament from the background to the tree. Thanks for offering the fun prize!
November 19th, 2008 at 10:49 am
My husband leaves me a note every morning throughout the year and so when Christmas comes around he will start about 15 days before and write… only 13 more days until Christmas… only 9 more days until Christmas!!
November 19th, 2008 at 10:51 am
So cute!
Could be rough…!
We have advent calendars I made when the kids were born, in my pre-stamping days (Gasp- is there such a thing??). They are wooden, with little pegs to add lifesavers, and are numbered so they know how many days they have left until Christmas. When they were small, they hung far down the wall– as they’ve grown, the calendars have moved up and up and up…. this year we’ll keep one put away, since for the first time my oldest won’t be home for the holidays.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:51 am
We have a countdown santa that hangs from our pantry door and it has a candy cane that is moved each day. We also do the chocolate calendar thing. This year I believe I’m going to do little tins from michaels and make each one have a little treat. We will see if I can get it done.
LOVE YOUR STUFF!
November 19th, 2008 at 10:58 am
We do a count down at the university where I work. As a staff, we have gathered a large collection of “snow people” over the years. Each day after Thanksgiving, we add one more “snow person” to the window ledges in our central area – the scene grows, as does our anticipation for the winter holidays!
I love the planner! What a great gift you and your sister give to the community with your creativity! Thank you for all you do!

November 19th, 2008 at 11:03 am
This is beautiful. We just use the chocolate advent calendars, but I did see one done in a picture frame, that hopefully I will be able to get done soon. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:03 am
We don’t really have a countdown for Christmas – but I am inspired to do one this year! Thanks for this awesome tutorial blitz and a chance to win too!! You are awesome!!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Again, you did something very special! Wish I lived closer to you that I could have attended! I get so excited see all your projects. Have purchased tutorials in the past, and I offer to send you $$$ to purchase this one!!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:10 am
We do a chocolate advent calendar – one for each boy (I have two). But I have been thinking about making one of those great advent calendars I keep seeing popping up everywhere. Wanted to say I love your blog and check it almost everyday.

November 19th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Hey Andrea,
Another wonderful project!! Thanks for the opportunity to win.
We do the chocolate advent calendars in our home.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Such a cute project. My mother in law has a lollipop advent calendar and my son is the only grandchild who lives close enough to enjoy the lollipops so we go over everyday to eat candy. Would you be willing to sell the PDF file. I would love to be able to purchase it. It’s a great gift.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:15 am
We have a handmade advent calendar made of felt. It uses velcro to decorate the tree-one ornament for each day. The 24th is a velcro Santa to represent his coming that evening. We don’t emphasize santa in our house but it is fun to decorate the tree and countdown to the big day.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:16 am
We dont do anything to special but we do like to listen to christmas music and go look at all the christmas lights. . . . Btw is this cute little planner going to be available for the monthly subscription thing for demo kits?
November 19th, 2008 at 11:17 am
When my children were in college, they would receive weekly Christmas care packages, stamped in a wild and crazy fashion on the outside. The mail clerks at the dorms loved it! The packages included room decorations, lights, small tree, snacks and homemade Christmas cookies.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Since my kids are teenagers now, we don’t do any certain type of countdown to Christmas like we used to do with our advent calendar. I now just begin decorating for the holidays the day after Thanksgiving. I light holiday smelling candles in the evenings and start listening to holiday music. I have already started my shopping so I will wrap presents in the evenings so I am ready for the special day. I also make my holiday cards and start to send them out around December 1st. This year, I will be doing some baking early and freeze each item into small batches so I can take out a small batch of each assortment to bring a cookie platter to family’s houses that we visit during the holiday. I am even considering making my own candy this year. I just love crafting and making things for the holidays. To me, that makes everything much more special!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:23 am
We put on christmas music and make hot chocolate when we decorate our tree. We haave a chocolate advent calendar that we use. And On Christmas eve, all of my 6 children get to open 1 gift each, The “special” gift that I get them every year…Pajamas!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:27 am
I love the planner. When my children were young we had a chalkboard with Santa and the days leading up to Christmas. Each day they would take turns marking off the calendar. We of course had the advent calendar with the either chocolate or little gifts those varied from year to year. Now I have the grandchildren to love and spoil. Have a great Holiday season.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:29 am
We have so many things planed a church and with church family that the time goes by before we know it. The planner would help amist all that.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:32 am
When my children were still home we celebrated it w/ a little tree that sit on a box w drawers. In each of the 35 drawers was a little ornament to put on the tree. Since this was mine when I was a child I guess it could be classified as an antique now
Now I just buy or make the advent calendar for my grandchildren.
