A Card “Just for You”

Posted on: Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

OvalAll2

Today’s card is another one that I’d classify as being out of my “comfort zone” – the reason being, I’m not really used to having so much white space on my card and having so few layers.   Even when I was a beginning stamper and my creations were super simple, I almost never created white cards and pretty much always layered my Designer Paper onto cardstock before matting it onto my card front.  This is also not a usual style of card for me but I think I like it nonetheless.

In the five years that I’ve been creating cards I’ve found that the best way to develop your creative and artistic skills is to constantly try new things and force yourself out of your comfort zone – whether it be with the color combination, card layout, accessories – whatever.  Most often you’ll probably surprise yourself and like what you end up creating, but even if you don’t, it’s still a learning experience because you find out what “doesn’t work” *lol*.

OvalAll

Here’s how I made today’s card:

  1. Take a 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece of Whisper White CS and fold it in half with your bone folder to create your card base.
  2. Emboss the front of the Whisper White card using a Big Shot and the Stampin’ Up! Backgrounds I template with the flowers and dotted “vines”.
  3. Scallop the left-hand edge of the Whisper White card using the Scallop Edge punch.  Punch a hole in the center of each scallop using a 1/16″ handheld circle punch.
  4. Take a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ piece of Textured So Saffron CS (or regular CS) and stick it to the inside of the card front – I tried using just a strip, but you could see the shadow of the edge through the white CS and it’s didn’t look very “polished”.
  5. Cut a 1″ x 4 1/4″ strip and a 1 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ strip of Washington Apple DP.  The two patterns you see actually come from the same sheet – one side is the Riding Hood Red pattern and the other side is the flower pattern.
  6. Stick the 1″ x 4 1/4″ strip about 1/4″ in from the left edge of the card, leave a 1/8″ gap and then stick the 1 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ piece of flowered DP.
  7. Stamp the Just for You greeting from the Oval All stamp set onto a scrap of Whisper White CS using Basic Black Classic ink. Punch it out using the large oval punch.
  8. Punch a scalloped oval out of a scrap of Riding Hood Red CS using the scalloped oval punch. Pierce a hole in the center of each scallop using a paper piercer and foam mat.
  9. Mount the oval to your card front using 2 Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  10. Take two small round clear buttons and using Crystal Effects and a foam brush, stick one button to a scrap of So Saffron DP (from the Washington Apple collection) and one to a scrap of the Riding Hood Red DP.
  11. Trim around the buttons using your paper snips.  Use your paper piercer and foam mat to poke a hole through the button holes.  Cut a thin sliver of whisper white CS and use as faux thread.
  12. Stick the buttons to your card front using mini glue dots.   You’re done!

I hope you enjoyed this card.  Don’t forget to enter my blog give-away in the post below if you haven’t already.

loving your new scrappy style! :)

I love this new style as well. I was going to suggest that maybe you should add some texture to the white part & then I read the directions & saw that you did add some so in person it may look even less empty… either way I like it. I love this DSP & I have never tried the clear buttons…

Very nice, I find it really hard to work with reds and oranges like that but it looks really nice.

16

So clean & simple but soooo effective Andrea. Love the layout, colours – everything!

17

Very pretty card!! I especially like the clear buttons with the pattened paper behind them. I’ve seen that before, but I like how you put them right on top of the patterned paper on the card.

18

I agree, stepping out of that comfort zone IS difficult, but that’s what makes your blog a very valuable resource. You inspire & challenge me to try new ideas, new techniques etc. and for that you deserve a very big THANK YOU !!!!

19

I don’t leave a lot of white space either, but this card is great and the white really makes the other colors pop!

20

I am still at the point of discovering my style and find myself prowling blogs for ideas. I love the beauty and the clean style that you and your sister seem to prefer. Many of my creations have come out of ideas from your site.

Yep, I’m with you! I don’t leave white space like that either! So hard! Not that I overdo it, but to me, it looks like I’ve forgotten something when I do something like that — your buttons totally finish it off as does the beautiful scalloped edge!! Jeannie

39

75

Great Card….I really like the button’s on the card very clean and simple. Thanks for sharing.

76

Your pep talk about trying new things is appreciated today. I was trying to make some very simple cards for a quick gift (on white which I usually do not work with) and just could not come up with something I liked. I was starting to get discouraged but will chalk it up to “learning” :)

77

For stepping out of your comfort zone you sure produced a fantastic card. I really like the clear buttons, they added the perfect touch.

78

I love the DSPaper that you used and the clear buttons….it’s a great card.

79

I just love the combinations you suggested for the new colors. When I first saw them I was stumped but thanks to you, I have the inspiration to get using them. Thanks for all you do – I love your work.

80

I love the card – especially the buttons!
