Valentine’s Bouquet

Posted on: Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Today I wanted to share with you a super simple but really fun-to-make Valentine’s bouquet. The last time I was at the dollar store (Dollarama here in Ontario – not sure if they have this chain elsewhere), I found the most adorable Valentine’s sugar cookies.  They came in a box of 5, beautifully decorated, and individually wrapped in cellophane. I immediately thought they would look fantastic as part of a Valentine’s bouquet, so of course, I had to buy them.  My vase, also came from that same dollar store.

I then headed over to our local craft store and bought some wooden dowels, white acrylic paint and glass beads.

ETA (Jan 29th): If your dollar store doesn’t have cookies like this then you could also use some of those pretty foil-wrapped chocolate hearts you can buy – there are all sorts of different kinds to choose from at the dollar store, bulk food store or grocery store.

You can download a pdf handout HERE.  The pdf includes a photo, supply list and step-by-step written directions.

You can watch the video on how I made the flowers below:

Here’s how I made my flowers:

  1. Take your wooden dowels and paint them white using a foam brush and white acrylic paint.  Set them aside to dry.
  2. Dry emboss five 4″ x 4″ pieces of Whisper White CS using the Perfect Polka Dot Textured Impressions folder and your big shot. Do the same for three 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ pieces of Real Red CS and two 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ pieces of Pretty in Pink CS.
  3. Dry emboss three 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ pieces of Real Red CS and two 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ pieces of Pretty in Pink CS using your Big Shot and the small polka dot textured impressions plate from the Stampin’ Up! Backgrounds I Collection.
  4. You will now need your Big Shot, extended cutting plates and the Stampin’ Up! Flower Folds Bigz XL die.  Die cut three Real Red and two Pretty in Pink flowers from the LARGEST of the flowers out of the textured 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ CS pieces.  Die cut three more Real Red and two more Pretty in Pink flowers from the LARGEST of the flowers out of non-textured 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ pieces of CS.
  5. Die cut three Pretty in Pink and two Real Red flowers from the flower that is the next size down using the textured 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ pieces of CS.
  6. Now die cut five Whisper White flowers from the second smallest flower, out of the 4″ x 4″ textured pieces of CS.
  7. Stick the cookie to the center of each of the Whisper White flowers using Sticky Strip.
  8. Stick two of the white flowers to a medium-sized flower (three Pretty in Pink and two Real Red) using Sticky Strip.
  9. Stick the medium flowers to the large texturized flowers (three Real Red and two Pretty in Pink) using Sticky Strip.
  10. Take one of the plain large Real Red flowers. Lay it on a piece of scrap paper, using a glue gun at the low setting, place a dollop of glue in the center of the flower.  Press the dowel into the glue and then place some more the glue on top.  Take one of the large Red Flowers with the cookie and sandwich it on top of the flower/glue/dowel.  Press them gently together and then set aside to dry.  Repeat for all the flowers.
  11. Tie a 16″ piece of Whisper White organza ribbon in a bow around each dowel.
  12. Place the clear glass beads into your vase and then arrange the flowers inside.  Shorten the dowels with a saw if necessary.  You’re done!

Hope you enjoyed today’s project!

This is so much fun! While I love real flowers, I think that this would put a huge smile on my face on valentines day! Or what about Mother’s day? This would be the perfect thing for me to make with my church Primary class. I teach a group of 3 year olds and I know they could help glue these together! Thanks for the wonderful inspiration!

Hello Andrea:

thanks so much for this idea. Not only did my daughter and I make these pretty much exact for her teachers and daycare providers, but i adapted the idea to make Valentine day cards. Instead of being on a stick, they were on the card front and have one less layer. I brought them to work for a Haiti fundraiser and they sold like hotcakes – i’m completely sold out having made close to $100 for the fundraiser (I was selling them for $5 / piece).