You have such great ideas. Thanks for sharing!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:33 am
This planner is so cute. To count down the days, I have a clipboard that I decorated with stamps and DSP, and you change the # of days till Christmas.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:39 am
We have three different advent calendars, and each of the kids take turns changing the numbers on each one. I get to take my turn each evening. We have a book that has a hymn, a scripture and a story that we sing and read each night of December. It really helps us keep the true meaning of Christmas in our home!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Great planner! Maybe I’d be more organized with something like that! Since all our kids are grownups and live far away we don’t do anything for the countdown anymore. When the youngest was home we’d start with decorating the tree the day after Thanksgiving. Then came baking cookies and candy. Matt would watch the gifts starting to show up under the tree. Boy, the memories….
Thanks, Andrea!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:40 am
during the weekends we bake, hang decorations, shop, wrap, sing songs…etc due to the weekdays being so busy with school and work. So, the weekends are totally family/holiday time.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I LOVE the planner…great job! I wish I could say I was organized enough to have a countdown, but I’m not. I don’t have children yet, but I’ve seen tons of cute ideas on SCS that I’m sure I’ll be making some once children are in the picture!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I have children so we don’t wait until December to do a countdown – we are already counting down! For December, however, we have an advent calendar and inside each is directions for a scavenger hunt just for a wee item.
I love your blog and am inspired by your ideas. Can’t wait to check in every day and get to work!
November 19th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I do an Advent calendar every year, and we have an Advent wreath that we use to mark the 4 Sundays before Christmas.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Wow…this is awesome and I just ordered a whole lot of the DVD tins. We have always had an advent calendar while my children were growing up with a special treat each day of December. Now, I have passed that tradition on to my granddaughters.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Having been raised by a German mom and living a good portion of my young life in Germany, we took on a few of the traditions of Germany. Every year my mom buys all the grandkids Advents calendars with German chocolate in them and the kids enjoy opening the little doors to see what shape the chocolates will be.
Another tradition is the advents wreath that my mom purchased for me many years ago that we light the 4 Sundays before Christmas and we sing Christmas Caroles and enjoy hot chocolate and hot tea.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
I don’t have any sort of countdown, there are certain parties and events that happen every year that kind of keep me on track. I have not figured out how to be organized, I would love to be. I am in awe of the way you are able to put together and organize these things.
Dana
November 19th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Our family has a wooden tree that has numbers on it. Each day we take turns flipping the next number until it is Christmas. We have been doing this for a number of years. However, I have seen a lot of wonderful advent ideas out there this year. I may have to add another one to our tradition.
Sincerely,
Amanda Schieldt
November 19th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
We have a little wooden Christmas tree that we hang a new ornament on each day. My daughter just can’t wait to pick out which ornament will be hung that day. I love seeing her get so excited about the little stuff.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
We are going to start a new tradition this year. I am going to make an advent calendar and fill it with little things for all 4 of the kids. They keep asking me for the chocolate ones but we still have a ton of Halloween candy and I don’t want to do candy for every day. I love this organizer and all of your projects you do. Thanks for being such a great inspiration.
November 19th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I totally love the planner idea. My daughter and I love to do the count down. We have a new little project for each day. It started out the 12 days of Christmas, but sometimes becomes the 15 days or 21 days, depending on what we come up with. Since I am a newer demonstrator, I think it may be the 30 days of Christmas
Thanks for all of your creative ideas and welcome to your sister!!!
November 19th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
As a kid, we would always go to Oma and Opa’s home on the four Sundays before Christmas and light a candle on the Weihnachtspyramide. My grandparents Christmas pyramid was well over two feet tall and beautifuly crafted from different colored woods. Only on Christmas Eve would we light all the candles and watch it spin at its fastest.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
We have a large felt Christmas tree with pockets at the bottom that hold small felt ornaments to hang on the tree each day of December. I made this tree some 30 years ago for our children. Even though they no longer live at home, when they stop by, they always look at the tree and check the pockets like they did so many years ago.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
The Christmas holiday is the one time during the year when all our families get together to celebrate the holidays. My mom’s side on Christmas eve, my dad’s side on Christmas night. Love your project!
November 19th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
We don’t do anything special for a countdown but my husband already has the Christmas lights up and running and it’s only Nov 20!!! He is just way to excited this year!! I love the planner. How do you come up with all these GREAT ideas!! I need to eat what you eat!!
November 19th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
You are so awesome! I can’t wait to see all the great things you and your sis have come up with! We have a painted wooden Christmas tree my mom made years ago that has a wire that has wooden beads on it. You push one bead over every day and the last one is a golden star that sits on top of the tree when it’s Christmas.
thanks for the chance to win!

This year I made a countdown calendar with Creative Memories products. I know….shame on me for not using SU! but it was such a cute idea that my consultant shared I just had to do it.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I can’t wait to see the great projects you and Sophia come up with! The CD tin planner is wonderful. Since my son is grown, I haven’t had a countdown for awhile now. This year I am going to journal and or take pictures of each day beginning December 1st. I recently took a mini scrapbook class and we made a cute little book to capture the 25 days of Christmas.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
we call it moms 25 crafts till christmas, Everyday my 3 boys and i spend about 1 hour dong holiday crafts anything from cards for troops to shopping for a toy to put in the local toy drive.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
I’ve had a felt advent calendar that we bought one year, but I saw a cookie sheet one online and thought, I could make that!, and I did! So we’ll be using mine this year and I think it will be a lot of fun!
Love your planner! You amaze me as always with your creativity!!
November 19th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
We don’t do anything specific to “count down” to Christmas (especially since my daughter is almost 20). But I do decorate for Christmas right after Thanksgiving. I refuse to do it before that, even if our ground is covered with snow.
I love this project, and I have to tell you that ALL of your projects inspire me. Thank you so much for sharing!
November 19th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Love the blog by the way. We do an advent clander on a tree that has diffrent toys presents fro each day. I also enjoy doing a mini album with each day recaping the previous year to give as gifts to grandparents and aunts.
hugs!
love the project too. great idea
November 19th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I make a homeade Advent Calendar. Behind each door is an activity or special treat for the kids like their choice of supper. On the 24th, it is watch a movie. We have tortiere on Christmas Eve and watch ‘The Polar Express’.
November 19th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
i don’t usually do anything special to countdown to the holidays….but this year my little one is old enough to get “excited” so i think i will make some sort of countdown calendar.
November 19th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
wow. glad to have you back. I love to see all your posts and tutorials. Thanks for sharing this opportunity with us to win some great tutorials.
November 19th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
oh man, i forgot to answer your question! I have made a homemade countdown calendar that the kids get to change the number of days till. Their grandma also buys the store bought chocolate countdowns that they do as well. thanks again
November 19th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
My kids cut out strips of red and green paper and create a chain. There is one link for each day remaining until Christmas. We remove one link each day we move closer to Christmas.
November 19th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
What an adorable project! When I was a kid we used to have a chocolate advent calendar to open up. As soon as I have my own kids I plan to make a fun advent calendar for them.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
We don’t do anything in particular to ‘count down’. Our kids’ level of excitement is usually a pretty good indicator of how close it is to the big day
Love your project!!
November 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
We begin on the first Sunday of Advent, using the wreath and candles, special prayers at mealtime, and a velcro “calendar” that slowly builds a nativity scene. Then we celebrate the real 12 days of Christmas from Dec. 25 through the Epiphany. We homeschool now, and have been wanting to change some traditions to be more in line with our faith, and less attached to the cultural aspect. Thanks for asking! It was fun to read some of the replies.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
We count down to my nephew AND cousin’s birthdays!!! They both were born on Christmas day… so we just count down to that great day
November 19th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I wish I lived in Canada so I could attend this class.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
embarassingly, we do the commercial advent calendars you buy in the store. this planner is amazing!
November 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
We don’t really do anything special since it is just the two of us now. When my daughter was little I used to do an advent tower with little gifts each day. Thanks for the chance to win.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
When our kids lived at home (they are now all married) we would read a different Christmas book every night starting the day after Thanksgiving. It was really a fun thing!
November 19th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Oh my gosh!! That is AWESOME!!! Will you please consider making it available as one of your classes we can buy??? Unless, of course, I win it!! LOL
I made a cookie sheet advent calendar that a friend designed a few years ago and my kids just LOVE putting up a new magnet each day and counting down until Christmas!!

Yes…on November 30th, we(my daughters and I) bake cookies. Every other year one child gets to pick the cookie cutter. We make 25 cookies. Wrap them in cellophane and hang them on our mantle. Day one comes-after dinner we take the cookie and each member of our family (4 plus the dog) get a bite of it.
It is so funny…seeing us all sit on the floor in a circle, passing this cookie around. Once each person gets their piece we eat it!
That is our countdown tradition.

I love your Holiday Blitz plans and hope to participate every day. My son and I always countdown to Christmas with a daily advent calendar and candy ritual. For many years I purchase the premade calendars and they came with candy. Now I have a nice one and fill it myself with our favorite candy. He’s 19 now, so he and share the goodies.

Hi Andrea,
What a great way to kick of the holiday season! It’s nice to see you inspired again what with all the chaos you’ve been coping with! This is my first year making an advent calendar for my two daughters, and I’m going to put in little Purdy’s Snowmen for them to open each day, I think they will be delighted, and I look forward to doing this every year from now on!
November 19th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
These days I decorate bit by bit and from the beginning of December I love to have one of those special advent candles that burns down about half an inch every day. I love this ritual in the morning (I’m not much of a morning person), having tea and some cookies and watching the candle burning down slowly.
I’m so looking forward to see all your ideas!
Greetings from Germany
Nina

We do a family newsletter that circulates each day from Dec 1st on and goes down the list from family to family to add their current family events, then at the end we all get a copy to keep everyone that we don’t see often up to date.
November 19th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
We don’t have that one thing we do. I have wrapped Christmas books up and had my kids open one a day for the 12 days before Christmas. I would love to find the perfect and fun family countdown that becomes tradition, but haven’t yet. BTW, LOVE the planner!!!!
November 19th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Seasons Greetings,
We have many Christmas traditions in our family. We celebrate the count down to the special day with planned events – such as a the Nutcracker Ballet – One new event we are planning this year is to attend the Bethlehem Walk where a local town transforms part of their town into Bethlehem – with live animals, market places and all the works! ( I am really excited to take my children to this even though they are 16, 20 and 21) We try to do a good deed for someone each day in December too. On the evening of December 5th we celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas (google for details) One of the traditions we have always done is on Christmas eve we go to Church and then make a Birthday cake or Pie for Jesus – After all its a birth we are celebrating!~ Before anyone can open anything on Christmas morning we pray and then sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.
November 19th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
What a great planner! We countdown to Christmas using an Advent calendar that I made last year using Beate’s tutorial on SCS.
November 19th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
We start off the countdown to Christmas on December 1st by decorating our home; trees, lights, decorations everywhere, Christmas carols, etc. We have done the advent calendar in the past, but this year we are doing something a little different. We are going to learn how others celebrate Christmas; what their traditions are, things they eat (which we will eat too). It will be a fun experience and a great way to teach our kids about the world.
Great holiday project!
November 19th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I have been reading your blog for a year now and I am always impressed with your generosity . I am so excited about the tutorials and projects from you and your sister through the end of the month YAY!
We start on the 15th of December and do a diffetent fun thing every day. It may be as simple as all watching a Christams Movie togetheror driving around to look at the lights. We also do things like make an ornament for family memebers and bake cookies to hand out.
The most important thing we do is read the birth of Christ on Christmas eve.
While we don’t do a formal advent calender (I may try making one this year) my son loves crossing the days off on the calender.
Thank you for all the hard work you ladies do for all of us.
November 19th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
When my kids were little I started buying them the chocolate advent calendars – with a choclate every day, counting down to Christmas. Now that they’re older, they don’t always eat the chocolate every day because they’re so busy – but they do get around to it. One year I almost didn’t buy them and I got grief over it!!!!- so the tradition carries on!!!
November 19th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Oh my goodness I love this project!!! Pick me please. I have started to do my baking and shopping ahead of time with a November 30 deadline. This way I can just enjoy the month of December and all of the festivities with no stress.

We would normally do an advent calendar if I remember to get it out of storage in time!
November 19th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
My kids are all grown up, so I don’t really do the advent calendars and acttivities anymore. However, I do still put up my wall decoration that has little numbered trees, so you change the number each day to countdown to Christmas. I’m looking forward to having a house full of grandchildren someday and then I will start the fun things again!
November 19th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
My daughter creates a simple paper chain at the beginning of Dec and thus begins our countdown. Simple but fun.

We have a magnetic advent calendar. There are little doors for the 25 days of Christmas and each one opens to reveal a magnetic piece of the nativity scene. In addition, I place 4 little pieces of candy for my four kids. It’s a wonderful family tradition now!
November 19th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
I am of Italian origin so I bake plates and plates of Italian cookies that the recipes have been handed down in my family for generations. I’m the last girl however so the tradition will probably die with me!!
November 19th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I haven’t used a calendar before since most holidays we travel to see family since we are military and live so far away. This year I am using the Christmas Countdown from the Decor Elements since we are having our first baby, one that we have been trying for-for 10 years, we are making some new traditions.
November 19th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
We don’t do for 24 days but we do a 12 days of Christmas. We go for 12 days and leave something sweet or something fun at someone door step for 11 nights. We try to leave it without them catching us. Along with the sweet treat we leave a piece of the navitity and then on the last night we reveal ourselves and give the last 3 piece of the set to them and sing carol. It has taught my kids it is just as important to give than to recieve.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
My kids love to make cut out sugar cookies, they just don’t like to eat them! I love the peanut butter cookies with the big Hershey Kiss in the middle.
It depends on how many visitors I expect over the holidays as to how many I make. This year I’m hosting Christmas, so I’ll be making lots.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
We don’t do anything really exciting to count down the days other than have our regular calendar at kids level on the fridge so they can see what the plans are. It seems like there is a special event every day…whether it is a dinner with a relative, or making christmas cookies on the weekend or cutting down our tree etc. Lots of work to be done in very little time
Like others, I think I may have to make an advent calendar or christmas countdown calendar pretty soon…there are just so many cute samples out there – it’s hard to choose just one!
November 19th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Our family always used the little chocolate premade countdowns until last year when I made a simple project for 25 children to do. It involves stamps, numbers and velcro.
I love all of your projects!
November 19th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Our girls are now 3.5 & 1.5 so we’ll be doing an Advent Calendar card that Grandma sent from England. And we’ll start creating new traditions this year since Elizabeth is old enough.
November 19th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
This is so darned cute that I am going to make some up right away, and if SU runs out of Ski Slope DP, they can hold you personally responsible as everyone will need to order some after seeing these projects! Thank you for sharing….
November 20th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Since we always go to visit my daughter for Christmas (They have to work and it is a 9 hr drive), I generally just decorate my fireplace. I put up a garland and hang pictures of me, my husband, my daughter, my son in law and my grandbaby girl. I love your project and hope to win.
Thanks for sharing.

You are so wonderfully creative Andrea. I love your work and the classes you design. You are an inspiration to me and I am in awe of your ability to juggle all of your children, your hubby and your grandparents. You are truly an angel and honestly I don’t know where you are getting the energy but I sure would like some of it (heehee). Thanks for all the wonderful things you share.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:04 am
What a great project. You are amazing.
We have a calendar that is from Christmas Around the World, that I bought the year I got married. That was 21 years ago. Everday day it gives a suggestion on how to make that day more special. The kids love it and look forward to flipping it each morning.
Thanks for all you do.
Denise

We have a wood block calendar and each day my sister and I take turns to change the days.
November 20th, 2008 at 8:51 am
I do the 12 days of Christmas for my kids with little gifts each day, and we read two different books–the Christmas story and the Christmas Carol which is divided into 25 little books so you get part of the story each day.
November 20th, 2008 at 9:49 am
We don’t have any traditions yet so to speak but it getting me thinking. I love baking so Christmas is big for me. With the combination of the Su stuff, I am able to WOW the recipients, I love it. The favourite Christmas cookie is a hazelnut shortbread with a dolop of white chocolate on top. They are the best. Add 1 cup of ground skinned hazelnuts to your normal shortbread recipe, drop by spoon on cookie sheet, flatten with fingers or with fork, then bake. When they are done, melt some white chocolate and drizzle or dip or drop a spoonful on top. The kids can even help. They are very tasty.
Cheers,
SG from Toronto, ON with 2″ of snow this morning!
November 20th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
yes. I teach first grade and we do a bell with the saying about from December 1st till Christmas. My kidders take one link off each day. It gets us all excited. I have second and third students from the same families and they can’t wait to make their own bell. Of course I now use SU cardstock.

We purchase a Lego advent calendar each year. We like building the pieces and adding them to my sons tree!
November 20th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
No I haven’t made cookies for years now. The children are grown and have families of their own. Pecan Nut Cups are our favorite, but since we don’t need the calories they are only made for very special occasions.
I also want to thank you for sharing your creativity. I’m always amazed at what can be done.
November 20th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Last year my son and daughter-in-law baked cookies with their teenagers, and they recorded parts of the whole event. They had Christmas music playing, kids singing along and tasting cookies, some messing around of course (flour on faces); they made a DVD for each set of grandparents for our gift. It is something we’ll treasure!
Our favorite cookies are making biscotti and then enjoying them with coffee.
November 20th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
I love advent calendars and each year I create a new one. Although my all time favorite is the one from Starbucks with little drawers filled with chocolate!
I feel lucky!
November 20th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Although I always bake about 12 different types of cookies for gifting, my family’s favorite tradition is our gingerbread creation. For 8 years, our best friends and us design a gingerbread theme, bake the pieces and decorate for hours (done over three days). We then donate this to our local hall and it is raffled off as a fundraiser. Our kids (combined) aged 12,9,8,7,6 also make their own houses, decorate them and share them with their classes at school. I’ve made an album with each year’s theme which range from town square to Santa’s Village to Castle and Ski Lodge. This year’s them is a grain elevator and cars, since we are farmers. Enjoy the Christmas season!
November 20th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I used to bake all the time when our youngest was at home. Now, with the economy the way it is, I plan on cookies, candy, and fudge as gifts. I’ll probably make about 6 different varieties of cookies, 2 or 3 different candies, and 4 or 5 varieties of fudge. I haven’t pulled out my cookbooks yet but snickerdoodles will be one of the cookies.
November 20th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
All my little ones have flown the coup so no advent calendar here. But do use the advent wreath with candles. Enjoy your website so much. Thanks for this and a chance to win. Sincerely, Jody
November 21st, 2008 at 12:11 am
How do I handle Holiday gift giving? I try to MAKE every single thing I give, but sometimes I start in Aug or Sept picking up little things I know people could use or like. As for extended family, it’s usually a card, a handmade book, or a basket of baked goodies or fruits, or even something a-typical of the Southwest (dried chili peppers and seasonings). We don’t give individual presents to those outside the immediate family.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:23 am
Every yeart to count down the days until Christmas we have an advent wreath. we light a new candle every Sunday and we read a Christmas story togehter as a family. the kids love to light the candles and we all take turns reading. the first week I always read “The Gift of the Magi”. I think my kids know the story by heart. We all look forward to Sundays for the lighting of the wreath, Dad always lights the first candle.

We have an advent calendar with pockets and a little mouse that moves from pocket to pocket every day. We still use it even though our sons are in their late 20′s.
You have a wonderful blog and I love to visit to see your great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:15 am
We don’t do anything to count down the days until Christmas, but my sister and I have a phrase we’ve used since we were kids. We continue to wish each other a “Happy Christmas Eve Eve” on Dec. 23. We just think it’s funny I guess.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:40 am
we do an advent activity. We have the advent candles and light them each night of advent and do a Bible lesson centered around the significance of the colors of advent and the meaning. Then each child gets to open a very small gift, just trinkets really, such as an ornament, nativity piece, chapstick, ect. The kids look forward to it and its fun selecting little things for them.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:47 am
We get out our nativity sets, Christmas tree and do the advent calendars. We also sleep around the tree on Christmas eve. Love the planner!!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:35 pm
We always do the chocolate advent calendar. And some years we have added in an extra special advent calendar made for that year. When the whole family was here we also had a family advent wreath celebration each week . this year we are only 2 and very busy – so i plan to take a few hrs from my busy schedule and count down with a new project each day inspired by the blogs I read.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Very cute planner! Thanks for sharing. We don’t do anything to count down to Christmas although I’ve been enjoying seeing the various Advent calendars everyone has been sharing. Have a great weekend!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Great Idea!!
We give gifts to every member of the family. We all (15 of us) spend the entire day together at my parents’ home on Christmas day. We have a wonderful meal together and open presents! My dad reads the Christmas story to all of us before we open the gifts.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Sour Cream Apple Pie and homemade lefse would have to be my 2 top holiday favorite treats. For the past couple of years, my dad and I have tried to make lefse for our family. It’s a lot of work, but for those that love to eat it…it is definitely worth all the hassle. The store-bought “stuff” just doesn’t compare.
The Sour Cream Apple Pie is also a homemade treat that we typically only make for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
We usually skip all the dainties to prevent nibbling and have more munchie kind of food. We only make one desert and it is an apple, pear, cranberry crumble that is so yummy. We also have a surf and turf night on Boxing Day- take a break from the turkey!
November 21st, 2008 at 11:41 pm
I always make cottage crepes, a recipe from my mother’s mother and I actually believe it goes back many generations, although there is no one left to ask any more. It is 100% NOT fat free, takes a whole afternoon to make, and is so worth it. Everyone gobbles them up. To me, the best part is the decades or more of tradition. Also, my daughter-in-law learned to make peroghies from my husband’s mother (no proper Christmas meal is complete with out these) so now, we have two great traditional dishes, one from each side of the family. Judi
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:32 pm
We have two traditional favorites (one from my side and one from my husband’s side). My mother started this over 50 yrs ago..green bean casserole (not the one with cream of mushroom soup!) This is made with several quarts of green beans (home canned is best) and chopped onions and chopped raw bacon. This is added to large pan with beans and enought water to come to just the top of the beans. Bring to boil and simmer for 4-6 hrs. (they will not be mushy but keep their form) Then I drain all the liquid (except for a small amount into separate pan for later use. Put pan back onto simmer heat and add 1-2lb. box of velveeta that has been cubed. Put cover on and melt. Once melted pour into casserole dish and set overnight and heat at 350 degrees about 1 hr. before you eat. Yummy!
The other favorite is spaghetti and cheese made with colby and longhorn colby cheeses (also a quarter of butter and milk) Gosh I am hungry…
Andrea, love your Holdiday Blitz!
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:35 pm
We start on the night of Thanksgiving and put our Christmas tree up. Turn off all the lights except the Christmas tree lights and listen to Christmas music and then break out our collection of Christmas movies. We try to watch them for sure on weekends or lazy weekend afternoons (but there are not too many of them). We try to celebrate the calm, thankful, quite time before Christmas eve. The best part of Christmas for us is the reflective time and we try to appreciate each and every day.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I wrap 24 of my children’s holiday books and each day they open one and we read it. On the last night they open “twas the night before Christmas” It is a tradition they love so much that this year I am giving the same thing to my nephews so they can start the tradition too.
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Every year we talk about trying something new but we always end up with our favorite..lobster tails and filet mignon. Maybe this year we try something new like sushi or so. After diner we all cuddle up around the tree and open our presents. The next day we will cook mostly another big meal together.
November 22nd, 2008 at 10:26 pm
WhenI was little my Grandma and I made a macaroni tree! We took a cardboard cone and covered it in different pasta and then spray painted it gold. It will always be my favorite tree as it holds so many childhood memories.
November 23rd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
I am always most grateful for time spent with family and friends, and this year I am really grateful for 2 weeks off to do lots of fun stuff, including stamping!
November 24th, 2008 at 12:04 am
No, we don’t do anything special to countdown.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:29 am
My daughter sends me to bed early and tells me she is going to bed also. I then hear her getting all of the Christmas stuff out of the closet and bringing downstairs. When I get up in the morning, I have a beautiful tree decorated… She is so proud she did it all by herself! I look forward to her doing this every year and pretend that I don’t hear a thing!
November 24th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
We don’t have a special countdown that we do year after year although I’ve seen so much inspiration to start this tradition this year. Your planner is absolutely fantastic!!!!
November 24th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
The best way to give to others is to do random acts of kindness all the time, like shovelling an elderly neighbors walk, baking extra cookies and giving them to neighbors, donating gently used toys and clothes to others, leaving a cart in the lot so someone else doesn’t have to dig for change for one, and just generally being kind and helpful to all of those around you.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
How can you reach out and touch someone?? Make a “soldier” shoebox to send to the troops overseas, or make one for a child. Most churches are sponsoring the Angeltrees and shoeboxes for children, plus the soldier ones. It’s really fun shopping for little kids!!
November 27th, 2008 at 1:14 am
My all time Christmas movie is It’s a Wonderful Life. The reason why its my favorite is because it makes me think about how thankful we should be about our lives and blessings.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:57 am
The grandkids do an advent calendar and keep us up to date on how many days are left. We watch all the cartoon movies (Santa Claus is Coming to Town, etc.) and “Jack Frost”. Make cookies and chex mix. Guess some of that is not really a “count down”, but more like traditional. Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season.
December 11th, 2009 at 4:08 am
We still have the original “crewel work” tree sewn on burlap by my Granny-Jean. There are 25 days on our tree and 25 pockets on the bottom. Each day 1 hand stitched ornament goes on a different branch. For 25 years my brothers Lance (31) and Charlie (39) still argue about the star vs. candy cane for the tree topper. They both drive 30 min each way to my Moms to sneakly switch out the tree topper on the calendar. I’m 43 and I see no change in sight, I love it, it makes me feel like a little girl again.
The planner is stellar! I hope you can consider letting us purchase the tutorial at some point, or at least something close. Happy Holidays!!!
